The Swamp

By Rick Pearson

LOUISVILLE--During his bid for the presidency, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was known to be quick with a quip, using his background as a motivational speaker to make audiences laugh.

But a few hours after he appeared before the National Rifle Association's annual meeting yesterday, the Baptist minister and former Republican presidential contender was forced to apologize for an off-the-cuff comment that backfired.

Huckabee was among a number of prominent Republicans who used the NRA's "Celebration of American Values" at the Kentucky Exposition Center to argue that Democrats would take away gun-owner rights.

During his speech, a crashing sound was heard from off-stage.

"That was Barack Obama," Huckabee said. "He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he--he dove for the floor."

Even before a friendly audience, Huckabee's line fell flat and, later, he issued an apology. "I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama," Huckabee said. "I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention."

I hope the people BEHIND the ad the republican party ran about guns for the guns nuts and Hucklebee both will be THOROUGHLY investigated before somebody does something.
What a screwed up GOP it is.

Off the cuff my BUTT!
This was a clear attempt at intimidation and if the GOP doesn't pull the 'gun' ad AND Hucklebee off the trail, then the media should be asked why they're bothering giving any pixels or ink to these scoundrels and thugs.
Was Secret Service notified of these threats?
If not, they should be. This is NOT funny.

I think this presidential race is making me crazy. I've always liked Huckabee because I've watched him on the Colbert Report and I find him entertaining but I intensely dislike him now because of that remark. It just shows a side of him that I never figured and now I've realized I know nothing about him except for the few remarks he's made on a late night show. :(

He was just keeping it real. That's the REAL Mike Huckabee. A dirt-bag!!! Just think earlier this week they were talking about this guy being on the ticket with John McSAME. This is what the GOP has sunk to. Pathetic miscreants running for office.

I hope that Huckabee is an ex preacher.
The press may find him entertaining but I don't. He is a real jerk.

Well, another minister shouting violence. I guess he belong to a radical group from Arkansas, pushing hate toward American citizen. If this was Rev. Wright, he would have been arrested by the FBI, Secret Service would have investigated and searched his home and everybody associated with him. The same should be done to Rev. Huckabee, who knows what is in the mine of this evil person. "No Joke".We don't need anymore of the same as with Pres. reagan, JFK, and G. Ford, 9/11. Too many crazies out there, especially from Arkansas. Investigate Rev. Huckabee and his cronies. "NO JOKE"

From his retarded comments on evolution and his bringing the Bible to political debates to declare he believed it was the absolute word of God, I have long regarded Huckabee as merely a man missing at least one full lobe of his brain.

But this is different.

This shows a sadistic idea of humor and is definitely tinged with threat. He strikes me as a potentially dangerous man.

It is moreover, since is talking about a leading presidential candidate, a possibly criminal remark.

If you or I made this kind of comment in public about the president, the Secret Service would knocking on the door shortly after with all kinds of intrusive questions and opening a file, as they should.

Of course, previously we had another brain-dead member of America's Religious Right doing something similar.

Pat Robertson called for the assassination of a national leader. He should have been regarded as a terrorist under America's oppressive anti-terror laws, but he got away with it with no consequences.

America simply has the most bizarre national politics this side of Zimbabwe. Where else would a man of such low quality be considered as a potential presidential candidate by anyone other than his mother?

And, of course, this Appalachian Throwback is on McCain's list of possible VPs.

He wasn't thinking because, he can't !! The Wanna-Bees are at it again ! All we need now, is for Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain, to institute the extraction of your DNA, in return for your driver's license !! To Russia, with The Ridiculous Republicans !! How do like those apples, America !!!?

As someone who thinks Obama is another corrupt Cook COunty Hack who talks a good game but has never done anything, he is the worst kind of panderer there is, and he is everything that is wrong with politicians in my opinion, I still have to agree with the Obamabots. That was a very classless thing to say. It was just plain stupid and with John McCain there will be no place for that kind of garbage under a real President in John McCain. Huckabee needs to just shut up.

If he had any aspirations of becoming named as VP...he should forget them now.

Dear God,

If you exist, please come and pick up all the trash you left behind. The sooner the better. The stench coming from it is overwhelming.

Thanks in advance,
The Loyal Opposition

Oh, get over it. He made a joke. I wouldn't vote for Huck if he were the 2nd to last candidate, but these guys screw up sometimes. He apologized almost immediately. If you want to go after somebody, go after McCain's foreign policy whackiness. He's not apologizing or speaking off the cuff.
Also, here's a great quote from Huck that further illustrates that while I wouldn't want him as president, he's a really good guy:

i thought mccain would be the only one who will get 80 years old in the next 8 years.

Mr. Pearson,

It is hard for most civilized persons to understand, but some members of our species find the idea of one human shooting at another human -- or in this case, another's fear of being shot -- positively hillarious.

We need better mental health care in this country.

So the you-can't-have-too-many-guns-in-your-fanny-pack-in-universities lunatics are having a "Celebration of American Values" convention.
This is just a continuation of oxymorons the right has to offer.

Face it. The 2nd Ammendment is the most distorted & abused part of the Constitution. My right to life is greater then an individual's right to bear arms.
I'm all for eliminating that "right" to bear arms.

Plain and simple: A very, very stupid comment by Huckabee and an incredibly idiotic attempt at humor.

John, aren't you afraid of speaking that way in light of Canada's repressive speech laws?
He made no threats just a stupid joke.

This man is sick. What does he mean he apologizes if his comments were offensive? What he hell does he think, that his comments were warm and fuzzy? Gee, the mentality of bigotry goes way deep doesn't it? To the marrow. What a shame, as he stands on the same stage with that potato head guy, Karl Rove. They are doing the same thing they did before, trying to make Obama as unpatriotric, anti-American, out of touch with all Americans. They are liars and they will not get away with their crap this time. And what happened to Rove? He announced his retirement a long time ago. Isn't he tired of lying to get someone back into the white house like he lied for Bush, told him all he needed to do was thump the Bible all campaign season and that would do it with the Evangelical Christians, and so Bush obeyed, and there he is...now the murderer of thousands of Americans and Iraqis, the destroyer of a beautiful country, the divider of the world, the most-hated president ever. So this is Karl Rove's specialty -- dishing up the bad, the worse and the worstest!!! So Huck and the rest of these 'birds of a feather' all stick together!!

I'd buy the "stupid joke" and "he apologized" argument IF the "stupid joke" hadn't been about assassination of a public figure.

This needs to be treated the same as if one of us had "joked" about assassinating Bush or Cheney, or if we'd "yukked it up" about carrying a bomb on board a plane.

Given the political division in this country and the lengths to which Republicans have gone in the past to keep their hold on the government, potential assassination of a Democratic president / president-elect / presidential candidate is not that far-fetched. It's serious stuff. Shame on you if you think it isn't!

Has Huckabee given up his sheet, rope and accelerant for a gun ? That was a real funny !! I can only imagine what the Ridiculous Republicans would have done to the Reverand Wright had he made funny !!! Huckabee, get thee to the Ridiculous Republican's V. P. slot, you just mouthed their new slogan, forget the antidepressant !!!

Huckabee, your unfortunate utterance yesterday can cause 'distress' to peoples health. Such as, stroke, seizure, shock, heart-attack etc.......so you better be careful and watch what you say.

This is the same man that appointed a Doctor to head the Arkansas State Health Department that believed that women "Cannot get pregnant when being raped".

Come kind of spiritual shield was supposed to protect them. The rest of that thought is anyone woman that CLAMS to have been raped and gets pregnant must have consented.

If I were to rate the "Huck's" joke about B.H.O. I would have to give it a rating of "S.F." for Seriously Funny. It works because it play off of B.H.O.'s well know hoplophobia, an unreasoning and irrational fear of weapons. The real story is the back channel talk among B.H.O.'s aides that he is facing a potential "cohone-gate" scandal of his own. As any student of American history knows it takes huge cohones to be President of the United States. Nobody questions John McCain's cohones, and as Democratic strategist James Carville has noted, if H.R.C. were to give B.H.O. one of her cohones he'd have two. In 1988 Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis was ahead of George H.W. Bush by double digits in the polls until it was discovered that he had no cohones. Needless to say he was clobbered in the election. What B.H.O.'s operatives are whispering about is that if the general public ever discovers that their man has no cohones they'll lose the election in Nov.

I can't believe you guys are taking this so seriously. He made one stupid comment. Forgive him.

Man Huck needs to be cut some slack,he meant it as a joke not that it harmed anyone. So maybe his sense of humor had left a while but so what he always made us laugh before and for that we loved him.
