Our friends at Top of the Ticket start the first of a series of conversations with political experts today by chatting with author Matt Welch. The former Los Angeles Times writer wrote "McCain: The Myth of a Maverick." ![]()
Welch talks about how he got the story, despite facing an uncooperative McCain staff that said, "Off the record we'd be crazy to cooperate with you in any way so we're not going to," after seeing Welch's previous McCain coverage in the newspaper.
"Its actually part of McCain's underappreciated media strategy," Welch says. "He's very open to people, you can come on the bus, everything's great. But if he knows or his team knows that you have a hostile line of questioning or you just have a long and well-documented critique, they're not going to talk to you."
Check out the story and video of the interview with Welch at Top of the Ticket, the L.A. Times' political blog.
