Since the beginning of the Republic, American presidential campaigns have spawned their own soundtracks in the form of campaign songs meant to trumpet the virtues of the next president of the U.S., or someone who thought he would be but wasn't. So it didn't start with Obama Girl.
The advent of YouTube among other developments has probably led to more presidential campaign song-writing than ever before. So we thought what better way to tap into all that creativity than to hold a web-based competition open to all comers, something like a cross between American Idol and really bad karaoke.
With that in mind, we're partnering with our friends at MediaCurves.com to bring to you a contest for the best or funniest original campaign songs or parodies. The songs can lionize the remaining presidential candidates or the political parties. Or they can lampoon them. Your choice.
The contest officially starts June 15, 2008 when entrants will be able to submit videos of themselves or others performing their campaign ditties.
Until then, you can register for the contest either by clicking on the banner above or here for the MediaCurves.com site. There, you'll get a little more information and some sample videos to get your creative juices flowing. In the next few weeks before the contest starts, we'll announce the rules.
So get to your keyboard or pick up that guitar and start composing what could be the next "I Like Ike" or, yes, "I've Got a Crush on Obama."

See the fire
see the flame see the feds take down my name 'cause my draftcard I'm burning today.
Though I know it's a crime I'll be written up in Time,
'cause my draftcard
I'm burning today.
For it's a hoo-hoo haw when the judge lays down the law,
I'll make Toronto come what may,
Though it seems absurd that I'm permanently deferred
'Cause my draftcard
I'm burning today.

"Could you coo? /
Could you care /
For a cunning cottage we could share? /
The world will pardon my mush /
cause Ive got a crush, / my baby, / on you"
NOOOOOOOOOOO, FJ.
An Xquisitely Xcellent George and Ira Gershwing song. The GREAT Gershwins at their finest. With all due respect, It would truly be SACRILEDGE to defile this great jazz classic in a manner such as this. I keep this one in the vaults only for a special Pretty Latina in my dreams.
I do have a song, more appropriate for the occassion. A melody voice-leading guitar kind of thing with No lyrics, but full of minor 2nds, minor 6ths, minor 9ths, broken 6/9th chords, and the like. It perfectly sets the appropriate mood of gloom, but I am not out to spoil every one else's joy. That's just the kind of sensitive guy I am.
