The Swamp

by Katie Fretland and updated

A Fox News anchor faced backlash recently for characterizing Barack and Michelle Obama's fist bump as possibly a "terrorist fist jab." Now during a segment the network has displayed a screen referring to the wife of the presumptive democratic nominee as his "baby mama."

The screen was displayed beneath a segment in which anchor Megyn Kelly interviewed Michelle Malkin, a conservative blogger. The segment discussed a conservative group's planned anti-Obama documentary.

"Outraged liberals: Stop picking on Obama's baby mama!" the screen read.

Today, Malkin writes:

"I did not write the caption and I was not aware of it when it ran (the Baltimore studio doesn't have a monitor). I don't know if the caption writer was making a lame attempt to be hip, clueless about the original etymology of the phrase, or both."

Fox News issued this statement today from Bill Shine, senior vicepresident of programming for Fox News Channel.

"A producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using this chyron
during the segment."

The right.......The lowest form of "great" Americans. What scum.

Leave Michelle alone. She's not running for anything.

She's charming with a sincere smile, and she is a loving spouse - you can just see that when they are together - and a highly educated woman.

By the way, all women considering a vote for McCain - especially Hillary supporters - should read the story of McCain's first wife. It ain't pretty.

Here it is:

Megyn Kelly the anchor interviews her other personality, Megyn Kelly the conservative blogger...interesting...

I really hope that the terrorist jab was a very poorly articulated joke.

If not then we know the road that they going to go for during this election season.

this is just plain discusting and sophmoric at best. Can the republican right ever stick to their family values agenda with such blatanly racist and disturbing comments? i think not.

Michelle Malkin responded to this on her blog:
http://michellemalkin.com/2008/06/11/were-going-to-hell/

Michelle Obama has used the term fondly. The term originated in hip hop and R&B lyrics. Her pastor cites rap lingo in his sermons. That settles it for me.

What a bunch of racist slop. There are days I am ashamed to call myself a conservative (not all of us take pride and pleasure in acting like a bunch of petty, poorly socialized mouth breathers). And what is up with not being able to admit when you've made an arse out of yourself? Michelle Malkin's "defense" of this crap is disingenuous at best. I sometimes jokingly call my husband an ass. Would it be OK if that was what his company put on his business cards? If he appeared on the news to discuss his business, would it really be OK to put "Keith T, ass" on the screen to identify him? I am appalled at Obama's policies, but if this is how the right is going to conduct themselves, they deserve to be voted out of office for the next 100 years. Just disgusting.

WOW Rebeccat, I am impressed and proud with your response! Even though you and I dont see eye to eye on the issues, obviously since I am a liberal and you a conservative, at least it is clear that their are conservatives who actually have a conscience. Bravo!

Yes, the tagline is pretty stupid and absurd. But what I would like to know is that I've seen just as stupid and absurd taglines on MSNBC and CNN, yet. somehow, those don't find their way into the Swamp. Why is that? (rhetorical question)

If Barack or Michelle had been caucasian, media commentary would not be as it is now. Whether Michelle used the terms "baby's mama" or "baby's daddy", it seems to be personal linguistics between Michelle and Barack which should not be used by anyone else. End of story.

Green Trees: want to give some examples?

Not this time. Not again!

The American public is sick and tired of the divisive politics as practiced by Republicans and their surrogates. Obama will win by taking the high road.

Green Trees,
Love your MO. Yesterday you commented that a story was cluttered with inaccuracies and failed to cite even one of them. Care to cite any of the tag lines you claim appeared on the other networks? Didn't think so.

This is going to backfire. More people will sympathize with the Obamas. The will also start digging into McCain's womanizing and Cindy's drug abuse.

This is kind of like Republican attack ads. Fox News says something racist or false, and the mainstream media repeats it over and over and over and over until it gets drilled into everyone's head as the truth. How many think Iraq was involved with 9/11? It's like they do the Republican attack ads. How many thought John Kerry shot himself in Vietnam? Fox and the Republicans are only able to spread ignorance with the help of the corporate media. Both are un-American.

I'm still waiting for the day when Americans will use their brains and not their emotions to determine what is best for the country. This campaign brings me back to my Jr. High school days when the "cool" girls would spread gossip to (hopefully) cement their spots on the top of the heap.
What do the candidates stand for? Are their campaign promises and hopes achievable? I think everyone (and I mean both sides, since no one is innocent here) should stand back and wipe the mud off the candidates and take a good hard look at what these two men have to offer and stop whining about what shortcomings may exist. No wonder America is in a downward spiral. Instead of supporting the leaders we have (or may have) we poke and whine about what the other guy did (or didn't do) when our energies could be spent making our nation strong and competitive. Don't blame Bill Clinton, and don't blame George W Bush. Neither man single-handedly created any policies, bungled any disasters, or destroyed the economy. Hundreds and thousands of actions of ordinary citizens, our elected representatives, and even other nations combined to lead us to where we are today. Neither candidate can single-handedly carry our nation in any direction without the same group efforts. Our nation actually united for a short time after 9-11. Why does a terrorist group have to wreak havoc on our country for us to put aside our petty differences and work together?

I personally saw Chris Matthews, MSNBC, ask Michelle Malkin to retract a story that he said was untrue. She refused. He told her that she would never be allowed on his show again.

The fact that she didn't know is complete hogwash. I worked for a news organization and the reporter not only knows what captions run on their graphics, they often recommend them (or pass them off on the interns to think of one).

Fox News being Fox News.

We distort.
You decide.

All the cloaked hate talk is starting to turn me away from FOX. I just turn off the TV and have a peaceful night.

Hannity has gotten so bad that he's starting to sound like a cheap talk radio host. Tell the guy to stop beating dead horses! All we hear when he open his mouth is demeaning talk and personal attacks. His Rev. Wright crying jag is a good example of repeative programming. It's getting as bad as when Gretta Van Sustran only had shows about that missing Aruba girl.

It would be great if Americans could focus on the real issues like the economy that sucks right now and soliders who are ready to come home from Iraq! If people want to sit and talk about thes issues 4 mores years than be my guest and vote for McBush!

This link will provide several days worth of stuff from the mainstream media. Of course, the Left will discount it because it's from a conservative media watchdog group. But if the Tribune can refer to liberal group Media Matters for its attacks on Fox News, then MRC will do just fine:

Thanks, Green Trees. Don't expect the biased on this board to pay any attention though. They won't think there is anything wrong with the things being cited.

Why should anyone be surprised by the wingnuts. They believe in doom, gloom, fear and smear. They are unaware that most Americans reject this type of thinking and that it hurts rather than helps thier cause

Fox shouldn't be surprised at what they get from Malkin. This is the same woman who argued that WWII internment of Japanese Americans was a good idea...65 years after the Japanese Americans of the 442nd RCT won 9486 purple hearts, 560 silver stars, and 21 medals of honor in combat for Uncle Sam. She's a nut, but what do you expect from Fox?

Green Trees, I followed the link. I'm a moderate/independent (fiscal conservative, social liberal) and I see very little there to get upset about, other than Chris Matthews, who I think we all recognize his time has passed. Sure there's some partisanship, but it's fairly transparent and mostly comes from analysts and commentators, not anchors or journalists. Nowhere do I see anything approaching the racism of the "baby mama" quote, or the disengenuity of tactics like "terrorist fist jab."

My favorite part of the clip is where Malkin is stating that so far the attacks on Michelle Obama have been regarding the substance of her public statements, not cheap shots or personal jobs, while the caption below her actually reads "Malkin calls Michelle Obama "Obama's Bitter Half."
Priceless.

Waah! Waaah! Liberals do mean stuff too. So I'm totally justified in repeating BS about them.

Fox exercised poor judgement? They and the neo-cons are like two peas in a pod. They put the thought out there, then they apologize, but the damage is done, they did what they intended so the apology means nothing. whiteagle38

he comment made on Fox illustrates how cloaked racist try to attack the Obamas under disguise of being amusing and "hip". I expect the attacks to be stepped up from media like Fox, MSNBC and others as the presidential campaign develops. Media like FOX cannot resist using despicable, disgusting low life language to stereotype and attack the Obamas . It is clearly your way of asserting continued control by white dominated media and their chauvinist attitudes. As a voter, I don't buy this attack/apology strategy as a way of swaying my vote for or against Obama. Your problem as a media leader is, once you spew this racist crap, it is out there for others to use as "ok" material for further attacks. For example, one ignorant fool hangs a rope in a tree as a racist gesture, and of sudden, ropes are popping up all over the country!
