Former Democratic presidential nomination rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton met privately this evening in Washington, Obama's campaign confirmed.

The Illinois senator had been scheduled to fly back to Chicago this evening, but he unexpectedly stayed behind for the meeting.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

The session at an undisclosed location was arranged by staff members for the senators, after Obama on Sunday and again on Tuesday expressed a desire to meet face to face to talk about bringing their campaigns and party together.

The New York senator is planning to formally endorse Obama on Saturday at a farewell rally with her supporters in Washington. Obama is scheduled to spend the weekend in Chicago with no public events.

Obama "BITTER" have his check book. Hillary Soprano needs cash to payoff her debts. Bill has called in the IOU's.

It would be a great thing that they go together as president and vice-president. This may bring the best of both worlds and will be the first time a man and a woman go together in the same ticket. This is more meaningful than the fact that the man is black which is irrelevant in my opinion

I smell a sell out by BO and HC.......

He smells sell out...I smell unity. Or I smell a wingnut who wants to continue to stir the pot. The weak minded supporters of each candidate can be whipped into a frenzy very easily.

No way will she be his running mate. But I'll bet they do some kind of debt-for-funds swap. She's $20 million in debt on the primary and has more than that for the general that she can't now spend to retire the primary debt. He could use the general election money but as for the primary, he can pay her off with what's in his change drawer.

This is exactly what all candidates do once a nominee is named. For those of you who constantly badger and undermine HRC and Obama for thier negative spats towards each other during the campaign must understand this is how the process is. Candidates badger each other throughout the process and then turn around and name their opponant as their VP. Regan and Bush, Clinton and Gore, Kennedy and Johnson, etc they all appeared to hate each other during their campaign trails. The party is almost split 50/50, what better than to join these two forces to make one great team that would bring the party together! The bottom line is HRC and Obama have mainly the same ideals. Throughout history the VP has remained in the shadows (until Cheney of course)
If Obama and HRC join together, their force will be unbeatable! Whats better than a President and VP who actually work together for the same causes? This ticket will be the strongest in American history! Regardless of most of you who hate Obama or hate HRC, its time to grow up and realize the potential of these two forces joining together. Vote responsibly not emotionally!
Obama/Clinton 2008!!

I'm with Ramon. I hope he picks Hill as his running mate. It would be a great way to bring the party together, but also, a huge blessing for this country once they get into office.

I liked the first comment.

It would be the worst thing the democratic party could do to put Hillary on the ticket. It would mean that they don't have enough faith in B.O. to be president and want to pander to the Hillary supporters.

Neither candidate have enough experience to handle an effective foreign policy.

For those who attack McCain for backing the surge and understanding the consequences of pulling out early, don't grasp the complexities of the situation. The position of both HC and BO don't handle the issue and will leave the door open to more trouble down the road.

Hillary and Co. have given enough ammunition to the Republicans to attack Obama. She will be appearing on a lot of Republican campaing ads!.

With or without Clinton, it all boils down to one simple question: In Obama, will Americans elect a president whose entire career has been promoting hard-left grievance politics in partnership with unrepentant terrorists, America-haters, racists and felons?

Ramon Leonato said "...and will be the first time a man and a woman go together in the same ticket."

Were you not alive when Geraldine Ferraro was the vice-presidential candidate in 1984?

Just say no!

He is doing the right thing because he is such a great guy and the perfect candidate. Hillary is going to look back on all this and see that she was simply beaten by a once-in-a-lifetime candidate. There might be 5 people that could have beaten her. It happens....ask the New England Patriots!

I don't know who advised her to diss the man on Tuesday, but whoever it is needs to be fired. Both Barack and Hillary OWE the Democratic Party because the Republicans show nuff aint running either of them. He is a wise to reach out to her, and she would be wise to accept his kind gesture and unite the party. I am a skeptic and do not think that she is going to be able to persuade one voter to support him. Especially on a Friday or Saturday "OK". But he is doing to the right thing by asking. Obama, stay on the High road. And win or lose, let it be because of the RIGHT reasons, not because you had to lie, cheat or beg. But because AMERICANS of all colors and backgrounds believed in you and your message!

An Obama-Clinton ticket is just what McCain needs to win.

Hopefully he just gave them (Clintons) money to go away. That's all they want anyhow. Probably not the $100 MILLION Bill got for influencing foreign mining rights, but maybe $5-10M would send them packing.

I think everyone is missing the most important point: Will Obama/Clinton tandem be good for the USA and the rest of the world?

Super Ticket! Watch out McCain

Ramon..
Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro. Google it.

Barack Obama will patch things up with Hillary and her supporters and will win in November in a landslide.

I think he'll end up taking Bill Richardson as his VP. They'll be a young, dynamic pair. Bill brings much needed help with latinos, foreign and energy policy cred, and enhances his mantra of "change".

Hillary wants to be asked for VP , but will turn it down as planned in the backroom meetings. No other women will be asked to take the VP job either. That, at Hillarys request after being the stalwart for women across America.

Hahahahhaaaaa! You're funny!

Hillary doesn't get to be VP - that's a given. Barrack probably offered to "buy" her out by having her campaign debts paid. She, in turn, has to agree to ENTHUSIASTCALLY support the Obama campaign, including telling her supporters to do so. Since Obama is now the new head of the Democratic Party, he also has the power to make a threat: backtrack on any of this and the Party will do everything necessary to defeat you in any election you run in. How sweet it is that Hillary no longer holds the high cards but is forced into the role of a supplicant. Humility will look very becoming on her.
