McCain, Obama, commanders-in-chief: The Swamp

In the daily Gallup track, McCain and Obama also have come up dead-even.

Gallup commander in chief survey

The Swamp

Sen. John McCain, a retired Naval aviator, Naval Academy graduate and son and grandson of admirals, draws a high level of confidence among voters in his ability to serve as commander-in-chief - with 80 percent of those surveyed saying McCain can handle the job.

Sen. Barack Obama, who never has served in the military but is a graduate of Harvard Law, barely passes the 50-percent mark on this question - with 55 percent of those surveyed telling the Gallup Poll that Obama can handle the job.

And, at a time when other polls are starting to portray growing advantages for Democrat Obama in his contest with Republican McCain for the White House, the Gallup Poll's daily tracking survey has returned to a dead-even matchup between the two: Obama 45 percent, McCain 45 percent.

The results of the newest Gallup track come from surveys conducted June 22-24 - fresher than the surveys conducted by either the L.A. Times or Newsweek that showed 12-point and 15-point advantages, respectively, for Obama. The Gallup Poll of 2,600 registered voters carries a possible 2 percent margin of error.

But on a deeper question of public trust in the competence of the candidates to perform one of the paramount duties of the office, Gallup has found a wide divide in the way voters view McCain and Obama. This may well play into the themes that McCain, in particular, brings to the campaign this summer.

"McCain clearly enjoys a more broad-based positive reputation with Americans for military matters than does Obama, but it is unclear how this will benefit him in the election,'' Gallup's Lydia Saad writes. "McCain gets significantly more crossover acclaim from Democrats for being able to fulfill the duties of commander in chief than Obama does from Republicans, but this is unlikely to win him many crossover votes.''

Read more here, and see the Gallup Poll.

The view on this question, as on so many others, is skewed along party lines:

McCain is viewed as ready for the commander-in-chief's role by 94 percent of the Republicans, 79 percent of the independents and 71 percent of the Democrats surveyed. Obama is viewed as ready to report for duty by 77 percent of the Democrats , 59 percent of the independents and just 26 percent of the Republicans surveyed.

This comes from Gallup surveys run June 15-19.

The survey also found that McCain leads Obama by 53 to 40 percent "as the candidate more Americans say they would trust if a situation arose that required the president to make a decision about sending U.S. troops into combat.''

In the potential theater of Iran, in particular, Obama and McCain are nearly tied in public-trust ratings. Gallup reports: McCain's five percentage-point lead on this measure, 48 to 43 percent, is not statistically significant.

"Nearly as many Republicans and Democrats choose McCain for sending troops into Iran as do so for the general sending troops into combat measure, but he has less support from independents. Whereas 54 percent of independents choose McCain as the candidate they trust more to make decisions about sending troops into combat generally, only 44 percent trust him more relative to sending troops to Iran.

While independents express greater confidence in McCain than in Obama as a commander in chief, Gallup's Saad notes, " still more than half do have confidence in Obama.... And although more independents choose McCain as the candidate they trust to send U.S. troops into combat, generally, they are divided between McCain and Obama when it comes to sending troops into Iran.

"In short, while defense issues are potentially one of McCain's strong suits, the more the issue is framed in terms of sending U.S. troops into combat, and particularly into Iran, the less helpful it may be to his candidacy.''

We all have pride in the women and men who serve in the military. Nothing stirs the heart more than to see them marching proudly in formations. Excellence is the one thing that the military strives to do and should do, because in defense the job has to be done right the first time. However to assume that everyone who has ever served in the military has a monopoly on excellence leaves a lot to the imagination. Such is the case with John McCain. Why do so many people assume that because he served in the military that he will have the requisite judgment, temperament, intelligence, and vision to serve this country as Commander in Chief? Sure he knows how to salute, knows the Code of Conduct, and can probably march in formation, but it is for sure that there are bound to be incidents in his military record that would call into question his overall ability. McCain left the Navy more than thirty years ago and did not have an especially distinguished career, other than having been shot down and having been a POW. Even his legislative record is not that remarkable when it comes to military affairs. Once he releases his full Navy record we can all be better judges of just what in his past makes him the most acceptable candidate to head the military.

What's will all this bull about McCain being a "military expert?
As usual, if the corporate media would actually do it's job and quit taking everything their "maverick" hero (McCain) says at face value and pulled back the curtain they would find that McCain is as weak on military affairs as he is on everything else.

McCain graduated 894th out 899 in his Navy class and he crashed and burned five planes which earned him the nickname "reverse ace". If McCain had been anything other than a son and grandson of Admirals he would have been flying a desk in Nam and not a plane.

And exactly what foreign policy experience does McCain have? You only get actual foreign policy experience by being the President, Vice-President or serving in a Cabinet position and McCain has done none of these. The only thing close to foreign policy experience that McCain has was his vote of YES to pre-emptively invade Iraq and he blew it big time on that one.

As a former member of the military and the son of a Vietnam veteran I have the upmost regard for all service personnel.

But that's not the point.

You don't have to know how to fly combat sorties to have an opinion as to whether they should be flown.

Politics, foreign relations, and their implications can, do, and should supercede the opinion of the person operating flight controls.

Dear American Voters, reporters, media. professionals, political parties, and presidential Nominees,

Please plead and request the media, pundits, and politician's to "Compare And Contrast" " Presidential Temperament" of our Presidential presumptive nominees? as we do for the appointments for the Supreme Court Justices of Our Greatgrand Nation.

Our Greatgrand Nation Foundations are as under:
Family, friends, fellows, faith, funds, fun, with fairness & freedom And without fear, favor, and failure.

Yours truly,

COL. [retd] A.M.Khajawall
Disabled American Veteran
Forensic psychiatrist, Las Vegas

PS: Please talk about the " Presidential Temperament, Composer, Consistency And Caliber " is the key for our presumptive presidential Nominees. We do talk about the "Judicial Temperament" of our Supreme Court Justices nominees and so far we have failed to talk about the " Presidential Temperament " of our presumptive presidential nominees. The " Presidential Temperament " is the ultimate and in my opinion only requirement of our president as that effects every living soul here and around the world.

Thanks once again.

McCain is unfit to be President. He not only represents four more years of Bush's failed policies, he might even be worse:

Barack Obama is very charming, reads a speech better than anybody else in politics and wears nice suits so he appeals to a lot of people on a visceral level. However, when you pose the question: should he be the Commander in Chief of the World's largest Military, of the last remaining superpower, in an increasingly dangerous world the voters understandably balk. Suddenly the bumper sticker slogans become less important and they see the man spouting them as vacuous and unqualified.
This is a more significant poll than the LA Times blip. This question will still matter in November.

Dead even.

John Kerry was ahead by 6% in the Gallup Poll of 4 years ago, July, 2004.

Based on the comments here in comparison to the results of the poll, I'd say you posters are in denial.

RNC Bruce,

Objection, relevance.

Gallup today shows Obama and McCain tied. If the holy messiah can't hold a lead this early against a party whose encumbents' approval ratings are at historical lows, what does that say about what Americans think of Democrats?

Obama has outspent McCain 25-1 and they are tied. He lost all credibilty when he choses not to take the public funding. He has lost the change mantra after doing that. I think that will be his biggest mistake of this election. He is now seen as just another politcian by all people. Even those who love him have expressed disappointment and state that he has lost the advantage that he had on change.

Vinny, please explain, if Obama lost all credibility when he refused public funding, how McCain retains any credibility after refusing public funding in the primaries, after he had already requested public funding?

Michael Jackson,

You mean bumper sticker slogans like bomb bomb Iran or 100 years in Iraq?

Not only does McCain come across as angry, he' also a stuffed suit who gives nearly incoherent speechs and what he does say borders on insanity.

I love it when the Wingnuts finally find a poll that gets their hopes up. It's things like this that are going to make Obama's victory this fall all the more sweet.

This is obvious. One is a decorated veteran who knows how to lead and the other is a dedicated flip-flopper who knows how to ... litigate. Not the most awe-inspiring backgroud.

I agree with Jeff, McCain is a decorated flip-flopper:

Military service apparently is not important to voters: Bob Dole; John Kerry; even George H.W. Bush's re-election bid lost to Clinton.

McCain is not a war hero. A hero is someone who risks his live to save someone else--not themselves.

McCain is just a survivor.

John McCain destroyed 5 Navy aircraft. If he was not the son a four-star Admiral, he would have been
grounded or kicked out of the Navy.

Here's a polling question I'd like to see: Do you want the to give the most important executive job in the nation (arguably, the world) to a creature of the Chicago Machine?
Chicago is internationaly infamous as a model of bad government; of cronyism; of graft; of waste; inefficiency; incompetence; oppressive taxation. Most of Obama's political life was as spent as an integral part of that machine.
Is that the sewer from which you want to choose a leader, America? Do you really want the nation run like Chicago?

Intelligence trumps experience, therefore Obama has the upper hand. McCain wouldn't even be in politics if his wife didn't finance his first running for office with almost 200,000 dollars. McCain doen't have the intelligence to run his own family, let alone a country. We don't need a president with a short fuse in the White House. McNut is not qualified! whiteagle38

Kirk Muse - so insisting that other POWs be released ahead of you isn't risking your life to save someone else? He is a war hero by your own definition. Even the most jaded have to respect the man's sacrifice. Especially if their scale has Obama at the level of savior.

Face it, people. If Obama joined the army, he would not be qualified to be a corporal, let alone (choke) commander in chief. Of course, no fear in that. Obama's definition of public service given in his recent college address included everything except the military.

MJ,
The USA has the worlds largest military?? Seriously, where do you get your "facts"?

Make no mistake about it Barack Hussein Obama comes across as very angry. He is an elitist law instructor who does not have enough gravitas to be Commander-in-Chief.
Obama has smarmy associations, a paper thin resume and he is a Daley corrupt machine politican who did Tony Rezko and many others bidding for some 17 years.
This man has said that people who don't like him are bitter clinging to their guns and God.
It is Obama who is bitter and mean as he prances the stage holding an ever present microphone.
He looks out at the crowd as though he were preaching down to his audience while talking and reusing "that a"
In Obamas own words From Dreams of My Father:I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race."From Dreams of My Father:"I ceased to advertise my mothers race at the age of 12 or 13 when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites"'
From Obamas Audacity of Hope: "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an angry direction"
Wake up folks this guy has too many chips on his shoulder to be President of the United States of America! Jerry White, Springfield, IL
