The Swamp

by Katie Fretland

As the Democratic primaries draw to a close tonight and Sen. Barack Obama appears poised to clinch the nomination, Sen. John McCain is preparing for the general election with a message of change.

Tonight, McCain will speak in Kenner, La., a suburb of New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The location symbolizes the failure of the Bush administration following the disaster.

"The message is change. It's real change," McCain told reporters in Nashville, Tenn. "I think it's clear I have a record of working across the aisle. Senator Obama does not. I think it's my record of reform and efforts to change the way we do business in Washington. He has the most liberal voting record of any senator in the U.S. Senate."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The only thing that changes is McCain's position. Oppose the Bush tax cuts, then support them. Damn Karl Rove, then bring him on as an adviser. Condemn the Religious Right, then seek their support. He's as big a phony as they come.

When did Republicans cling onto the Change theme? Oh yeah after Mittens handily defeated McCain in the MI primary. Until then they mocked Change. LOL. Love the oppurtunistic hypocrite big old white male Elephant party

McSame is engaging in a bald faced lie. Barack Obama went to Russia with Republican United States Senator Richard Lugar who praised Obama in that regard.

No more of your lies will go unchallenged again.

Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain must mean pocket "Change ". That is the only change he understands, ask Charles Keating. Come on, Senator, tell us about your fling with Mr. Keating and all that pocket change he gave you, in the form of political contributions and vacations for you and your family. Please, tell us it will not happen, again!! Please, Senator " Making Change " McCain leave the change, money, that is, alone !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Obviously, J Mc (McCain's hip-hop name) isn't as deaf as people thought. He saw the "handwriting" on the wall and started listening to what America was saying. The problem is that most of us are smart enough to know that he's seemingly inspired by Obama's leadership. Are we looking at the "flip-flopper" of the 2008 elections? (Next to Hillary, that is.)

Go McCain, no matter what political rhetoric from the loony left, we are solidly behind you. We don't always agree with you, but we certainly don't agree with the liberal left candidates we find in Hillary and Barack. It's time we had some common sense in the White House. No matter how they try to tie you to President Bush, anyone who has watched your career for 20 years knows that you are your own man. Character Counts and so does your record in the Senate. Please, you liberals, show us Baracks records of accomplishment, besides the fact he surrounds himself with people of extremely bad character. Just what we need in the White House!!!!

McCain is correct on Obama...limited if any record of working across the aisle, especially compared to McCain. Obama falls in line with his party, while McCain has bucked his party many, many times.

McCain is as bad as Washington politics gets. Why do you think he never disclosed his wife's tax information? HE'S HIDING HIS BRIBES IN HER ACCOUNTS! He's not going to be changing anything; his lobbyist advisors won't let him, nor will the backers that Bush has been pulling in to McSame's closed-doors fundraisers. Sadly, if enough of Clinton's supporters truly are dumb enough to not vote for Obama in November, the Ohio and Florida elections will become that much easier to rig. Rove and his ignorant band of Neocons are great at disenfranchising voters and turning Democratic wins into Republican controversies. We don't need Clinton backers making it easier for them! I once backed Clinton, but her supporters really need to understand the implications of a McCain presidency. Time to put our petty differences behind us and rally behind the party that has ALWAYS been trying to change the government for the better. WE are PROGRESSIVE, THEY are CONSERVATIVE, despite the BS that Republicans concoct to convince people otherwise.

McAin't Bush is more of the same phony plastic shrubbery for our White House lawn. He is capable of the same kind of scary self-deception that W is, when the opportunity to take an advantage arises. When will these Republicans understand that the truth is important to voters?

This is weak.

"real change"

Take a look at Obama and McCain: McCain is supposed to be the "real change" in Washington?

He's practically part of the furniture, literally has half of K Street running his campaign, and we certainly can't forget that he plans to continue all Bush's disastrous policies of the last 8 years.

It's pretty easy to see who the "real change" would be.

Be show me where McSame differs with Bush or the same old tired GOP party line. It's the same garbage wrapped in an old package. It's sad. If he's so, great and their Right's platform is so solid run on it, don't run away or try to spin. Say it load and say it proud. "Hate, Fear and Greed Four More Years -Hate, Fear and Greed Four More Years" Come on said it with me! "Hate, Fear and Greed Four More Years"

jontx said: "Obama falls in line with his party, while McCain has bucked his party many, many times. "

McCain used to buck his party, but what has he done lately? Unfortunately for him (and the Republican party in general), he has to toe the line set out by the religious right - which means he's been voting for the war, against abortion, against tax relief for middle-class people, against education reform, against tax reform, etc. etc.

McCain needs the support of the Republican party faithful, which means he's going to have to suck up to the religious fanatics who have taken over our party.Goodbye to the maverick. Too bad. Might almost vote Dem!

What a difference between the mature, experienced McCain and his apparent opponent. One has served his country with distinction. The other has served only his self-interests and accomplished nothing of note in 45 plus years. The shortest book in the world? "The Experience and Achievements of Barrack Odumber."

Jonh McCain represents change about as much as Bill Clinton represents marital fidelity. Who cares if McCain was a captive 40 years ago? Some people think that earns him the keys to the Oval Office. I don't. In fact, a compelling argument can be made that that is a good reason not to vote for him. McCain is too old, too senile, too mean and too unstable to be president. Period!

Yes...the blowing in the wind ex-maverick is showing again more signs of his Bush like tactics.....use a little symbolism like NO. Funny...up till the last couple of months, I never heard a peep out of McBush about NO. I heard him call the evangalists "agents of intolerance" then actively seek their votes. I heard him put a stop to the torture bill, but I guess it was to check on the spelling of waterboarding cause he voted for it anyway. I heard him vote no to MLK day. Basically I've heard him vote both sides of just about every issue there is. Except for Iraq...he's been wrong on that from the begining.

John McCain's Miserable Record on Hurricane Katrina:

"John McCain's Time for Action tour arrived in New Orleans Thursday, where McCain toured the hurricane-damaged 9th Ward and criticized both the Bush Administration and Congress for its handling of the disaster. Lamenting the pace of recovery, McCain said, "I want to assure you it will never happen again in this country. You have my commitment and my promise."

"But McCain's record on Hurricane Katrina suggests that he was part of the problem, not the solution. McCain was on Face the Nation on August 28, 2005, as Katrina gathered in the Gulf Coast. He said nothing about it. One day later, when Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, McCain was on a tarmac at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, greeting President Bush with a cake in celebration of McCain's 69th birthday. Three days later, with the levees already breached and New Orleans filling with water, McCain's office released a three-sentence statement urging Americans to support the victims of the hurricane."

Change?

The only "change" we'll get with McCain will be coming from the mouths of unemployed citizens panhandling for money. (And, he can change his diapers, of course).

It's entertaining that the Obama Pom Squad is still trying to paint McCain with the Bush brush. On the contrary, the problem many Republicans have with McCain is that he is not, and has never been a lock-step Republican. Obama, on the other hand, has never demonstrated any independence, desire or ability to reach out and build consensus or unite anything. He's lock-step with the hard left -- always has been, always will be. Obama is a hardcore Daley Machine guy not anything close to the merry candy man of unity he pretends to be. He will be defeated.

Well, let’s see. By his own admission, Obama spent his youth doing drugs and making fun of minorities. He hated his grandma and, in his words, held “a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.” Then he joined up with Jeremiah. McCain served his country and nearly died for it. He loved and respected his family and has lived a well-respected life. Yes, the choice is clear.

Decisions, decisions... Should I vote for the spokesperson for change, Obama, who votes along party lines, or do I vote for a candidate who has a track record of reaching across the aisle. At this point, it's hard to see either of them getting very far with their promises. Obama cannot institute sweeping change without more Republicans following suit. He is the best orator since Reagan, but historically he's third or forth rate among the candidates. He'll probably win because he's a master of the sound byte, which works well for American media, but if his voting background has is any indication, he'll become the gilded president. McCain has reached "across the aisle" on numerous occassions but may very well lose too many of his home base of supporters to do any good. It's hard to trust him for the future when he has changed positions sometimes. Of course, who has been an adult for 20+ years who hasn't changed their mind on some major topic? Regardless, whoever the winning candidate may be, they had better have one other skill on their resume--miracle worker. They're going to need it.

McBush changes his stated position to suit whoever he's talking to at the time, but he doesn't change his socks without Bush administration permission. Did he vote for the new Webb GI Bill? Nope, he opposed the bill and then skipped the vote. Did he vote against telecom immunity? Nope, he voted with the Bushies on that one. Did he at least vote for SCHIP insurance for children? No, he argued against it and them skipped that one too. At least McCain opposes the Bushies on environmental issues, right? Nope. He talks about it, but he managed to miss both the energy bill cloture vote and the cloture vote for green energy incentives. In fact, he was the only senator to miss those votes and the motion failed by one vote. I know McCain is very busy trying to scrape up donors for his campaign, so I guess it's no surprise the only vote he found time for was to grant immunity to some wealthy corporate types. Think they'll come up with the change McBush is looking for?

Tom O--You talk as if any of the candidates have voted more than 15% of the time during the race. It must be nice to hold an office where you get paid so much at tax payers expense for doing nothing but campaign.

It must be make-over time, for the Ridiculous Republicans and their puppet, Senator " Questionable Conduct "McCain. We don't have to go into the S&L Scandal, you will ignore it anyway. Lets talk about how he just found out and, thus, cared about the disrespected citizens of New Orleans. Another of his mentor's bigger blunders. How about his song and dance about, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Iran !! I will not mention his willful denial of Educational benefits to our returning heros from, another blunder by his mentor and himself, the Iraq war. All because he doesn't want to lose that endless supply of seasoned Veterans for the corporate war being fought in Occupied Iraq. Come on, people, you couldn't find a more viable candidate than Senator " Making Change " McCain ?!!! The party that has almost bankrupt America in now totally bankrupt of ideas, ideals and candidates !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

So, McCain can "change his diapers" according to a poster here.

This ageism and sexism has spewed forth from the Kool-Aid drinking mouths of Obamistas from the get-go. Anything goes, as long as it is not racism. Oh, and let's not forget how you called West Virginian coal-miners hillbillies, putting yourself in company with Dick Cheney. In fact, all of your anti-Clinton rhetoric had its source in old Republican propaganda, though you were too stupid to know it.

one thing I heard months ago on the boob tube. "Hillary, Mcain and Barack all have something in common, they all talk about Barack"..amen. The American public sees how Mcain jumps on Baracks talking points. Baracks opposition even steals his sign ideas, fonts, and wording, because they obviously see the inherent savvy, and leadership in his organization. Go Barack, we are inspired!

When McSame met Bush on the tarmac with his birthday cake - lives were being lost in that very moment by hurricane Katrina. McSame could have climbed on that plane fly to New Orleans and may have saved some lives, but instead he ignored it until it was too late. So what change is he talking about? Of all the years he has been in DC you would think he would come up with his own theme to campaign on instead he copied President Obama's changed theme. There will be no change with McSame.

The real change is coming America in the form of President Obama.

Come on, guys, couldn't you find anything good to say about a U.S. Senator !!? You sure are a hard core audience, you must be of the Ridiculous Republican Party!! The party of a former hero, Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain, of the non-heroes, Bush/Cheney, Libby, Gonzalez, Ashcroft, Ridge, " Brownie ", Chertoff and of course, that great American snake-oil salesman, Raving Rove !! What a wall of Shame !! To think that you really think America will re-elect the likes of you!! No wonder you are known as the Ridiculous Republicans !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

ob08, you are soo right. Had McCain flown there everything would have changed. What would a Senator from AZ have done to stop the hurricane you fool? He sadly trusted the incompetent mayor and governor of LA to take care of the problem. Do you want to blame McCain for the tsunami and the earthquake in China too? Maybe one of you brainless idiots can do a google search and find out what McCain was doing on those days and blame him for those disasters too. Also, since you are blaming the mess from Katrina on McCain, where was Obama during that time? I didn't see him running down there to help out. Was he on a book tour? In Africa? Hanging out with his buds Jeremiah, Willie, and Father Pfleger? He should be blamed more since his very presence would have sent the hurricane packing.

McCain Voted Twice Against Establishing A Commission To Study The Response To Hurricane Katrina. McCain voted twice against establishing a Congressional commission to examine Federal, State, and local response to devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. Gulf Region; and making immediate corrective measures to improve future responses. [2006 Senate Vote #6, 2/2/2006; 2005 Senate Vote #229, 9/14/2005]

Blowing smoke McBush strikes again.

McCain is 100% correct. As someone who usually voted for Democrats I know McCain has a long record of working across party lines. He does what he thinks is best for the country and doesnt just toe the party line like everybody else does including Obama. I would love an Obama supporter to show one time where Obama has gone against his own party ever. I can give 2 instances where McCain has and hard core conservatives hated him for it. The gang of 14 compromise on judges that Obama refused to be a part of, and his work with Tedd Kennedy on immigration reform had the Limbaughs of the world attacking McCain with every breath. That is why the "4 more years of Bush" claims ring hollow to anyone who has been paying attention to the last 8 years. McCain has been the only critic of Bush in the GOP. That is why an independant like Leiberman feels so honored to support McCain. The only people calling hi McBush are Obama supporters who were never going to vote for McCain anyway. What this country needs is a Dem controlled COngress and a White House ruled by a moderate like McCain. That way he can have a balance to the hard core Lefties and Move on org wing of the party that Obama represents. McCain and the new Congress will be forced to work together and reside in the middle where most of us do. What has Obama changed in IL. You want to see how an Obama presidency will look, look at the awful state of IL. They are running major defecits in every category and have the most corruption of any state in the country.

The first change that McCain needs to make is to get rid of Charlie Black and Phil Gramm. You just can't run for president with an agent of foreign governments and an agent of foreign banks as your top advisers. I thought McCain said he learned his lesson back when he got in trouble doing favors for his friend Keating.

I am overjoyed at the win of my personal hero Barack Obama. I believe that his victory is yet another progressive step towards the triumph of socialism in America.

For too long, we have bee hoodwinked by the right-wing reactionary forces whose only goals have been to deny the working classes their rights and to wage wars of imperialist agression overseas.

Now that Obama has won the nomination, those of us on the democratic socialist wing of the polictical spectrum can rejoice at the fact that the Bush neoconservative dogs will be replaced by our cadres, with Barack Obama as the vanguard of our Bolivarian ascent.

Vinny, McCains flip-flops are legend. GOP PANDER BEAR!

I would love an Obama supporter to show one time where Obama has gone against his own party ever.
Posted by: Vinny | June 3, 2008 4:42 PM

Hmmmm....Ah........hmmmmm
how about voting for the war?

McCain's record of change: McCain-Feingold, the landmark legislation that changed campaign finance as we know it.
McCain-Kennedy, the bill that would have secured our borders while giving a path to citizenship to millions of hardworking americans.
McCain-Lieberman, the first bill that recognized the threat of global warming.
Barack Obama's EMPTY rhetoric of change. No bills to speak of and nothing that EVER reached across the aisle to the other party.
But don't worry, he did secure lots of earmark pork kickbacks for his wife and the now suspended Father Pfleger. His longtime political patron stands on the brink of federal prison and taxes have doubled in Illinois thanks to Obama's endorsees. The American people will recognize what real CHANGE is.

The only change this guys gonna offer is whats left in your pocket after him and his rich corporate buddies get done picking all the folding money out of them.

I've already heard his offer, 10-15 more years of war. $10 a gallon gas, more tax breaks for the aristoclass that robs the working people blind, and addtional cuts in education, infrastructure, catastrophe relief, and social welfare programs.

The American dream to him is one where there are only two classes, Filrthy Rich and Dirt Poor. Sorry John, I can't afford you.

jc, Even the guy who had the brain hemorrage voted more times than McCain in the 110th Congress.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/senate/vote-missers/

All three candidates were busy campaigning, but Obama and Hillary managed to find time to vote on the Webb GI bill, the SCHIP bill, and the green energy bills. The "maverick" doesn't vote anymore because he's trying to play both sides. He can't win if he votes against the conservatives paying his bills, but he won't win if his voting record turns more independents against him. That's why he doesn't vote anymore.
