No lobbyist cash for Dem Party: The Swamp

NEW YORK - Now that he's its standard bearer, the Democratic Party is playing by Barack Obama's rules.

A spokesman for the newly-minted presumptive Democratic presidential nominee just told reporters that the Democratic National Committee will no longer accept federal lobbyist or political action committee dollars, following the same restrictions that Obama's campaign observes.

The rules aren't retroactive, so the party can keep any lobbyist cash it raised before today - including, presumably, any lobbyist-related proceeds from the $28,500-a-plate fundraiser for the DNC Obama headlined in New York City last night.

Still, the Obama campaign is casting the move as a first step in the Illinois senator's move to take the party reins and in its effort to position Obama and Democrats as running counter to traditional Washington power interests.

Now that he's the nominee, Obama "will want to do everything he can to make sure the Democratic Party, the party that he leads, conforms to all of his standards of openness and transparency in government and reducing the influence of special interests on political campaigns," spokesman Linda Douglass told reporters moments ago.

Douglass also told reporters that presumptive Republican nominee John McCain called Obama last night at 7 p.m. Eastern to congratulate him on securing the nomination. The men shared a "cordial" conversation, Douglass said, and agreed they looked forward to "a civil discussion in the campaign going forward."

I think what we'll see in the near future is an influx of cash coming directly from the public who believes that Obama is as good as his word. Proof positive as he and the DNC are no longer accepting financing from the corporations whose only interest is profit and not people...

This might be the funniest thing I've ever read! Obama's campaign is run by the man who secured the largest lobbying contract in the history of New York state (David Axelrod). And OF COURSE he waited until the $28,500 a a plate dinner was over. The DNC hasn't raised anything under Howard Dean's "leadership" so this is just yet another Barack Obama lie to try and make it look like they're somehow noble for not doing their jobs. Here's a clue, they're not.

p.s. By following the same rules as Obama observes does that mean the DNC will still accept money from unregistered wives and law partners (like the Obama campaign does) so that reporters have a more difficult time finding out where the kickbacks are?

I am waiting with bated breath for Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain to make a similar pledge, but of course, he would have to get Mr. Keating's, or some similar Lobbyist okay !! One would think, we would welcome a pledge of this nature, instead of undermining it. If Senator Obama has skirted the law, why hasn't a this Ridiculous Republican administration made such charges against Senator Obama ?? I think this is some more fear/smear tactics from the bankrupt Republicans !! it is too bad that they can't add any thing positive to the general election. I see it will be fear and smear from the Ridiculous Republicans, through to November. How unfortunate and disappointing !!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Jeff makes a lot of charges but, like most conservatives, fails to back them up. He hears a lot of things and then repeats them as facts. Most conservatives do that. They hear lies other people pass along and, because they want to believe bad things about "evil liberals", they believe them and then pass them along. Here's a clue for you .. we ignore your so-called "facts". Have a great time following the captain of the Mayflower as he leads the Republicans to defeat.

It's stuff like this that makes me nervous about Obama. It's all show and no substance. Is he going to give the ten of millions he has already collected back? I doubt it. Smoke and mirrors, he must believe his voting base is full of stupid people who will follow him as long as keeps saying "change".
Sheep.

Ya gotta admit that Axelrod and the Saviour are good....but does anyone think that if the Obama campaign weren't so flush with cash already that they and the Dem hierarchy would make this move? I mean really, now...

I love the comments much more than the article.

When has Obama been open and transparent? Linda Douglas sounds like new age psychobabble. Obama hasn't been honest about Jeremiah Wright or Father Pfleger or Tony Rezko what is all this open- ness? Its political BS that's what it is! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

It's called putting your money where your mouth is. By only accepting money directly from the constituency he aspires to represent it's seen as clear indication of two things... One, we the people, get our voices heard; we're the ones ponying up the donations to get this candidate elected. Two, Washington lobbyist and interest peddlers have always used campaign contributions to get their way. Thankfully, that hands finally played itself out. This isn't something revolutionary, it was bound to happen sooner or later. I'm glad it's Barack Obama who kick started the movement. He's only the nominee and already he's changing the game. I'm thinking of that John Lennon song. I've got a feeling that under this mans leadership we will finally see this government live up to its potential to do good. God bless him.

Sorry Steve, but everything Jeff has said has been documented and reported in major mainstream news organs like the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and elsewhere.
Do yourself and the nation a favor -- try to learn something about the candiates and the issues before you vote. Or at the very least, stop being proud to be ignorant. It's embarrassing.

MJ,
Jeff mentioned kickbacks. Who have these illegal kickbacks gone to? You said it's been documented in all those papers but I haven't found any ongoing investigations and/or indictments filed against Obama involving kickback schemes. Seems like Steve nailed you and Jeff on your lies and smears.

Thanks, John. You see, people like MJ (with his buddy Jeff cheering him on) brings up the name of respected newspapers as proof that these charges exist but then, like always, fails to cite specific proof. It is saying that Psychology Today has reported that senators from Arizona (like Goldwater and McCain, for example) are dangerous to their countries and suffer from Napoleonic complexes.

Well of course, john. When a senator crafts lergislation to suit his contributors, then the public naturally infers that there is a kickback. In other words, favors granted for money tendered.
Here's one specific example for you:
Obama has told us on-the-stump that he had passed a bill requiring nuclear plants to promptly report radioactive leaks. This came after residents of Illinois had complained they were not told of leaks that occurred at a nuclear plant operated by Exelon Corporation.
The truth, however, was that Obama allowed the bill to be amended in Committee by Senate Republicans. They replaced language mandating reporting with verbiage that merely offered guidance to regulators on how to address unreported leaks. The NY Times (February 3, 2008) noted that even this version of Obama's bill failed to pass the Senate, so it was unclear why Obama was claiming to have passed the legislation. Obama constituent Joe Cosgrove, a park district director in Will County, Ill., where low-level radioactive runoff had turned up in groundwater, is quoted as follows:
"Senator Obama's staff was sending us copies of the bill to review, and we could see it weakening with each successive draft. The teeth were just taken out of it."
The New York Times story further noted:
"Since 2003, executives and employees of Exelon, which is based in Illinois, have contributed at least $227,000 to Mr. Obama's campaigns for the United States Senate and for president. Two top Exelon officials, Frank M. Clark, executive vice president, and John W. Rogers Jr., a director, are among his largest fund-raisers."

MJ,
Great example of Obama reaching across party lines and compromising. That's how bills get passed when you don't have a majority. Very rarely do the laws that get passed resemble the bills as they were first introduced. Didn't you study Civics.
