Obama starts Web-rumor response site: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mike Dorning

Rumors always have played a powerful role in political campaigns. But the Internet now permits thinly sourced reports--whether true or not--to spread at the speed of light across the nation and the globe.

The Barack Obama campaign has now turned to the web to rapidly respond to rumors that have the potential to damage the campaign. And the campaign is hoping the same peer-to-peer viral method of spreading information that gives credibility to rumors can be used to squelch them.

The campaign this morning unveiled a web site, www.fightthesmears.com, devoted to countering damaging material it deems false. The site features campaign responses to rumors and asks supporters to upload their address books to email those rebuttals to friends, family and colleagues.

The top of the list of "smears" this morning is a report that a video exists of an angry Michelle Obama denouncing "whitey." The rumor has spread widely on the Internet and made its way onto some broadcast media, though the campaign says the report is false and no such video has surfaced.

"The Obama campaign isn't going to let dishonest smears spread across the internet unanswered. Whenever challenged with these lies we will aggressively push back with the truth and help our supporters debunk the false rumors floating around the internet. This website is an action center that allows supporters to upload their address books and send emails to all of their friends. It's not enough to just know the truth, we have to be proactive and fight back," Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor said in an e-mail to reporters announcing the web site.

Watch the video of Mr. Obama reacting to a reporter questioning him about this so-called "rumor" concerning Michelle Obama being on a panel with Mrs. Louis Farrakhan where she was alleged to have used the word "whitey" in a racist rant.

Obama would NOT say she would never do it, and he did NOT say it would NEVER exist.

He was parsing his words in a llegal sense in the event such a video ever came up.

If you KNEW your wife would NEVER say such a thing, then you would be LOUD and FORCEFUL about the issue. Perhaps say it COULDN'T exist.

I think he knows it could exist. And if the Republicans have it, they won't release it until October anyway.

If someone said this about my wife, I could be a lot more forceful in my denial.

Wonder why Mr. Obama can't?

Yeah, he can deal with the rumors, but it's too bad for Barack that he can't combat the truths...
- Like, for example his taking money from lobbyists and lying about it. And employing lobbyists as campaign staff.
- Or his 17-plus year personal financial relationship with the political "fixer" Toney Rezko.
- And his connection to Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born billionaire, associate of Rezko and international Criminal.
- Or the fact that he has endorsed the worst, most corrupt and incompetent politicians in Cook County -- Todd Stroger, Emil Jones and Richard Daley.

Well MJ and Tod, it's going to be quite a bitter pill when Barack is sworn in as your President, won't it?
Who is going to put up you old and cranky curmudgeons if your President isn't an old and cranky curmudeon?

Get ready for big changes!

B Hussein Obama is setting up an internet propaganda machine kind of like a Clinton War Room to handle what Obama calls distractions.
Obama wants to talk about health care and other issues without confronting his character and judgement flaws.
No candidate in modern times has associated himself with such smarmy characters.
Then when it gets hot he says that's not the Tony Rezko I knew or the Jeremiah Wright that I knew, or the Rev Michael Pfleger I knew. I have spent my life in strange situations Obama says that are criticized by my enemies.William Ayers was my neighbor not a terrorist. I like Louis Farakan what do you mean he is anti-semetic that's not the Louis Farakhan I knew. Todd Stroger is not a crook not the Todd Stroger Obama knew. Alexi Giannoulias did not make loans to the outfit even though he made loans to convicted Tony Rezko. That's not the Alexi Obama endorsed or that's not the Alexi Obama knew.Ali Ata, Nadmi Auchi, the Mahajans there not the ones Obama knew and on and on.
The internet site is going to be working 24/7 to just repeat the Obama mantra that's not the ones I knew.
Only in America would the DNC nominate this man with a paper thin resume and this sordid amount of wrong doers. Didn't he meet regular people apparently not! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

I love all the hatred directed at Obama and his family by the Republicans.

Just what has this man done to deserve such hatred? Did he let 9/11 happen? Did he lie to start a war? Did he waste our surplus? Did he run up massive debt and deficits? Did he let a US city be destroyed by a hurricane? Did he break the Geneva Conventions? Did his policies put us in a recession?

Out comes the poster child that exemplifies why this is needed. Smear and fear Jerry rears his ugly head once again to show America Obamas middle name. What child like mind makes a point of a name?

BHO is a leftist liberal product of corrupt Chicago politics who hypocritically preaches all kinds of platitudes. When others attack him like his followers attack others the boob has to setup a smear web site- what a jerk - the only people that will visit is are those that have bad view already and this will expand their bad ideas even more..

Hey, he stole the idea from Snopes!
And there won't be sweeping changes. You are naive to think so.

Well MJ and Tod, it's going to be quite a bitter pill when Barack is sworn in as your President, won't it?
Posted by: Abbie | June 12, 2008 12:12 PM
Well Abbie, I'm not at all surprised that you're missing some rather obvious points so I'll spell them out for you.
First, in light of Obama's history the slogans about change are obviously BS. He's Mr Business-as-Usual. I know that doesn't bother you, but thinking voters have a problem with it.
Secondly, sooner or later the press is going to get bored and they're going to turn a cold, critical eye on Obama. Even if he wins in november (it's not a sure thing) his presidency will be crippled by scandal.

No candidate in modern times has associated himself with such smarmy characters.

I found this line amusing. All politicians associate with and ARE smarmy characters. Hell, Bill Clinton IS a smarmy character. To pretend that all politicians in general are not a bunch of power-hungry manipulators is simply partisan hyperbole.

I see an Onion article in the making unless of cours ethey too are under the Obama- whammy tooo...

I hope SNL parodies this also.

Maybe a Snopes-Obama page...

I don't care if my President is black, white or some other ethnicity, male or female. What I do care about is that my President is not a redical on either end, conservative or liberal and that he/she not wrap themselves in the flag or their religon, just use it to guide their service to the nation and the people.
We are the leaders of the free world. and, yes, we can do a better job. this statement applies to the political leaders from both sides of the aisle.
One of the great advantages of digital television is that we can now receive direct news broadcasts from around the world (MHZ networks over PBS). Anyone who follows the news from Russia, Germany, France, Asia, India, Afganistan, Taiwan and Japan knows that we are going to have to stay committed in those regions. We cannot simply pull out as senator Obama claims.
He calls for change, but what change does he have in mind?
It seems he wants us to pull back and isolate ourselves from the world. We did this before WWI and we paid dearly for it. Before WWII the congress kept us isolated from the world once again and again we paid dearly for it."the lessons of history, when ignored are bound to repeat themselves." We need to pay better attention to the world, its' needs and its' lessons.
Our invasion of Iraq was based on false information that apparently was politically manipulated. What is real about that is that we desatabilized the government of Iraq. Now some of us expect the Iraqi people to govern themselves. What is overlooked is that for the time Saddam Hussain was it charge, he did not allow the people to learn how to live responsibily in a democracy or govern themselves in a democracy. Our nation has been in business for over 230 years and we are still learning. Can we really expect another group of people to accomplish this feat in the short amount of time they have had? And remember, for the first bunch of years at our beginning, we were left alone to figure it out. Yes, I know, the difference is that the British did not stick around to act as advisors.

Please consider these arguements as you decide who to select as our next President.

Actually, the bitter pill will be that nothing is really going to "change" with Obama in office. He's as crooked as the rest of them, he's just not been around as long to have the reputation.

Hey MJ - I saw you referred to Todd Stroger as corrupt and incompetent. Give the guy a break, he's only 12 years old ! ! I think all of us would be considered incompetent if we ran one of the largest budgets in USA as a 12 year old. Don't worry, during the next 30 years that he has the job, never saying no to a tax increase, just like his daddy, he'll figure out how to competently raise our taxes.

What do these posters always use race or hate?

We want to know why BO, who claims to be as white as the driven snow, have a 20+ years freindship with noted racists, felons and terroists?

Why his close cicrcle of freinds included Rezko, Wright, Pfleger, Ayers and others?

Why did he endorse Todd Stroger?

Why did BO choose Johnson to lead his search for VP, who recieved special treatment from Countrywide - a sub-prime mortgage complay that BO blasted?

Why did BO choose Eric Holder to lead his search for VP, who helped pardon Marc Rich during the Clinton presidency.

In 1983, financier Rich was indicted for evading more than $48 million in taxes, and charged with 51 counts of tax fraud, as well as running illegal oil deals with Iran during the 1979-1980 hostage crisis. During his last week in office, President Bill Clinton pardoned Rich, who had fled the U.S. during his prosecution and was residing in Switzerland. Clinton's eleventh-hour move, along with pardons of his half-brother, Roger, and former business partner Susan McDougal, outraged Republicans and Democrats alike.

There is no hate in asking these questions.

Sen. Obama and his staff are USING THE 'NET FOR ITS INTENDED PURPOSE - to tell the TRUTH. It's easy to post lies about a candidate, and hope they'll stick, that those people who are still in denial about the state of this country will fall for them. However, there are millions of intelligent people in the U.S. who cannot be tricked!

Of course, the Republicans can not deal with someone who is willing to face their lies and assertions with facts. All they have are lies and innuendos. The biggest liar (until Karl ---anyone note the Marxist spelling of his name -- Rove gets going again ) is Rush (Of course I have a prescription for that) Limbaugh. Let's consider the source. They are Republicans. They can not think for themselves.

Why can't those that follow the right focus on being "right" and ensure that all of our tax dollars are being spent on the war. Is that not true? Focusing on the Obama family is NOT family values.

The site should come with a "track changes" option just like document editing tools. That way we can see how his rebuttals to all this supposed rumor mongering change over time. . . How many examples do we need to see before the general public and the media recognize that it's really not just rumor and innuendo?

Well MJ and Tod, it's going to be quite a bitter pill when Barack is sworn in as your President, won't it?

Thank you, Abbie. Your comment shows that this election will not only be decided based on race but also on age. Senior citizens should unite against this threat from the young and inexperienced.

As much as I like Obama, voted for him in the primary, and will most likey vote for him in November, there is one thing that does bother me.
Obama is half white he's not just black and I feel he has dissmissed that part of himself
in his book especially and his campaign. That does not sit with me very well. Obama is multiracial and need to be proud of that. I don't see that.

Some of these comments are absolutely ridiculous. And what's wrong with the middle name Hussein? The last famous guy I know with the name Hussein ran Iraq much better than Mr. Bush could ever dream--and I didn't have to pay for it, either!

Nothing wrong with that name at all, but this guy you seem to admire (Saddam Hussein) was a vicious dictator who murdered and imprisoned many hundreds of thousands of people.
You can argue that the war was a bad idea that was poorly executed and I won't dispute it, but you sound like a hopeless fool defending SH.

It's so interesting to me that none of the "problems" with Obama posted by people responding to this article, are about the political issues which will affect us for years to come.

When are we Americans going to grow up and discuss policy rather than personality?

When are we going to stop playing the "Gotcha Games"?

--------
Is this one of the ridiculous comments, too?

I voted for Obama in the Primary, as I will in the election in November.

Who cares what a person's middle name is? I don't but those who've brought this up, have they checked McCain's middle name? Probably not. What if his middle name was Adolph? Like Adolph Hitler. Would McCain supporters be upset if McCain's actions correlated to Adolph Hitler, even if he'd done nothing like Adolph Hitler?

The shoe on the other foot is sometimes uncomfortable.

What a country it will be when Barack is President. Children's Museums next to the reflecting pool, mandatory yearly raises for Emil Jones and National level jobs for the Stroger Family. What a great system our possibly future President comes from. Good thing to know that he has 'reformed' the political system in his own district and state. Maybe he should have tackled this stuff on a lower level before claiming he could do it for the whole country.

To RSC

Why his close circle of friends included Rezko, Wright, Pfleger, Ayers and others?

a) Rezko is not a close friend.
b) Wright and Pfleger are not racists; they are for all people fulfilling their potential.
c) Ayers is not a close friend.

Why did he endorse Todd Stroger?
Because he was a democrat running against a Republican.

Why did BO choose Johnson to lead his search for VP, who recieved special treatment from Countrywide - a sub-prime mortgage complay that BO blasted?

There is no proof he received special treatment. He received two loans under the average rate and one above. We do not know the other conditions surrounding the loan, such as down payment, points, and other legitimate business arrangements with Countrywide, such as other accounts with significant cash balances.

Why did BO choose Eric Holder to lead his search for VP, who helped pardon Marc Rich during the Clinton presidency.

Eric Holder did not help pardon Mr. Rich. Mr. Clinton did that and is solely responsible. Eric Holder did not promote the pardon and the path to the pardon bypassed him.

This is hillarious! As a black 50 year old man, I can see through this one a mile away...I haven't heard a black person use the term "whitey" since the 60s. C'mon they can surely make up better lies than this!

Here's my biggest problem with Obama:

Relevant experience to justify election to the most powerful office in the world: 1 inspired speech given at a Dem convention

Seriously, where is the backround, the record, the experience upon which to base handing this guy the keys to the White House?? If he is elected, down the road people will look back on this election and wonder how it even happened that Obama was considered qualified to be put up as a candidate in the first place.

It just amazes me how every post about Barack leads to a swarm of conservative trolls insisting through conjecture and presumption that it is somehow clear that he is a man to be distrusted. It's completely absurd.

If Barack Obama had such legitimate character flaws, why do people have to create fictitious stories, accusations, and outright lies in the first place to try and disparage his reputation?

It would seem to me that the right is afraid of just how good a guy he is, and, so instead of trying to assail the unassailable, people are resorting to try and play on people's fears and accuse him of being some kind of radical.

Nothing he has said, done, or exhibited in his behavior would indicate any of these things, and so instead people try to apply the most negative moments of everyone he's ever known as though they are his own actions.

I'm looking forward to his presidency. He's smart, he's passionate, he cares about America's future, and, Congress willing, he's going to solve or make great progress on cleaning up the disastrous mess the Bush administration will have left behind.

"Hell, Bill Clinton IS a smarmy character"

Umm, no. And he doesn't have friends like Rezko and Dohrn!

Oh, and "bigdog"--I'm sorry... What experience did Mr. Bush have? Some state politics? His daddy was president? We've got a power-hungry, trigger-happy, reckless, lying, incompetent megalomaniac in the White House right now.

Just because anti-left pundits on FOX News ask what experience Sen. Obama has, uses a little conjecture, and nobody ever actually answers the question, doesn't mean there isn't an answer to the question.

I tend to think his many years in politics, the smart people he does and will surround himself with, his thoughtful, decisive methods, his incredible education, his legislative experience, and his clear grasp of the state of our nation and how to improve our security and make America stronger and work better for all Americans, more than qualifies him for the office of President of the United States.

He's got a lot more than a speech (although, I suppose if you only get your news in snippets small enough to fit in a fortune cookie, you might have such an inaccurate perception of his experience).

It's not like every four years we give someone a set of keys and say "Go have fun running the country by yourself," either (although Bush seems to think that's what the Supreme Court gave him the right to back in 2000).

In comparison to Senator Obama and his clearly laid-out goals, President Bush barely has the a Cliff's Notes-level understanding of governance, leadership, or making smart decisions. The Senator, on the other hand, appears to be quite solid in his judgement and ability to handle situations.

I mean, what's our other option? McCain, who votes against his own legislation? McCain, who thinks it's "not too important" whether or not we've got troops in Iraq, who seems to have no concept of the correct way to end this conflict? McCain, who thinks health care should stay just as inadequate and damaging to our nation's health as it is today? I mean, what a joke. What intelligent person would actually vote for him if you listen to what he's saying--especially if your impressions of Mr. Obama are entirely anecdotal and without a reliable source?

it's humorous that the rightwingnuts have become bottomfeeders.

the GOP is feverishly rasping at straws. this is all too funny.

He will call this group "The Ministry of Truth", or minitruth for short.

I hate to be the one to inform you - but all of this "against' Obama is not just coming from Republicans. I have heard lots of forever Democrats say that they just can't vote for this man. My father is 80 years old and has always voted Democrat - this will be his first time to vote Republican!

I do not think any of this matters. HIs race means nothing to me. Can he do the job? Personally, he lacks the depth of experience to be our President. He record clearly shows that. I also felt the same way about Hillary. Why does the Democratic party put up such weak candiadtes? There is no such thing as a perfect candidate, but surely the are more qualified people available.

"I hate to be the one to inform you - but all of this "against' Obama is not just coming from Republicans. I have heard lots of forever Democrats say that they just can't vote for this man. My father is 80 years old and has always voted Democrat - this will be his first time to vote Republican!"

I want you to remember that when "war machine" McCain pushes that shiney red button next year and we end up in World War X.
You all should stop being racist and open your eyes before we die. Nuf said.

II just say Obama is a man we trully do not known anything about . who he really is . Is he really for America, or where is his true allegiance. I do not think its for us. I really do not . I am no racist by any means . a persons skin color has little to do with a person. As President of The United States we need someone that will be ready day 1.. who is the most experienced... there will be no on the job training .also someone who is for the people and all the people .. black , white .. all of the american people .. not just the wealthy elite .. most of us are just average americans.. we are not millionaires and such.. just normal people . a true president must trully love the country he represents and I do not think Obama does or his wife for that matter .We need a true fighter . a true winner. strong enough to be able to defend our country . one with the capability, and intelligence to once again make our country strong . make it possible to thrive once again . someone with the ability to make a change , but a real change . bring those those gas prices .. real healthcare for all , and affordable . and the list goes on . We want our country back .. and we the people should have the right to expect that we have someone in office that will be able to do his job , and from day 1 . We put our very lives in the hands of the President ,a nd so its up to us the people to make sure we vote the right person into office .. someone who will fight for us the american people.. not just because its his or hers job , but because his loves the country as much as we do . We need someone else running on third party as well so we have more of a choice here . we also as americans must make it clear that we the american people want to be assured that the people who are allowed to run are fully investigated and all made known to us the american people . and all must be natural born citizens .. there are a lot of rumours going around its true .. some may not be fact , but again a lot of them very well might be. so we need to make our voices known , and before voting someone into office we must be sure this person can absolutely do the job , qand will always work for our country . striving to always making it better . we were once one of the most powerful , and prosperous countries in the worls and we can be again , but that depends on us the people . Its is the choice of the people.. so lets make our voices heard

when Jimmy Carter ran back in '76, I was a gullible young man who believed Jimmy could change the world. History proves this wrong. Today O.B.'s rhetoric seems to have the same effect on todays young people. A lot of perfect world dreams with no substance or true experience. I believe the Dems would have been better off with experience and use novelties to sell toys or cars.

Jerry "Be careful. I know Karl Rove." White,

Tell me more about the IRP's recent meeting where the IRP discused whether or not to push Barack's middle name. C,mon make us proud.

i'm starting to think all of the same right wing n utjobs who post these comment are really starting to become liberal....i mean, they recycle! recycle the same crap every day...(i.e. wright, muslim, resko, blah, blah, blah).

i wish i could see your faces when barack is sworn in as our president. you're all so angry that i feel sorry for anyone you surround yourselves with.

no way is the military industrial going to let obama win

Dear writers and editors of the Obama's FightTheSmears site,

I have a hot tip for you on another person describing Obama as having a "Muslim background": Malik Obama, the candidate's half-brother, in a recent interview cited in the Jerusalem Post.

Please track down this nefarious malefactor and ensure his statements are corrected.

Always happy to do my part to help,

from NRO

Michelle Obama needs to clean up her extemporaneous style of writing and speaking..re her response to Laura Bush:
'sort of, you know', etc. just doesn't cut it for a Princeton educated woman.
