by John McCormick
In a new 60-second ad set to start running in 18 states on Friday, Sen. Barack Obama's campaign cites Public Law 110-181 when he talks about his efforts to extend "health care for wounded troops who'd been neglected."
While the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee authored provisions that ultimately made it into the law, he did not vote for its passage on Jan. 22, when he was busy campaigning in advance of the South Carolina primary.
But neither did Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee. He was also busy campaigning when the vote was taken on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008. The bill, H.R. 4986, was easily passed without either man's vote.

Let's compare both of the candidates voting records and I think you have no choice but to admit that Senator Obama has been more conscientious than Senator McCain, when it comes to their voting. The same can be said about their positions on the issues, Senator Obama has ecked out his own positions, whereas Senator McCain continues to parrot President Bush and the inept Republicans !!

McCormick, you hack, there are 20 YEARS of bills that McCain both authored and passed in his record. The reason this is significant is because your messiah has had precious little time to get anything done because he's had his eye on higher office since his election. McCain has a record he can run on, Obama does not. That's why he should've made this vote. Face it, Obama has absolutely not represented the people of Illinois or any of the causes he purports to believe in during his short stay in the US Senate. He's been too busy campaigning while promising not to run for president in 2008.

I would assume both candidates were confident their vote was not needed and knew the bill would pass without their presence. It is significant and admirable that Obama wants to extend health care to wounded who have been neglected!

Well, duh!
There are these things called telephones and text messages and faxes and possibly even telegrams to tell a Senator running for President that the thing's gonna pass without him burning more planet killing jet fuel.
C'mon now--go to a press conference and ask some questions about the jacked up oil profits.

Obama is the greatest
" smoke & mirrors " person that I have witnessed in 50 years of election rhetoric!

This is an example of not being truthful. If he does this in such a blatant way, what else is he not being entirely truthful ? Is there a politician who can just say it like it is?
Posted by: Celeste | June 20, 2008 7:50 AM
You see Obama worshipers. This proves once again that your man is just like any other politician. They all lie, cheat and deceive us. So now that the best person to beat McCain is out of the race (HRC) I wish you all good luck in November!

Yeah, but did McCain mention the bill in his ad, NO!
Obama likes to attach himself to things he did not do.
Obama likes to have people believe that he is a patriot = he is NOT!

Give me a break-- he authored part of the bill....

Why is everyone surprised that Obama would take credit for other peoples word or state he voted for passage? Take the time to check out his legislative term in Illinois he had a habit of doing this through out his tenure. Obama continuously tells half truths, but the American voter wants to believe what ever of him. He is deceitful and not trust worthy, he will do anything , say anything to get the Presidency.

Obama has a track record of not working for the people he is supposed to be representing. Ran for Senate in Illinois and has spent most of his time running for the presidency and making speeches for other people outside of the state. He has a terrible record in actually voting on bills. Since he has not even served one term in a federal position you need to go to his state record to see the abysmal voting record.
And authoring is hardly accurate as well. His name is partially on the bill's but he has not "authored" them.

Sounds like he was still much more involved with it than all the Springfield legislation that Emil Jones attached Obama's name to.

Why do people feel that Obama is all "smoke and mirrors" when a simple look at our current president certainly shows that this cowboy pulled the wool over this country's eyes in one of the biggest and most devastating ways possible! The entire world suffers because of Bush, yet America still seems to think he's their boy. Why are our citizens so frightened of intelligence? So we chose a party boy for president because that's who the USA relates to most? Well then, that's the end of this great country for sure. Have another beer.

Is this like Obama saying he never voted for the war? Well, sorta.
Posted by: SS | June 20, 2008 9:22 AM
Sorry to disappoint you Bob from Illinois but Barack Obama has missed only 253 votes (42.7%) during the current Congress compaired to McCains complete slap in the face to the people of Arizona and his party with 361 missed votes (61.0%)!!! Thats almost 20% more missed votes than Obama! So before you shoot your mouth off do your research! And I'd like to add that Hillary Clinton has missed only 194 votes (32.8%).
Posted by: Scot S. Blakeley | June 20, 2008 9:45 AM
He can't claim credit for something he didn't vote on. If he wrote portions of the bill, which portions? Were they significant? Did he support the entire bill or only the portions that he wrote. He claims to be different and for change. Then be different...be honest. Say you support the idea, not that you passed the legislation.

How long has the Messiah Obama been in the Senate? Not long enough to claim he has some kind of record for caring about anything. McCain was taking care of soldiers and veterans when Obama was in diapers. Obama is all talk and no hat....

How about congress getting into the 21st century and allow congressman to vote by: text, fax, email, etc? Or even video conferrence? Heck, my lap top has a web-cam, I could be there if I wanted to. Or, if they must do things the old way, at least allow a "proxy" vote in their abscnce.

obama has a track record in Illinois of voting 'Present'... not a few times, not twenty or thirty, but over 100 times! Talk about a coward afraid to take a stand. With no experience, no record, and a history of questionable relationships, its no wonder they are seeking out the young and dumb.

Who are you people? The ones who lurk in the shadows ready to tear down Obama at the slightest provocation (or not)? You sit by your computers waiting for the most innocuous story so that you can sharpen your knives. Not one of you has posed a rational, legitimate argument against Obama for president. Just snide, snarky remarks that undermine your cause. You're wasting your time and energy...go plant a tree or something...

No need to seize on this no-vote issue, heat up the rhetoric on race or even wring hands over Michelle Obama. You now have the two candidates for President. One a Democrat, to the left, and the other, a Republican, to the right. That should be enough to know for about 90% of voters.
Can't decide? That surprises me, but for those on the fence, go to http://www.johnmccain.com/ and http://www.barackobama.com/index.php and look at their positions on what matters to you. Also, I see a link on this Trib web page that compares the candidates. Is the war in Iraq, universal health care, or Supreme Court appointments a big issue for you? Your choice is a no-brainer.
Can't stand the prospect of the other guy getting in? Contribute to the candidate of your choice with your dollars and/or time.

Not sure what this proves. He cited a bill he helped to author and turns out neither of the candidates voted on it? So what? As for the comments that Obama has a better voting record and McCain parrots Bush, try checking your facts before spewing that crap. Obama is the most liberal senator in our government. He's a socialist, and he just happens to speak well, so people listen to what he says. He's frightening, and he's going to steal the money out of my pocket to fund programs I don't need.
Posted by: BCG | June 20, 2008 10:48 AM
I think if we look at Obama's voting record, what we will find is that he never takes a position on anything that would come back to haunt him in his constant quest for higher ofice. Someone needs to start exposing what this "politician" did to get elected to the Senate in Illinois, how he eliminated opposition, then how Emil Jones "gave" him legislation to get passed, bills that others had worked years on; how he was elected US Senator only because of the Republican problems which eventually ended up with Alan Keyes running against him. No where in his record is there anything that qualifies him to hold the highest office in the land. He will be just as bad for this country as George Bush has been - he is just as arrogant, smug, and condescending as Bush - we are just trading a conservative for a liberal - big government and the higher taxes to pay for it! And, how is it that the press mocked Hillary Clinton for having all the former Clinton people, like former Secretary of State Madeline Albright on stage with her, and when we see Barack Obama with his foreign policy team - there is Madeline Albright sitting next to him! What a farce - if voters don't wake up soon, we will face another 4 to 8 years with our country going in the wrong direction - only we'll just have higher taxes to pay for all his social programs!

Scot S Blakeley, Yes, itn't it a shame that the DNC nominated the wrong candidate and cheated the candidate that would do the best job for getting this country back together. I hope with all my heart and money that Obama loses in November. But I am sure that the DNC will find some way to cheat his way into the Whitehouse.

Obama is proposing government controlled health care- name one government initiative that isn't a bureaucratic mess- and one that doesn't have millions of pork tied to it! And just how are we going to provide healthcare- well, you people bringing home a pay check should get used to alot less- and starting at $50K for a family of four- paying an additional $3000 a year! the money comes from somewhere people- and that is from anyone who is employed! Welcome to socialism!

As a matter of principal, Senator Obama should have shown up for work, cast his vote, and finished the job, particularly, if had intended to amplify his support for the plan. It's basic campaign & elections 101.

Okay, I read through this whole blog and found a lot of unsupported opinion and only a few facts. I am an old white guy who used to be a Republican. I became an Independent and now am leaning Democratic. The policies the Republicans are supporting are those for selfish greedy people who care not what happens to anyone else and are interested only in their own comfort.
It's time to try a little more of something our Judeo-Christian teachings teach us, helping others. I am comfortable and my taxes will go up if Obama is elected. I cannot continue burying my head in the sand as our soldiers whom we glorify are poorly treated and our kids here in Chicago are shooting one another. Something has to change.

Gee, why am I not surprised that Obama has been caught lying again? Change we can believe in? We haven't heard anything out of Obama's mouth that we can believe in.

Note to the Obama supporters: Bush is not running.
Next,
"Come on people, lets stop bickering on small stuff and stick to the bigger issues in America. The bill passed so let it be..............."
The point is that Obama has a national television ad where he is taking credit for it. We didn't bring it up, Obama did.
"Not one of you has posed a rational, legitimate argument against Obama for president. "
Unsupported assertion. You are willfully ignoring the arguments. There are many substantive, easy to follow arguments why this man should not be President. Let me repeat a few of them for you: he has no experience, and his foreign policy experience and judgment are very lacking; he was wrong about the "surge" of forces into Iraq; he attended a racist pseudo-church for decades and associates with cop-killing terrorists; his rhetoric is about advancing race relations, but all his campaign has done is subtly manipulate racial attitudes and send race relations backward; he has no legislative accomplishments; he has no accomplishments in private industry; he has no military experience; he is a hard-left socialist who will advance policies on taxes and socialized medicine that are anathema to many Americans; he *will* seek to increase the size of government and its scope and power over ever more aspects of our lives; he will nominate hard-left judges in the mold of Ginsburg to the Supreme Court; his Social Security proposal is a *huge* increase in marginal rates; the Congress is already controlled by Democrats and it would be unwise to hand both branches to that party because, unbridled, they will make disastrous tax policy, energy, trade, and strategic geopolitical decisions; he wants to handle Islamic terrorism as a law enforcement issue like the Clinton administration; he has been dishonest, by his own admission, about, inter alia, NAFTA, about his plans for Iraq, and various historical details of his life. And I am only just getting started...
Now, disagree with any of these arguments if you want, but don't live in an insular fantasy world where people don't have real reasons for not wanting this man to be President.

John,
Regarding this line: "While the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee authored provisions that ultimately made it into the law", how does it square with this:
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=Y2YxNTk0NzBiNjgzZmY0MjEwYzg5ODViMjMxN2JlY2Y=
According to this, nothing relating to extending health services to wounded troops who'd been neglected, authored by Obama, made it into that bill. Or did you have some specific passages you can use to correct the National Review online blog post?
By the standards the Obama campaign is operating under, every Congressman and Senator can take credit for every piece of legislation that ever gets proposed or even discussed and can call that "passing legislation".
And John, McCain didn't run the ad claiming to have passed that legislation, so I'm not sure of the reason for your mentioning him in this blog entry, except to try to balance out every potentially critical mention of Obama with a qualifying comment or equivalent critical comment about McCain.
Posted by: Michael May | June 23, 2008 5:59 PM
John McCain does not support our troops. Read my blog where I outline his disgusting voting record (with links). Or don't. I don't really care. www.whyjohnmccainsucks.blogspot.com

By mentioning the fact that McCain also failed to vote on the bill, libs everywhere are once again engaging in their beloved moral relativeism. We've seen this many times before. Remember when Bill Clinton was caught in a lie and we were all told that it was ok because we all lie? What about the time we were told that JFK, like Clinton, cheated on his wife? Obama is no different. He's been caught once again and now someone has to justify his actions by telling us that it's ok because McCain didn't vote on the bill either. That's not the issue. The issue is that Obama is attempting to pad his thin resume by deceiving the American people into thinking that he passed a bill that he had nothing to do with and didn't even take the time to vote on. McCain may be many things good and bad, and so far he has ran a terrible campaign because he refuses to hit Obama hard on critical winning issues that the American people care about such as drilling for oil and winning in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, he at least has a resume that he doesn't need to pad to get elected. Wake up America and open your eyes: Obama is a fraud who will say and do anything to get elected. The evidence is plainly visable and continues to mount daily. This flap over the campaign ad is just the latest example. How many more examples do the people need?
Posted by: dreemweev1 | June 28, 2008 11:26 PM
Obama's first trem as Senetor he did not vote 80% of the time. Now he is not voting because he is running for President. He has not stated what change he is even talking about bring to America or how to do it.

Senator Obama already sponsored legislature to put the federal check on-line so we could see what the government is doing with our money.
Palin gave a speech today stating that she and John would sponsor legislature to put the federal check on-line. What's up with her John and Sarah?
