UPDATE: The AP reports that the Obama campaign will not sponsor a race car. "The Obama campaign will not be sponsoring a car in the Sprint Cup series, though we will continue to look for ways to reach out to voters and convey Senator Obama's message of change," said campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

by John McCormick and Katie Fretland

Reflecting just how important white working-class voters are to Sen. Barack Obama, his campaign is in talks to sponsor a stock car in an Aug. 3 race in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, Sports Illustrated reported on its website today.

The car under consideration: BAM Racing's No. 49 Sprint Cup car.

SI said it would be the first time a major presidential candidate has sponsored a race car in a National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) series. An announcement is expected as soon as July 23.

Obama has his work cut out for him with NASCAR fans, according to reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who said he thinks they lean to McCain, according to a post at U.S. News & World Report. (The comments attached to the post suggest Johnson may be right.)

Last week, Obama said he would consider campaigning at a NASCAR event, prompting Comedy Central to come up with a doctored photo of the Illinois Democrat decked out in a racing jumpsuit with the Wonder brand.

NASCAR comes to the Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday in Joliet, Ill.

I figure McCain already has the low IQ redneck vote locked up. That's the Rethuglican "base" afterall.

NASCAR allows openly racist vendors to maintain booths during races. Much about a NASCAR fans character is revealed when they continue to sit in the pews....bleachers for 20 years while this organization tacitly approves racist t-shirts and other contemptable merch to be sold. Also there is pending lawsuit detailing the harassment that a black female can expect to receive if she becomes a part of the NASCAR family. Why do these fans continue to sit in the pews...bleachers?

The driver would agree to race around in a circle only at the serious risk to his life for putting an Obama sticker on his/her car. Assassination and threatening the lives of pols is par for the course with Republicans. Mayor Daley can't go anywhere without guards because of the constant threat to his life from right wing goons, yet in NYC, a much larger city teeming with Democrats, Republican Mayor Bloomberg can ride the subway and read the paper without fear of losing his life. Democrats are peaceful and caring while Republicans are brutal and savage.

So this is how Obama chooses to spend millions donated by hard-working Americans to his campaign?

Poor judgement. Imagine how he'll spend your tax dollars.

The question has now been answered "how far will BO go to the right" the only thing left is for BO to wave the confederate flag.

Maybe not the most traditional use of campaign funds, but I think it's kind of cool to sponsor a flashy race car rather than throwing the money into a commercial that will play over and over again. I think it sends a message that the campaign wants to try innovative, exciting ways to promote their candidate. Sure, some of the people who support NASCAR might not be the most academically impressive people, but IQ shouldn't be determinative of who a candidate tries to reach. Lighten up, people.

"The low IQ redneck vote," hey? That's the way to win. Belittle the sport that has the biggest attendance in the nation and then have another ill-brained supporter disrespect all of the millions of grandfathers. Who are the Obamaniacs going to kiss off next? Hard-working, church-going middle class whites? Nope, Obama already did that.

It's gonna be a hybrid, right? Or run on batteries?

Surely the Gaia-worshippers wouldn't want Flip-ama to sponsor a 3 mpg gas guzzler!

Money that contributors have donated to Obama's campaign was given to him specifically to be used on advertising--this is another of Obama'a innovative marketing strategies that, like his internet fundraising techniques, are better adapted to today's world than McCain's strategies. Obama's resourcefulness in campaigning shows that he has the ability to similarly bring a new outlook to the presidency.

After Obama told Americans to essentially roll over and accept the colonization of our country by Latin America, am guessing that maybe, just maybe, the NASCAR-types might not be so fond of him.

People who are not angered by Obama's comments were not listening. Obama appears to wish for the death of Anglo-Saxon America with its belief in rule of law, property rights and free speech. Otherwise, why replace it with the culture of Latin America which supports none of these principles, hence the poverty, corruption and violence there.

Perfect...turn left, left, left and do nothing but go in circles...just like this congress' majority!

Considering NASCAR fans number in the MILLIONS, it's actually a pretty good way to advertise. Just too bad (sorry Kenny) that Schrader tends to be at the back of the pack and involved in accidents most of the time, so outside of the announcers talking about the paint scheme on the #49 car, the only time you'll see the car is when it's being lapped or in an accident.

Oh, and FYI, many NASCAR fans are not your typical redneck low-IQ people. Saying NASCAR fans are only rednecks is almost as bad as saying the only Basketball fans are black.

Entertainment based on theglorification and overconsumption of gasoline seems out of step with the message he should be trying to promote, unless he is sponsoring an electric car.

Snooty!

I'm not a fan of NASCAR, by any stretch, but this attack on NASCAR fans is wholly uncalled for, and downright immature.

John and Angie, how good of you to take the time to remind all of us how socially and intellectually superior you are to the rest of the country.

I'm not sure who makes me more ill, Obama, or his (and I'll say it) elitist supporters who decry "prejudice" but are more than happy to prejudge several millions of people based simply on a sport they enjoy.

Oh, how nice it must be to dance amongst the raindrops of hypocrisy and not get wet.

There is a lawsuit from a former black woman who was harassed during her time of employment with NASCAR. Why do these fans continue to sit in the pews....bleachers? They should walk out and follow a different sport, just like John McCain would've walked out from Jeremiah Wrights racist sermon.

This is just more innovation and smarts from the Obama camp. Old man McCain still doesn't even know how to use a computer....

More proof positive that Obama will do anything for a vote. Real change here - about 2 pennies worth!

Hell at least we now know what car will come in last!

Nothing says sensitivity to oil prices and scarcity like sponsoring an activity that outrightly wastes petroleum at a rapid clip for 3 to 4 hours at a shot.

Then again, it is similar to the sensitivity to corporate corruption that manifests itself in privately financed (donation) general election campaigns rather than accepting public funds and limited campaign budgets.

Feed the monsters. We will all end up as worm food anyway. Just a matter of how quickly we get there.

First, this is as others have noted NO WAY to spend those campaign dollars, and worst, BAM is a No-Hope team that would do nothing to embellish the Senator's reception with those people. Give it a pass, please folks.

Naturally, Obama's sponsoring a TOYOTA, rather than an American car.
Wonder how the Detroit autoworkers feel about Obama promoting foreign cars? Maybe some journalist should ask them that question?

Stop trying to pander us Nascar fans,Hussein Obama. Your not gonna get very many votes from us. None I hope. Is Michelle gonna wear Daisy Dukes when you show up at a track?Usually 43 cars race. Are you gonna buy 43 different hats for your family to change all day to flip flop like you do? Maybe sport a rebel flag? Good Grief.Take a look at you pathetic life.

In response to John E...The voting bloc which you refer to as the "low redneck IQ vote" may not be as ignorant nor conservative as you think. Especially in my home state of NC, quite a few people who even self designate as "redneck" (albeit not "low IQ") seem to be leaning toward Obama. The NASCAR advertising idea is yet another way (along with gun rights) to reach out to these (unfairly stereotyped) people who are too often alienated from the Democratic party. Bravo, Barack!

This might not be a good year for candidates to take sides in a race.

Remember how Hillary encouraged Kentucky Derby fans to "...bet on the filly."

Eight Belles finished second, but she was a no show at the post race party.

I am a computer technician from NJ, not a "redneck". I travel to Daytona and Talledega Alabama for my 10th time.

I have seen football fans (Jets vs Giants) turn over vehicles, etc.

Thata never happens at a NASCAR race. It is a family sport. Further, I've NEVER seen anyone harrassed because of race or even who they are fans of.

Some of you need to accept REALITY and bypass the rhetorical BS fed you for years.

S.

Don't we have enough concerns without this. The country on the verge of uncertain outcomes in the next year and this is all you morons can come up with!!!!!. You all need to go back to your fricking reality shows, and leave the great american sport out of this.

signed Richard Petty for President

next, a commercial for Viagra or Head-On--- pandering to the old guys and gals with headaches!

David Letterman also loves auto racing. If Barack ever gos on David Letterman maybe both of you can discuss Auto Racing? Let him know! After all there is more to life then Politics! My Big Sis also loves NASCAR too but will only drive 50 miles per hour on the highway! Its safer that way she says.

My Most Favorite Driver is Jacques Villeneuve who just missed the Triple Crown of auto racing.

Jacques is also a great singer and I have him right next to John Mellencamp on my web site! Yes Jaques is also a great artist like John Mellencamp. Jacques is also one of the influences for my own music.

Anther fan afilmby combined a great video with highlights of Jacque's racing career and with "Accepterais Tu"

Jacques Villeneuve - "Accepterais Tu" translation is Soulmates - Youtube Music Video.

Willie T Ribbs is back in business!

I hope that "Monster Trucks" are soon to follow. Maybe he can get a slot in the new "Grand Theft Auto" when it comes out.

That would be way cool.
