by Mark Silva and updated with Obama's second-thoughts.
As one might expect, Sen. Barack Obama has been highly protective of his young daughters, shielding the children from the glare of media coverage of the presidential campaign under way. So he carefully chose the venue for their national TV debut:
Access Hollywood -- a platform more familiar to those following the divorce of Christie Brinkley or tribulations of Lindsay Lohan than those watching politics closely.
Yet when all was said and done, Obama said today, they got somewhat "carried away'' with this family taping -- and they probably "won't be doing it again.''
"The first interview with the entire Obama family,'' as it was promoted by NBC's Meredith Vieira on the Today Show and broadcast on the syndicated Access, went off without a hitch and Obama's daughters took center stage.
"Nobody expected them to open up so much,'' says interviewer Maria Menounos, herself a star of shampoo commercials. "The girls took over this whole interview.''
It was mainly such fare as daddy's shopping habits that dominated this family interview with wife Michelle and children Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 -- which is probably just the way that dad preferred it.
Yet, when the Today Show's Matt Lauer today asked Obama on Capitol Hill if he is 'trying to have it both ways'' by shielding the girls in most places and letting them speak out on Access, the senator conceded this: "I think that we got carried away in the moment.... We wouldn't do it again, and we wont be doing it again.''
Think of the saga as the modern-day Father Knows Best.

Obama thinks it's "embarassing, yo" that more Americans don't make their kids learn spanish. Check out his speech to a sycophant audience of John Es: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/07/09/obama-your-kids-should-learn-spanish/
The kicker, when asked if he, himself, spoke Spanish after the event Obama replied "no." Do as the messiah says, not as he does! I post this here becausee the swamp will never make a full post about it.

It will be great to have children in our White House, again, with the election of Senator Obama to our Presidency. Children bring beauty and love and playfulness to an otherwise, staid, subdued and remote atmosphere of the political/governmental realm. It will be a moment of historic proportions, when Mr. and Mrs. Barack Obama and Family, reside in America's White House. It will be a proud day for me and for most of America and it will be a happy day, with the children there, too!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I want to see John McCain's family interviewed. I want to see a sgement on what Cindy gets for the $500,000 a month she charges to her credit cards. I want to hear her children tell us how hard i\t is to get by on their trust funds, and the tens of thousands in credit card debt a month their parents pay off. Maybae they can tape the interview on the McCain's private jet.
They're just normal people. Normal for elitist, out of touch people that is.

Yes, he wants it both ways - if you do not want them in the media, keep them off the air and in the back ground.
BTW I am looking forward to the interview with the white side of your family. Oh, what's that - they're still unavailable for comment?
Posted by: Michael Lawrence | July 9, 2008 10:22 AM
He's even flip flopping on this. First he puts his daughters on a trashy hollywood gossip show so the whole world can see his family. Then he plays the "good daddy" role and says he won't do it again. Give me a break.

Posted by: plutosdad | July 9, 2008 10:41 AM
Great comment Jeff, because obviously his children are of military age. Also why not direct your comment at our current President? Whose daughters are of military age and are not serving in a war he started!
Posted by: Ben | July 9, 2008 10:44 AM
Get over yourself Jeff.
Clearly you have an anti Obama slant on things.
These are kids who are 8 and 10 respectively. They should not be compared to McCain's sons who are young adults.
While I appreciate Senator McCain's sons desire to join the military. It is a voluntary action.
I find your comparison unfair and really unnecessary.
Posted by: ann | July 9, 2008 10:47 AM
It looks like Obama's lack of political experience has already caused a big mistake in his campaign. Are we really going to let this man use his "trial and error" methods on our country? If he got "carried away" concerning his very own children, what else might he get "carried away" with?
Posted by: ej | July 9, 2008 10:49 AM
Jeff, I think the children are a wee bit young for military service, don't you?
Given a Bush-redux presidency, though, we'll likely need to reinstate the draft and ship them off very soon. They should be heading home when they're well into their 90's as we draw down our "no timeline" exit from Cheney's Folly.
Posted by: CJB | July 9, 2008 10:51 AM
Father of the year Obama wants to protect his kids from the media but has no problem putting them in the pews of Uncle Jeremiah's hateful, racist, anti-American church for the last decade. As usual, Obama's judgment is seriously flawed.

The Obamas seem to be just a bunch of publicity hounds. Having a 10 year old birthday on TV? Give me a break. Doesn't Obama have something else more important to do? Like addressing high gas price, Iraq etc? I can imagine if Obama gets elected, it will be the Obama show, all Obama, all the times. Geez.
Posted by: Ryan | July 9, 2008 10:53 AM
Yes, why are these prepubescent girls talking to the press instead of fighting on the front lines? Besides not being old enough, perhaps it's because women are prohibited from fighting in combat. I'm sure you were making a point about gender equality (and perhaps even ageism), right, Jeff?
Posted by: Jamie | July 9, 2008 10:54 AM
Don, it will be even better when we have servicemen such as Jack McCain living in the White House when they're not serving our country in active duty.
Posted by: Jeff | July 9, 2008 10:55 AM
Jeff do you propose that Obama's children should be serving this country in the military? I'm not sure how they can enlist, seeing as they are in grade school. Last time I checked this is America, not Sparta - and we were a country based on freedom, leadership and possibility - not creating a never ending war machine.
Posted by: Children in the armed forces? | July 9, 2008 10:59 AM
Well, Obama has no reason to do it again. The interview served its purpose, which was to depict a wholesome/normal family, and to show Michelle, especially, in a softer, more positive role. I find it very hard to believe he DIDN'T know that the interview would be picked up and broadcast all over the place; I think he was probably hoping it would be. The girls are adorable, though. On the other side, I commend McCain for not dragging his children in front of the camera for political reasons. I didn't know he had a son in Iraq until recently, and I doubt most Americans even know.

"LAUER: …some people said wait a minute, the senator is trying to have it both ways. On the one hand, you want to protect your private life. On the other hand, here you are sitting with your two daughters and allowing them to answer questions. Did you make the right call on that?
OBAMA: Uh, you know, I think that we, uh, got carried away in the moment. We were having a birthday party and everybody was laughing, and suddenly this thing cropped up. And, uh, I didn’t catch it quickly enough. And I was surprised by the attention it received as well.
LAUER: Senator, if you had to do it over again?
OBAMA: Yah, I won’t be doing it again and we won’t be doing it again."
A four-part interview that must have neccessitated hours of set-up, makeup, mic checks, and post-wrap schmoozing…that "suddenly cropped up" to "surprise" him and he “didn’t catch it quickly enough.”
Cue in the horse-laughs.

Your right, Jeff. Obama's daughters should be sent to Iraq right now.
As for your second post, Obama understands the changes of society. It was not necessary to learn Spanish when he went to school (or even when I was in school about a decade later). But there will continue to be a growing number of Spanish speaking citizens in the future. He wants his children to gain a leg up on the bi-lingual society that we are trending towards. he should be applauded for that.
Gee, a president who actually thinks forward instead of backwards. What a concept.
Posted by: syj | July 9, 2008 11:11 AM
Why is that a big deal. He stated he thought parents should make their kids learn Spanish. Obviously his parents didn't. He's talking about now, not then. Of course he could learn it on his own, but really it's much easier for kids than adults. I won't hold this against him.
From Jeff:
"Obama thinks it's "embarassing, yo" that more Americans don't make their kids learn spanish. Check out his speech to a sycophant audience of John Es: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/07/09/obama-your-kids-should-learn-spanish/

obama's campaign is a propaganda machine... in this case they employ the 'Plain Folks Device'. The propagandist uses this device to win our confidence by appearing, or seeming to appear, as plain, ordinary people like us. obama will say, or do, anything to get elected - just like every other politician...
Posted by: curtis | July 9, 2008 11:18 AM

If you asked me if I spoke Spanish, I would have to say no. If asked should people learn a second language, I would say yes. Its advantageous (sp) to know more than one language. Only in America are there people that can only speak one language. Every other place in the world, people of other countries know two or more languages.
Sometimes some of you bloggers go to the extreme with your criticism.

The difference, you sheep, is that McCain says he doesn't want his kids in the spotlight and never even mentions their military service on the campaign trail.
Obama, meanwhile, wants it both ways. He goes on a trashy, softball show and gets interviewed about them by Maria Menounos and then claims they're off limits. The man wants it both ways.
McCain seriously wants his kids to be able to have normal lives and be affected as little as possible by this campaign. Obama clearly wants to use his children for publicity and then say "oh, we won't do that again" after the fact.
Posted by: Jeff | July 9, 2008 11:43 AM
The difference, you sheep, is that McCain refuses to use his sons' service - or anything about them - for political gain. After seeing this display on a trashy Hollywood gossip show it's very clear that Obama is not above using his children for political gain. Oh, but he "won't do it again." Sure, after he's gotten the publicity he wanted. The man is shameless.

- Obama’s excuse for his daughters’ interview.
“It was a bone headed move on my part”
- Obama’s excuse for his questionable real estate transaction with Tony Rezko.
Can America really afford to elect another “bone headed” President that gets “carried away in the moment”??
Isn’t that how we end up in situations we shouldn’t be in?

What is wrong with getting to know a candidate's family. He just wanted it to be in a freindlier setting where his young daughters would feel comfortable. Nothing wrong with that. I don't see anything politically motivated in it. And McCain should talk about his sons, too. Nothing wrong with being proud of them. And I appreciate his boys service to our country.

Big deal about Obama kids on tv! So what? They seemed well-adjusted kids. Big deal about Mrs McCain's credit card bills? She pays 'em, not you.
As for charges of elitism (on both sides): ck out the founding fathers....none of them were 'commoners' !
Can we stick to the issues:
#1) our involvement in MidEastern wars
#2) loss of American jobs & resulting weakening economy
#3) finding alternate fuel
#4) crime & drugs in our inner cities
#5) our education system out of of whack resulting in the dumbing down of our youth
#6) fatherless families contributing to #4 & 5 above
#7) illegal immigrants flooding the US and changing our national identity
#8) terrorists threatening our security
#9) socialized medicine for our (by choice) obese citizens
Anyone else got anything to add, instead of focusing on Obama's kids & McCain's wife's charges?

Obama was naive to think that subjecting his children to this kind of exposure during a presidential campaign, or at any other time for that matter, could be of any benefit to them. I am certainly going to vote for him. However, his position on FISA is very dissappointing, and his use of the word "refine" in relationship to his Iraq withdrawal views, was an unforced error that he should never have made. Hopefully, he learns from his mistakes, but if he votes for the FISA bill with immunity for telecoms still in it, he'll be making another mistake that's going to cause him to loose the respect of more voters than he realizes.

Jeff, is "no comment" something that McCain is incapable of saying?
He sat for that long interview and discussed it at length. If you think that he didn't do it for his own political benefit, it is you who are naive.
I didn't hear him complain when Joe Leiberman brought it up in his defense either. If you believe that Leiberman didn't clear that with McCain it is you who are naive.

Posted by: Suzanne | July 9, 2008 4:06 PM
Don, I understand that you make errant statements, but I was making a comparison. AmEx, he's told many, many reporters he doesn't want to answer questions about his family. When the NY Times told him they'd interviewed Jimmy McCain's entire unit he very reluctantly sat for the interview. Look at the headline of the story if you don't believe me. He did not do it for political benefit, he did it because he knew the Times was running a story whether he answered questions or not and wanted to protect his family. If you think McCain can control what Lieberman or ANY democrat says or does then you're the one who's naive. You probably believe you can train cats to do tricks, too, eh?
The Best Life magazine article you forwarded is one you clearly didn't read yourself because you forgot this part: “When he turned 18, he announced to Cindy and me that he was joining the Marines,” McCain says. “First, I was surprised, and then I was proud, of course.”
But when I try again to bring up Jimmy’s deployment to Iraq, McCain stops. "As you can imagine, we don’t talk about that much.” I’ve been covering McCain since late 1999, I’ve interviewed him on countless occasions and written his biography, and it is the first time he has ever flatly refused to answer a question I have posed to him.
