Green Party delegates selected former Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney of Georgia as the party's presidential nominee on Saturday in wrapping up their convention in Chicago, Ruth Weill, the party's national convention coordinator, said.

McKinney tapped Rosa Clemente, a hip-hop artist, journalist and activist, as her running mate as the party seeks to turn its progressive agenda into automatic ballot status in several states.

A Green Party official, meanwhile, said he misspoke when he told the Chicago Tribune for a story Friday that the Greens had borrowed money from party members to help pay for their Chicago convention. Scott McLarty, the Green Party's spokesman, said the loan had been authorized by top party officials, but no borrowing had taken place.

I guess the Greens will steal some Obama supporters who are unhappy with his turn to the "RIGHT"

I am a freelance photojournalist based in Chicago and was at the Green Party National Convention If you are interested in an image during her acceptance speech you can contact me by email

GOOD FOR YOU, CYNTHIA. YOU GO GIRL.

Wow, the Green's have really thrown in the towel. Cynthia McKinney is a bit of a quack.

Hey Machiavelli?

Who will steal more votes - McKinney from Obama, or Bob Barr from McCain??

Barr is already making Georgia competitive for Barrack, and he has not even started campaigning yet!!!!

Left-right, left-right, left-right, keep-in-step, left-right!

So...who issues the marching orders, eh, Pufinstuf? You claim "Cynthia McKinney is a bit of a quack," right?

I don't mean to be arrogant here, but from everything I know about US politics and McKinney, where does that "quack" stuff come from, if not from concerted media hatchet jobs that get constant repeat play? Can you actually define what makes her a quack job besides "that's what others have said?" How could she possibly be more screwy than W who can't put 2 sentences together, and gets his jollies from early on blowing up frogs, now doing it to imagined enemies or those he creates on the fly. Do you call Cheney a "quack" or "nutjob"? You could, couldn't you? But where's the media drumbeat to get those words coming out all over? At least Cynthia doesn't shoot her friends in the face and then lie about getting drunk afterwards. As far as I know, she didn't tell us we were about to be nuked by Saddam.

So, know of what thou speaks, ok? Look into it, if you have to, before you, too, become an agent of passing along innuendo -- and unfair innuendo at that.

McKinney, by her behavior alone, is probably the most courageous congressperson in our lifetimes. She fearlessly posed tough questions to Mr. "Tough Guy," himself, Donald Rumsfeld. Asked him what the hell he and his friends did with the missing $2.3 trillion (that's right -- with a "t") of defense funds.

Think that might be a tad important for US citizens to know about, hmmm? Well, if so, why did no one else in congress ask around? When "quacky" McKinney asked in a public hearing if the War Games going on during September 11th negatively affected our response to the attacks, did they laugh and call her crazy? No, didn't. They replied that they (the war games) hadn't impaired our responses at all. That was the first time those "games" had been mentioned or acknowledged in public!

If that is quacky or whacky, bring on some more! We need dozens like that!

This wonderful, brave woman is attacked for being a woman, being black and asking inconvenient questions about what really goes on behind the blue curtain n DC and other centers of power, so she is vilified by those in power and an easy target for corporate media hits on her credibility.

I'd put her credibility up ANY DAY against, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Tom Delay, Nanci Pelosi, Joe Lieberman, John McCain, Hillary or Bill Clinton, and so on... THAT's what counts. Who does she serve? What is her vision? What are her suggestions for solution for America's myriad problems? Who pays for her words???

THOSE are the questions to ask, my friend, before you go around, flippantly dismissing someone you obviously don't even know. Don't perpetuate the lockstep character assassination squads of the NeoCons and their Democratic Enablers. They are only interested in maintaining power and making all the decisions themselves with their cronies to satisfy their narrow vision of life (and death) here and abroad.

If they don't own it they want it to disappear. That includes you and me, if needs be.

When someone like Cynthia comes along, out of the mainstream (and you'd have to be to have clear vision today), we should open up our minds and ears. She's ready to take on anything to get some truth, justice, rule of law and dignity going again in America.

If nothing else just ask yourself what questions are really fundamental to our constitutional way of life, who is asking them, and who is demanding answers. THAT's your answer right there. 90% of this Congress is worthless, sold out. And you're worried if she is "a bit of a quack?"

Being wary can be a good thing. But be wary of those who conform, have perfect hair and perfect styles and smiles, but don't ask any important questions, and don't listen to or serve their voters.

Tell you what, Pufinstuf. Look at her acceptance speech. Look at her actual voting record in Congress, and the bills she sponsored. Look at her platform. Then look into your heart and figure out what's right to do and to believe.

McKinney spelled backwards is wack job.

Paul, you observed:

"McKinney spelled backwards..."

You probably split your gut laughing about how clever your one-liner on McKinney is.

It's that kind of smug attitude that has ruined this country, the lives and industry of most of its people and reduced our moral standing in the world. Proud?

really? Then I, a registered green, quit.
First of all with our limited funds, the Greens should be focused on winning local elections that can show people that the Greens are serious. All a presidential bid at this time will do is waste energy and money. And piss possible converts off. Seriously- does anyone even think about this stuff. The point is to get folks to take us seriously , not freak out at the mention of "Green Party". We can say it's their problem all day long, but that still doesn't get their support. Just when the specter of Nader (and I don't agree he was a spoiler at all) is starting wear off we proudly offer a woman who has almost as much baggage in the public eye as Hillary. It's really a shame, and to me it's the achilles heel of the party. If we're trying to change business as usual, let's set our part ego aside and focus where we can do good. Running a campaign supporting a (and I WILL say it as I've seen her talk) publicly perceived wacked candidate does us no good. Heck, maybe I saw her at some really bad events or he was tired, but the fact that she already has the kook factor does the party harm.
I've always suspected the Green party is more about "fighting the fight" than winning. My local is a looney bin of malcontents and people who routinely call each other "comrade". Personally I do not care (well- at this point I suppose I do) - but I cant very well try to get people to look at the serious issues surrounding our country and the election process when they have objections to an American flag on flyers promoting Green events! Aren't we still operating in the United States? Anyway- I've put up with it because I pretty well think the 10 key values are as close as a party will get to my beliefs. But I believe the 11th key value is to hamstring ourselves instead of representing the party in a way that might grow and eventually bring forward some truly electable people. And people that have PROVEN themselves as Greens in local and state government. Now I have to go to that "other" party...the independent. Which is not really a party at all. But I can't stand the idea of affiliating with a party who seems just as clueless when it comes to presidential elections as the other parties. I'm just one person, but I also have a pretty long fuse, and a reasonable manner. Imagine the other people that might give up at this point. Barak looks good if you squint;)
Good luck to the Greens when all that remain are people who are really not looking to ever win - because then they'd have to object to themselves.

Steve P quote:
"really? Then I, a registered green, quit. "

I couldn't agree with you more. The Nader/McKinney runs are more about self-aggrandizement and a buddah cipher of liberal cause-celebs than actually changing anything. Its almost a favor that McKinney isn't invited to the debates......she'd look just as off the wall crazy as Mike Gravel.

I just read Alan K's comment of 14 july 0134. I am n agreement wth his sentiments & am much imprest by his impassioned, cogent defense of th courageous behaviour displayd by Cynthia McKinney. He is correct n asserting that we need a countryful of people wth th same backbone. I invite Alan to contact me personally @ sunyata@chartertn.net. Thanx, "U. Z."
