Jesse Jackson apparently was caught on tape using the n-word, the racial epithet he has railed against for years, adding an ironic new twist to the controversy over his recent remarks about Barack Obama during an off-air break in a televised interview.
A chagrined Jackson issued a renewed apology to the Democratic presidential candidate late Wednesday while traveling overseas, without specifically acknowledging he used the racial slur while he waited to speak on a recent Fox News program.
Advisers to Jackson declined to confirm that he used the word, but Fox host Bill O'Reilly said in an evening interview that Jackson did. O'Reilly said that when he broke the original story several days ago, he had withheld the incendiary comment because he didn't want to create that sort of controversy.
Fox has not aired the clip containing the slur nor released a transcript containing it, though someone with access -- a "weasel," by O'Reilly's description -- leaked the information.
Friends and family say Jackson is deeply pained by the controversy, which began this month after he whispered to a fellow guest on "Fox & Friends" during a break that Obama was "talking down to black people."
In the interview Wednesday evening, O'Reilly said that when Jackson used the offensive word, he was not referring to Obama. And, O'Reilly said, "I'm not in the business of hurting Jesse Jackson."
"He is personally and professionally devastated," U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) said late Wednesday of his father. Without acknowledging any specific remarks beyond those aired on Fox over the past week, the younger Jackson said he hopes people can "find room in their hearts to forgive him and move on."
Obama accepted Jackson's apology last week. Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said Wednesday that the senator had no additional comment.
Read more about Jesse Jackson's comments in today's Chicago Tribune.
Campaigned against slur
The latest development is all the more controversial given Jackson's history, not just as a civil rights leader but as a minister and crusader against use of that word in particular. Devoted to the idea that language can transform the way people think, Jackson has repeatedly urged the entertainment industry to stop using the word. He even urged a boycott of sales of "Seinfeld" DVDs after actor Michael Richards used the word in a stand-up routine.
Jackson apologized for saying that Obama was talking down to black people, using a vulgarity directed at Obama, after the comments aired last week, and his son went a step further with a statement that verged on outrage.
Then, as news of the additional comments began to surface Wednesday, Jackson issued a new statement.
"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words," he said in a statement issued while he was in Madrid. "I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public. There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me.
"I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."
'Unfortunate moment'
An aide to Jackson neither acknowledged nor denied use of the racial slur, saying only that Jackson decided to issue a new statement because of the level of controversy.
"He just felt he needed to apologize again," said spokeswoman Althea Conyers.
But the younger Jackson said his father feels terrible about the episode and is speaking a heartfelt apology.
"I hope that this unfortunate moment and lapse in judgment will be balanced against an extraordinary career," the congressman said. "More importantly, at this hour, I hope the American people and the people who have been enlightened and who have benefited from his service can find room in their hearts to forgive him and move on."

Sad? Maybe, but guess who will be up on the inauguration platform next to Obama when the cameras start rolling. He always is.

It's interesting that when Don Imus used a racial slur, he received incredible pressure and lost his job. When Reverend Jackson does the same, we're asked to "forgive him and move on".

My question is who really cares about Jesse Jackson ? He stopped being relavant as far as most blacks are concerned with the admission of his love child and mistress.
Only the lazy white media, looking for a "spokesperson" for all things black, continues to seek him out.
I am glad that with Obama's ascent, Jesse will be pushed further into the background.
Posted by: DM | July 17, 2008 8:23 AM
What exactly is Jesse Jackson's "profession" that has been devastated? His "career" has been that of professional ajitator and whiner. When people like this have their real thoughts and words exposed, they suddenly become horrified at their own hypocrisy. Time to retire from his "career!"
Posted by: Christy | July 17, 2008 8:26 AM
Jackson is a hypocrite and a disgrace to the ministry, his family and friends, and the black community. I hope he has enough sense to retire and keep his mouth shut from hereon.

Funny how Al (stick my head everywhere) Sharpton isn't ALL OVER this !!! Double standard?
Posted by: Jason | July 17, 2008 8:29 AM
during Mr Jackson's ill-fated presidential campaigns of the 1980s, "Run, Jesse, Run" bumper stickers were widely distributed.
Many were placed on front bumpers. It may be equally appropriate now.
Posted by: DanS | July 17, 2008 8:33 AM
Overall, I like Jesse. He has been a great ambassador for civil rights and justice. And I think he really cares about the causes he persues. (Unlike Sharpton who is just an opportunist.)
But lately, Jesse appears to be having difficulty with the fact that a torch has been passed, and he is no longer front and center. And his recent comments show bitterness. He needs to be honored and thanked for his past service and then quietly fade away.
Posted by: David J | July 17, 2008 8:34 AM
Jackson is a do as I say not as I do guy. A complete fraud. He took Michael Richards to task - and Imus - and now he wants the American public to "put it behind and go on". Why should he even think he should be absolved when he went for the jugular with these two men. This is something that is acceptable for black men who only need to make a public apology and it is all over but white men who did LESS must lose their jobs and get black balled?
Yes we have double standards here.

The causal manner in which Jesse Jackson used the N-word tells me that this was not a one-time slip of the tongue. Most people are aware that many black people use the same language within their personal contexts all the time, but while Rev. Jackson may think he is language-exempt becasuse he is black, the rest of us sense the hypocrisy, which sadly diminishes his work and the work of so many others.

I'm shocked the Loons from the Left aren't saying this is all the result of some conspiracy by Fox News?!?! Jesse Jackson is and always has been a hypocrite, a farce, a racist, profiting off spreading racism.

Poor Jeese Jr. he makes over $100,000 with the great pension etc. and so does his wife as an alderman, now that deeply hurts me.They don't even live in Chicago and their kids go to school in Washington D.C. a statement by her on channel's Chicago Tonight Program.

This does ot surprise me at all. Jackson has been two faced his whole life. He speaks out against racism, yet depends on it for his existence. Without racism, he is a simple minister. HE doesn't travel the world, he preaches on Sunday. MAybe he'll dig himself a big enough whole, and just disappear.

I like how the media turns on anyone that dares to question Obama. At its core, what was wrong with what Jackson said about Obama (other than the cutting the nuts off thing)? He basically said what many are saying, including the article in the New Yorker - Obama will say anything, do anything and throw anyone he needs to under the bus to get a vote.

"a "weasel," by O'Reilly's description"
And who should know better than O'Reilly?
On the topic, though, Jackson's become a sad self-parody. Like something on "South Park," only worse.

For some reason, a number of people don't see the difference between Jesse Jackson using the N-word and a person like Don Imus using the N-word.
Is it really a double standard? No. It isn't an issue of two people saying the same bad word, but an issue of the intention behind the person, with a certain caveat. If you happen to be white, there is a presumption, a fair one, that you are using it in bad faith in a way that evokes slavery or discrimination from the view of the discriminator. Four hundred years of history support that presumption. That makes it a fair presumption. Therefore, the only person who is black that can be held to the same standards as a Don Imus, is fictitious character Uncle Tom, or maybe Clarence Thomas, but even that is highly debatable. Justice Thomas is too intelligent, however, to reduce himself to using that language.
I doubt, however, that people are actually having difficulty grasping this concept, and are just looking for another reason to dump on Jesse Jackson. Criticize him if you can seriously name something he's done wrong that is worthy of criticism. If you can't, hold off on your judgment.
Posted by: jimmy | July 17, 2008 9:33 AM
This is absolutely ridiculous. If Jesse Jackson was white, he would have been attacked for this....why is it okay for him to speak like that?
Posted by: Mary | July 17, 2008 9:34 AM
I guess Jackson will be going on Don Imus' radio show to grovel, right? Then, of course, PUSH will fire him. And re-hire him eight months later at a reduced salary.

Jesse Jackson is no better than Rev. Al or any of the other activist Icons. When it serves their purpose they are up there in front of the camera touting the next political candidate or racial issues that face america. But as soon as the lights and cameras go off - they become racist biggots looking to cash in on the next candidate or issue that brings them public acclaim. Evidence of this is - this is not Jesse's first slip up. He is what he is and no camera or public appology is gonna change the stripes on a Zebra.

Al Sharpton, why isn't he all over this? Maybe because the last time he got involved in a case that was based only on allegations he was hugely embarassed. Once the furor over the n-word dies down, will there be yet ANOTHER snippet from the Jackson interview? How can Fox even be considered a news outlet? They are just an appendage of the Republican Party.

No one cares what Jessie says. Because he is not relevant and a hypocrite.
He should stick to Rainbow Push Initiatives and keep his mouth closed or step down.
Posted by: Ange | July 17, 2008 10:45 AM
I understand the difference between whites and blacks using the N word. Blacks use it as a source of empowerment and whites typically use it as a racial insult. Sadly, any use of this ugly word leaves an imprint on a new generation who have never really witnessed civil rights struggles from decades past. Usage appears to be acceptable to white and black children who hear it freely used in rap lyrics...and now the Rev Jesse Jackson.
Jesse Jackson has become irrelevant. Not only has he become an embarrassment to the civil rights movement by continuing to live in a 60's mindset, he is an absolute disgrace to the Christian faith he represents. He will no doubt continue to make controversial statement both on and off the record. One can only hope he will eventually disappear from all media. In the meantime, ignore him.
Posted by: Jeff | July 17, 2008 10:46 AM
Everyone is asking what does Jackson do? Very obvious that he just lives his life to be a racist and to find reasons to criticize whites. Do we really need to list examples of his past actions? Don't think so, maybe now blacks, if they have any smarts at all, will see what a hippocrit he is and get rid of him at PUSH. Works both ways, Jackson always goes for the throat when whites screw up and do some stupid thing so it is all right to go after him.
Posted by: quills | July 17, 2008 10:54 AM
This is only news to those P.C. folks who are ignorant enough to believe that we can or should ban certain words. A grain of news can be found in his hypocrisy, which goes to prove the lesson that its not the word, but the context and intent that matters. What was he talking about? Isn't that more important than one word taken out of context? Every race has its n*s (I censored myself!), the only thing wrong with these slurs is when it's used to paint an entire group with the same brush, AND done with derogatory and serious, as opposed to humorous, intent. Thank you, Jesse, now please start spreading the news, this P.C. stuff is just a smokescreen. If you have to attack something, attack racist attitudes, not the dictionary.

Hypocrisy is a real issue! We are all sick of the hypocrisy from politicians everywhere and the diviseness when the "N" word is used. It is used frequently by blacks to blacks, in RAP, movies, comedians and black clubs and God help anyone not black who might use it?
My Father forbid us to ever use that word so it is not in our vocabulary. Yet we grew up with blacks using it constantlyagainst one another.
Hypocrisy!!!

What has Jackson ever done for the black community??
Besides pandering to them by blaming all their problems on the white establishment, he has not really done much to help them.
When other prominent black people such as Obama/Cosby urging personal responsibility, he wants to cut their nuts off. This type of talk goes against his "It's the white folks fault" mentality.
I guess Jesse does not like competition for the spotlight.

It amazes me to think that this imposter who calls himself a reverend could even think of saying such a thing especially after he crusaded so hard to have Imus fired for saying something that did not even have the same mean spirit in it. He is nothing but a two bit two faced phony. The Bible says "out of the mouth speaketh the heart". I have always known it but now America knows it too. Your heart is in the gutters of filth and deceit. Oh and do us real Christians a favor and drop the phony reverend off the title of your name. You are as far as a reverend can get. While I agree that there are more important issues than this in our country, this is one is important.
These false prophets of the African American culture have built careers on stirring the pot of race relations. At one point in our history, it was necessary. While much remains to be done to continue the improvements, the shenangans of icons like Jackson and Sharpton have been counterproductive and have done more to hurt than to help. The policy of "zero-tolerance" against Michael Richards, Don Imus and many others is not helpful. It's ironic that Jesse now asks, "I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."
It's the best thing he's ever said. I hope he, Al Sharpton, and the other hate-mongers can live by that.
This issue is important because I hope it finally brings to light and exposes the frauds that these men have become, despite what they may have been at the start of their careers.

Unfortunately for those interested parties he claims to have championing all these years, the black population of this country, he's just as bad as the narcotics cop that steals and sells the drugs he has sworn to remove from from the street. Just as the bad cops threaten the trials and convictions, future and past, of those they and others worked so tirelessly to take off the streets, Rev. JJ "The Commentator" undermines and threatens the very things many others including he have worked so many years to stamp out, the pervasive racist undertone that still, obviously, permeates the day to day thinking of, not only whites, but of a black man who finds himself frustrated at the loss of the national podium he has so long cherished as his own, to a mere upstart.
He should walk away before he chokes on his foot.

Jesus Jimmy - you claim there is no double standard?
"No. It isn't an issue of two people saying the same bad word, but an issue of the intention behind the person, with a certain caveat. If you happen to be white, there is a presumption, a fair one, that you are using it in bad faith in a way that evokes slavery or discrimination from the view of the discriminator."
Are you trying to write Obama speeches? Black's can use the word "n" all they want in the same bad faith way a white uses the same word but that's OK. These ignorant excuses for tossing around racist words - no matter who uses them - is not complicated and it is a double standard that continues to divide rather than unite. You do sound like Obama the divider!

If Imus' career is devastated by such words than why shouldn't Jesse's. We cannot tolerate from one and not the other. Peace knows no color, gender, or faith.

Jesse's been chasing money-for-Jesse too long. It's about time that the Black Community recognize Jesse for what he has ALWAYS been: devisive.
To call Jesse "Reverend" is an afront to all Christians regardless of race. Such title is earned and his use of such is akin to addressing the Pope as 'Ayatollah'.
It's about time 'ol Jesse exists the public stage that was given only because of his outspoken bigotry. May this "international trip" be extended indefinitely.

Everyone should know that each of these "Black Saviors" who appear on the scene throughout history have been hypocrites, opportunists, con men, and the list goes on. The only difference between them and Obama is that Obama has managed to put a different spin on the old game. Obama has managed to con everybody, not just Blacks. As a Black woman who has watched this go on for generations, I refuse to listen to any of their "stuff".
It may be a double standard that Blacks can use the "N" word, and it means something totally different than when Whites use it. That is the reality. There are many other double standards in this country that are accepted on a daily basis here in the land of the free.
In fact some Whites who have adopted to Black culture and lifestyle are called "Wiggas". They refer to themselves as this term, and Blacks refer to them in this way. It is used as a term of endearment. So now we have the "W" word. Uh-oh! More double standards!
I wish there was not so much emphasis on what people say, and more on what they do. In my opinion, John Imus has done much more to help others than Jesse Jackson. With all of his millions, has Jesse established a ranch to help sick children?
Posted by: Susan | July 17, 2008 1:21 PM
Hey, why all the fuss?
"Reverand" Jesse Jackson, does what everyone does. That is, he sometimes forgets where he came from, the changes he helped make for his people. He reverts to his childhood, becomes jealous of someone better than him, and because he cannot do anything about it, he pouts and struts and swears, just like a toddler.
Unfortunately, the difference between the "Honorable Rev. Jesse," and the rest of us, is that we did not use race as the means to profit personally for himself, and his family....do I sense another liquor distribution franchise, perhaps from Imbev, this Bud's for Jesse & Co.
All one has is his name, and when you make believe you are bigger than the events that affect you, your name, your family's name becomes tarnished. Shame on you Jesse!!!

When Imus said Nappy Headed Hoes....Shapton was all over that story, and, as usual, protesting, where is he on this story?
Posted by: Phil | July 17, 2008 9:40 AM
What an appropriate question, I could not have phrased it better. I do not have a problem with Imus being fired, but it truely showed that there are many racist's that are not white.
Let me add this. Why do I not see sharpton outside most rap concernts? Puff whatever and the rest use the "n" word, ho and every other belittling term more times in one song that Imus has his entire career. I have yet to see one, let me repeat ONE protest held outside a rap concernt. I guess if you are black, it ok to make blantantly racist coments. If I call someone and/or use the word in NAY CONTEXT, I am a racist bent on debasing and denying blacks their rights. Yet jessie says it, or the hundreds of times you hear one black call another a n*@%&r, it is socially acceptable. If the word is wrong, it is wrong, period.
I would love to hear sharpton or jessie's response to this question!!!

Don Imus did not us e the N word
**********************
**********************

Another double standard for black an white. In the end the facts have a way of telling us what kind of a person they really are. Goodbye to the Jacksons others of his class which covers a lot of so called leaders. Not sure what they lead?
Posted by: jim | July 17, 2008 1:33 PM
Hey Robert Musial, I don't think anyone suggests that we ignore and move on. I think his comments are most offensive, especially when he calls himself a minister. He's been around long enough to know better and why is that a part of his vocabulary anyway.
Most people think he's tired and he needs to go low key. If he doesn't, I believe he'll just be looked upon as a joke. He's barely taken seriously now.
Too bad, though, because the people he claims to champion need all the constructive (and I underline constructive) help they can get.

So what, can you not call a person from New York a "Newyorker". Why fuss about "N" word?
Oh, but I forgot he was the originator. He has to obey laws created by him or "SHUT UP" forever. Was he not supporting Bill Clinton in his bad times (Monica) though he himself had bad time than.

Yes, time to retire. No one has the right to use that word, black or white period. Can anyone tell me who he is a Reverend too? Does he run a church? That title seems to be loosely handed out.
How does this guy make his money? That would be an interesting story I would like to read in the paper.
Posted by: EOB | July 17, 2008 1:42 PM
How dumb does JJ have to be? First you're on Fox news with Bill O'Reilly... WHY???? Do you really think his audience wants to hear what you have to say Jesse??? Then you say something off camera, like they're really off! This guy is one Chicago's biggest downfalls.
Posted by: Bones | July 17, 2008 1:51 PM
"Okay...why isn't anyone bringing up the fact that Fox News is teasing this out and milking the story? After the first stuff came out, Bill O'Reilly said there were even more, juicier comments from Jackson. "
Thank you so much, Beth. That was going to be my first point.
But it is not even as simplistic and benign as that.
Fox, by releasing a transcript and not a clip, can piously claim to be sparing the public the horror, but is actually hiding the fact of the placement of the word, used in :::illustrating::: the behavior he was criticizing, namely that a black man is chastising blacks in order to pander to whites. Obama has gone Cosby one better by doing it in a church, where his pandering is less likely to be shouted down and called out for what it is.
Jesse was illustrating what Obama was really doing by 'putting people in their place'. In other words, he was putting a verbal quote on the INTENTION of Obama. Get it? As young people often do - "He was all 'I'm better than you, I can tell you what to do' ". Understand? He was putting Obama's intention in quotes. But the public will never know that now because the tape has been spliced and mangled so you cannot see Jackson's delivery.
And the media and the rest of the Obamaniacs just lap it up.
Keep on drinking that Kool-Aid, folks.
Hope it sustains you when China buys up and owns the banks, the FDA and the auto industry and you're all living in boxes on Lower Wacker Drive, which is where we are headed with the Empty Suit taking the reins of this ruined economy. If you don't realize by now that Barack hasn't a clue what to do except tell people he's better than them, you deserve this clown.

I think an important message that just doesn't seem to get through to people is that words can cause pain. It doesn't matter who is using the offensive word - whether it is someone from the community referenced or not. As a gay man, I hear other gay people call one another fag (f word?) or queer (q word?) and I bristle. They say that by using these words they are taking the power away from bigots. They take no account of the pain those words caused and still cause people from my generation when we were younger. There are only two ways to take power away from derogatory words. Either everyone stop accepting that they are ever ok to use OR use the George Carlin rule and everyone repeat the word 100 times until it just sounds silly. Don't think that will work? Stop right now and say sh** 100 times. Sounds stupid now doesn't it?

The Democrats are willing to throw anyone under the bus these days. First Obama throws his Grandmother. Then the Dems throw Hillary and Bill. Now the Dems are throwing Jessie.
Eight years ago, the Democrats ran Jessie to Florida to stir up racial issues that were not true. Three years ago, the Dems were hailing Hillary as the next Savior of the party. Everyone though Hill and Bill would put the Dems back in power.
Now the Dems hate Hillary, Loath Bill and want Jessie to fade into the dark. There is nothing the corrupt Dem party won't do to get into the White House.
After four years of Obamas horrible administration, the American People will run back to the Republicans faster then they did after Jimmy the idiot Carter.
God Bless American. He will be our only chance.

Jesse Jackson was on hand to personally destroy other peoples lives and careers for using similar racial words.
Why should he be forgiven when he made a career of cracking down on such language and ruining people for using those words? Mr. Jackson has clearly been a hypocrite his whole life!

It's official the N word is fair game in this election, but the M word (Muslim) has been censored, prohibited, outlawed and otherwise banned by the 527 Obama media propaganda machine.

Ironic how Jesse is asking for forgiveness for the same type of action he has gotten other people fired for. And the media is playing it down instead of burning up the wires with it, unlike many other cases.
It's been a double standard for a long time, and now it's obvious to the most casual observer - depending on who says what, and who is offended by it (or at least claiming to be), what you say may or may not be an issue.

One real issue here is that Bill O'Reilly decided that the American public was not entitled to have all of the information available. He did not want to "embarrass" Jesse Jackson. He characterizes the person who "leaked" the information as a "weasel." Interestingly the banner on Fox News web site reads "We report. You decide." Apparently not when it comes to the information that Bill O'Reilly disseminates...he decides. This is the real story here. What other news stories do Bill O'Reilly and Fox News hold back or give incomplete information? Please Fox, don't do the thinking for us!

The funniest thing about this thread is watching the last few hardcore GOP nutjobs trying to spin this into an attack on the 'loony libs" and a sign of the impending collapse of the Dems., as if their own party hasn't been imploding around them.
Their self-delusion has led them to near irrelevancy, much like Jackson, which I guess is why they're sympathetic to his plight.
Posted by: Radian | July 17, 2008 9:22 PM
The blacks are always whining about racism and how they are treated but guess who keeps promoting it. Take for example Rev. Wright with his sermons about how the whites treat the poor blacks, etc, etc.. What impression does this make on our young people going to these kind of churches. These sermons just keep the racial issue alive from generation to generation and breeds resentment.
I am white and my church or Minister does not use the "N" word. We do not preach about what the blacks are doing but that each individual is equal.
J Jackson and Obama are a divisive factor for this country. I can just imagine what 'ole' Jackson and Sharpton preach. I am quite sure it is not how nice the whites are.
Jackson is a fraud and always has been.

I've thought for a long time and I still think Jesse's nuts.
Why doesn't he do what he does best and that is to pick some
word and start raisin' hell? How about the word "refugee"?
No, he wore that one out. How about the "N" word? No, he
wore that one out too. How about the word "white"? No, he
wore it out. How about the word "nuts"? He could try it.
Raisin' hell is in his genes. I don't think there's any way
he could wear out his genes, but I've been wrong before. Ask
Jesse. Everything's wrong and nothin' ain't right.

American Whites have been so brow-beaten, shamed, embarrased, made to pay, and outcast for being "racist" over the past 40 years. Hearing Rev Wright and Rev Jackson is like an ostericized cheating husband finding out his wife was cheating all along, too.

Love to know what Imus thought of this one. Hey, even better, love to know what Roland Martin thought of it, he's CNN's PC Police over Imus, and gave an easy pass for Rev Wright's nasty rants.

Jesse is a product of lazy newspaper writers and TV reporters who would rather call Mr. Jackson for a quote and opinion than do investigative work to flesh out a story. There are many leaders in the community and their work was never acknowledeged. The white media wanted a simple go to guy for their news coverage so they could meet deadlines. By playing up Jesse, the white media discounted the diverse voice in the community. Finally, the media is just starting to do it job. Maybe it will help undo the damage it done, too.
