Jackson's apology to Obama: The Swamp

The Swamp

by John McCormick and Monique Garcia

In a moment that framed the generational divide in parts of the African-American community over Sen. Barack Obama's historic presidential bid, Jesse Jackson moved quickly Wednesday to apologize for disparaging remarks he made about his fellow Chicago Democrat.

Not realizing a camera and microphone were live, Jackson whispered in a television studio on Sunday that Obama had been "talking down to black people" in his calls for more parental responsibility among blacks and an expansion of faith-based charities.

"I want to cut his nuts out," Jackson added, gesturing as if grabbing part of the male anatomy and then pulling.

O'ReillyWith Fox News poised to air the video Wednesday evening, the media-savvy Jackson raced to get ahead of his own story, calling reporters and appearing before cameras at his South Side Rainbow/PUSH Coalition headquarters where he called his remarks "hurtful and wrong."

Obama's campaign also rapidly sought to move past the awkward situation and issued a statement within minutes of Jackson ending his news conference.

The rest of the story is linked here from Thursday's Chicago Tribune.

***************

Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly ... thanks for watching us tonight ... Jesse Jackson criticizes Barack Obama.

That is the subject of this evening's talking points memo.

While speaking to Reed Truckson ... from the United Health Care Group ... Reverend Jackson had some negative comments about Senator Obama's recent support for faith-based charities ... operating with government funds.

Here is part of what Jackson said:

Jackson: "See, Barack been, um, talking down to black people on this faith based (pause), I want to cut his nuts (bleep nuts) out."

Jackson: "Barack (pause) he's talking down to black people."

Now, I have no idea why Jackson framed his comments this way. We invited the Reverend on the program this evening and he declined.

Unlike what Jackson himself often does ... talking points is not going to speculate about his motivation or describe his comments in pejorative any way.

You heard them ... you can decide.

Also, it would be unfair to Jackson to pit him against Obama in a larger sense ... now some believe there is a rivalry between the two men ... but we have seen no evidence of that ... other than what you just heard.

I will say that Senator Obama's support for faith-based charities does not seem to have any condescending quality to it ... faith-based organizations do a tremendous amount of good in America ... and we would like to know if Jackson has a beef with them ...we'd also like Jackson to explain his comments about Obama..

But once again ... Jackson would not appear this evening ... late this afternoon he did issue a statement ... in part it says:

"For any harm or hurt that this hot mic private conversation may have caused, I apologize. My support for Senator Obama's campaign is wide, deep and unequivocal. I cherish this redemptive and historical moment." Unquote.

And that's the memo ...

now for the top story tonight ...

reaction to the situation .... and for clarity's sake ... we'll play the tape once again:

Jackson: "See, Barack been, um, talking down to black people on this faith based (pause), I want to cut his nuts (bleep nuts) out."

Jackson: "Barack (pause) he's talking down to black people."

Joining us now from Raleigh, North Carolina ... radio talk show host Warren Ballentine.

And from Washington ... Chicago Tribune columnist ... Clarence Page.

###

(Later in the segment):

O'Reilly:

"I want to tell the audience, and I want to tell you, that we held back some of this conversation, and, we did that because we didn't feel it had any relevance to the conversation this evening.

We are not out to get Jesse Jackson. We are not out to embarrass him and we are not out to make him look bad.

If we were, we would have used what we had, which is more damaging than what you have heard.

What we are trying to get at here, is that there are some people who believe that the victimization here goes to hell if Barack Obama is elected president. The accusation that we live in a racial society, unfair to blacks, all blows up if you get Obama into the White House."

Very Christian of the good reverend...

Are you reporters for the Chicago Tribune or for the National Enquirer? There's obviously not much difference today.

I want to hear the rest of the conversation by Jackson that the network recorded but will not release. Why aren't the Tribune and other media demanding its release by Fox? If these are comments by a top civil rights leader about a presidential candidate, the PUBLIC DESERVES TO KNOW. That's what the media always say when they reveal national secrets.

Jackson shouldn't feel bad. Obama "talks down" to everyone.

Obama was NOT talking down to Black people, any more than Jackson speaks down to white people when he speaks the truth.

I praise Obama for going forward and accpeting the apology.

Like many "group" Jackson gets a little protective when blacks are "questioneed," I hope he understands how his many Jew remarks hurt and why he is not considered a friend to some. His mispeaking is not a one time reaction.

When does Barry go on TV and proclaim "this is not the Jesse Jackson I knew."

I agree that what Jackson said was totally wrong, but I wonder if the media would be all over this if a white person said something like this about McCain.

To believe for a moment that the incredibly media-savvy Jackson doesn't understand the golden rule to assume that "the mic is always hot" is utter and complete nonsense. The Obama campaign has the audacity to believe they are smarter than we are. They are dead wrong.

Obama and Jackson are laughing this morning that their act worked so well. This is simply more diversions designed to attract attention from Obama's hard left, socialist agenda for America including covering 15 million illegal immigrants with federally subsidized health insurance, dramatically driving up costs and forcing federal rationing of healthcare. As in the U.K. and Canada, you will not be permitted certain medical procedures if the bureaucrats decide you are not worth it. Obama will legislate a 60 percent tax bracket for upper-income Americans, killing all initiative and innovation. He will raise the top bracket to 40 percent. He will apply FICA taxes to all income, not just that under $100,000 as at present. So add 40 percent plus FICA’s 12.5 percent plus Medicare’s 2 percent plus state and local taxes averaging, after deduction, at 5-6 percent, and you have a 60 percent bracket.
Obama will double the capital gains tax, saddling the 50 percent of Americans who own stock with dramatically higher taxes. Obama will double the dividend tax, hitting elderly coupon-clippers now retired and depending on fixed incomes. Obama wants Homeland Security operatives to be required to notify terror suspects that they are under investigation within seven days of starting the investigation. Nobama. No way.

Not much of a role model.

We knew about his character before this comment anyways!

Jackson has 2 personalities. One in front of the camera and one behind the camera. The one behind the camera is coming out again. Your morals are not credible and now this. Shame on you Jackson.

Race-based insults, anyone?

But "Hymietown" Jackson already knows that if you're a leftist, you can get away with racial slurs.

Now can we all start ignoring this hypocritical "Reverend"?

Liberal left is going to abandon Barack before November . . . Wonder if Nixon is laughing in his grave about Obama using his "rush to the center" tactic now that BHO has disposed of Hillary. . .

Open mouth, remove both feet. Yet another example of why Rev J. should stick to preaching, and get out of politics.

The ONLY reason he is appologizing, is because he got caught, not because he is truly sorry. Jackson is as racist as any man I have ever heard, only diff is he busts down Whites and screams like holy hell if anyone says anything about Blacks. Personally I am glad he got caught using the same type of speach he is so quick to condenm from any one else. What's up J-hole, your big mouth finally caught up with you? And you look so good with egg all over your face. It is about time your true color showed. Wonder why we use the 'N' word when we speak of you?

It never ceases to amaze me how we human beings spend hours carefully crafting messages to portray one image and then, almost spontaneously, through "off camera" remarks when no one else is listening, say the opposite.

Perhaps if we heeded Stephen Covey's maxim, "Be loyal to the absent," we would not have to apologize for hurtful comments - we would never make them.

Oh, come on, Jesse! Sorry to inform you, but you're so over. Please keep your opinions to yourself and keep your work at the local level.

Jesse Jackson is a hater!

The best party of this frenzy, is that Obama was pushing towards more family unity, and who is the first one to jump on Rev. Jackson? His own son. A polticial Greek tragedy if you ask me.

At last......Bush and Jackson become irrelevant.

What is the point of being so jealous? A lot of people wisper and still vote for O-bam

Why is Jackson still getting any air time? The man is totally irrelevant and has absolutely no credibility.
Time after time, he has put his foot in his mouth and made of fool of himself with ludicrous and insane statements, like the ones about the Duke Lacrosse players.
He represents no one except himself. He should be ignored by the press and left to babble to himself.

Jesse Jackson is what is wrong with America.

"The accusation that we live in a racial society, unfair to blacks, all blows up if you get Obama into the White House." How does one arrive at that conclusion? While reasonable people can disagree about the AMOUNT of discrimination and racism which Black folks face, and the DEPTH of the current impact of racial disparity in our courts, in public education, child protection system, housing and other national institutions, no reasonable person could honestly say that the election of a Black man as President of the United States means that we have entirely eradicated racism in this country. Again, reasonable people can disagree about the amount that still exists and the severity of the impact of racism today. But, even successful folks of color like myself (a Black man who is a District Court Judge in the State of Minnesota) is faced with racism and with disparity from time to time. I'd love it if your suggestion were true, that the election of Obama would immediately end racial disparities.

When will Black folks learn that Fox News is not our friend. A few weeks ago, Fox ran a subtitle of sorts under a news clip of Michelle Obama and referred to her as "Barack's Baby's Momma". It was also a Fox News reporter that stated that the now infamous knuckle jab of Michelle and Barack was a terroist gesture. Therefore, it was not suprising to me that this sound bite of Jesse Jackson was captured by Fox News and spread all over the world.

But let's be real...does anyone think that Jesse Jackson is the FIRST person to make a controversial comment when they thought the mike was off? Of course he is not the first to make that mistake. But Fox News being Fox News, they ran with it.

Not discounting the severity of Jesse's comments, but please, People, if you must deal with Fox News, try to watch your back!

Anita M.
Chicago, IL

The real question is why would Jackson go on Fox anyway? Oh, thats right I forgot making sure he gets his face on camera. If Jackson feels that way, tell Obama personally not the press.

Now if we can only get the good reverend to apologize to those kids at Duke University. I'm not going to hold my breath though...

Get real, Obama talks down to everyone

Anita M....that's just great! It's all Fox News fault. Jesse said he wants to castrate Obama and you blame it on the news channel that happened to capture this horrible comment! What you forgot to do was blame Dick Cheney and Haliburton!!! Come on...your off message! Fox is actually going soft on this story...apparently there is more damaging comments that Fox has not released. Do you think MSNBC would do this if a conservative was caught on tape criticizing another conservative?

Anyone smell a setup? The whole location of where it was said and the timing of the apology scream setup. Just who would watch Fox but people likely to be positively influenced by it and the timing was outrageously quick. Whatever....

Wasn't it convenient timing that this little misspeak of Jackson's came at a timely manner to cover the vote in the Senate for doctors' reimbursement bill that Obama went back on. I understand even his closest surrogates were upset by his vote. Today there is nothing to be found anywhere about the vote. I even pulled up yesterday's Tribune and guess what, it only talks about the Senate passing the bill nothing about Obama's vote on it. Isn't this kind of what went on during the primaries? Everytime something bad came out about Obama a second story would break to cover the bad press. HOW CONVENIENT. My opinion is Jackson's comment was a deliberate plant to cover the vote.

Ooops, my bad, it wasn't the doctor bill he voted against, it was the survalliance bill the he voted in favor of. Too many bills too little time. At any rate his vote got squashed.

Blah Blah Blah!

"We are not out to get Jesse Jackson. We are not out to embarrass him and we are not out to make him look bad."

Hah! Bill-O not try to make a black Democrat look bad?? Please.

Rev. Jackson didn't do himself any favors with this comment, but at least he had the sense to "get ahead of his own story." As an African-American myself, I appreciate it when public figures like Obama or Bill Cosby talk about responsibility. I'm college-educated and have had a 20-plus-year career in information technology.

"Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks."

Jesse just discovered this? Seriously, who doesn't Obama talk down to? Just this week we were treated to him telling Americans he's embarassed by them if they don't know a second language.

Boy is this ever being dunned to death. Get over it, Obama deserved the remark. I still say it was a putup to cover the FISA vote. As usual Obama is up to his old tricks. People wake up, he is devious, sneaky, underhanded, untrustworthy candidate that we don't need in the Whitehouse. Him and Michelle two of a kind.

Dear Jesse Jackson,

Thank you for being such a terrible role model for the African-American community. With your help you can create hate not only between races, but within your own race. Keep up the struggle from your multi-million dollar homes located in primarily white neighborhoods.

Much Love,
the White Man

And the Academy Award for best actor goes to......Jessie Jackson for his performance in "Trying to Build Obama's Credibility Among Whites" produced by David Axelrod and Barack Obama. Jackson has been in front of the media for 40 years. He was a presidential candidate. He knows how the media -- and "hot mics -- operate. P.T. Obama has taken his theatrics to a new level and the minions are lapping it up. Meantime he continues to push his socialist agenda for America forward and the breathless are debating Jackson. The bonus is that Obama has made himself the poor victim -- again. Nice try, Obama.

Why are we so hung up on words when there is so much at stake in our country. Hunger, homelessness, and equality should be the focus; not who said what and why he said what. What is wrong with these people who are suppose to be so intelligent? Maybe, they are showing their true colors or maybe they are just plain old stupid.

What puzzled me is why Secret Service didn't immediately arrest him for an admitted personal threat against a United Stated Presdential candidate? I wonder if someone of lesser celebrity had said that, if he wouldn't have been dragged into an unmarked car, handcuffed?

I am forty-eight years old and I have been born and raised in The United States. I have never personally met any Democrat or for that matter anyone who has given a rats, you know what, as to what Jesse Jackson says. This is a non-issue. NEXT!

The only way I can take this is that Obama isnt being "liberal" enough with black folks?

I think Jackson was willing to take a "hit" and look like a jerk for a few days to make Obama not look like a progressive liberal.

Jessie Jackson knew that mic was on and this was nothing more then propaganda either by Jackson to promote Obama or Obama him self telling Jackson to do that.

Obama knows hes loosing voters and in my opinion this is nothing more then Obama playing the people like a fiddle.

Obama is not even black, but African Americans think he is just because he looks black. He does not have any black experience and did not grow up in a black family or environment. He has no right to talk down on African Americans.

This sounds like a set up by the Obama campaign since most people will feel sympathetic to anybody who is attacked by Jesse Jackson.

I wonder if Jesse Jackass is really that dumb, probably, or is this just a ploy to get him back in the news?

This brings back thoughts about Don Imus and his racist comments about the Rutger's womens b-ball team. Where is the Rev. Al Sharpton when you need him. He needs to be holding Rev. Jessie's feet to the fire like he did Imus. I mean saying you are going to, albeit symbolically, castrate someone of color seems as hurtful as what Imus said. Oh, you say this is a black on black matter so its ok?

I love when the libs eat their own. Oh, the party of racism ...

If this were Pat Robertson who said nasty stuff about McCain, the Tribune, the NY Times, the Post, NBC et al would be demanding - DEMANDING - that Fox release all of the statements, not just this snippet. But no, this is not McCain, it's their "messiah Obama," and they do not want more of Jackson's comments for fear they might stick on Obama. And the news media wonder why they're fading faster than yesterday's sunset.

Rev. Jackson needs to immediately resign his position with his church and the rainbow push coalition.

His remarks prove his complete separation from Christian values and utter disrespect for anyone who does not follow his very personal political agenda.

His platform of hatred and racism is simply contrary to the positions he holds.

AMA apologizes to black doctors for past racism

It's odd that some are denying what is real.

Jackson has always recognized the need for black fathers to step-up.

What Jackson has also argued, however, is that our society has to recognize it's past failings and the affects of those failings on black culture.

What most have chosen to do is emphasize on the second part of Jackson's message and not the first part.

Enter Obama and he's doing what Jackson did, but most are focusing on the first part of the message, not the second part.

I'm glad, though, that in the midst of this current controversy, the American Medical Association is "stepping up" and acknowledging their part in society's past discrimination.

Now if we can just get most of the SWAMP posters to acknowledge past discrimination and its affect on the black community.

Bottom line: YES, black men have to step up to their responsibilities; YES society has to step up to its part in negatively affecting blacks lo these many, many years.

You can't change these things overnight, either. It's going to take some time. Progress is being made; but it won't change overnight.

Nice language from a REVEREND. Jackson is just mad and jealous because another black man has usurped his power. Sorry Jesse, but you are no longer the king of African Americans.

I don't think Jesse could actually do it since it appears that Obama's wife is the one that has the balls in that family.
Voting straight republican all the way!

Hey "come on" the majority of the people watch FOX News. Just because your liberal friends can't keep their mouths shut, don't blame Fox. Always the victim. What a shame.

Wow, Fox gets blamed for Jackson's testicle remark. Yet Jackson doesn't have the testicles to go back on Fox to apologize.
Yeah, it was Fox's fault.

I can only imagine what would be printed if someone like R. Limbaugh had said, he wanted to cut Obama's #### off.

Amazing how the Press can get very selective on what they print.

It seems as if the Reverands are hurting Obama the most. Perhaps, they should stick to their religion and keep their mouths shut about politics. Who needs hurtful ("so-called") religious leaders!

The Minnesota Judge was correct in his summation and if we think Reconstruction #1 was evil after the Civil War, just wait until the Judge and the Obama crowb start #2 after the election of Obama

At least we all know that Jackson is the person we all thought he was ... can we stop listening to his rants now? Finally, he gets a taste of his own medicine!

Let's face it - had this happened in the Tribune office, no reporter would ever had said a thing, because the appearance of unity in the Democrat party trumps all honesty.

Hilarious and fun stuff! At last, some refreshing talk regarding Obama. After awhile you get tired of all this hero worship. It's nice to know that Jesse Jackson has these strong feelings. Also, it was disgusting to hear Jackson's son taking Jackson to task and throwing his father under the bus. Obama really needs to get a bigger bus.

The REVERED REVEREND JJ said what? Oh, by golly are we not astonished? After all he is from Chi-town (oops so is Senator O) and that's just the way we Chicagoans talk....right? He ran for the presidency a few years back, but failed to charm enough voters, and there was no open mic around. Good goin' Jesse.

This is exactly what Jesse Jackson deserves for going on Fox News. Did he believe he was in a place of TRUST? Did he not know he was actually in the lions den? Is he so much about HIMSELF that he believes what he saids everyone should agree with? These remarks confirm that this is not the first time he has made crude comments about Barack.

A few words of advise to my brother, Jesse: It's time to move on because a CHANGE is coming. You had your turn - now just move on!

Didn't Natalie Merchant have a song about this? "Jealousy."

"Rev" JJ makes Jeremiah Wright look like a Pollyanna.

I've never heard Jackson say anything that would identify him as a follower of Jesus. Why do people keep listening to him, putting him on TV, etc.? There is REAL news that goes unreported and we get this?

I can't believe how many people actually believed that this was real and not a set up to cover Obama's goofs lately, including his vote for the survalliance bill. That went off the front page as soon as Jackson's comments hit the front page. Obama has used this tactic too many times during the primaries for us to fall for it, but it looks like it worked for a few dummies if you read the comments in this blog.

Maybe Imus could help the reverend.

Jesse showing his true colors once again! No apology can suffice. What? Is that not really the way he feels? He sure didn't use a common "phrase" of distaste, but a VERY violent, mean spirited phrase. How can anyone support this idiot.

Your remarks were hurtful and wrong, Jesse?

Not as hurtful and wrong as the actual act would have been, Rev.

BTW, do you really think it appropriate in any set of circumstances to speak of castrating another black man?

A whole lot of poetic justice here.
His Royal Jesseness is always the first to pounce on other people for for even insinuating something that he finds distasteful.
It's kind of fun to watch this self-righteous jerk have to squirm and grovel like so many have had to do on account of his piousness over the years.
What goes around comes around.

Wait -- is this a racist thing the Reverend said? If a white person had said the same thing on a "hot mic" it certainly would be! Kind of fun to see two "black" political guys at odds with each other -- where's their solidarity now? Oh yeah. Only blacks can criticize other blacks. I forgot.

Jesse Jackson is a hypocrite.

To illustrate the height of hypocrisy and double standards, GOOD THING a White guy didn't say it.

Jesse Jackson didn't even apologize for what he said--just gave a lame excuse that he didn't know he was overheard. Sounds like a thug-based initiative. Reporters should ignore his calls for attention in the future. Whatever he has to say, I don't want to know.

It's been awhile since Jesse had any air time. He jwanted to create a controversy so he can get his face back on the TV screen. "Jetstream" Jackson doesn't speak for me nor any other Black person I know.

The only reason Rev. Jackson feels as if he's being "talked down to" is because he's part of the problem. I'm really surprised that none of the news outlets has mentioned that. Let's not forget that the "good reverend" has another child (probably not older than 10 years old) with a former mistress. Sadly, this child grows up with an absent father -- Rev. Jackson.

I guess guilt and anger can make you say some crazy things. Whatever.

Obama 2008!
