A group of netroots activists plans to deliver a petition to the Capitol this morning with 43,000 signatures, asking senators to boot Joe Lieberman from his position in the Democratic caucus when the new Congress takes its seats in 2009.
Filmaker Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films has led the petition effort, which attacks Lieberman's record on the Iraq war. The petition calls for Lieberman to be removed from his position as chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.
"We CANNOT tolerate a leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus who supports George Bush and McCain's War in Iraq," the states on its website. "We CANNOT tolerate a Democratic chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee who endorses and stumps for McCain. We call on the Senate Democratic Steering Committee to strip Joe Lieberman of his chairmanship and his leadership role."
Matt Stoller of OpenLeft.com said that Lieberman's view on national security and Iraq are a the far right of the political spectrum.
"He has attacked our presidential nominee; he has consistently attacked the position of our caucus," Stoller said in a statement. "He has no standing as a Democrat, and should be stripped of his placement within the caucus. The future of Lieberman's standing within the caucus is a litmus test for whether Democratic senators are serious about ending the war."
Lieberman press secretary Marshall Wittman denounced the petition. He said in a statement that Lieberman will continue to put the country's interests before partisan interests.
"Americans are tired of this type of old petty partisan politics," Wittman said.

Joe lieberman is a traitor to his party & the people who voted for him. also being a senator how could he be on the campaign trail for so long & not attending to his job since he is not running for anything (or is he?)

I agree with the petitioners. The Democrats should expel Lieberman. Anybody who has any sense SHOULD be expelled from the Democratic party.

Let the angry left do their worst. The more they push Joe Lieberman out of the democratic leadership the closer he comes to flipping parties and joining his friend and true patriot, John McCain, on the other side.

It's not just a matter of parties, Lieberman acts and speaks regularly as though Israel were a key part of his constituency.
What a ridiculous situation for an American Senator, but it is why he supports John Mccain. Both of them never saw a bombing run they didn't like.

Do it, Democrats. (1) Anger what few Jewish supporters you have left; and (2) Turn Senate control over to the Republicans when Lieberman joins the GOP. The present alignment is 49 Demos, 49 Republicans and two independents, one of whom is Lieberman. Joe will give the Republicans 50 seats and then so long to Harry Reid. Do it, Demos. No wonder they're called "Dumbocrats."

Lieberman should just be expelled to Afghanistan, where he can run the TAPI pipeline project, boots and hardhat and all. He could also strap on an M-16 and lead the charge over the next sand dune or crag. McCain--well, I'd put him in a plane, except that we don't have enough to spare. I know, they're both too old for duty; so why are they in positions of "leadership"? I mean, WWII is over. Get it?
