Campaigning in Columbus, Ohio today, Sen. John McCain took a shot at Sen. Barack Obama for giving a big speech in Berlin, Germany.

Here's a snippet from the Associated Press story:

"I'd love to give a speech in Germany. But I'd much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate for president," McCain told reporters after a meal of bratwurst with local business leaders at Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant in Columbus' German Village neighborhood.

As Barack Obama delivered a high-profile speech in Berlin, McCain said he was focusing his attention this week on economic issues, including soaring food and fuel costs. He has been busy campaigning and raising funds in key battleground states like Ohio.

In what was clearly not a coincidence, McCain spoke with reporters shortly before Obama began his speech at Berlin's Victory Column.

At the same time, the Republican National Committee was running anti-Obama ads in Berlin, Pa., and other namesake villages in Wisconsin and New Hampshire.

A colleague of mine noted that the visuals of McCain's campaign stop should be low-hanging fruit for the late-night comics. Example: "The Straight-Talk Express stops at the fudge house." And because Steve Schmidt is McCain's campaign director, the name of this particular fudge house takes on special meaning.

5 stars for the photo.

Why would he "prefer" to give a speech in Germany only as President? He challenged Obama to travel to Iraq and he did his own little jaunt down to Columbia.

Next up for George W McCain?

Addressing Hispanics in a Taco Bell down the street from Leisure World Retirement Village in Deadwood, Arizona.

Sixteen Leisure World residents are expected to attend the event.

I continue to be perplexed at the comments of people who say that they don't care what other people think or say.

People who like you, or at least respect you, are more inclined to do things you want them to do.

For example our cowboy-in-chief said "You're either with us or your against us." Guess what? A lot of countries paid lip service to their stated obligations in Afghanistan and Iraq while America has borne the brunt in both life and treasure in those sandboxes.

When it comes to the Venezuelan economy, I gladly vote my wallet by telling Hugo Chavez and his supporters to go screw based on some of their comments.

If you don't think words and diplomacy don't matter - you're wrong.

Yet McCain had no problem when he went to Canada and South/Central America to tout NAFTA while Obama campaigned in struggling swing states. McCain is drifting into a very dark place...

There is a difference between travel and speak and travel and go out of your way to high-profile speak. Why did he choose the venue in Berlin anyway for a high -profile speech? Couldn't he have made it where the issues lay---Iraq? What? Lack of 200 000 young Iraqis to show up and toot your horn for you. At least when Reagan made his speech he was current in his choice of venue where as Mr. Our Time Is Now chose to make a speech by proximity. Which is to say there was no point what so ever to make such a speech in Berlin---except to show the folk back at home that he can look presidential and "restore" foreign love for American policy......

This is why Obama needs to NOT do what Dukakis and Gore and Kerry did--move to the center.
Otherwise, idiots will say 'Well, what's the difference between the two of them?"

"MCCAIN SPEAKS"

OH I WISH I WAS AN OSCAR MIER WIENER, THAT IS WHAT I TRULY WISH TO BE!
OH I WISH I WAS AN OSCA MIER WIENER, THEN I COULD GO TO GERMANY TOOOOOOO!
VOS IST LOS!
IF IT SMELLS LIKE "SCHMIDT" THEN IT IS "SCHMIDT"
WE GOT WALLS!
WE GOT BERLIN WALLS!
OH I WISH I WAS AN OSCAR MIER WIENER, THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO BE! BECAUSE WHEN I SPEAK IF IT SOUNDS LIKE "SCHMIDT" THEN IT IS MCCAIN "SCHMIDT"
NATO IS WHERE, OH WE HAVE "AMERICANS" RESIDING, LIVING, IN GERMANY.
VOS IST LOS MEDIA!
IF I WAS AN OSCAR MIER WIENER, THEN I WOULD BE A "PRESSCOTT" TOOOOOOOOOO!
BECAUSE IF IT IS "SCHMIDT" THEN IT SMELLS, TASTE, AND LOOKS LIKE "SCHMIDT"
SCHMIDT IS SCHMIDT AMERICA! AND I HAVE A LOT OF "SCHMIDT" TO SAY!
BUT IF I WAS AN OSCAR MIER WIENER, THAT IS WHAT I TRULY BEEEEEEEEEE!

The only places abroad he'd really like to speak are little dictatorships beholden to Bush & Co.
What kind of crowd do you think Citizen McKane would draw in Germany? France?
Britain?
Invidious comparison is to be avoided at all costs, John. So just keep talking how much you'd really, really like to speak in Berlin and draw 2000 spectators instead of 200,000.

McWhiner attempted to give a speech in CANADA, I know no one listened but he gave a speech in another country....Or Maybe McWhiner doesn't realize Canada is another country.?

McWhiner has looked PATHETIC this week....What is his platform anyways? No one would know he never does anything but trash Obama.;...That Rove playbook won't work this year

More of the same from McCain. All he can do is try to frighten people into believing Obama is some horribly flawed person who will make a mess of everything. He criticizes Obama for not going overseas then again because he does.

What does McCain have to offer? He acts senile. He looks and acts like an old fool. Obama looks and acts intelligent and energetic.

McCain is not even close to being in the same league as Obama - no contest.

What a sad little man he has become.

McCain is a train wreck, he complained about Obama taking a foreign trip (which he himself goaded Obama into taking, at least the Iraq/Afghanistan part) and forgets that he himself went to Canada (and spoke to a group there), and then Mexico and Colombia--just last month, what was that? And he talked up the Colombia free trade pact?

It is taking all the media's efforts to keep McCain afloat, plus the unease with which a segment of the US population views Obama. But economic news is going to continue to get bad, which makes Obama's end the war to rebuild at home position even more saleable. And then there is even a chance interest rates will rise in October, giving him another boost. The debates are going to be brutal for McCain...if he makes it that far.

I think there is still a good chance the GOP could dump McCain after the convention in favor of his VP pick (Romeny?).
They would probably say something like this:
"McCain steps aside-Health reasons".....

It was OK when McCain gave a speech in Canada recently but it's not OK when Obama gives a speech in Germany? Obama speaks in Germany before a crowd of 200,000 while grumpy Grandpa McCain makes an appearance at a German restaurant in Ohio. What a pathetic campaign, McCain should fire his campaign strategist.

Typical McCain Town Hall:

Voter 1: "My home is going into foreclosure due to a bad loan. What will you do to help me?"

McCain: "The surge is workin. It is Sen. O who is has failed to recognize the surge is workin'."

Voter 1: "But my bad loan. How will you help me?"

McCain: "Sen. O wants to win election instead of winning a war. I will never, ever surrender to Iraqi government. Next question."

Voter 2: "I lost my job and health care and was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Do you have a universal health care plan that I can afford."

McCain: My friends, the surge is workin'. I was right all along. Sen. O is wrong and would rather lose a war than lose an election. That's all the time I have for my economic plan. Good night, my friends."

In my lifetime I've never seen a worse Presidential candidate than McCain, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that his staff has to remind him what his name is every morning.

"love to give a speech in Germany"? Right next to that Iraqi/Pakistani border he referred to earlier in the week. Too dangerous? McBush has no fans anywhere else in the world. If he gave a speech anywhere except White/Rep. America, would anyone hear it?

Beware what the corporate media will do to Obama when he gets home--more reasons for him NOT to go to the center again. It doesn't work. Never has. Never will.
Contact CBS and complaint mightily about this:

DD, it is scary, I guess Obam doesn't know the difference between Germany and Iraq. Here is a hint Obam Iraq troops fighting, Germany, the troops you don't have time to visit - Not Fighting. When McCain said go to Iraq I guess he should have given you a map on how to get to Iraq and back home. Oh well if you can't find your way home we wont miss you. We will just have to have the inaugeration without you.

--The reason why the Europeans don't like us is not because of our words (with us against us) but because of our actions (that imply with us or against us). Nothing will change because he gave a speech in Berlin. Nothing will change if he's elected......Obama said it himself...his election will not change how people feel about US policy. While at the same time he also tried to pass on the idea that Europe owes us to unite in our foreign policy aims.. This is what average Europeans (not their government) think : You will have a hard time getting us to swallow that we have to clean up (use our blood and treasure) your mess in Iraq and Afghanistan, that we'll support going into Pakistan, or go further than sanctioning Iran.
--What's interesting is how Obama calls for a stronger EU in his speech. (Just like when asked to name on of our allies once he said the EU). I'm sure that's the ideal for the US who would gladly like to stop dealing with individual countries and prefer to report to a United States like Union governed or rather monopolized by a few countries who just happen be US (Cold War) allies (who skape goat under the guise of fearing Russia to insure that their national interests are secured). Well the little people in Europe are having a hard time passing EU charters that surpass their own state constitutions, meanwhile cursing the standardization of markets---which erode for example agricultural (more organic) practices (like in Poland) or want to shift markets to be more competitive (like Italy's wine makers).

"I'd love to give a speech in Germany".

But I can't even give a good speech here.

McCain is on the third leg of his, "This is Spinal Tap" tour.

McCain showed up in Canada wilst Obama didn't even know that there is no President of Canada.

Typical Obama Town Hall:

Voter 1: "My home is going into foreclosure due to a bad loan. What will you do to help me?"

I'll tell you to hope, and that I didn't vote to go into Iraq.

Voter 1: "But my bad loan. How will you help me?"

Senator McCain, is a seventy year old vet, I repeat seventy years old... I repeat seventy years old...

Voter 2: "I lost my job and health care and was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Do you have a universal health care plan that I can afford."

Did I mention hope, and I didn't vote for Iraq.

(Just hope I don't end up in Pakistan while you're at it.)

DD5:38pm- because McCain knows this grand standing Senator is on a campaign trip, ....it's silliness. He's skipped over a couple of steps....the election being one, not even making the nomination yet is the other!

Moe 6:51pm someone told me the NEW location he speaks from is where Hitler spoke(?)

Huh? Not quite getting your point here. Obama did visit a lot with the troops and commanders of all levels in Iraq. Are you disappointed he didn't stroll through a Baghdad market with enough firepower around him to invade a small country?

mccain will win this election. in one of the worst weeks a candidate has had mccain has drawn even with obama. mccain is set to move ahead of obama in the next two weeks and when that happens obama will not catch up.americans are making a collective judgement that obama is not american enough. the berlin speech showed all americans obama's message of american defeat and second class status. contrary to obama's anti american views americans view themselves as THE world power. the american empire tells the world what the agenda is not the other way around. mccain will win in the fall. ironic that with all the hoopla this year americans will kick the ball down the road 4 years in hope of two better candidates to chose from.mccain may not be the best choice but he is better than obama. neither of these candidates hold a candle to candidates of elections past.

Sure, McCain would love to have given a speech in Berlin in front of 200 people. That's about how many people would show up to see him. This is the 21st Century. People are looking forward. We want new ideas. We want new visions. We don't want a mediocre mind that has been pickled in negativity leading the free world. McCain is Weird. He tried to upstage Obama by going to three cities in the USA named Berlin, and eats bratwurst in a German restaurant as though that will neutralize the triumphal appearance of Obama before more than 200,000 cheering people. Go Obama!!!!!!

I respect McCain for his public service. It is too bad when people keep thinking they are relevant and can't understand that they need to step aside and let someone else take the reins. I am an uncommitted voter and am getting close to a decision on who to vote for. I don't know if it is him or his "handlers" (Schmidt) but he looks like an old coot who can't deal with reality. The GOP leadership should take a page from a reality show amd "back door" McCain at the convention unless they really don't care who is the next president. After this I feel he has no chance...he looks desparate.

locknessmonster- Come over to the dark side !

Going to German Village was an awesome way to poke fun at Obama. Ohio is full of swing voters and once again, there are very few american citizens in Germany except for our military personnel stationed over there that Obama ignored.

Jeff, how many American citizens were there in Columbia when McCain went on his overseas trip a few weeks ago?

What a complete doofus.

McCain was planning his own European campaign trip. However, when he insisted on stopping in Czechoslovakia, the trip had to be cancelled after his aides spent a week trying to find it that country on the map and failed.

Oh those Germans! They still hate us for WWII beat-up. The reason so many Germans show-up for Obama is they're so few Americans visiting Their unfriendly State once they see one they got exited.

Oh those Germans. They stil hate America for WWII beat-up. They unfriendlines cose that so few Americans ever visit their sate. One they spot one (an American) they run like nuts to see him . Next time German start the war US should't intervine. Mayby that way europian socialist lern lesson.

I know there were at least 15 contractors, there, JT.

Wow that should real swing the election for him Jeff! What a coup!

Obama is a 'social butterfly', which works out good, it'll go along with his flowery speeches.

McCain is just a bitter old man. He is not going to get an audience that large.
