McCain's 'Czech Republic' problem: The Swamp

John McCain seems to be having trouble distinguishing his Czech Republics from his Slovakias.

The senator from Arizona and presumptive GOP nominee has called the European country, the Czech Republic, by the wrong name...twice.

Czechoslovakia, as McCain calls it, no longer exists. The country split in 1993 into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Yesterday at a town hall meeting in New Mexico, McCain said:

"And I regret some of the recent behavior Russia that has exhibited, and I'll be glad to talk about that later on including reduction in oil supplies to Czechoslovakia after they agreed with us on a missile defense system, et cetera."

He made a similar statement on Monday, again referring to "Czechoslovakia."

McCain's campaign must have caught the mistake, because it issued a statement referring to the Czech Republic more than once.

57 statesNot to say his opponent Sen. Barack Obama never slipped up on camera. While on the campaign trail in Oregon, he lost count of the number of states in the U.S. He said he had visited 57 states, and had one more to go.

He was just trying to be hip with the young voters and prove he was "old school" by dropping some retro terms like "Czechoslovakia."

If he says they're Czechslovakia, they're Czechslovakia. What do the people who actually live there know? How dare they insult a decorated POW like McCain by pretending to be two separate countries, when John McCain says they are not. He is the foriegn policy genius of our time.

Oh my, a slip. Almost like a presidential candidate believing that he's campaigned in 57 states. "Ah, ah, you know, buh, buh, buh...." Mr. Articulate? Nobama.

If he supports Bush's plan to put a missile defense site there and claims to be a military expert, it seems he ought to know the current name and political status of the country.

"Jamal", the difference between McCain saying "Czechoslovakia" by mistake, and Obama claiming "57 states" (or claiming the Declaration of Independence begins with "We hold these truths...") by mistake, is obvious: The Swamp will headline the mistake by Republican McCain, and never mention the mistake by Democrat Obama.

Hope that clears things up for you!

This is no big deal. He simply misspoke and meant no disrespect. I do feel sorry for the creepy Republican Party though. They have nothing positive to say about McCain. The most convincing, non-racist, non-bigoted reason to not vote for Obama I've heard them say is that Obama knows what arugula is....and that, my friends, is the dumbest disqualification for President I've ever heard.

A nice example of Fretland's bias. Millions of people still coloquially refer to the two countries as Czechoslovakia while there's never, ever been 57 states as the supposedly articulate Obama tells us he's campaigned in. How shocking that there was no swamp story about that.

Also still looking for the swamp post about how Obama thinks Afghans speak Arabic: http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/05/oops-obama-goofs-wants-more-arabic.html The silence has been deafening on that one, too.

Prague is a glorious city and the people are wonderful. McC's glitch just shows, again, that Americans don't know very much about European history. Hell, they don't know very much about American history.

It's getting to appear that McCain really doesn't know much about anything. He might have been a decent candidate eight years ago but since he started becoming a disciple of the Bush policy he appears he has lost it. We have had enough senility in high office with Reagan's second term.

Gosh darn it! Where is Joe Lieberman when you need him?

Jeff-

What language do Osama Bin Ladin and many of his supporters in Al Qaeda speak? What language do they write in?

Do you think it might be wise to have some people who can translate arabic around to be able to evaluate any documents that our troops come across in raids on AQ?

Obama is exactly right. We need arabic translators in Afghanistan.

Once again you show the utter and sustained ignorance that is the cause of so many Republican foreign policy failures. The gaffe is your, not Obama's.

Grampy John McSame may very well be dumber than George Bush:

And what is the next stop for the "Crooked-talk express"? Lenningrad?

I can't wait for McCain's major speech next month on his plan to defeat the Soviet Union and win the Cold War. I hear that the key element in his strategy is bombing Iran.

One BIG difference between McCain's "gaffe" and Obama's "gaffe": McSame keeps making the same mistake!!!
Does he listen to ANYBODY? Surely someone on his staff gave him the right term to use! What bull-headedness makes him say these dumb things?

I can't believe people want this man to be POTUS. He screws up every viable opportunity he gets. Old age maybe?

No. It's got to be to maintain the sitting lame duck status quo. So the execs at Bears n Stearns, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae can continue to get bailed out with taxpayers monies, and maintain their hugh portfolios while me, the working bee pay for it as Social Security and my 401K savings dissapear before I reach age 60.

See www.ameripundit.com for the video of ex-Sen. Sam Nunn, called by the Swamp a potential Obama running mate, also call the country "Czechoslovakia". He did it today, at the Obama-fest in Indiana.

Any bets Ms. Fretland will write an article on THIS mistake?

Bruce,
According to the logic that you use on this site and several others, neither candidate is qualified to be president. You know, your favored argument "if they can't get that basic fact right, why should we trust anything else they say"? It must be tough being perfect, eh brucie?

Why don't those of you who are knocking Senator Obama because he made an innocent gaffe travel around as much as HE HAS and see how often YOU MIS-SPEAK!!!! YOU KNOW GOOD AND WELL THAT HE KNOWS HOW MANY STATES THERE ARE SO GET OVER IT AND GET A LIFE!!!
