According to a press pool report, a boy stretched out his fist to give Sen. Barack Obama the famous fist bump yesterday and Obama denied it.
Obama said, "If I start that..." before trailing off.
But according to a review of ABC's video, described here at their Political Radar blog, the child did not initiate a fist bump, but wanted a Obama signature on his hand. Here is what ABC reports:
Child: Can you sign my hand?
Obama: If I start that...plus Mom might not be happy when she comes home. She'll be like, 'what is the dirt on your hand?'...see ya.
Child: Can you sign it in pen so it will come off?
The child rose his hand in a fist to get Obama's attention as he asked for a signature.
Obama instead signed the autographs for the children in crayon on drawings they were working on.
The senator was touring the Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio.
In a fist-bump transfer of political parties, President Bush used the fist bump yesterday in Little Rock, Ark., according to the KTHV television station. He gave the bump during a greeting with 12-year-old Robbie Powell and thanked him for his volunteer efforts in raising money for a rare neurological disease.
Obama made the fist bump newly-famous when he and his wife tapped knuckles during his speech claiming the Democratic nomination for president.
Here is Bush's bump:

Comments
Your quote is wrong. The pool report, if you read it directly, says that the second part of the "If I start that..." comment was hard to make out. So we don't actually know what was said.

But Fox News would have accused Obama of indoctrinating our youth with his nasty "terrorist fist jab." He had to turn the kid down...

Look, Obama is black and whether it be a fist bump or the brothers' hand shake or a chest bump, let him be what he is. He doesn't have to pretend to be white to be president.

Dubya did the fist bump? Gosh! Didn't the neocons call that a terrorist jab?

Non-story - must be a slow news day.

Since the obamas are such trendsetters, Michelle will do for the tiara what Jackie O did for the pill box hat.

God, do you not have anything to write about?

Who cares?!?!?
As John McCain says, this doesn't add a single gallon of diesel for his wife's Budweiser trucks.

Is this the Chicago Tribune or the National Enquirer?
How does any of this count as news?

Good work, Media!
Keep em talking about fist bumps and American flag pin lapels.
Then we won't be talking about what our candidates will be doing about our dependence on foreign oil and what it is doing to our country. Then we will not be reminded about our plummiting our standard of living, hyperinflation, and things like that.
The media is criminally guilty for what they do NOT report!

I agree with Jamal. Obama should not hide his black heritage. Fist bump, black hand clasp, embracing rap musicians, even saluting the black national anthem should not be barred by him for his
public personna. If he wants the black vote, he should not distance himself from it. He is what he is and there are no reasons to apologize for it.

It is a non story, but I heard Michelle Obama did something like that on the view. It shows no class. Can you imagine the two of them meeting foreign dignitaries and doing that? Ug. This may very well end up being our first family.

OMG, this is a slow newsweek.
Posted by: Todd M | July 2, 2008 11:06 AM
Should this qualify as news? Because he denied the child a fist bump, does that mean he's going to deny him healthcare or education? I don't understand why editors play up this kind of trivial information.
Posted by: ttj | July 2, 2008 11:11 AM
Good thing Obama declined the bump. What if that terrorist child had some sort of device, or hypnotic drug dart, or an anti-American propaganda loaded flash drive hidden within HIS fist? What then? Where were the Secret Service detail members who are sworn to protect Obama from harm? How did this child get withing "bumping" distance of the presumptive nominee in the first place? I want answers, not swarmy press reports!!

For all who say "who cares,"the import is not that he denied some kid a fist bump, but that he was somewhat rude, in turning away instead of talking with the kid.

Definitely agree with all the other posts about the media completely messing up their role to the public.
"The senator was touring the Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio."
What was Obama there for anyways? Probably not just shaking hands... wish we could actually get some answers to real policy issues before we have bread that costs $10 a loaf and a spreading war.
Empires rise and empires fall, if we don't start demanding progress than we will be taught in the same section of history books as Rome.

Gosh, it sure is getting crowded under the Obama bus. By my count, Obama's white grandmother, Reverend Wright, Tony Rezko, William Ayers, Pfleger, the Obama Presidential Seal, Wesley Clark and the fist bump are all down there. Do the wheels even touch the ground, anymore?

I had a spinning class on Monday night. The instructor gave everyone in class a fist bump aftewards. How CRAZY is that? It's amazing when people can't catch on to something that has permeated our society (black, white, any color) for over 2 years now.
Posted by: CKF | July 2, 2008 12:00 PM
First I think people want to think of Obama as a presidential candidate, not a black presidential candidate. So his using black actions may endear him to the black voters, but not the the other 95% of the voters out there. No he doesn't have to pretend to be white, even though he uses his white half when helpful to his objectives. As for Michelle, no tiera, it will be an actual CROWN! The reason people are talking about fist bumps and lapel pins is because Obama hasn't given us anything else regarding the economy, war, taxes, etc. to talk about. He is and empty suit with only his black heritage to go on. Unfortunately there are only the few worshipers and black community to support him.

Obama saw that he wasn't of voting age and blew the kid off. Typical politician.
Posted by: The Laughing Liberal | July 2, 2008 12:14 PM
the fist bump had its origins in the military, i.e., as a ring-knocker. fellow service academy graduates would knock class rings as a sign of greeting and camraderie whenever meeting throughout their career. don't make it racial, because it is not.

@ jamal
But he is half white - oh yes, I forgot, that side of the family is "unavailable for comment."
Posted by: Michael Lawrence | July 2, 2008 12:35 PM
What about the fist bump is black? Get real. It is used all over. Remember the cartoon where the characters bumped their rings to activate their super power? "Wonder Twin powers...activate".

Can we have something newsworthy, please?

"It is a non story, but I heard Michelle Obama did something like that on the view. It shows no class. Can you imagine the two of them meeting foreign dignitaries and doing that? Ug. This may very well end up being our first family."
Mrs. Obama was JOKING when she did it on The View, in response to Fox "News" calling it a "terrorist fist jab". It was funny. You should watch the clip; it might help you understand context.
Just because Obama and his WIFE did it at a rally and some kid ALLEGEDLY walked up to him and did the same does not mean that Obama would "fist jab" a foreign dignitary if he were President.
Do you worry that President Bush would kiss the Prime Minister of Great Britain just because he kisses Mrs. Bush? That's just silly.

OK Katie.
If this is the best you can come up with I think you need to go back and work in the mail room for a few years.

no story here other than the press and the Group Of Pathetics (GOP) party trying to create one....

So, John McCain and his wife, who together own SEVEN homes, fail to pay property taxes on one of their homes.
Had this been Obama, this would have propelled him to the forefront of the conservative media's headlines and he would have been mercilessly attacked as an unpatriotic elitist.
But yet, we're talking about denied fist pumps and the McCain story is nowhere to be found.

"So we don't actually know what was said. "
You're a lying piece of right wing feces. The audio was crystal clear, and we KNOW that the boy wanted an autograph on his hand.

"For all who say "who cares,"the import is not that he denied some kid a fist bump, but that he was somewhat rude, in turning away instead of talking with the kid."
The import is that you and all other right wingers are liars; he was not rude.

"It is a non story, but I heard Michelle Obama did something like that on the view. It shows no class. Can you imagine the two of them meeting foreign dignitaries and doing that? Ug. This may very well end up being our first family. "
Michelle is classy, and was classy on the view, regardless of what you "heard" on your racist right wing grapevine.

Another non-story. The kid wanted Barry to put an indelible stamp on his hand. Barry correctly wondered if his mother would be happy about it. More empty, bogus propaganda from the self serving corporate press. And you guys wonder why your readership is evaporating.
