AMMAN, Jordan--Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama completed a visit to Iraq on Tuesday acknowledging progress in the country over the past year but unwilling to declare that the Bush Administration troop surge he opposed has been a success.
"I believe that the situation in Iraq is more secure than it was a year and a half ago. I think that the definition of success depends on how you look at it," Obama said at a news conference in Jordan shortly after he landed here for the next stop on an international tour that also will take him to capitals in the Middle East and Europe.
After the news conference Obama met with Jordan's King Abdullah and then had dinner with the king and other Jordanian and American officials. Later in the evening, he was scheduled to go on to Israel, where he meets with government leaders Wednesday.
The international trip, which began with visits to combat zones in Afghanistan and Iraq, is an opportunity for the candidate to assure American voters of his capabilities as a potential commander in chief. Though polls show Obama ahead in the presidential race at the moment, many voters say they have reservations about his readiness to lead the country on national security issues, a key potential vulnerability.
At the news conference, held at the site of an ancient ruin that provided a striking panoramic view of the Jordanian capital, many of questions focused on his policy judgments on the Iraq War.
Obama stressed that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and even the Bush administration have in recent days moved closer to his signature policy on Iraq calling for a timeline for withdrawal of U.S. combat troops within 16 months after Obama would take office. Maliki said on Monday he favored a goal of removing U.S. combat troops by 2010, within a few months of the date Obama has proposed.
"When you look at an increasing recognition that we can't stay in Iraq in perpetuity and that a time frame, timetable, timeline, whatever you want to refer to, is appropriate, I think that the judgments that I've made over the course of the last two years are ones that match up with the reality on the ground," Obama said.
But he demurred when asked if Republican rival John McCain should be credited with good judgment for supporting the Bush administration's troop "surge" last year that was followed by a dramatic drop in sectarian strife in Iraq.
"I will leave it to the voters to make that decision. And my hope is to avoid a colloquy with the McCain campaign over the next four or five days, partly because I think when we're overseas, we're trying to ... focus on some areas of agreement."
Obama, who has argued the success of the Bush administration strategy in Iraq should be judged on long-term political reconciliation, conceded signs of progress in that direction. He cited the Maliki government's offensives in Basr and Sadr City against militias from his own Shiite sect. He called those offensives "a confidence-building measure." Some Shiite militia groups have targeted Sunnis in sectarian killings.
But he said the pace of progress has been inadequate.
"So far, I think we have not seen the kind of political reconciliation that's going to bring about long-term stability in Iraq," Obama said.

I can just hear Obama saying to the King, "Soon I will also be King".

Yes Virginia, there is hope at the end of this long dreary 8 year tunnel of Bush andhis lies. And as for your King comment, Do you mean kind of like Bush and his total disregard for the Constitution?

Recall a May, 2008 report to Congress, about progress on Iraq's success "benchmarks, the Bush admin. reported success on 15 of the 18 benchmarks that Congress established. Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre, who requested the report, scoffed at the findings and questioned the definitions of success. He must have forgotten that Congress declared the definitions for success. Now we have Obama, standing on the ground that has significantly changed as a consequence of the surge he opposed, indicating "success is how you look at it." Clearly, we've got some great leaders in the Democratic party. Let's put them in charge of everything !

How many views does Obama have on Iraq now...about 8?
Talk about flip-flopping!

It's good to see a candidate for president who bothers to do his homework, talks to people and actually listens, bases his position on the facts and remembers his positions on issues from one day to the next. Senator Obama will make a fine president, and I am looking forward to voting for him in November.

I had no doubt whatsoever that Obama would give us a better observation of Iraq than the supposed "foreign policy expert", McCain did.
I still remember that "peacefull stroll" through Baghdad McCain took, the one where he was protected by a bullet proof vest, three Blackhawk helicopters, two Apache gunships and 100's of American troops and then afterwards he declared that Baghdad was "safe"....:

And then the next day McCain gave a speech in Israel and repeatedly proved that he still didn't know the difference between the Sunni's and the Shiites in Iraq:

Scott, you make some interesting observations. Can you please expand on these thoughts by citing a few of the President's lies and citing some examples of his actions which have been found unconstitutional? Thanks.

A real leader admits when he was wrong, gives credit where credit is due, and is humble when he is right.
Where does Obama rank himself on that scale?

You're joking right? Like how about the 1st reason we went to the "undeclaired" war in Iraq because of the WMD's for one..you know, that war that's killed and maimed thousands of our people and millions of Iraqi's? I dont need to continue answering your obvious "head-in-the-sand" mentality regarding the current administration.

The Surge has brought down US casualties, and it would be unwise not to acknowledge this given its importance to nearly all voters.
But the Surge has not led to reconciliation between Sunni and Shiite. To the extent that reconciliation is now beginning (some Sunni politicians have rejoined the Mejlis) its because Sunnis and Shiites now have an opportunity to press the Americans to leave. That's hardly the kind of victory McCain expected of the Surge. McCain thought "Victory" meant being able to occupy Iraq forever (100 years). McCain never did understand that an Occupation does not equal a victory in Iraq and that's one of the biggest reasons why he's going to lose to Obama this fall.

This whole week should have the McCain campaign carefully re-evaluating what they wish for.
Criticize Obama for his lack of foreign policy cred? Goad him into taking a trip overseas? Then cry and moan about how they're not getting any campaign coverage? HAHAHA!

Were it 1945, would Obama be saying that we cant stay in Japan or Germany indefinitely?
Now those countries are important locations in our global defense strategy.
Get a clue, B.

McCain made a big stink out of Obama not having gone to Iraq recently, so the media is giving it full coverage. Because of McCain. It backfired on you McCain!
The Haterade drinkers are out in full force today, trying to make up for the fact that McCain is making actual fundamental gaffe after gaffe, and is looking terrible as compared to Obama, who's quite frankly looking like the people actually like him, as opposed to gripping and grinning with their American overlords.

I think Roger needs some medication. Obama is having a hard time admitting that the surge is working. After he saw for himself, he had to admit that he could not spin this in a negative way. I wonder how the liberal media will carry this?
Obama sees for himself that the surge is working. Feels that we need to add additional troops so we can accomplish the mission in 16 months. Since he was campaigning against Hillary he did not have time to find out the real story. Obama eats with the troops. Obama is a hero. Obama wins the war that the Republicans could not. I would have voted for the Surge if I has not voted against it. I thought it was working but needed the issue for my campaign. This is however not a flip flop. I thought the system was broken. I didn't hear anyone say the surge was working. I was not there that Sunday. I can no more say the surge is working than I could say we won WWII. As my Grandmother use to say before she got ran over, don't trust anyone. Go see for yourself.
God Bless America. God Bless our Troops. And God Bless John McCain a true hero.

Another Ego-bama gaffe. Or at least it would be a gaffe, if a Republican said it.

Do you seriously believe this trip gives Obama foreign policy credentials? If that is the case, then I must be an expert on Russia because I once spent a whole month there. No, I think the trip gives him frequent-flyer miles and an acquaintance with some of the players.

Anyone who watched Obama's press conference in full and McCain's in his last visit to the Middle East would walk away with no doubt that Obama has such a stronger grasp of the issues and would make much better judgements on what to do with any matter that might arise.

Ya just read the headlines, don'tcha'?
The only reason Obama's gotten this far is because no one's actually pressed him on anything.
And, on the odd chance someone actually does, he slips into the Chicago Machine Double-Speak Two-Step.
Wait for the debates.
Wait for Obama to be out there fielding questions without a teleprompter.
Wait until you realize how badly you've been hoodwinked by a guy who's done nothing but campaign for higher office.
The only thing Barack Obama has "changed" in his entire political career has been his address.
Posted by: meh | July 22, 2008 4:08 PM
Does McCain even know that India borders Pakistan and the six plus decade problems between them?
I love how Obama brought up the interconnectivity between different diplomatic problems that are out there.
And yes, Obama looks and sounds incredibly Presidentital. I want to see the wingnuts go off about his need for a telepromter...as opposed to their candidate (McCain), who just stares at it and reads.

Just seems that as much as the right calls Obama the messiah, they seem to have the same feelings for Bush no matter how many times he lies or bombs or sells out our country!!

As soon as the situation in Iraq gets better, Obama immediately claims that his view matches with reality. But he failed to state why it's getting better. It's better because the surge strategy works. A strategy that was backed by John McCain and opposed by Obama back in January 2007. Obama is just an opportunistic who trying to claim credit for something that he opposed.

It is appearent that Obama cannot recognize the truth even when it hit's him in the head.
He's wrong most of the timeand when confronted he either changes the subject or lies.
I believe he is the most condescending person I have ever seen running for public office. The distance between his ego and his personal level of sucess is beyond belief.

Why do the media shield Obama from just how inarticulate he is without a TelePrompter? If you had reported accurately on his press conference, the report would have been three times as along with all of his "uhs," his "ahs," his stammering, his answers with no meaning. We don't ask much. Just tell the truth about this man before it's too late.

No one's speaking up about the $75k gift Democratic Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Chris Dodd, received from Countrywide in the form of a discounted mortgage rate for "VIPs" that he indicated he was unaware of. All's quiet ! How many people noticed the banking law he just wrote pawns off the most radioactive mortgages onto the federal govt.? Nice quid pro quo for Countrywide ! Then we have 9 term Congressman William Jefferson, currently charged with 16 counts of racketeering, bribery, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. That was after the FBI found $90,000 in bribery money in his freezer. Gotta love that COLD CASH the Dems love to have !!!!

Have you seen where Katie Curric took Obama to task about the progress we've made in Iraq. That was SWEEEEET! He had that coming, but that shouldn't be all he gets. Where is the media on this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If they want to make an incredible political video, have all the soldiers on screen talking of the pride they felt in the job they've done, have several people off the street talking of how proud we are of our soldiers and thanking them for all they've done. Have mothers and fathers and wives that have had losses talking about their family members commitment to our freedoms. THEN> have Obama's Katie C. interview and all the framents of video showing him refusing to give credit because he has to be RIGHT! This is not leadership. If you don't agree with the WAR that's one thing, but you still stand up and give incredible praise and thankds to our troops. He doesn't show leadership.
