All that basketball seems to be taking at least a slight toll on Sen. Barack Obama's nearly 47-year-old body.
Late Sunday, he visited the University of Chicago Medical Center to have a sore hip checked by an orthopedic doctor. It has been bothering him since before the start of his overseas trip on July 17.
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the basketball injury is nothing serious, but some X-rays were taken.

Obama having x-rays on a sore hip? I'm the latte sipping Obama worshiper, and even I can't believe that's not at least a little dishonest. But I'm lapping it up! If they can pull this off, what are the next 10 weeks going to be like? I can hardly wait for the show to go on! (They get another $10 out of me for this bit of ingenuity!)

Presidential candidate has hip problems? Just another fluffy story about McCa......wait a minute, wha?????

Barack needs to take a short vacation.

While you're checking on the medical condition of your hero, any word on the condition of his lungs? He's a smoker. If McCain's age counts against him, someone should figure out the realistic 'age' of a smoking man; it usually isn't his chronological age.

Is this maybe why he refuses to release his medical records and only gave a one-page letter from his family doctor?
What Obama actually did in Iraq from a soldier's POV:
Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to "The War Zone". I wanted to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.
As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.
So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.
I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.
If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.
In service,
CPT Jeffrey S. Porter
Battle Captain

American Soldier

Alot of soldiers made plans to visit and shake hands with Obama by the x-ray machine, but when they were told "no cameras" they decided to go play basketball instead.
What's wrong with them...
Don't they know Obama fought for peoples freedoms and lives as a community organizer!

Hip injuries, even small ones, can be very uncomfortable and/or painful. They rate in there with back and knee injuries. Better to check it out and make sure all is okay than to ignore it and have it become a real problem.

I was watching this no-news story and the only thing that picked me up after hearing he was fine, was hearing >We do have video hee hee.
McCain may give them a run for their money on these stories.

omg !!! The agony of it all, and since he went on that overseas trip and played b-ball with the troops....so sad. The sacrifices he makes for our fighting men and women.

Here is breaking news as well, "Obama just sneezed".
Posted by: Paul | July 28, 2008 8:00 AM
Why is the Tribune allowing this now-discredited diatribe from Captain Porter to go up in the comments on an unrelated point? Even Porter himself now admits in the Navy Times that much of the letter was flat out wrong.

It is probably a a bask lumbar disk. The pain radiates to the hip.

Who cares? Is this news?
Posted by: Pat_M | July 28, 2008 8:40 AM
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Compare our soldiers to fighting for peoples freedom? Where do you live? Iraq/USA. Is that all you think it takes to be President?

I knew the Bulls shouldn't have drafted him!
Posted by: Mark Anderson | July 28, 2008 8:54 AM
His "sore hip" could be from the continual application of lips belonging to the media to that area of his body.
Posted by: clyde | July 28, 2008 9:05 AM
Maybe he needs a hip replacement, when his Health Plan takes effect he'll have to wait 18 months.
Perhaps, this is kharma?
Posted by: James Poulsen | July 28, 2008 9:08 AM
How about the fact that he didn't want the American flag on the stage? I guess we were missing it when it aired on tv! There were probably wounded troups in front of the flag, huh? This empty suit can do no wrong!

Regarding the post from Jeff above wherein he posted an email from Cpt. Porter in Afghanistan, this has been debunked and is untrue.

I see that bogus email is still being posted. Since it's been discredited, why do you keep allowing it to be posted here? I thought these comments were moderated.
Posted by: Greylock | July 28, 2008 9:30 AM
Hey, Jeff, that e-mail from Jeffrey S. Porter is a fake.

Posted by: dalmatian847 | July 28, 2008 10:33 AM
Oh this is rich. Jeff, you complain about media bias and sloppy journalism here on a daily basis. You have an advanced pedigree in the field and you produce a fake chain email to slam Obama? I'm sure the RNC is still proud of you though. Good work soldier.
Posted by: Bubba | July 28, 2008 10:50 AM
Sore hip? Then he must be too old. He's not young enough. Granted he has no experience doing anything, but with a sore hip, he won't get my vote!
Posted by: BDD | July 28, 2008 11:11 AM
People with sore hips have a fear of moving forward.
Posted by: Jessie | July 28, 2008 11:16 AM
So who cares if Obama's got a sore hip, sore head, or sore anything else? I'm so sick of trivial, stupid reports about this guy that I'm ready to quit newspapers altogether!
Posted by: thatsit3 | July 28, 2008 11:22 AM
Lies, lies, lies. What we're not being told is 4 men are responsible for the painful hip Obama has--Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and McCain. Their motive is clear--if Obama has pain, he may drop out of the race. We need to impeach these 4 Texans as soon as possible so our man Obama can win the race.

A 30 yr old smoker can expect to live till about 65, A 30 yr old non-smoker 83. Each cigerette takes 11 minutes off your life span. If a smoker who is 30 yrs of age stops smoking they will add 8 1/2 years to their life expectancy. Looks like Obama has 18 more years, then puff!

McCain is from AZ!

I read with interest the comment by Jeffrey Porter. Seems he has recanted his comment. The message has been in a number of papers. And Yahoo says he has recanted it. Seems to me this is the work of some Rovian smear campaign.
Posted by: Tom | July 28, 2008 12:16 PM
If you take the quiz linked at the right side of this very page, you'll see that McCain is a former 2-pack-a-day smoker himself.
If you take those quizzes, you might also note a few other interesting factoids.
God forbid anybody actually support a candidate based on accurate facts about their backgrounds and positions.
Posted by: KSmith | July 28, 2008 12:22 PM
Absolute BS from the leftist posters. Porter said he's sorry the e-mail made it into wide dissemination. He never denied writing it or said it was a fake. I think he just didn't realize it would get such wide distribution. He's not a political person but it doesn't change the fact that he is and always was dead on right about Obama. The e-mail is 100% real. Deal with it.
Posted by: Jeff | July 28, 2008 12:30 PM
Obama quit smoking. Laura Bush still takes a puff or two a day.
Posted by: Tom | July 28, 2008 12:32 PM
To see so many comments on a non story demonstrates we all have too much time on our hand and need to get a life.
Posted by: Get a Life | July 28, 2008 12:35 PM
Obama has a sore hip. So now I expect a collection of articles discussing hip surgery and how many of the most awesome athletes in history – including Bo Jackson and Mike Ditka – have had hip problems. Or at least I expect to see an article or two explaining that the greatest presidents in history also had musculo-skeletal problems.
Posted by: JB | July 28, 2008 12:39 PM
Some people will view this as Captain Porter fibbing and needing to correct the record. I suspect a great many more will view this as proof positive that the story was true, but Captain Porter was pressured by superiors to claim it is not true.
Posted by: Jeff | July 28, 2008 12:42 PM
Nice spin Jeff.
Posted by: Bubba | July 28, 2008 1:53 PM
Hey Jeff - just look at the evidence and you'll see how wrong you are. Jeffrey Porter says straight up that his information was wrong, the Bagram spokesperson says he's flat-out wrong, numerous soldiers say that he is wrong, there's video that shows he's wrong, and there's pictures that show he's wrong. The email was a lie, plain and simple, and there's no way to spin that:

I wish people would stop slagging the guy off about this.
Hip pain is really hard to deal with, especially if you are standing a lot and walking a lot like he must be.
I had hip pain caused by arthritis and believe me, its really dehabilitating. Just getting out of bed in the morning can be a killer.
So please, show some compassion, it's OK that he's told people, some people (like me) might even related to what he's saying.
I give him my support for soldiering on through it!
