There's something deeply troubling about a seminary student pulling from the Western Wall in Jerusalem Sen. Barack Obama's prayer to God and turning it over to the media. Think about it. A seminary student. Here's hoping this person eventually goes into some other line of work.
In any event, that appears to be what happened to the prayer Obama wrote on King David Hotel stationery and tucked into the wall during his visit to the holiest of sites in Jerusalem.
We received a copy of the note yesterday. But the Obama campaign indicated it wasn't Obama's though it certainly appeared to be in his handwriting.
But even if we had been totally convinced of the prayer's authenticity, there was the question of privacy and whether the sanctity of a communication between a human being and his Maker should be violated.
Evidently, some journalists in Israel got past any qualms they might have had and published the purported Obama prayer note.
There are some people and journalists who believe anything a public official does is arguably in the public domain.
But even candidates for president of the United States, have human rights. One of them would seem to be the right to pray in private. Just because Jewish tradition calls for a prayer to be written down and placed in the wall shouldn't make it any less private.
One might hope that even if journalists didn't understand that, seminary students would. Apparently, that's not the case.

Comments
This is a disgusting story regardless of party or politics. I would be equally repulsed if the same had happened with McCain.

The above article is a satire, right?
1) After all, even Obama is smart enough to know that any paper he writes is likely to be made public. We all expect he wrote his "prayer" (or more accurately, had one of his staff compose the prayer) with an eye toward it being made public.
2) Since Obama invited hordes of news cameras along to photo his depositing the "prayer", it is obvious the whole thing was a campaign stunt, not private like a prayer should be, and thus fair game for publicity.
3) Add to that a journalist proclaiming yet another Obama action "off limits". There is "something deeply troubling" about journalists who work overtime to AVOID finding news about a candidate.

Think about it, he was once a journalism student. I sure hope Frank James goes into some other line of work.
After all, he puts Obama's rights so far ahead of the people's that his judgement is clearly questionable.

While I am Christian and religious as the next person, it never ceases to amaze me that those who purport themselves to be even more religious always find a way to get justify such activity that would be seen as counter to their religion.
This is where they pray that they are human, thus prone to mistakes and beg forgiveness for their actions.

Jeff,
You mean Obama's judgement when he said Iraq would be "easy" and there would be "no house to house fighting in Baghdad"?.......wait.

Why is it that Mr. James writes like an acolyte for Mr. Obama?

Well, I heard that it was in his own pen, but what it said was not meant to be read>
PLEASE PICK ME, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!
As for the boy, well, the Oppressed never sin in Black Jesus' eyes.

Yes Jackson, Obama was dead wrong when he said that. You know you stick your foot in your own mouth even more than your candidate? That's an impressive feat. Maybe it's contagious.

O Lord, I'm clueless. Please, PLEASE give me a clue.
Posted by: Barry | July 25, 2008 4:02 PM
Jeff,
McCain used his judgement and insight to make those predictions. On Meet the Press and other outlets. There's YouTube video to boot. So now you admit McCain was wrong and displayed bad judgement, right?
Posted by: jackson | July 25, 2008 4:06 PM
What's that, Jackson? I can't hear you. The foot's lodged too squarely in your mouth. Nothing's getting out.
McCain was entirely right (and so was Obama according to you). We DIDN'T face house-house fighting in taking Baghdad. The entire op was over in weeks. McCain wasn't speaking at all about the insurgency there (and apparently neither was Obama). So good luck with your youtubes. As usual all you're doing is taking statements out of context.
So, now you admit your judgement is wrong and you're just taking statements out of context, right? Do you at least admit you displayed bad judgement by putting words in Obama's mouth? What's that? I still can't hear you. Have you tried choking the foot up?
Posted by: Jeff | July 25, 2008 5:12 PM
Jeff,
Nice spin. McCain was trying to sell a war. He didn't have the judgement to anticipate an insurgency. He gave the impression that everything would be groovey. So I'll humor you and accept that he was talking only about the invasion. Why did he not give us STRAIGHT TALK about the possibilty of an insurgency campaign of car bombs and roadside IEDs? That is much worse.

Bruce, 1, 2, and 3. With all of these I agree.

From Bruce's post: " After all, even Obama is smart enough to know that any paper he writes is likely to be made public. We all expect he wrote his "prayer" (or more accurately, had one of his staff compose the prayer) with an eye toward it being made public."
Who's "we"?
pfft.
George Bush has left prayers in the Western Wall. Does anyone have a link to their contents?
What, they weren't taken and passed out, even though hordes of press were there?
This was wrong, and unusual. Plain and simple.
And now people are trying to fault Obama as though this was some plan?
The desperation is palpable. And by supposed conservative 'christians' no less. God is ashamed of you.

A "private" prayer--photographed by the AP!
With Barack Hussein Obama wearing a scullcap, no less!
It's hard to imagine anything more offensive to God, and the Jewish religion, than a politician using the Wall for a campaign photo op. Has Obama no shame? Have his supporters, both inside and outside the media, no humanity?

pfft-there are so many of us, room does not permit.

Bad news for Jeff, Bruce et al.:
Many people believe Barack is an instrument of His will.
Posted by: ornery | July 25, 2008 9:34 PM
Why didn't Obama, Jackson? You just posted saying that he aped McCain's comments. You going back on that now? Whassamatta? Got foot-in-mouth disease again?
I, personally, already knew that such a thing would happen. I didn't McCain or anyone else to tell me. Neither did our commanders on the ground. And why would he say an insurgency would happen, anyway? Then again, I do know you're quite naive just like your candidate. You probably know very little about military history so I could see how you'd make the mistake ... the same way that you think Venezuela isn't in OPEC when they founded it. Amazing naivete on your part.

Hi Frank,
I see this blog is also cancer ridden with Blog Storming Reps (BSers)
What a world! Even on universal ideals they spew their party coordinated hateful innuendos, half-truths or outright lies. Soulless. Valueless. And I suspect Godless. Hell, some of them may even be Evangelicals (on Sundays).
Anyhow, pfft them all. Have to agree with You, JT and Billy.

So Jeff admits that McCain didn't tell the american people what he supposed knew would happen in Iraq. He told them a sugar coated version. What an awful admission by Jeff. Going to war is the most serious decision a country can make, and John McCain didn't feel that telling the whole truth about what he supposedly knew would happen in his support of it.
By the way Jeff, Obama did talk about the danger of a long insurgency BEFORE the war, unlike McCain who simply a lying schill by your won admission.
"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.
I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars."
Barrack Obama October 2, 2002.
It's too bad that John McCain didn't have either the judgement, the political courage, or the hionesty to make anything approaching a similar statement to the american people.

Bruce did you feel the same way when this guy brought his mob of reporters to the wailing wall? Where's the text of his prayer? Where is his shame? Where is his supporters humanity?

So Obama can't visit the Western Wall, leave a prayer, wear a Yamaka but McCain can? If the picture doesn't come through then Google it for yourselves.

Thank you so much for the link showing McCain visiting the wall. I don't know what to make of those who write but have no facts. Thank you for sharing. Obama' 08

It's interesting to see that the Obama-nuts here don't even try to defend Obama's campaign photo-op stunt at the Wailing Wall.
The Obama-nuts instead attack McCain for a McCain stop at the same Wall, earlier this year. But note that they don't link to any Swamp article on McCain's visit. That's because The DNC Swamp DIDN"T cover McCain's trip to Jerusalem. That's right--endless Swamp articles on Obama's visit to Israel, 0 articles on McCain's. Which proves my point about media bias in campaign coverage.

maybe this could be traced back to the KING DAVID. in any case, the stationery was probably not used coincidentally.
nor does it seem a coincidence that the 'prayer' seems to directly refer to psalm 122 that was read at the wall. which would further indicate it was all planned well ahead.

There's nothing to defend in Obama's visit to the wall Bruce, just as there was nothing to defend in McCain's visit. You have the double standard not us. You said it was shameless and showed a lack of humanity. So we all know for the future that YOU believe those very same things about John McCain. We'll make sure that you don't forget how shameless you think he is.
Posted by: JT | July 26, 2008 4:01 PM
Obama's visit to the wall was nothing but symbolic and should not have been made more of than that. Obama would not have used this as an opportunity to be disrespectful towards a nation of religious rituals.
