Florida's best-known bachelor, Gov. Charlie Crist, is getting married.
Crist on Thursday popped the question to his girlfriend of nine months, New York socialite Carole Rome, presenting her with a blue sapphire and diamond ring in his gulf-side condo in St. Petersburg.
"I'm very happy," Crist said Thursday evening. "I had a nice ring. It was very romantic. And she said `yes.'
No date has been set for the wedding. But Crist said the fall was the likely time -- in St. Petersburg, where he is a member of a Methodist church. A reception will probably also be held in Tallahassee, he said.
Crist, 51, said he managed to get down on one knee to propose, but it wasn't easy after his recent knee surgery. He's off crutches only a few days.
Rome, 38, is president of her family's century-old costume business. She has two children, ages 11 and 9, with former husband, New Yorker Todd Rome who is chief executive officer of Bluestar Jets. She lives in Miami, but will likely soon begin dividing her time between St. Petersburg and Tallahassee, Crist said.

Charlize Crist, Florida's best known "bachelor"
is marrying
Carole Beard, NY Socialite??
So he can run on the same ticket with John McC and Cindy Stepford???
Is Rush Limberg officiating at the wedding?? And what will be the party favors??
When the "wives" on this ticket meet, it'll be the most awkward moment for Repubbies since Nancy Reagan met Babs Bush.

Why do people assume a man is gay because he doesn't get married? Crist is caving in to get married because it's the thing all righteous, conservative Republicans should do. Just ask Rush Limbaugh, who can't keep a woman yet big mouths the world about conservative values, chief among which is having a wife (at home), two kids (boy and girl), and a house with a white picket fence around it (a 2 million dollar condo on North LSD will do.) Surely Crist's marriage after a long 9 month courtship can be seen as not just your average marriage of convenience. Rather, it's more like an arranged marriage by the Republican party. It comes complete with two kids. How nice. Just the sort of thing every normal, bachelor tired of being free to play the field, wants.

Cue the tasteless, disgusting comments from the liberals out there.
Congratulations Charlie and Carole.

It's open season, Jeff. Especially when these old birds try to outdo each other with their young chicks. He's marrying a photo op, party planner that will make him look good.

This guy will stop at nothing to get that VP spot.

Jeff, what's so tasteless and disgusting about a right wing, conservative, middle aged, bachelor, Republican governor spicing up his image with a young, rich woman with two young kids? It's not a liberal thing to say or do. It's Republicanistically conservative.

Another heiress! If McCain selects Crist, it will be a two-heiress ticket!
That's truly the American way!

I guess he will turn a new "page".

She might want to have a chat with Dina McGreevey before she says her vows.

Crist won't be the VP nominee, so if that's why he got married I hope they have a solid prenup. McCain will most likely pick Mitt Romney. Because Romney won in Michigan, Massachusetts, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Arkansas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Maine, Nevada and Wyoming. Also, Romney has a good grasp of the economy--which McCain lacks. And Romney is young.

I am a current FLA resident and I can say that this is just another ploy by Mr. Crist to get into the VP slot! He has done nothing for the state of FLA since he has been in the office of Gov. He has spent the last few months running around the country with McCain licking his boots. It is really a sad time to be a Florida resident. I feel sorry for this poor woman and her children because they are most certainly show ponys.

Governor Crist has a dapper, tanned, Sandy Koufax kind of look going on, and Ms. Rome could easily be a Pretty Tx Latina. Forget this vile politics stuff and just enjoy the moment.

django, i think he looks like harry shearer. but agree, rome is burning.

These posts kill me. Liberals, who are suppose to be all-accepting, seemed to have a sick and perverted focus on people's sexuality. If Crist is gay, so what? If he is not gay, so what?
But once again, the Left shows it's true hypocrisy. It's true bigotry.
Because Crist has been a bachelor for many years, the Left assumes he is gay and then makes fun of him.
Bigots, blow hards, idiots: qualifications to be a leftist.

I suppose a person could believe that when a 51 year old bachelor governor decides to wed shortly before vice-presidential picking season begins in earnest it is just a coincidence. I suppose a person could also believe in the tooth fairy.

For gosh sakes, leave the guy alone. He's been married and divorced and has fallen in love again. This must be jealousy! Why do they call him a bachelor? Shouldn't it be divorcee?

John D,
Only one of the above seventeen posts even mildly pokes fun at the Crist gay rumor. How do you use the term "posts" and "the Left" as if there is some kind of anti-gay plurality in any of the above.
And, as usual, you miss the general point. If Crist were gay, which it seems he is not, why would he not support same-sex marriage and gay adoption? If Ms. Rome were Mr. Rome, what harm comes from them getting married?

To coin a Seinfeld saying" not that there is anything wrong with that" ....you simply miss the humor in the whole thing. The right hates gays, yet they are ready to make one VP. Florida thinks Crist is gay. You should improve your Gaydar if you're going to be their enemy.
Posted by: bill r. | July 5, 2008 2:39 PM
Bill,
The right doesn't hate gays. They just don't think they should get special rights that other people don't get. Equal treatment for all. Not special exceptions or rules if you are afflicted with an attraction to people of the same sex.
