Never mind soccer moms, security moms and the bitter working class.
This is a question for pet owners.
And John McCain is Best in Show.
The pet-owning public may have caught on to the fact that McCain, like George Washington and George W. Bush, shares his home with a number of pets - more than a dozen, in McCain's case. Democrat Barack Obama, by contrast, is petless.
Among pet-owners, McCain has clawed his way to a marginal advantage; 42 percent supporting the Republican, 37 percent the Democrat, according to the results of an AP-Yahoo News poll (remember, it was Jonathan Swift who brought us the Yahoos.)
Among the petless, the poll found, Obama is favored by a rather solid margin of 48 to 34 percent.
Obama reportedly has promised his two daughters a dog once this campaign is over. If this poll is any indication of anything, the junior senator from Illinois may want to purchase that puppy before November.
"I think a person who owns a pet is a more compassionate person -- caring, giving, trustworthy. I like pet owners," Janet Taylor of Plymouth, Mass., explains.
The American Kennel Club's spokeswoman, Christina Duffney, suggests: "You usually connect with things that you're familiar with, so that could be a part of" as a reason for pet owners leaning toward McCain.
McCain has a veritable home zoo: Sam the English springer spaniel, Coco the mutt, turtles Cuff and Link, Oreo the black and white cat, a ferret, three parakeets and a tank of saltwater fish.
That places him in a certain majority: The American Pet Product Manufacturers Association estimates that 63 percent of American homes include a pet, including 88 million cats and 75 million dogs.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

These polls are stupid. When will the results from the poll conducted among those of us who fart in evevators come out? I would really like to know who we will vote for.

You sure the headline should not read "Obama had better go PASTOR shopping".

Obama will change his position on pets as he has on everything else.
"Change you can believe in."

Well, the Daley machine has him on a short lease, and he sometimes looks like Bambi caught in the headlights, so the pet and cute/cuddly/empty headed aspects are already in play.

It's like George Carlin said about pet ownership--something like--they live their lives on a different time scale--"You're taking home a little tragedy in the making. This will not end well."
At age 50 am now on my 6th cat!
I wish I'd just acquired a bird years ago!
All those pets McSame has---and the servants to manage them no doubt!

Overheard at Obama staff meeting after seeing this poll;
Quick, why kind of dog did JFK have?

Patience .., if Obama wins the election, we'll all be his pets.

If anyone (petowners or petlovers) in their right mind sees that a person just buys a pet for political reasons they've got to see that this just like all other promises is just a vote getting ploy. We need to look at what the person has done all along to see who he or she is. We shouldn't judge by what they are doing or saying now. For example, McCain already has been a good pet owner, O'bamma can't be bothered.

I own several pets, but if you believe that the schedule these politicians keep allows them to spend more than a smattering of time with the pets, then you are crazy.
Pets need time and attention. I have no doubt that McAcain's family and domestic help handle all of the pets care.
I doubt he could even name all of his pets.

I am a pet owner, and a Republican, but this article is just plain awful. Please people, for the love of God... I don't care who you're for, McCain or Obama, just don't be idiots like the people in this poll and pick our next president on whether he owns a pet or not...
This is why America is going down the toilet.
Posted by: Bkhwksam | July 8, 2008 10:09 AM
Why would you suggest he buy a puppy when there are thousands of perfectly adoptable dogs in shelters waiting for homes?
If Obama were to buy a dog, I would lose much faith in his social conscience.
Posted by: Jessica | July 8, 2008 10:11 AM
George Bush is a petowner, and the country's gone to the dogs under him. So voting for someone based on whether or not they own pets is for the birds, in my opinion.
I hope Senator Obama ignores these hare-brained polls and does what's right for his family and his future pet, which is to wait.

Well if he hasn't had a dog up until now and has newly acquired a multimillion dollar home.. maybe a dog isn't what they need..
I have had dogs all my life and have chewmarks on my antique furniture, carpeting that has been destroyed etc not to mention thousands of dollars in care (insurance, decent food, vet costs etc).
Having a dog is a bigger commitment than most Americans can handle and you can't "spin" your way our fip flop out of it.
Posted by: nick | July 8, 2008 10:21 AM
I'm more impressed by someone who realizes they don't have the proper time and attention to give to a puppy than someone who buys a bunch anyway and leaves them for the servants to take care of.
Posted by: Anne | July 8, 2008 10:32 AM
Wow I was not aware McCain had so many pets. I would say McCain's like a millitary German Shephard but with a Bloodhounds slow and steady feel, and Obama like a puppy Great Dane with a Pomeranian look-at-my-bushy-coat feel. If both did not have pets. I'd suggest an ostrich for McCain and a rat for Obama.

It is obvious you are only thinking with the "right" side of your mind. A family has the right to decide when or if a pet should be brought into a family. I would think someone who would wait till a child is old enough to understand the responsibility of owning a pet is a smart decision. On the other hand.....I have always found that households that just bring in over a dozen animals.....is a sandwich short of a picnic.

"For example, McCain already has been a good pet owner, O'bamma can't be bothered."
Huh? How much has McCain "bothered" with his pets? Do they travel back and forth from Arizona to DC with him? Does he take them on the campaign trail? Or does he just leave them home for other people to look after 90% of the time? You consider that "good" pet ownership? Typical Republican - you consider yourself a good citizen if you have enough money to just throw at something so you yourself don't have to be bothered to be personally involved.
By the way, Obama's name isn't that hard to spell correctly, even for a Republican.

Let's see if Obama is as socially conscious as he pledges. If he is, then he should know NOT to buy a dog but rescue a life!
There are 45 cats and dogs for every one person born.
Only one out of 10 dogs born ever finds a permanent home.
Only one out of 12 cats born ever find a permanent home.
800 dogs and cats are destroyed each HOUR in the U.S. because there are not enough homes for them!
Let's just see how he responds to those numbers?
Posted by: Tonya | July 8, 2008 10:40 AM
This kind of poll is absurd. A lot of presidents may have not have had pets, but that doesn't stop them from doing what we expect of them...
When News can't find anything better to report they go to this Drivel.

Even more reason to like him.

In your "concern" for adopting a pet (which I agree with), you somehow forgot to ask about McBushs' dozen pets. How so?
Posted by: bill "Hussein" r. | July 8, 2008 10:59 AM
Its obvious that Mr and Mrs Obama are not animal lovers. This is another reason why this man will never be president.
Posted by: brigitte | July 8, 2008 11:01 AM
It's common knowledge a "star" doesn't like sharing the stage with kids or animals.
Posted by: Virginia | July 8, 2008 11:36 AM
I think that the fact that Obama basically stated that he didnt have time to take care of a pet during his campaign is more responsible than taking in 12 of them. Someone who is basing their ballot on animal ownership clearly has not come to the conclusion that McCain probably hasnt seen any of his animals in months...not to mention that his collection of 12 animals is probably scattered amongst his 8 houses.
Stay away from the voting booth, Mark Silva.

The AP, source of this information, really stepped in it with this one. I mean, can you really believe that in a time where we're fighting a losing war, the economy's in recession and the nation's reputation is in the toilet, we're getting fluff pieces about PETS? McCain's poodles and kittens will not save the free world from economic decline and the menace of terrorism. Go thou forth and find something of substance to report, or else don't darken our doorstep with your frivolous reporting.

You meant slaves, right?
And we may have to eat our pets because there won't be enough food available due to all the ethanol production and him wanting to give 7% of the U.S. GDP to the U.N. so Robert Mugabe can eat well. Or maybe because of the 500 billion dollar Domestic Police force he wants to train and equip.
There are plenty of reasons to vote against Obama, the pet thing is kind of petty compared with the Marxist utopia he envisions, and the loss of freedom that accompanies it.

Lord have mercy - our country is in trouble. First of all, nowhere does it say that pet owners are voting for McCain only because he owns animals. It just happens that people asked in the poll are more aligned with his views. I'm certain he does know all his animals' names, and whether he personally feeds them and gives them water daily doesn't take away from the fact that he has given them a loving home. Goodness gracious! Y'all would criticize him even if he spent hours a day with each one.
I'm sure some people would choose to vote for McCain or Obama because of their pet status, just the same as people will vote for Obama because he promises universal health care or because he's a Democrat or because he's attractive, or because he's a good speaker or because he's black. On the other hand some will vote for McCain because he's a veteran, or because he's white, or because he's a man, or because he's a Republican. People will vote for a candidate for ridiculous reasons, and/or because of other people's opinions they read in newspapers or internet or heard at the water cooler, instead of understanding the issues. That is frightening. I hope I'm wrong, and just caught up in the media hype. If not, our country is in trouble.

JM American...Last time I checked Obama was only 1/2 black which would make him 1/2 white as well. Not too mention that he was raised by whites. Why couldn't black folks see that Hillary was just as much a black candidate as Obama is or is not for that matter??
Posted by: KC | July 9, 2008 11:59 PM
He should adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue group, but he shouldn't do it until they are all settled and finished campaigning. It would be traumatic for any pet to not have its new family around during the settling-in period.
Posted by: Leslie | July 10, 2008 1:56 PM
To KC: I can't answer your question. You may have to ask someone who is a staunch BO supporter. I have no feelings whatsoever about his race, or John McCain's either. The content of his speeches and his plan for the United States are what I base my opinion on and not if he has a dog, or any other characteristic. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.
Posted by: JM American | July 10, 2008 3:20 PM
Wasn't Hitler a dog lover?
Would you vote for him?
Posted by: Emore | July 11, 2008 8:31 AM
Simple.
Don't trust people that don't like dogs.
Two types of flawed logic in some of your comments. To say that everyone that likes dogs is "ok" is wrong.
Next define "like". Does that include dog fighters?
But if someone doesn't like dogs, you better watch out.
