Sen. Barack Obama has made no significant traction in gaining the support of white evangelical voters, while McCain's advantage is lower than Bush's lead at a similiar point in 2004, according to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.
About six-in-ten white evangelicals favor Sen. John McCain for president, compared to 25 percent for opponent Sen. Barack Obama, giving McCain a 36-point advantage. In 2004, Bush had a 43 point lead over his Democratic rival.
The 25-percent support for Obama is slightly lower than number of white evangelicals who supported Democratic candidates in June 2004 at 26 percent and June 2000 at 28 percent.
This group of voters also remains more undecided at this point in the election than in last two elections. About 12 percent say they do not know who they would vote for today.
Our friends at Top of the Ticket have more on the candidates and evangelical voters.

Any Good Christian should think twice before voting for Obama with his background--

The 40 percent of non-Hispanic Catholics credited to Obama in this report is at sharp contrast to the much fewer Catholic votes he received in the primary, just 30 percent in Pennsylvania. Pew reports the following on July 7: "Obama's troubles winning actual Catholic voters in the Democratic primaries suggest he might have problems in the general election--unsurprising, perhaps, given what Nat Hentoff has described as Obama's "extremism" on the abortion issue. Obama has opposed every effort to protect unborn human life, including the Supreme Court's upholding of the Partial-Birth
Abortion Ban Act." Some Catholics might be enamored with the image but when presented with his past record, things could change.

REPUBLICANS..who always say how much they are against abortion...have had pretty much total control for at least 6 of the last 8 years. SO WHY ARE THERE STILL ABORTIONS????? It seems to be something they drag out at election time to get votes from EVANGELICALS, then nothing is done!!! There are many important issues this time around...not the least of which is: we're heading for 3d world status people!!! If women want to have an abortion they'll FIND A WAY, WHETHER EVANGELICALS OR ANYONE ELSE LIKES IT!!!!!

Jeez, BO shot himself in the foot when he attached himself the "Reverend" Wright! He not only failed to win over Evangelicals, but he'll never escape from Wright's poisonous rhetoric.

"Good Christians" realize that NO ONE - INCLUDING THEM- IS PERFECT!!! JUST WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO IMPLY ABOUT HIS "BACKGROUND"???? JUST BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE A "CONVENTIONAL " UPBRINGING (LIKE YOU PROBABLY DID) DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S ANYTHING SINISTER ABOUT HIS BACKGROUND AS YOU WOULD LIKE US TO BELIEVE!!!!! YOU HOLIER-THAN-THOU PEOPLE ARE DOWNRIGHT DISGUSTING AND IF YOU THINK YOU'RE "SCORING POINTS" WITH GOD, I THINK YOU'RE IN FOR A RUDE AWAKENING!!!!!!

Someone lacking evangelical support would make me want to vote for him/her more. Evangelicals seem to vote mostly for any pug who happens to run. Forget the pug's total platform. Consistently, or in block formation, voting pug makes things easy for evangelicals--it doesn't appear they have to think too much this way. When one is so eager to move on to heaven (while leaving judgment or sexual hypocrisy in their wake on earth) why work or vote to keep the current natural world the best it can be?

They know the simple fact that McCain is the "BETTER" choice for president.

Isn't the order of the world pre-ordained by the bearded guy in the sky? Why wont the evangies just believe what they have been brainwashed to believe? Trust in your higher power and all will be ok, right? Why waste your time fighting the inevitable?

They made obama look like a saint, overlooking all his faults while making McCain look like a misfit....congrats CNN for another BIASED report.....anderson 360 is nothing more than a liberal outlet!!!!

I think McCain's numbers will increase as things progress closer to time. More people will take a good look at his religion of 20 years. A Muslim, ha, that's such a nothing issue, check out Black Liberation Theology his pastor based his sermons on, and tell me that is conventional Mary D.! I don't condem him for making his own choices in life (it's a free country), I hold him responsible for them, if he's wanting to be OUR LEADER.
Looking at a mans judgements he's made in his life, and being able to get a sense of what has played a strong roll in forming his values is important.

Thanks for the article, dt. It is nice to see that you have shown yourself to be an intolerant bigot. I find it amusing that pseudo-liberals' biggest hypocrisy is their claim to tolerance, except when it does not suit their secular religious beliefs to do so. Way to go.
