Many families of victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, are calling today on the presidential candidates to suspend "all partisan campaign activities'' on the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
MyGoodDeed.org, a nonprofit consortium backed by 9/11 family members and support organizations, today is urging Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama to stand down on Sept. 11.
The group has sent letters to both candidates, and plans letters to all congressional candidates as well.
"The anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks should forever remain a day of unity," says David Paine, president of MyGoodDeed.org.
"All of us, including those seeking public office, can best honor the memories of those lost by engaging in community service and other charitable acts on that day which help to recall and rekindle the remarkable spirit of unity and compassion that existed in our country in the weeks and months following the 9/11 tragedy,'' he says.
"9/11 helped us realize in an instant how insignificant our differences really are in comparison to our common goodness as human beings and our shared sense of compassion for those in need,"says Alice Hoagland, a MyGoodDeed.org board member who lost her son Mark Bingham in the crash of hijacked Flight 93.
"It hardly mattered what political party we supported, or whether we came from a red state or blue state,'' she says. "At that moment, we were all human beings, and it is important that we find a way each year on 9/11 to honor that spirit of togetherness and keep it alive."
MyGoodDeed.org is suggesting that, instead of typical campaign activity on 9/11, the candidates take the "day off" to perform services - but also speak "in nonpartisan terms about the importance of building a culture of national service in America throughout the year, not just on 9/11. ''
"As a 9/11 family member, the only good thing that came from that terrible day was the way our nation came together, however fleeting that moment might have been," says Monica Iken, founder of September's Mission, who lost her husband, Michael Patrick, at the World Trade Center.
"I cannot think of a better way to honor the memories of those lost than to put aside our differences for just a little while and consider what the world could be like if we preserved that sense of compassion and understanding at other times throughout the year."

I agree they shouldn't go after eachother personally, but I would like to hear BOTH of them speak to the event that took place. One of them will be our president and how they view the event and how they feel about the assault on our country.....well, more than a few of us would like to hear, especially on 911 anniversary. It's also my daughters b-day, and we celebrate her b-day just the same.

I have always believed that our nation was at its best after 9/11. I only wish we could bring that kind of love and loyalty to each other regardless of race, religion or politics everyday.

What is a propaganda organization, affiliated with the Department of Homeland Security, promoting an event that doesn't need promoting. Nobody is going to forget the horrific events of that day, so why is Homeland Security affiliated with this organization? I hope our government isn't financing this public relations gimmick, because I know the people of New Orleans, the people of Minnesota, the people of Florida and the people of California can all use those monies, however little they may be, to re-build their devastated communities. Once again, the Bush-Cheney administration has politicized the workings of our government, like the DOJ, and may be helping to promote an event that needs no help, in any shape or form, from our government. I hope it isn't the case, but, as we have seen in the past, this administration, this Republican administration, will use the 9/11 tragedy for almost any political advantage !! That, in and of itself, is about as low as any administration can stoop, but of course, we already know that, about this incompetent and untrustworthy administration.

I FOUND THIS**HERE ARE SOME OF THIS GROUPS COMMENTS>
"Clearly employers play a huge role in helping to promote community service interest, and until now many have been somewhat slow to understand the importance, value and appropriateness of providing employees with opportunities, whatever they may be, to remember and observe 9/11," Paine said. "This all comes down to helping them as well as individuals fill this void, which myGoodDeed.org can do. Otherwise, if we choose to do nothing, then nothing will happen. In the end this is simply a question of whether or not we think 9/11 is important enough in our history for us to remember it in a special way."
myGoodDeed.org (www.myGoodDeed.org) is a nonprofit initiative of One Day's Pay, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to establishing 9/11 as a national day of charitable service and good deeds. The group was formed shortly after the terrorist attacks by two friends, David Paine and Jay Winuk, who lost his brother Glenn J. Winuk in the collapse of the World Trade Center South Tower. The mission of myGoodDeed.org is supported by more than 20 leading 9/11 family member and support organizations, and by the United States Congress, which in 2004 unanimously passed H. Con. Res. 473 expressing the sense of Congress that 9/11 ought to be a nationally recognized day of voluntary service and good deeds. The group has formally requested that President George Bush designate 9/11 this year as a national day of charitable service and good deeds.

Don-I'm Republican, and I don't agree with this group at all. I don't like the nasty way they worded their comments about companies not cooperating with this groups ideas to have them make individual allowances for people working there to acknowledge a situation that happened SEVEN YEARS AGO> this groups attempt to come in and tell us ALL that we have NOT morned this already or in the way they feel we should be, and that we need THEM to help us know how to do it, as if we are confused. ..... I find their whole approach condescending....much in the way I find Obama's Universal Volunteerism.
I don't respect them using our political election to get their foot in the door on what they are wanting to push on us.
MORE THAN ANYTHING> I don't want a constant reminder of 911. I think this country went thru HELL and most of us are glad to have it past us.
It's already a day we all recognize, lets let everyone handle their feelings on it in their own way. I plan to send this letter to McCain as well.

This group was founded in 2003-they are supported by American express co., Ambac Financial corp, Sony corp, Keefe Bruyett and Woods, AOL, Google and Yahoo. I saw no Govt money involved. ****HERE'S the part you might like>NY Senators Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer are among those on the advisory board of Good Deeds. I saw no Govt money involved.
The comment at the top of their web page says>Changing the world one good deed at a time.
They have a list of sites they support, the one I found curious had this on it>Grants for environmental and social justice advocacy for activists aged 16-22 from Earth Island Institute
Earth Island Institute is proud to give Bower Youth Awards each year to six young people, ages 16-22, for their outstanding leadership, activism, and achievements in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy.
According to Wickapedia they say that Earth Island Institute have enjoyed significant success: a consumer-led boycott resulted in 100% of American tuna becoming dolphin safe.[2] The Earth Island Institute also provides dolphin safe certification for canned tuna producers.
The Mangrove Action Project was originally part of the Earth Island Institute, but was spun off as a separate organization in March 2007
