The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, a new book about Barack Obama that contends, among other things, that the junior senator from Illinois has a secret, radical Islamic agenda, has hit the top of the New York Times Aug. 17 best-seller list as well as Amazon.com's most popular nonfiction list.

Author Jerome Corsi has a track record in attacking Democratic presidential candidates with "murky claims,'' the Ticket notes. In 2004 he published Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, another New York Times best-seller.

The Obama Nation (the photo here courtesy of Simon and Schuster) "stokes all the favorite Obama-related conspiracy theories. It claims he has socialist connections and says he espouses the "black liberation theology" of Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Obama has vigorously denied both claims.''

The McCain/Republican slime machine is in full gear. They will tell any lie and spread any unfounded rumor. John McCain has surrendered his honor. He is a good man no more. He stands with the worst that politics in this country have to offer, lobbyists who promote dictators and slander artists like Corsi.

McCain could regain some part of his honor, by publically rejecting this book, it's author, and the tactics it represents. He won't. He approves. It's his new style. He's set on taking the lowest possible road.


As a historian I have a problem with any books written on any current political leaders such as Obama or Mccain. They tend to be love or hate books. The author always seems to have a political agenda and the leader he or she is writing about is either the best thing since sliced bread or the worst leader to come along in decades. Only books written 20 years or more from now by historians will give us a better picture of a particular leader and how their policies and programs played out. These current books are political propaganda.


Bias again. You immediately attack the accuracy of the anti-Obama book but in a separate article say nothing about inaccuracies in the books attacking the Bush administration. You flatly say in bold type that Obama is a Christian. Your source? Obama himself, of course. But you truly only know he SAYS he's a Christian. Maybe he is, but you really only have his word for it. And the fact that he once (no longer) belonged to a Christian church is hardly a verification, just as attending a Sox game doesn't make you a member of the team.


Lying and the McCain Plan,

McCain/Rove are quickly hobbling together a multi-faceted campaign of bold-faced lies. From false national TV ads to clandestinely sponsored internet rumors to full-length books, the materials start out with one goal and are crafted with one intent - to lie, lie, lie.

McCain is despicable. I hope to God we don't get another person in office who is as comfortable with bold-faced lies as our current president. Does any really believe that is in our best interest?


So Obama is a Christian because he tells us he is? Is that the only requirement? Someone needs to research what it means to be a Christian. Sitting through rants by the likes of Rev. Wright don't seem to jive with my understanding of Chirstianity but I could be wrong.


How dare anyone publish a book critical of Obama. How dare those millions of Americans who are reading it have the right to do so. When Obama wins, we won't have to worry about independent thought anymore. Pass the kool-aid.


Norton, you're right. Take McCain for example. He claims he's a Christian, but we really know he's a Satan worshipping pagan. No one can prove he isn't. We all klnow that he's part of a secret Panamanian (Has anyone seen his birth certificate?) strategy to turn the US into haven for devil worship.


This book only confirms what most of America already know -- that Obama is a smug, smirking con man. Nothing more. He and his hard-left coalition will be defeated by intelligent, decent and caring Americans everywhere.


Norton, you're wrong on two accounts. As a Chicagoan, and as a Sox fan, I can tell you that I wouldn't step foot in that decrepit building known as Wrigley Field. I have many friends who are Cubs fans who feel the same about going to see the Sox play. So the fact that Obama goes to Sox games in this city does make him a Sox fan. As for one's religion, obviously you are not a Christian, for I only have your word on it. And obviously one's own word on their religion, according to you, is worthless.


Oh the crying about "guilt by association" game. When the Rev. Wright, Tony Rezko, Michael Ayers, Fr. Pleger?, Ludacris, Bernie Mac, Farrakan (more could be included) became political poison to Sen. Obama, his immediate response was "These peole do not represent me". Fair statement. But just look at the mindset of the Obamabots - "The McCain/Republican slime machine is in full gear. Sen. McCain did not write that book so why lay this at his feet? Sen. Obama does not rule Moveon.org does he? Should Sen. Obama be responsible for every dirty, deceptive piece of slime coming from Moveon.org? Which way does the Obama campaign want to go - both ways it seems.

Why are you running ads for something that you know is a pack of lies?

Will your reporters spend more hours to counter these smears, using whatever sheckles you've earned from promoting this propaganda?

I believe there is a lot of truth in the information for this book. He has facts to back up his statements. Obama IS the most far left liberal senator we have. He IS the Senator for the state of Illinois and has done NOTHING here. He WAS associated with a frightening bigoted preacher for 20 years. Read this book - if you want to pay less taxes and have the economy continue to grow.

And we truly only know that the author of the book SAYS he's a radical Islamic. How do we know it's true? You can talk about the supposedly "islamic" school of his childhood, but as you noted, going to an institution doesn't mean you're a follower of its religion.

I agree this story is biased, but that doesn't mean the book is any less biased, either. It sounds like the author is doing whatever it takes to make a buck.


Is there a point Norton? McCain always said he was an Episcopalian, then this year said he's really a Baptist; he might be a Muslim for all we know; but there's no religious test for the office.

What does that mean? What is the litmus test for Christianity? How does anyone prove he or she is a Christian? And is it really Christian to disparage a person for claiming to be Christian? Is it really Christian to disparage a person for claiming to belong to any faith?

I don't know your religious affiliation, and that is irrelevant for our discussion. Perhaps you recall the question that pops up in churches from time to time, "If you were on trial for being Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?"

Would any of us? That is a wonderful, personal question all of us who call ourselves Christians should reflect on from time to time. It is not a question for media attacks -- by so-called Christians.

How do we know McCain is not a Devil Worshiper? I think Obama word is more credible than some writer out to make a buck with his book. Also remeber 99% of Muslims are not terrorist.


McCain is a Christian because he tell us? Promoting wars and dropping bombs doesn't sound like something Christ would do. Supporting economic policies that harm the poor doesn't sound like something Christ would do. Cheating on his disabled wife doesn't sound like a very Christ like act to me.

Is John McCain really a Christian? That's not for any of us to judge, now is it.


It's a shame that we give so much importance and financing to books like this. Of course, if there were no demand (or hype to create demand) there would be no supply.


I am reading “The Case Against Barack Obama”, and the book does a pretty good job exposing Obama’s connections to people like John and Todd Stroger, Emil Jones, and the rest of the Chicago Machine. If anything, it shows that Obama is anything but a Reformer. He’s just another typical Chicago politician, nothing more, nothing less.


Unless Obama starts attacking McCain's negative ads, and attacks negative nonsense like this book, he is going to lose this election. American people haven't changed since 2004 when they re-elected Bush.

It's serious enough business that we should dismiss this kind of garbage out of hand. Really, if Corsi and the rest of the Republican machine loved America as much as they love power, this pack of lies and so many others just like it would never be produced. But they don't. They love power more.

I think it's a huge joke, personally, how people claim Obama is such a phenomenal figure when he has no worthy experience, just makes good speeches. This whole Sox game thing, I am a die-hard Cubs fan, but since Sox tickets are dirt-cheap (Mr. 2005 World Series blah) I might go see them play. So, using that as a cause and effect explanation for his claim to be Christian is like me saying I feel like being Buddhist today because it seems easier. You guys need to untwist your undies and relax. It's politics, it's always going to be nasty. Quit whining and groaning about it, you're not their mommies. You are no conservative. Obamas' beliefs and voting history run counter to any conservative value that you never had. I'm no big fan of McCain myself, but I'll support him because my disgust for liberals overrides any preference I had for other Republican candidates.


Sorry Depot Jim, reading the historical picture of Obam 20 years from now will be too late. We will already know what kind of a person he "was" from experience, whether it be good or bad. We need to read "all" that there is about him "now" and make a decision from whatever is available at the present time. By the way, even historians have been known to report history in a biased light.

Aren't there pro-Obama books out there? (rhetorical - there certainly are) Should all of what's in those books be taken as gospel? No - but - if someone wanted to get a full definition of this candidate, then they should be read - with a grain of salt.

The same is true of the anti-Obama books. They should not be dismissed out of hand simply because they aren't flattering - any more than the flattering books should be wholly adopted simply because they are _not_ negative.

Until ppl on both sides stop this myopic and polarizing "anything i don't like is all wrong & everything i do like is all right" then we will never advance beyond labels like "neocon" or "BDS sufferer".

IMO, as objectively as I can make it - the only agenda issue that conerns me are the words that actually come from Obama's mouth.

When it comes to domesitc politics, I don't like it. Oh, I like the *idea* of what Obama says, but I don't like how he plans, or lacks plans to do these things. I saw an ad during the Olympics where Obama pledged to create 5 million more jobs. How could he do this? The ad doesn't say, but it certainly won't be through higher taxes on corporation who would then need to cut costs.

When it comes to international relations, and - given the state of the world today - I rate this as more important than domesitic policy issues, Obama - well, he scares me.

Herbie, the point is that if you have no knowledge of him, and it's not your job to verify his religion, who made it your job to question his religion? Who made it Corsi's job to not only question his religion, but to state that his religion is different than what he says? Do you question McCain's religious beliefs? May believed George W. Bush was a Christian because he said so. Boy were we mislead on that one.


Forget the religion. Catholic, Jew, Baptist, Islam, Budist, really is not the point. Corruption and the revealing of the Chicago Combine's ties to Sen. Obama is real and is scarey. There's no hiding how he made his bones in Chicago politics and just who this man is beholding to. Who have been his political sponsors and benefactors these last 15 years? I don't have to read this book to know these things. I've read these things for years, these truth's about Sen. Obama.

So what, he wrote books about his upbringing and mentoring from the Rev's Wright and Pleger (?) as spiritual advisors and mentors. So what he helped crooked Tony Rezko get rich off of low-income housing developments in and out of his senate district funded with state funds. So what he hangs with the likes of Michael Ayer and Louis Farrakan. So who cares that he looks to Emil Jones as a father figure. People outside of Illinois and unfortunately many Illinoisans, haven't heard the truth's of the Rise to Stardom. All they see is the celebrity of the man, the smooth talk of the orator, the promises of change (what exactly) and unity of mankind throughout the World!

People want to believe in a "higher" being, thus the various religions of the world and their faithful followers who believe only in "thier" religion, all other's being fake. Some to the extent of violence against those who do not believe.

What is most astounding is the lengths that Obama went to in order to forge alliances with unrepetant terrorists like Dohrn and Ayers, and other America-haters and racists like Jeremiah Wright over the last 25 years. Obama clearly shares the views of these folks -- he sought out their counsel and has maintained close relationships with them for more than two decades. Obama is one of the most divisive and contrived candidates to slide down the garbage chute in years.


Notron, where did I question his religion? For the tenth time, I don't know him, and it is not up to me to speak about his religious beliefs. I just think it is bizarre how Obama supporters are so paranoid and sensitive about this issue, that they expect people who know nothing about Obama to verify that he is a Christian. As for McCain being accused of being a Muslim, he would laugh it off, tell you to get a life, and not think of it again. That is what Obama should have done long ago.

Not just these broad general denial statements, but specifically refute what it is he doesn't agree with. If it's not true then one shouldn't have any trouble defending themselves. John Kerry was "swifted boated", but you know I do not recall any effective refuting of the contents of that book. One has to assume there may be truth in such offerings unless they are effectively responded to by the subject, Kerry didn't and he lost the election (in part due to that book), Obama needs to, if he can or he may lose as well.


bemused. Obama is an independant thinker so I don't think his presidency would end that. I would say this Bush administration has done a good job at ending indepandant thought. If you don't agree with this administration, you are anti-American and don't support the troops. It's ridiculous and ignorant to assert that Obama will end independant thought.

I'm sure it could be that you just want the rumours to spread and be believed, could it? It couldn't be that you want McCain to benefit from out right lies, could it?


The only criteria for being a born-again Christian is to have a testimony, which Obama has given publicly. Maybe that's not good enough for Norton, but it's good enough for God.


Notron, I don't know what the best plan for Obama is, nor do I really care. I would assume it doesn't involve removing Muslim women from the backgrounds of his speeches, or cutting loose campaign volunteers at the slightest hint of them being affiliated with extremists. I think his campaign's paranoia on this issue makes it worse.

As opposed to Bush, who cultivates friendships with bigots like Hagee, and war criminals like Cheney and Rumsfeld, and just plain old criminals like Abramoff and Gonzalez.


James - yours are the kind of judgemental leaps of conculsions that are so divisive. I seriously doubt that you have read the book. But - then again - why should I be surprised that a plea for a fair discussion falls on the deaf ears of someone who labels someone a criminal when they have not yet been charged or completed a judiciary process?

Jeepers, how soon we forget, Obama had to beat a guy from Chicago in the primary for Senate and was opposed by the "Chicago machine", so that makes Obama the Chicago "indebted" to the machine guy. Almost sounds as original as saying Obama can't be President because he is popular here and around the world so that disqualifies him. Wait the nitwits ARE saying that, go figure...

Clearly, it is the End Days of the Representative Republic formerly known as the United States of America. The country will perish, crushed under the weight of its own stupidity. Finish her off - McCain in '08.


Why does Obama, or anyone else, including Sen. McCain, have to respond to lies? The strategy of the Rovian powermongers is to fill the airwaves with a cacophony of lies and distortions, drowning out anything else. There are so many lies out there that a response to each one, in a timely manner, just isn't possible. If you don't respond, you're some sort of coward, and if you do respond, you don't have the time to do anything else. Either way, you lose. That's the strategy. And BTW-- all of those "bestsellers" are just being purchased by the same people, over and over, and often by the publishers themselves. But, you know, each purchaser gets one vote, no matter how many books are sold. A million books is a lot; a million votes not really, especially since every purchaser of these books would vote for McCain whether or not these books were even ever written. Just like Fox News-- nearly every Fox viewer (87%) will vote for McCain, which makes Fox News the very definition of irrelevant. These books are the same-- irrelevant by definition.


"If he walks like a duck, and talks like a duck", and attends church for many years under a pastor who honors Farrakahn as a hero; then he flip-flops and denounces him when exposed for his prior loyalty--then he surely must be a duck. (Literally)
