Barack Obama: I only have one house: The Swamp

The Swamp

by John McCormick, updated

CHESTER, Va. - Sen. Barack Obama today painted Sen. John McCain as a defender of the rich who is so out of touch on economic matters that he does not even know how many homes he owns.

It is a theme the Illinois Democrat is reinforcing with a new television ad called "Seven" running on national cable channels.

Standing under towering pine trees with Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine at his side, Obama used a McCain interview with Politico on Wednesday to make his point as he spoke to a small audience outside a community college.

"Somebody asked John McCain how many houses do you have? And he said, I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my staff," Obama said. "True quote: 'I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my staff.'"

The actual quote, according to Politico, went this way:

"I think -- I'll have my staff get to you," McCain said. "It's condominiums where -- I'll have them get to you."

The correct answer is at least four, according to Politico, which also said Newsweek this summer estimated that McCain and his wife, Cindy, own seven.

Obama continued: "So they asked his staff, and he said, at least four. At least four. Now, think about that."

Obama also recycled an attack he used earlier this week, citing a comment McCain made last weekend where he defined "rich" as people making more than $5 million, a statement he quickly tried to correct.

"I guess if you think that being rich means you've got to make $5 million, and if you don't know how many houses you have, then it's not surprising that you might think the economy was fundamentally strong," Obama said. "But if you're like me, and you've got one house, or you are like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so they don't lose their home, you might have a different perspective."

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded with a statement pointing to Obama's own increasingly comfortable life.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" Roger said. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

Rogers said Obama plans are wrong for most Americans.

"The reality is that Barack Obama's plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he's completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans," he said.

Obama is traveling today with Kaine, who is believed to be among the finalists for his running mate. The two men met this morning at Obama's hotel for about 15 minutes, campaign aides said.

The Illinois Democrat is expected to announce his pick still this week, before appearing with that person Saturday in Springfield, Ill.

And Tony Rezko helped buy it! I love your foot-in-mouth candidate!

Yes, Obama has just one house. A mansion that he was assisted in buying by the convicted Tony Rezko, another "friend" like the terrorists Ayers and Dohrn. How proud Obama is of his "one house."

How many houses does John McCain Have? It doesn't matter. All you have to do is kick your wife to the curb and hook up with a beer heiress.

What a guy!

The Rezko twins arise again. Tell me "boys", what were the charges? What happened with "Keating". Your foot in mouth supporters delight me.

McCain has 7 to 10 homes... he's not sure how many, $500 shoes, a wife worth $100 million, and yet his supporters refer to Obama as "elite." What a world.

In one brief gaffe, there goes millions of dollars worth of celebrity ads down the tubes.

And just in time to be driven home over and over again at the Democratic Convention.

haha, rezko didn't help. KEATING FIVE and JACK ABRAMOFF helped. as did Phill UBS/Subprime meltdown Gramm and his wife Wendy ENRON Gramm.

Bush showed to have 9-26 mil
Obama 4 mil
McCain 15-20mil
Gore just before nobel-100mil
Kerry 165-mil
Oprah 1 Bil
****************************
Sorry, Oprah wins this one boys!

Roger said. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula...."
Like I keep saying the best argument the Republicans have that doesn't involve smears, innuendo or personal attacks is that Obama knows what arugula is. What is John McCain's 100 day plan? Rezko's crimes are not Obama's crimes, pathetic fools. I'm sure you nitwits would've paid the highest price possible for Obama's home, instead of looking for a deal like he did.

How one comes by their home is important.

It is LEGAL to spend inherited money on homes. There is nothing questionable about that.

What is questionable is having Tony Resko's wife do a land deal with the Obama, in which Obama LATER admitted it was a "boneheaded mistake".

Rather have a clear deal than a clouded deal, like Obama's.

People who live in Rezko-financed, sweetheart mortgage financed mansions should not throw stones.

And while mansion luxury is fine for Obama, his own brotehr lives in squalor.

As reported in the London Telegraph, Barack Obama's half-brother, George Hussein Onyango Obama, lives in a dollar-a-month hut outside Nairobi, Kenya. George has only met his half brother twice, the last time on the New Messiah's junket to Kenya in 2005.

Despite Barack Obama's millions, and despite his pledges to end poverty everywhere in the world, Obama has not lifted a finger to help out his own brother out of poverty. Yet another window into the empty suit's lack of character.

The story, which Swamp reporters somehow missed during Obama's trip to Kenya, can be seen at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/barackobama/2590614/Barack-Obamas-lost-brother-found-in-Kenya.html

I'll be curious to see what the Obama's own in 30 years. You can bet they won't be living in Chicago. Chicago has served its purpose, you can bet they'll be living on either coast or Hawaii with the beautiful people. The Obama's are in their 40s they just bought their first home - the McCains have had a bit more time to acquire some assets. Perhaps Obama should be more concerned about the half-brother living in a shack and on a dollar a month, he preaches on helping the unfortunate - he should start with his own half brother, what a hypocrite!

The point that we all should be concerned about is that John McCain CAN'T REMEMBER how many houses he owns! Even if I was married to a beer heiress and came by all of my homes as a result, I would still remember how many houses I own. If McCain has to have his staff keep track of how many homes he owns, how is going to keep track of the many more important issues facing the country. This is alarming!! People are actually planning to vote for McCain who is showing clear signs of diminished mental capacity.

I think this is a big mistake for Obama. yes, he may own only one house, but it's a mansion. He has a VERY comfortable lifestyle. And voters are smart enough to know that.

All those screaming "Rezko, Rezko" need to go look up their man McCain's ties to Donald Diamond before they continue to spout off about Obama's completely legal land deal.

This line of attack panics the Republicans, which is why they are freaking out over Obama's new ad and comments on the stump.

McCain's lifestyle is much, much more out of touch with college educated, hard working professionals in most major urban areas of the country than Obama's is. McCain admittedly dumped his first wife for the beer heiress to gain his wealth. I'm sick of the POW tear jerker story. I am a vet and most vets that I know don't fall for the tired 30 year old story.

Whoever you support, it has to be embarrassing to see your candidate or his supporters get into an argument as stupid as this one.

Every major-party presidential candidate is wealthy. We don't have to like it, but it's hardly a valid point for either campaign. I'd even go a step further and say every major candidate has a pretty good ego, they've all changed their positions on some issue at some point, and they've all associated with some unsavory people to get where they are.

With that out of the way, can we find something better to argue about?

Quippy, claiming McCain has diminished capacity when he whipped your guy's butt at Saddleback about a week ago is pretty amusing. Obama strains to put five words together to put together a complete sentence. I don't care if he has 15 houses as long as he makes it to the White House!

Rezko, Rezko, Rezko. Wow, should we look into McCain's friendships? How about his professional ones? Keating Five, anyone? At least Obama didn't finish 894 out of 899 in his class. See plenty more reasons to vote against John McCain at http://www.billpress.com/McCain101/

McCain is a gaffe waiting to happen. He also supposedly did not know that his wife was addicted to drugs. He is certainly ready to bring the third Bush term to the White House with his trademark response: "I do not recall."

Good for you Barack! These out of touch Republicans need to be exposed for the hypocrites they are. Because of the way Republicans are constantly pulling the wool over the eyes of thier constituants, I ask you. Why would anyone living in this country making a modest to low income salary support the Republican party? Could it be stupidity? Could it be they're trying to pretend they have more money than it seems, or is it just ignorance? I think it's both!

Quippy,

You saw the forest for the condos. As you point out, and I agree with, the issue is that McCain's memory isn't up to the task of being president.

His non-grasp of the facts/memory is the overriding issue here. In 1986 Ronbo's senior staff actually considered invoking the 25th Amendment for involuntary removal of the president when Ronbo was losing it. Unfortunately for Ronbo, it was the beginning symptoms of Alzheimers.

Health, character, policies, - John McCain isn't qualified to be president.

Dumb Question, but if he only has one home, how can he split time between Washington and Chicago? Aren't US Senators required to maintain residences in their home state? And don't most of them have at least 2 homes? So if his one home is in Chicago, where does the family live when they're in Washington, which is most of the year?

Obama wants to define "rich" people at a much lower income level so that he can tax more people. His plan is to cast as wide of a net of tax payers as possible. Obama's "change" we can believe in, apparently referring to the change in size of tax payers' wallets.

Obama only has one house and his oldest and longest fundraiser helped him get it. It is probably a bad idea to bring up a house that you got by trading favors with a felon who was convicted for corruption. Obama helped Rezko get $14 mill in state funding for projects in Obamas district. Obama wrote letters helping Rezko get those contracts and he paid Obama back by helping him pay $300,000 less for a mansion in Hyde Park. I would probably keep as much attention away from my shady real estate deals as possible if I were Obama. I will never understand why some peopel act like being rich is a bad thing. People whop attack others for being rich are just jealous and are just looking to blame someone else for their own personal failures in life. This deal is similar to Obama requesting millions for his wife's employer and then not coincidentally his wife gets a 300% raise a few weeks later. For those who live outside IL this is very common here. It is called pay to play and Obama has engaged in this just like every other Cook County Machine Hack.

McCain = More war and a new draft

Do we really want more war? Do you want your children or friends drafted and sent to war?

I know I don't.

Rezko?! That's the best you can come up with? Obama made a legal purchase of his home.
Let's get the issues. The issue here is that McCain has noo idea what middle class American's are going through right now. Is he forclosing on any of his 7 houses? Is he having to decide which to buy gas or medicine? Seriously, stop talking about things that just don't matter and start talking about the issues. Everybody is upset about the terrible job Bush has done the last 8 years, but instead of looking at the issues everyone just talks a bunch of crap about totally irrelevant information. I love politics, but come on.... The U.S. looks like a bunch of stupid fools to the entire world for how elect our leaders. It's absolutely ridiculous.

One of the many reasons that good people won't run for political office is this inane "pundit" play about their houses, money, cars, etc.

Let's focus on the real issues, such as who has a plan to resolve our massive deficit and financial quandary.

With that out of the way, can we find something better to argue about?

Posted by: sarcastic teenager | August 21, 2008 1:43 PM

While I agree with you in principle......I have to ask, what about the Paris ad...the tire guage ad...or the outright lie of raising taxes on middle and lower income families...it seems to me we have been brought to this by the Karl Rove politics of the right. Unfortunately..you must counter them as we found with Kerry. By the way...they had no trouble what so ever attacking the service of a veteran.

Dear Rupert--you made a sarcastic remark about those who refer to Obama as "elite." Elite refers to one's background. There is a common thread defining "elite"--east coast educated, eschewing a job straight out of college with a top firm to do community service, associating with elitists who live predominently on the east or west coast.... Ask yourself whom Obama was talking to, in San Francisco, when he made his remarks about folks who cling to guns and religion. Ask yourself whom Bill and Hillary hung out with at Martha's Vineyard for all of their "retreats" there. Ask yourself whom in the republican party George H.W. Bush offended when he sided with Barry Goldwater at the time he started to create the modern republican party in TX.

Got to agree with 'sarcastic teenager.' We have more comments on this and the traffic jam, than for the stories about health care and Russia.

AND LOOK HOW HE GOT IT-

Ryan, have you looked at the two candidates' tax plans, or do you just quote the Limbaugh line? Obama is for raising taxes ONLY on the the wealthiest of Americans. I believe a rundown of the two plans was in this paper about a month ago. Instead of spouting the same GOPer party line, do some research and come up with something true.

Yes, I live in Chicago. No, Obama's house is not a mansion. No, Rezko did not help him buy the house; he only sold the adjoining land next to it higher than the amount Rezko paid for it. Yes, McCain, his wife, and his beer executive son are worth over $100 million. And yes, Obama made his money through book sales. Why can't we deal in the truth?

Another false step by the Messiah. All this does is bring up Rezko, Rezko, Rezko........

DQ, when Obama is in Washington, he rents an apartment in a townhouse. His family stays in Chicago. This is from, of all places, Fox News (so even neocons have to admit it's true):

WASHINGTON — A Capitol Hill house where Sen. Barack Obama rents an apartment caught on fire Sunday, but a spokesman said the Democratic presidential contender was out of town to celebrate Father's Day.

The fire appeared to be on the third floor of a townhouse in northeast Washington, and was likely caused by an old fan that had malfunctioned, said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs. Obama rents an apartment on the second floor, Gibbs said.

Obama, D-Ill., was with his family in Chicago on Sunday, Father's Day, Gibbs said.

The D.C. fire department did not have an immediate comment.

If you want to dig up dirt, at least make an effort to dig up the truth.

jackson, Sen. McCains staff will have his policy book available for purchase for just $13.95 any day now. You can run to Barnes & Noble to get your copy and see what the first 100 dyas will look like!

Oh, sorry, that was Sen. Obama whose staff have completed his new policy book that will be on sale for just $13.95 at a book store near you. Heck, I'll get to see what his first 100 days will look like. Marvelous! I'll have my five year old read it and give me a report.

What about John McCain and his knee jerk responses on reinstituting the draft. He has hinted at this more than once. He is a war lover and wouldn't think twice about taking part in another war... Russia? And using our children to do it.

"The correct answer is at least four...."

- John McCormick

Okay. If John McCormick is going to call Barack Obama on "exact" quotes, he needs to be called out on this statement.

If McCain owns MORE than 4, than the "correct" answer isn't an "exact" answer. And that's the point of Obama's remark - that McCain doesn't know exactly how many homes he owns.

That's outrageous, number 1. Number 2, it points out how out of touch he is with REGULAR Americans.

So John McCormick, wait until you have an EXACT answer before calling Obama to task for not having the EXACT quote.

This bears repeating: Obama strains to put five words together to form a complete sentence.

Obama is grasping. And it's so much fun to watch. Can the Obama kids taste a loss in November yet? You will. Soon.

K-Los wrote: "No, Obama's house is not a mansion."

Of course it's not a mansion! Good Lord! The wine cellar only holds 1,000 bottles! And there are only four fireplaces!

http://nyenevada.blogspot.com/2008/01/obamas-house.html

They are all rich. What is the difference between the number of houses? Rich is Rich is Rich. When Obama is 30 years older you can bet he will have more homes. How about the homes owned by any of the other prominent Democrats? Should you not vote for them in the future because they have more than one home? They all have money and most have more than one home. Same for the Republicans. Both sides would love for you to believe they are regular folk but they are not. The fact they keep bringing it up as if we will fall for it again would be hilarious but for the fact people do fall for it.

What has happened to the "new kind" of politician who is against the politics of personal destruction? The birds used to sing when Obama walked down the sidewalk. The oceans would recede each time he smiled. With each passing day, the "magic" of Obama is washing away and being replaced by the reality of a politician who will do and say anything to try and flirt and smirk his way into higher office. So much for "change." LOL

It's no wonder this country is in the horrible shape it's in. THIS is the level of the discussion.

If only we had a brain...

Here's the Main Stream Media (MSM) take on this:

John McCain's wife owns 8 houses: He manages to remain a maverick(tm) and a man of the people despite having married into such wealth.

Barack Obama owns one house: He OWNS instead of RENTING??? How ELITIST!!!

House(s) -- just another distraction from real issues.

The three most important issues facing us now are:

1. Global warming
2. Water
3. Infectious disease

The electorate fails to grasp the truly enormous economic impact of ignoring these three issues. But because tackling these requires real vision, it IS easier to excite voter subclasses with guns and religion. Too bad Obama failed to articulate his point so succinctly.

Dave

Oh, how we love George W. McCain.

Americans are can-do people and always will be. While McCain touts the success of the surge in Iraq, Obama downplays it. While McCain pushes for more domestic oil exploration to grow the economy, Obama rants about windfall profits. It's Obama who is out of touch with middle America. The more Americans get to know Obama, the less we like him.

Point McCain advisor: "yeah, but it's a frickin mansion."

Ryan, have you looked at the two candidates' tax plans, or do you just quote the Limbaugh line? Obama is for raising taxes ONLY on the the wealthiest of Americans. The problem here is how Obama defines the "wealthiest" Americans. You'd be surprised to see how many people are classifed as "rich" using Obama's definition.

Here are the facts. The Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan policy group in Washington DC, released a report on June 11, 2008 comparing McCain and Obama's tax policies. According to the report, under McCain's tax policy, compared with their tax bill today, taxpayers on average would see their tax bill cut by nearly $1,200. That means their after-tax income would RISE by 2%. Under Obama's tax policy, taxpayers on average would see their tax bill cut by nearly $160. That means their after-tax income would RISE by 0.3%.

The choice is clear. Obama will tax you more, comparing with McCain.

Hope this is the truth that you're looking for Deezer.

First off, what a pile of nonsense the number of homes McCain and his wife have. I don't recall the media or the Loons on the Left making an issue of all the homes John Kerry lived in with his his rich wife, who became rich because her husband, John Heinz, died in a plane crash.
Second, does Obambi really want to get into homes? As many have pointed out, there are lots of questions about that home and land deal with the CONVICTED felon Tony Rezko. I can see the McCain ads now.

Also, if McCain said something like this, the corrupt media would call it an AATTACK by McCain on Obambi. Hmmm, somehow, though, this is not an attack by Obambi on McCain??

At least McCain knows how many states are in the U.S.

Politicians who live in glass houses (especially if he doesn't know how many he has) should not throw stones.

Prediction.

BO's VP choice will be wealthy, have several houses and never served in the military.

Will the number of houses be important to you then?

Does anyone here have a close relative or friend that is 71? Are they the same as when they were 60? or 50?

McCain is an elitist old man. I respect his service to our country, but if he doesn't know how many houses he has...or even how to use a computer....how can he run the greatest country in the world?

I was hoping you would eventually say something relevant Fritz, since you addressed me..... you make no sense.... that whole San Francisco remark was blown out of proportion and has nothing to do with being elite. Let's put it this way...McCain is out of touch.

My early childhood was spent in much the same way as Obama's: as the child of a single mother trying to make ends meet in a state (Hawai'i) where prices of everything, not just real estate, were sky high because of the influence of the super wealthy.

I now own a home in Wilmette, purchased with money I spent all my life to earn and save. I paid for my own education, and am now happily looking forward to making sure my children don't have to.

If you're going to call Obama elitist, you'd better call me elitist too. And while you're at it you might as well spit on the American dream.

I let McCain fool me in 2000 with his straight talk BS. It isn't going to happen again.

Ah, we are straying from the issues, again. I am not interested in how many houses or how much money they have. I am interested in finding out what they will do to stop America's bleeding.

I think we all should be interested in that.

I still don't understand why people think Obama has helped out so much on his home purchase. He got a favorable mortagage because he had GOOD CREDIT, just like anybody else. He bought his home for less than the list price because he NEGOTIATED. You really never heard of someone buying a house for less than the list price. Homes will usually sell for the market value, not asking price. The proximately of Rezko can look suspicious, but proves nothing.

This is the same old class dissension that was used by Castro, Mao, Stalin and other socialists/communists. Let's point out to people how poorly they are doing, and how dare these elites have more than their "fair share." Big problem is - if you fall for this trap, the equality for all scenario, it will be you, and you and you who will be standing in the bread lines, that will be forced to allow another family or two ti live in your "big" house because, well, you just have too much room for one family. While this goes on, it will be the elites over you that will continue to live like kings - just the rest of society will be equally poor. My in-laws went through this in Cuba, homes and businesses seized, lost properties and yeah - isn't Cuban just doing great! Obama is an agitator, and not presidential material. He, and his ilk, should leave our country alone and move to their own Utopia.

How is it bad to complain about the price of argula?

Argula is one of the healthiest foods we can eat. In an overweight country this is nothing to joke about.

Obama is raising taxes for people who can afford it. he's lowering taxes for people who can't afford our current taxes. i *really* wish the media would start reporting this nuance correctly.

but i guess it's easier to go with the right-wing smear sound bite...

Dear Rupert, I was hoping you'd understand what elite means. I'll try again. While McCain was being tortured in Hanoi, your man was at HAAvad. I guess this proves McCain is elite, yes ?

Wow, McCain has a lot of houses. . . that's almost one for each of the 57 states.

Yawwwwwn.

If McCain gets elected, many people will lose their homes to foreclosure while their spouses are off fighting a never-ending war. Open your eyes. You know it to be true.

Hooray, more rich elites arguing about who cares more about us common people.

Ryan, referring to "taxpayers on average" when comparing the two tax plans is misleading, since McCain's tax cuts are so heavily weighted toward the wealthiest taxpayers. "Taxpayers on average" does not equal "typical taxpayer."

In fact, when you break down the average tax increase or decrease by income level, as the Tax Policy Center did, it is clear to see that most taxpayers will have their taxes reduced more under the Obama plan.

For instance, if you earn between $66,000 and $112,000, your 2009 tax bill would decrease by $1,009 under McCain's plan and $1,290 under Obama's.

See the breakdown here:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/taxes.asp

McCain's lifestyle is much, much more out of touch with college educated, hard working professionals in most major urban areas of the country than Obama's is.
Posted by: Chico | August 21, 2008 1:39 PM

Actually, McCain's lifestyle is what we all want whether we are college educated, hard working professionals or not. Perhaps the McCain's have rented homes in vacation areas instead of buying them or maybe they are owned by his wife's company. McCain has his eyes on the big picture not the small day to day operations of the family. Obama will be worth a lot of money when this campaign is over whether he is the president or not.

What's worse not knowing how many house you own or not knowing how many states ar in the US...The number of houses somone ownes probably changes more than the number of states...

Well, Ryan, according to the Urban Brookings Tax Policy center, under McCain's plan, those who earn less than $19,740 would see their tax bill lowered $21/year. Under Obama's plan, their tax bill would be lowered $617/year. For those making $19,741 to $38,980: McCain, -$124, Obama, -$950. For those making $38,981 to $69,490: McCain -$282, Obama, -$1,035. For those making $69,491 to $117,535: McCain -$513, Obama, -$757. For those making more than $117,536, but less than $619,560: McCain, -$2,856, Obama, +$6,770. For the weathiest 1 percent (more than $619, 561): McCain, -$31,943, Obama, +$114,238.

So, I guess we see who the elitist is now. McCain gives huge breaks to the wealthy and a pittance to the middle and lower classes, while Obama gives more to the lower and middle classes and expects the richest of all to pay more. I can see whose side John McCain is on. These HARD NUMBERS were in the Los Angeles Times.

Fritz wrote:

Wrong, Fritz. While McCain was being tortured in Hanoi, Obama was in grammar school.

But while Obama was distinguishing himself at Harvard Law School (1988 - 1991), McCain was being investigated for his role in the Keating Five scandal.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" Roger said. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?" -- Bravo -- what an absolutely brilliant statement from the McCain spokesperson. Obama is a fraud.

BTW, Ryan, the Tax Policy Center is is a joint venture of the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, so we got our numbers from the same source. However, as Laughing Gravy pointed out, you read the numbers the wrong way.

Obama. Vapid gone wild.

Does Barack not have a home in Washington DC? Does he live in the street?

Brian, well it's nice to see a McCain person actually admitted times were tough. I thought they were all in our head. At least that's what McCain's economic adviser told us.

I wish just one candidate would rise above this trash and say no more pointing out how many houses someone has or how many corporate jets their spouse owns. Unfortunately the American public scoops up this trash and gulps it down. I have relatives who still believe Obama is a secret Muslim among other things. I care less how much money Cindy has or how many homes she owns. I want to know what they are going to do so my income taxes don't kill me each year. Both sides should stop acting like children...NAH NAh NAh...that is why I will write in my dog for president.

To Brian..Obama's family lives in Hawaii///he went to visit. Apparently you do not have any family who lives outside your area or need to vacation on occasion.

Deezer, interesting you try to correlate tax policy with elitism. You failed to mention the bottom 40% of wage earners pay zero income tax. The bottom 60% of all wage earners pay 0.6% of all income tax. Yes, that's six-tenths of one percent. The top 1% of wage earners ($1.3M) pay 38.8% of all income tax, and the top 20% ($215k) pay 86.3% of all income tax. I sense you want the top 20% of wage earners to pay 90 or 95 or maybe even 99% of all income tax received, yes ? BTW did anyone ever ask a bum on the street for a job, or a rich man ? If Obama's house isn't a mansion, then for the price he paid he was ripped off. Guess Tony gave him some bad advice.

WHAT REALLY AMAZES ME IS THAT HIS COMMENTS MADE IT TO THE NEWSPAPER. NOTHING BETTER TO COMMENT ON? I AM EVEN SURPRISE AT MYSELF FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE THIS ABOUT THIS SUBJECT.

[John McCain's] top economic advisers said the other day that Americans should stop complaining, that they've become a nation of "whiners." That all of the economic problems that everyone is talking about is just a mental recession.

... Then yesterday, he was asked again, "What do you think about the economy?" And he said "I think the economy is fundamentally strong." Now this puzzled me. I was confused as to what he meant. But then there was another interview .... where somebody asked John McCain "How many houses do you have?" And he said "I'm not sure, I'll have to check with my staff."

... If you don't know how many houses you have, you might think that the economy is fundamentally strong. But if you're like me and you've got one house, or if you're one of the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don't lose their home, you might have a different perspective.

By the way, the answer is John McCain has seven homes.

First of all, if you count condos, owning 4 "houses" isn't really that big of a deal. I know a woman who is a legal Mexican immigrant (and single mother), works a cleaning job during the day, and owns 3 condos herself (one of which she lives in). I wouldn't call her rich.

Second, in response to some earlier comments, conservatives don't call Obama "elite", they call him "elitist". I sincerely hope I don't have to explain the difference.

Tell us Bruce: what is YOUR plan, the Conservatives' plan, the Republicans plan, to help out a man living in total poverty? Or is it just the usual regurgitation of "he should just lift himself up by his own bootstraps"?
Why should Obama help out the son of the man who abandoned him when he was 2 years old?

I certainly can't blame Senator Obama for using this issue to beat Senator McCain over the head. Senator McCain deserves it for such an idiotic answer. But Senator Obama should be careful about it boomeranging to turning voters' attention back to his own dealings in regards to his Hyde Park digs and the political fixer involved in that deal.

News tip: here's how to spot the Obama VP -- who sells three or four houses tomorrow?

Or maybe he will rethink and revise and explain and expand his VP choice once again -- so we won't really get it until next week/

It is amazing the number of folks willing to support McCain given the number of miss-steps, inaccurate geological mistakes, and lies that have emanated from the man's mouth. You all need to ask your selves a few questions, if the man is such a Maverick why is he following right along with the same guys that not only pulled the same tricks on him in 2000 but now are running his campaign now? if he has so much foreign policy experience why doesn’t he know which factions are fighting in Iraq? He doesn’t know much about the economy but will let Phil Gram run that branch, who by the way if don’t know is the same guy who got us in this sorry state in the first place. Nothing he has said other than being a POW has been true and if you don’t believe it go back and google his speeches. Lastly if you think he’s right for this country just look at the real number of unemployment, home foreclosures, and our standing in the world, have the guts to go to independent sights and get real information and ask yourself can we really endure 4 more years of this nonsense.

You can tell obama is getting uptight... no wonder — he's finally realizing his 15 minutes (with media bias, 15 months), is just about up. Hitting McCain on this issue shows just how desperate obama and his Chicago machine cronies have become, not to mention opening the door for McCain to blast him on Rezko... you know, his convicted fundraiser, friend and neighbor — who's sitting in jail.

Unlike Obama, however, McCain did not take away the dream of a house from the families of poor southside residents who were victimized in a federal funding scam by Obama, his convicted buddy and homie, conman Tony Rezko and their associates.

All that is left in their trail are the boarded up, rodent ridden buildings promised and the broken dreams. This is what Obama calls "activism in Chicago's southside.

The presumptive Republican nominee, though, may have some wiggle room in explaining why he couldn't immediately provide an answer when asked by Politico how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. Sen. McCain himself does not own any of the properties. They're all owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control.

Seriously, people - Obama doesn't live in a mansion. If you know anything about neighborhoods and housing prices in Chicago, you know he lives in a pleasant Hyde Park vintage home in the shadow of the University of Chicago. If you don't know anything, clam up.

Obama isn't the elite. He's a self-made man. IT's weird that ppl think he's elitist. Look at McCain! Vote for Obama! Visit WHYOBAMA08.ORG

He earned his homes. It is America where you're suppose to work and buy what you want to buy. Obama is a millionaire who owns a million + home. Get a real issue Obama. Plus mention McCain's age again. he had plenty of time to accumulate his wealth. Focus on the economy: oh yeah, you don't have any solutions other than tax the wealthy. Energy crisis: tax it some more too or put up solar panels. I would if I could afford them. Who wants a guy with no character, no experience in anything other than giving money to community botanical garden projects that don't get done.

Perhaps Obama is lying again. His lips were moving, right?

All congress critters have to maintain two households--one in the DC area and one in their home districts (unless that district is in nearby MD or VA).

People are beginning to see Obama for the liar he is.

Rich: "It is amazing the number of folks willing to support McCain given the number of miss-steps, inaccurate geological mistakes, and lies that have emanated from the man's mouth."

I think you mean geographic mistakes, not geological. And perhaps you're unaware of Obama's statements during the primaries about visiting 58 states so far, with only 2 more to go.

Everyone mispeaks and when your every word is recorded it's easy to blow it out of proportion. The difference is the media is running this as a lead story where Obama's comments were not. Much like spelling 'potato' or Howard Dean's yee-haw, the media destroys people based on nonsense while we all pay the price by not voting on the real issues.

So, like you, I'm amazed - by the number of people who vote for the leadership of our country based on irrelevant distractions thrown up by the media. If you disagree on the issues, fine. But don't choose your candidate based on the bloopers the media chooses to highlight.

I'll agree it was a dumb answer to the question, but really, who cares? It's not front page worthy and really has zero impact on how he would perform his duties as President.

Obama was an Illinois politician and all he has in one house!

He must not be very good at it.

Re the 57 states issue: DO YOU REALLY THINK a Harvard-educated constitutional law lecturer doesn't know how many STATES there are??? Given Senator Obama's non-stop schedule, I wonder how many of YOU who are talking all that trash wouldn't have misspoken at SOME POINT on the campaign trail???...or could you even DO WHAT HE'S DONE...WOULD YOU HAVE THE STAMINA??? I DOUBT IT !!!!!

What idiots! Asking about his investments in houses is like asking someone how many stocks she owns through her 401K investment fund. Anyone know how many stocks they're invested in through a fund? I didn't think so.

I'd rather have a guy as President who has multiple and is willing to invest in America than a President, in Barack, who is friends will Bill Ayers, domestic terrorist founder of Weather Underground.

Houses, silly. Domestic terrorism not funny.

Mary Dawson: That's the point... unless you think it's OK for Obama to misspeak and not McCain.

So what, the guy owns a bunch of condos. All of these guys are loaded. It's only because of the fact that Barrack is new to Washington that he doesn't have much of a record to point to and doesn't have the connections and history to be ridiculously wealthy. He's just getting started with his books now (which is about all he's done as an Illinois senator so far). Check back with Obama in 30 years and he probably will have several homes as well.

I'm voting for the guy with one house.

I don't want a President who had an adulterous affair with his current first lady.

I'm voting for a president and a vice president...a vice president is the insurance policy the president has chose and if McCain's choice of a totally uninformed, unintelligent VP shows how much he cares about protecting our country in case he dies...John McCain DOESN'T CARE &%#& ABOUT US, THE REAL AMERICANS. HIS choice of his replacement is DEPLORABLE.
