When Sen. Barack Obama takes the stage to accept the Democratic nomination for president as planned this month in Denver, don't be fooled into thinking that hard work is not needed for the Illinois senator to go on to win the presidential campaign, write Robert L. Borosage and Katrina vanden Heuvel in the new issue of The Nation.

"Moreover, even if victorious, Obama will inherit the calamitous conditions wrought by conservative failures--a sinking economy, unsustainable occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, accelerating climate change, Gilded Age inequality, a broken healthcare system and much more," they write.

Brosage, co-director of the progressive Campaign for America's Future and board president of Progressive Majority political action committee, and vanden Heuvel, editor of the magazine, explore what Obama needs for progressive reform.

"Obama will also be limited by the constricted consensus of an establishment not yet able to contemplate the changes needed to set this country right again," they write.

The writers acknowledge criticism over Obama's reversals, saying "his fold on the FISA wiretap bill, mixed signals on trade, the compromise on offshore drilling--has been clear and deplorable," but they hold him in a far better light than McCain, describing the Arizona senator as "Bush on steroids."

Obama began in the mushy center and has been sprinting to the Right -- especially since HC dropped out of the race. Witness his 180 degree turns vis-avis Public campaign financing; NAFTA (multiple flip-flops on a single issue; ending the War in Iraq; The Patriot Act; to name just a few. He's flip-flopping like a perch on the bottom of a rowboat.
Once again America is faced with a choice that is no choice. Even if you buy the silly hyperbole that "McCain is Bush on steroids", and decide that BO is the lesser evil, then what difference will a vote for Obama make? He proffers no new concrete policy proposals. No executive experience. No grasp of foreign affairs. No change. No hope. Just slogans.

This Obama supporter finds it is very interesting to read the sour grapes being put forth by the Nation staff in the wake of the John Elizabeth Edwards fiasco--which may have cost the country the only true progressive ready to hit the ground running with a knowledge of the landscape--Hillary Clinton.
Had the Nation not been so misogynist (yes, lefties can be misognyist--when she doesn't look like a 'chick' apparently anything goes) regarding Hillary Clinton, they would not be in this situation.
Hillary was the true 'progressive'--despite having voted for that war--which Obama woulda voted for had he been in her shoes.
Am going to vote Obama, work for Obama, don't get me wrong.
But ALL the media failed progressives this campaign cycle--including the progressive media.
Reading Tom Haydn's sour grapes about the demise of MoveOn.Org is very telling--he doesn't explain that the bashing of Hillary and the premature endorsement of Obama is what cost the left its financial voice from here on out in this campaign. A lot of us who pulled out of MoveOn did so because it felt like we were talking to kids with fingers in their ears screaming "SHUT UP--WE KNOW BEST!"

But Obama has far greater problems convincing swing voters that he's both capable and trustworthy (and a "patriotic" American) than anything he has to prove to the Dem base. Borosage needs to realize this.

Progressive is a code word liberals use to define socialism and in Obamas case Marxism.
The Progressives gave us the income tax, the Volstead Act or prohibition both have wrecked our nation and taken away our freedoms.
From his early days as Alice Palmer's successor Obama has trended left and radical.
Read The Case Against Barack Obama it describes an Obama the driveby media will not cover. The book since August 4 rollout is #5 in NY Times list and #1 on Amazon.com
Obamas website fightthe smears will have a lot of work to overcome the truth in this book.
It talks about Rezko, Dick Daley and Obama, Jeremiah Wright, Father Pfleger, Malcolm X, William Ayers and many other radicals and their relations with Obama.
Rezko involved Obama in ACORN that voted people named Dick Tracy and Jive Turkey. He has a dark side that is radical 24/7. With Russia acting up can we afford a Commander in Chief with Obamas radical associations and bad judgement.
This election has nothing to do with race--Condolessa Rice would make a great President and so would many other qualified African Americans but Obama is a far leftist out of the mainstream with abortion with government funding, infanticide and partial birth abortion. He lacks the ability to understand the energy paucity and reaching out to socalled renewable energy which accounts for only 7 percent of our available energy as Paul Gigot with the Wall Street Journal says.. Clearly 93 percent is gas and oil to propel fossil fuel driven combustion engines.
Obama will raise taxes to the highest level ever while our nation faces a slow economy anyone with first grade education knows that is bad for our nation.
Sorry folks but this puppy Obama can't hunt. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Interesting to see if Obama talks to his fellow Democrats as if they were a bunch of morons as he has done in the past-

ARTICLE>don't be fooled into thinking that hard work is not needed for the Illinois senator to go on to win the presidential campaign.

TRY HARD WORK and FAIRY DUST!

What's the opposite of "rose-colored glasses"?

Sinking economy? The economy generally turns down in a presidential election year when the incumbent can't be re-elected, then turns upward after the election. See, for instance, the unemployment chart published by the Tribune on the editorial page on May 6.

The economy hates uncertainty, and who is going to be the next president is a great uncertainty.

Accelerating climate change? The global temperature hasn't increased since 1998. What we ought to be worried about now is that the next president and Congress will do something that will drive us all into the ditch, like one of Barack's gutter balls, to address a nonexistent problem.

One has to wonder if those folks at the Nation have been paying any attention at all, or are they just driven mad by their own ideology.

BO - A liberal View - as if there is any other choice?

I like how these libs say that we are occupying Afghanistan. I thought it was only the "unjust" war in Iraq where we are the occupiers? Flat-liners need to get their sdtories straight. Do these libs want the troops out of Afghanistan also?

A "progressive view?" Are you sure this is the title you want to brand Obama with? The last Progressive Party in the United States was financed by the Soviet Union. Its candidate for president, Henry Wallace, although a leftist, quit in disgust when he discovered that the Progressive Party, headquartered in San Francisco, was a front for the later outlawed Communist Party of the USA. It's all there in the history books, guys. Remember what those were? A garbage dump by any other name still smells as bad.

Jerry--the FIRE dept is socialist--turn em away if they show at your house since you hate socialism so much.
And be sure to send that social security check back.
Progressive is NOT codeword for the things you say.

Leave it to a Swamp reporter to find people to the LEFT of Barack Obama. And give their views free publicity.

Isn't it also ironic that this so-called "progressive" article supports so much the activities of labor unions, which are among the most reactionary organizations in the world today, attempting as they do to maintain the status quo, only more so, in the face of a radically changed world?

No, the Fire Department is NOT socialist and there's not a single fire fighter who would not take offense at the comparison. For the writer's edification, socialism is a system in which there is no private property. Fire departments are financed by, guess what, taxes paid by private enterprise and individuals who, largely, make their money from private enterprise. Next faulty analogy?
