That baseball that they play on the North Side of Chicago, that's not "serious'' baseball - at least not the way Barack Obama sees it.
Obama, a Southsider, was asked by ESPN's Stuart Scott what would happen if both the Cubs and the White Sox made it to the World Series.
"I would be going,'' Obama said.
"Who would you root for?'' Scott asked.
"Oh, that's easy,'' Obama replied. "White Sox.
"I'm not one of these fair weather fans,'' the junior senator from Illinois and presumptive presidential nominee of the Democratic Party explained. "You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer, beautiful people up there. People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. Southside."

I can't wait for the empty suit and Daley to have to put on Cubbies hats when they go to the playoffs this Fall and the Sox don't.

Cub fans not serious? How is this guy going to talk to world leaders when he can't even be diplomatic to fans at Wrigley - not going to win votes with that type of statement Senator. I love when he puts his foot in his mouth which seems to be quite frequently.
Posted by: vla | August 26, 2008 8:50 AM
Obama is not only naive on world foreign affairs but he also does not know anything about baseball. The Chicago Cubs at the moment have the best record in baseball. And according to Obama that is not "serious" baseball. Obama must have been asleep again just as he was through 23 years of Jeremiah Wright's hateful and racist sermons.
Posted by: Depot Jim | August 26, 2008 9:12 AM
Obviously he must not have stayed long at the Cubs game or had one too many, because I know lots of serious fans who go to games not just for the beer but to WATCH GOOD BASEBALL.
Posted by: Sarah | August 26, 2008 9:13 AM
Terry - Cubs fans can spell "intelligent" (and our team is better)
Posted by: Paul | August 26, 2008 9:14 AM
His comments were definitely made in good nature and its good to see a politician stay by his "team"...then root for the team that's getting all of the attention. It's like when Michael Jordan would go to the Wrigley and be seen in a Cubs jersey. He played for the Soxs and it never seemed right. He was only there because that was the "place to be". I'm a Cubs fan and I have no problem with Barack saying that the White Sox are better...because that is he favorite team. If it was me...and in 2005 I rooted for the Cubs...even though the White Sox won the World Series.
Posted by: Charlie | August 26, 2008 9:15 AM
I like Obama and will vote for him, but his comment is a complete misconception. I was at the White Sox game on Sunday, a rare occasion when the park was full. Half the fans walk around the shopping mall/airport concourse looking for churros to eat, and you are treated to ESPN jock jams on the loudspeaker after every pitch. No one was 'seriously' watching the game.

It's just a game, folks.
GO OBAMA !
Posted by: Mary Margaret | August 26, 2008 9:21 AM
Let's see, the Cubs have John Cusack as their fan and the Sox have the soon to be Most Powerful Man on Earth as their fan.
Sounds about right.
Posted by: Bluto | August 26, 2008 9:25 AM
OK, I like Sen. Obama... And this is really frivelous stuff that doesn't affect my vote in any way. But still, Senator, did you have to open your mouth and stick your foot in it like this?
Here are the Cubs, with one of their best teams ever and legitimate pennant contender, and you had to go and belittle them and their nationwide following? That's just dumb, and certainly not befitting of someone trying to win votes.
That's fine if you're a Sox fan, Senator, but the smart thing would've been to congratulate the Cubs on a great season so far and maybe hope for an "L Train" World Series this year.
At the very least, perpetuating the myth of Cubs fans not caring about the game, etc., is really tasteless.

Posted by: Damon Ryde | August 26, 2008 9:41 AM
Jeff,
Only complete fair weather tools call the Chicago Cubs the Cubbies. It's a proven fact, many surveys have shown that consistently almost 66% of "fans" exiting Wrigley Field cannot name who the opposing team was.
Posted by: jackson | August 26, 2008 9:42 AM
The Cubs are the most inept franchise in the history of all sports, not just baseball. No major sports franchise in any sport has displayed the pathetic futility any where near that of the Cubs. For any Cub fan to find the gumption to display any kind of cockiness because they are FINALLY fielding a competitive team shows their lack of sports awareness. Obama's point is that the popularity of the Cubs has absolutely nothing to do with what takes place on the field. Any Chicagoan knows this. I don't have a beef with true Cubs fans...but these arrogant ones would do well to remember that their nickname is "Lovable LOSERS". If the word "loser" is in your nickname, you might hold off on any arrogance until your team actually accomplishes something(maybe in the next 100 years). Having said that, it wasn't a smart comment from a political perspective because there are a lot of Cub fans.

Once a JERK, always a JERK. His knowledge of baseball is the same as his lack of knowledge--- period. President? He couldn't even make a good dog catcher.
Posted by: Ray Gorak | August 26, 2008 9:55 AM
He should have said the tourists who sit in Wrigley Field are not serious about the Cubs. But to say Cubs fans are not serious is a slight mistake. I'm a Cubs fan. I'm serious. And I'm still undecided.
Posted by: Larry A | August 26, 2008 9:55 AM
I hope he shows up at Wrigley for an October playoff game and gets the heck booed out of him on national TV. What a jerk -- which of course is redundant since he's a Sox fan.
Posted by: Leonard Nelson | August 26, 2008 9:58 AM
Oh, don't get carried away. It was ever thus - the stereotype that Cub fans want to be seen while Sox fans are more serious about the game has existed for decades. My father was an Andy Frain usher back in the '50's, and he always said that Sox fans were more serious.
Honestly, Cub fans, would you rather have Obama lie about this? He spoke like a true South Sider, which he is, after all.
Posted by: itsmike | August 26, 2008 9:59 AM
If all the "serious" baseball fans are at Comiskey, then I am ashamed there are so few baseball fans in Chicago. They are in first place and still can't sell out a stadium.
Posted by: Jenny | August 26, 2008 10:09 AM
Hmmmmm, let's see: on the South Side you have an unending barrage of blaring music, silly scoreboard "entertainment," and the fans have to be prompted to "make some noise." With all of that crap going on, how can anybody be watching the game? Gimme good old north-side ball any time!

True baseball fans at Comiskey (sorry, US Never Sellout Field)??? All 3,000 of you???? Sorry, I'd rather sell out our stadium every night and have you Sox fan morons claim it's because Cubs fans aren't real fans. The Sox will never have a fan base as large as the Cubs fans. Get over it.

Not a smart political move. Why say anything alienating? He's just a typical White Sox Fan. Can't be satisfied with the strength of his own team. He has to somehow tear down Cubs fans. I went to a Sox game where they won and when I was leaving, they were chanting "Cubs suck!" How about "Sox win!"?
Posted by: Anthony | August 26, 2008 10:16 AM
Bob in Atlanta:
If you were in Chicago you would know that your statement is false. If The Cell (Comisky is gone btw.) has the baseball fans, then why is the stadium always so empty? I'll admit that there are a few people who go to Wrigley because it's hip, and as with every team there are some of fair-weather fans, but there is little doubt that the true fans root for the Cubs.

I guess all of those Cub fans that pack NL stadiums when the Cubs are on the road are also clueless about the Cubs, and don't know anything about baseball???
Let's face it, ALL MLB stadiums have drunk, idiotic fans that haven't a clue about what's going on with the game. To say all Cub fans only go to Wrigley Field to party in the world's largest outdoor beer garden is like saying all Sox fans are trailer park trash (all Sox fans are like those idiots that charged KC's firstbase coach). Both are inaccurate statements and are just plain stupid.
Regardless of whether you're a Cubs fan or Sox fan, why give the other team the time of day? It seems like too many fans love to hate the other team more than they love to root for their own team.

And this fool goes out of his way to take a shot at his own constituancy? Good god. Well, I was going to vote for him, shame cause it could have mattered here in Florida...

Maybe those of you complaining about the "stereotype" that is being portrayed of the Cubs fans, should look within your own organization. At least three or four times a game, the stereotype is perpetuated by the cameramen at Cubs games who continue to show the "hot girls" busy texting away on their phone in the middle of the game. They showed an ENTIRE ROW of girls completely engrossed in their cell phones in the middle of the game last Saturday, so these are the "serious" Cub fans that are being projected to the world.

Best record in MLB? That would be the Rays. Followed by the Angels...so what's your point?

You are NOT selling out stadiums. I had a convo about this with a co-worker, who is a Sox fan, and she said she couldn't even GIVE her 3rd row tickets away because no one wanted them. Just FYI

Jables maybe you should check the standings again cause last time i checked the Cubs did have the best record in baseball. Oh and that infield fly question i bet if you asked people leaving each stadium that only 25% at each stadium would know the actual rule.
Posted by: tim | August 26, 2008 10:56 AM
I guess he’ll have to put on a reluctant smile and say something disingenuous when he has to welcome the Cubs to the White House. It would be great if one of the Cubs were then to remind him of today’s comment and force him to further elaborate. I still tend to support him (originally a Biden supporter and watching McCain), but he’s really got me wondering what he might think and say as president, if he’s going to say something so dumb about his own constituents while still their senator.

"The Sox will never have a fan base as large as the Cubs fans. Get over it." Sox fans are over it, Jonathan. It's you insecure Cubs fans who always seem to raise this point. When the Sox won the World Series, Cubs fans wrote desparate, shrill letters to the Trib that the Sox would never be as popular as Wrigley Field, oh, excuse me, the Cubs. So what? We don't care. As for distractions, at any given game at Wrigley, I'd bet more fans can name the B-list celebrity who will mangle "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" than who is pitching.

Rays and Angels best teams? Are you kidding? Haven't looked at the standings today have you? The Cubs have been the best team all year on a constant basis, not a "who's on first" day to day like the Sox. As for Obama? Everyone is entitled to thier opinions, everyone is entitled to root for their favorite team, let him have his entitlement. As for not voting for him? Grow up people. He will gladly welcome the Cubs to the White House after they win the World Series this year as he is as gracious a man as there is. He will concede his teams failure to get past the regular season and celebrate with the Cubs, a REAL Chicago team and its FANS, REAL FANS by the way.

Looks like Obama is getting confused. He generally talks which ever way the wind blows. In Chicago, even though I myself am a Sox fan, the wind blows Cubs. And it blows Cubs nationwide on WGN.
That's why McCain should win. At least he admits he has never heard Daddy Yankee's song Gasolina yet accepts his endorsement.

What is it with fans who can't talk their team up without putting the other team down? Is it genetic? Nothing is more distasteful than someone who can only praise their team by putting another one down. If your team can't stand on its own merits...
As to fans and attendance, the stats prove that the Cubs have more fans than the Sox, both in total numbers and percentages. See
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/attendance Click the column headers to sort any which way.
The Cubs AVERAGE 99.1% attendance at home throughout the year. The Sox average 75.8%. Only two teams average more than the Cubs.
Cubs are #6 in TOTAL attendance for the year (all of the ones ahead of them also have larger stadiums...), Sox are #15.
No one is going to believe that the majority of the 2.8 million fans at Wrigley this year are there just for the beer and to be seen. Or that the 2.1 million Sox fans are there to go shopping on the concourse and watch the fireworks.
Whether you're a Sox fan or a Cubs fan, give the majority of the other team's fans some credit for being fans of the game.

Um, Barack, my man: are you sure you want to "micturate" off a few million Chicagoans who are significantly more likely to vote Democratic than otherwise by claiming that they don't go to Wrigley to watch games? How about the tens of millions of Cub fans around the nation?
Where's your political advisor during all this? And does he have a foot/mouth-sized crowbar?
Posted by: rwilymz | August 26, 2008 11:55 AM
Not a smart statement. People are watching the game. The Cubs are the best team in all of baseball right now and are playing top notch ball and REAL baseball fans like myself are loving it. what happens in the bleachers or anywhere in Wrigley isnt the REAL cubs fans fault. Out of 40,000 plus people there are bound to be some there for the experience or to enjoy the history, and I wouldnt change Wrigley for anything. It is most definitely a tourist attraction, but that's obvious since its one of the few remaining classic parks left. Regardless of a Sox championship, if they didn't blow up Comisky there would be people visiting the Southside of Chicago to see that park too. I had great memories of that place even as a Cub fan. Be smarter than that Barack. You're calling out a lot of people when you say that, and you are dead wrong. Go Cubs! see you in October, IF you make it!

I feel for my brother. He's voting for Obama and is already planning his world series celebration for the Cubs. Going to be a rough fall for him as he watches the demise of both.
Posted by: RCK | August 26, 2008 12:09 PM
Y'all are kidding right? i mean, none of you take this seriously or put any political weight to it do you? No one would really change their vote based on this, right? I can't believe this crap. I don;t care if he or McCain are Packer fans. You think one of them is best for the job and you vote for them, right? You know, war, the economy, healthcare.. real life stuff folks. Baseball... entertainment.. and tha is the way Obama is treating it, entertainment. Geesh. With comments like some of these I see how our country is in the shape it is in.
Posted by: Stratmaster | August 26, 2008 12:11 PM
Obviously, he doesn't go to Cub games--if he did, he would see all the fans sitting on the edge of their seats watching every single pitch and every single play. I think you will make a most awesome President, but your comments about Cubs baseball are much to be desired--especially to the millions of Cub fans around the world!!! Go Cubs Go!
Posted by: Sharon | August 26, 2008 12:13 PM
I would have voted for him, too. Not any more with that kind of talk. McCain in '08 all the way!
Posted by: Dave | August 26, 2008 12:15 PM
Obama knows his constituents. Cubs fans are monied elites, members of the owner class. Sox fans are working class, family oriented. Go to a Cubs games and you're tripping over investment bankers and trophy wives yakking on their cell phones. Go to the Cel and you see fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, all watching the game, sharing the experience. The Sox have mullet day, the Cubs should have valet park your Mercedes day...
Posted by: mrgoodbar | August 26, 2008 12:15 PM
HA!
After watching a Cubs fan get into a fight with Elvis on Elvis night, I have little sympathy for this comment.
He's right you know!
Posted by: OH | August 26, 2008 12:16 PM
Just goes to show he has no idea what he's talking about. Wrigley bleachers and rooftops are for partying, no denying that. But the majority of fans in the stands know the game and watch the game. It's time to give up on this argument and pay attention to your own team.
Posted by: Lauren | August 26, 2008 12:16 PM
I love how the Cubs fans are so upset by this. He's a Southsider, and has done a lot of work to help communities on the south side. Do you want a president that's going to flip on the drop of the hat. If that's the case I guess you voting hopes left with Clinton, or maybe your going for McCain. If you don't like Obama just admit you don't like the guy don't use baseball as an excuse.
Posted by: yesIam | August 26, 2008 12:20 PM
Go to the Cell and you see Sox fans run on the field attack coaches.
Posted by: Vote McCain | August 26, 2008 12:25 PM
He just lost my vote!
Posted by: dude where is my dell | August 26, 2008 12:25 PM
Are you kidding me?! What an idiotic statement. Just another example of what a snob this know-nothing creep is. Obama is not even "from" Chicago . . . so he needs to give up trying to play the "lifelong" Sox fan. I'm not even a Cubs fan and this still infuriates me.
Posted by: Marko | August 26, 2008 12:25 PM
I don't care, Bob and Jackson. I know the Cubs have the best record in baseball and the Sox and their angry manager can't even keep first place in their division. I've gone to games in both stadiums and had a great time every time I was at Wrigley but I've been to the Cell Out when their were more vendors in the stands than fans.
It's going to be fun watching Daley groan through the presser where he has to put on that Cubs hat.
Posted by: Jeff | August 26, 2008 12:25 PM
Agreed--anyone who said they're going to change their vote to McCain is a blundering fool. This is baseball people.
Posted by: Sharon | August 26, 2008 12:27 PM
Once again I am reminded why I like this guy. Wouldn't it have been SO easy to make a safe statement? Perhaps that although he is a South Sider and has always been a Sox fan, BOTH teams are great and he would be cheering for them BOTH! THEN would all the haters be happy????
Posted by: Jane | August 26, 2008 12:27 PM
Come on, Cub fans. Would you rather he patronized you and pretended to like both teams, like our governor? Give the man credit for picking a side and sticking to it. He had nothing to gain as a politician by disrespecting the country's most popular team. He did it out of allegiance to his team. I know that's confusing to Cub fans, who regularly boo their own players, but that's what fans do.
Posted by: BOK | August 26, 2008 12:28 PM
Didn't like Obama before these comments.
Really don't like Obama after these comments.
I suspect Obama will have a lot of time to ponder "what went wrong" in November. This applies equally to his baseball team as to the election.
Posted by: Blue | August 26, 2008 12:30 PM
This is just another reason not to vote for him. There are many more......GO CUBBIES!
Posted by: Mary | August 26, 2008 12:31 PM
Brian,
I have many friends that are Cub fans that actually know baseball. Even they admit that Cub fans have nothing to be cocky about until they stop being synonomous with futility. Their only claim to fame is their huge fan base, which is the result of superior marketing(WGN), transplant fans from other cities who moved to the north side and jumped on the bandwagon(which is ok) and mostly the wrigley field/wrigleyville area experience(which I do not argue is a good time). I repeat, you are the "lovable LOSERS'! Congrats on having so many fans but they don't hand out trophies for that.
Posted by: John | August 26, 2008 12:32 PM
And Julie, you don't get sarcasm, do you?
Posted by: Barney | August 26, 2008 12:34 PM
Seriously, if anyone allows an individual's sport's team affiliation to determine their vote, this country is in worse shape than I thought. Newsflash idiots: Baseball is a game, being President is the most important job in the world.
Also, the idea that Cubs fans are outraged by Obama perpetuating the stereotype about them need to read the tripe about Sox fans Cubs fans consistently post on these forums. White Sox fans must constantly read how they're poor, uneducated hillbillies while the elitest north siders are loveable losers. What stereotype is more hurtful and damaging???
Get a clue you idiots!
Go Sox
Go America
Go away Cubs fans
Posted by: Wow | August 26, 2008 12:35 PM
Yeah. A jumbotron with ads, lame kisscams and shell games, anything to keep "fans" interested. "that's baseball" A whiffleball field inside the the stadium, because we don't want kids actually watching the game. "that's baseball" An actual bar behind the outfield fence. "that's baseball" Lame, tired explosives displays that only the 4 and under crowd and Sox fans find entertaining. "that's baseball"
And, Barack Hussain Obama, please explain how, if Cubs fans only go to have a beer, why do they triple the Sox in TV ratings? People are watching TV to see people drinking beer? Please explain that, B. Hussain.
Ehh, what should we expect from a guy who calls the despicable Emil Jones a mentor, gets home loans from Tony Rezko, and chants "si se puede" at rallys promoting the breaking of this country's laws? The next time anyone in his campaign complains about the Republicans stereotyping any group, it's pure hypocricy.
The fools who vote for this product of the media will be denying that they did in two years.
Posted by: Joey | August 26, 2008 12:36 PM
Obama seems to imply that "beautiful" people can't be "serious." Hasn't he seen Paris' video yet? The latest one, not the one that put her on the map.
Posted by: Bud | August 26, 2008 12:36 PM
So a guy who shows up in Chicago from Hawaii / Maylasia / Kansas / Los Angles / New York, to work for a law firm defending slum lords is a “true south sider” and feels like he has the standing to tell me that after being born and raised here fifty years ago and attending Cubs games for thirty five of them…. I’m not a serious fan.
Every voice should be heard, except Alice Palmer’s. He and his lawyer friends saw to that.
The Politics of Hope are his credo, unless sending 8,000 e mails out encouraging the media to look at an opponents sealed child custody records benefits Himself, then it’s ok to be slimy.
He’s going to “Build Bridges” unless you’re a political opponent that Himself can pilfer an entire political agenda from, then it’s fine to tell the country a thousand times that “She can’t be trusted”.
And your knight in shining armor who will reach across us all to unite us… leaves behind a state senate district that is underdeveloped, gang infested and poverty ridden and a state party that is the nations model for partisanship and political corruption, thanks in large part to his buddy Tony Rezko and his padron, Richie Daley.
He’s ripped apart his church, his senate district, his state and now the carpetbagger tries his hand at sports in his attempt to polarize America even further.
Incredible

It reminds me of the time someone asked Kerry whether he was a Rolling Stones or Beatles man. He gesticulated back and forth ultimatly saying they were both good. Well, yeah, we know they are both good, that wasn't the question...
Kerry irked me on that day. He showed that he was fearful of aggravating any potential bloc of voters to the point where he was unable to commit to even a simple opinion on a rock 'n roll band.
I give Obama some credit here. Imagine the howls of disdain he would face if he split the difference, said he liked them both, or made some other weak politically calculated glib answer.
This is a great example of how Obama is different from politicians we've seen before. That uniqueness is running head long into a lot of cynicism and this is resulting in a lot of the vitriol on the display here.

It looks like many of you need to re-read why people are upset. It's not because he is a Sox fan, it's because he bashed the Cubs. He could have said "I'm a Sox fan" and left it at that. But no. He had to be a typical Sox fan and try to bash the Cubs and their fans.
It's not the team he roots for, but the lack of class, and social responsibility he has shown in these comments.

South sider, i thought he was Hawaii 5-0bama
Posted by: Dan | August 26, 2008 12:44 PM
the cubs have more than 80 wins because they are 12-4 against the PIRATES. over valued indeed.
Posted by: b rad | August 26, 2008 12:44 PM
I am a dyed-in-the-wool Reopublican but I do admire Obama's loyalty to his team. Southsiders are Sox fans; Northsiders are Cubs fans. So what? Some people like apples and some people like oranges. The world does not revolve around baseball. Some of the responses from Cubs' fans were very juvenile. Criticizing his jeans, for instance. Come on.
Posted by: Barb | August 26, 2008 12:45 PM
I don't care he likes the Sox and not the cubs but when he trash talks the fans publicly this is just not smart. I can only imagine what kind of bush-esk comments he will make if elected president.
Posted by: Michael | August 26, 2008 12:45 PM
He stands by his baseball team, is that like the same way he stood by his pastor and stood by his grandmother - you know - the typical white person...?
I hope he never stands for me!

John:
If you check your history, we dropped that horrible nick-name years ago. We are just "Loveable".
It was done out of necessity. As we neared winning our 10000th game, we realized, that our total winning percentage proved we are not losers. We just haven't been able to make it to the big dance in 43 years.

I can't stand this man. He represents the NORTH SIDE as well as the south side in the Senate. Not that one person can name something he's done as our Senator.
The Cubs have the best record in the MLB right now---what a badly timed remark.
Posted by: anastasia | August 26, 2008 12:50 PM
When was the last time this chump went to a game ?!?! He doesn't know squat about the sport.
NO-BAMA
Posted by: Brian | August 26, 2008 12:56 PM
McCain was a Cubs fan, but he had his heart broken back in '06 when they lost the Series to the White Sox.
Cubs had the best record in baseball that year too.
Posted by: TheOldRoman | August 26, 2008 12:57 PM
Wow, I never leave comments but I just had to for this one! I am one of the biggest Cubs fans! When I go to a game, I sit there and never really even leave my seat, my eyes stay on the field watching the game the whole time! And I know most other Cubs fans are the same way because I have seen it! If Obama is a Sox fan, he probably never has been to a Cubs game so he doesn't know what it is really like. Of course you are going to get the people that go just to get drunk and party, but they do that at Sox games too, as well as at any game! Obama's comment was insulting and rediculous!
Posted by: Maureen | August 26, 2008 12:57 PM
What a stupid comment. He wants to alienate the entire North Side? When we get to the World Series I think he should be banned from wearing a Cubs cap and attending the games. What a fool. Sign me a serious Cubs fan.
Posted by: Sweetpea | August 26, 2008 12:58 PM
He's not really a southsider. Didn't grow up here.
MIchelle is actually the big Sox fan and converted him.
Kind of like she made him a Christian. On that poi
