In the realm of seaside politics and runaway metaphors, the junior senator from Illinois would seem to be catching a certain wave.
Along an overlook on the South Shore of Oahu, Barack Obama also visited the spot where he had scattered his mother's ashes after her death. Obama stood quietly and sprinkled flowers from a lei into the ocean, the surf crashing on the rocks.
On his week long vacation to the island - Obama also visited his grandfather's grave in Punchbowl Cemetery. Obama brought his wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Malia and Sasha, to lay a flower lei at his grave.
There is no doubt that this body-surfing image will serve the returning-to-campaigning senator better than that memorable footage of Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee for president, wind-surfing.
Obama returns to Chicago today, and tomorrow he will join his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, on a minister's stage for an event that CNN will broadcast live.
The Rev. Rick Warren, author of the best-selling book The Purpose-Driven Life, will interview McCain and Obama on Saturday at Warren's 20,000-member Saddleback mega-church in southern California. He promises no "gotcha questions.''
Campaign surf's up.

Comments
This footage is definitely better for him than the windsurfing was for Kerry. Too bad. With a nice shot of Obama at the beach in a tiny speedo, republicans could have painted him as too creepy to be President. Imagine the ads.

I bet he was throwing petals from a lei into the sea - a wish to return to the Islands. Kind of like throwing a coin into the Fountain of Trevi...

It was great news to read that Senator Obama was finally taking a vacation. After the grueling schedule he has kept and all of the appearances he has made, including the "'57" states he has visited, alright, maybe it was only 50 !! He deserves a good lengthy vacation. After all, he has achieved the impossible, or what was thought to be impossible !! Now, it is on to another impossibility, the Presidency of the our United States. If Americans are using their heads, instead of using their local, Republican chapter's agenda, which includes the fear and smear machine, than Senator Obama has a very good chance of gaining our White House. I hope Americans will be fair-minded and generous of spirit, in giving Senator Obama full consideration for our Presidency. He deserves, at least, that !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Even if everything in Corsi's book is correct, it certainly isn't something that a politician who sees himself as less than a deity, if not The Deity, should concern himself with. His 40-page rebuttal provides a good reminder of the immensely flawed character of Obama, himself, rather than addressing any substantive issue. That a major newspaper would take up the cudgel on Obama's behalf, especially given its shameful cooperation with various smear books directed against President Bush, indicates that Corsi has found a chink in Obama's carefully crafted persona and if they don't silence Corsi, Obama is finished. Naturally you won't read about any of this in the swamp.

How will it "play"? Who cares. Obama enjoying a vacation in Hawaii doesn't make him any more or less presidential. After beating Hillary, no small feat, he needs the r&r.
Posted by: RomanB | August 15, 2008 12:25 PM
We hear about McCain's history but then we get the follies of Obama. The ad comparing the celebrity of Obama against Paris Hilton was dead on. People are treating this presidential election like a season of American Idol.

Don Fitzgerald wrote: "I hope Americans will be fair-minded and generous of spirit, in giving Senator Obama full consideration for our Presidency."
I have given Obama serious consideration. I even gave him my primary vote.
I won't vote for him in November, however. Too much about the company he keeps has been revealed. Also, considering how he has NOT served the people of Illinois who elected him senator, and the fact that he has no experience in international politics, he is not equipped to lead this nation.
I am glad that people throughout this country are finally beginning to understand that Barack Obama has been a do-nothing senator in Illinois, and a mere 143 days after being elected, launched his presidential campaign.
He looks great and reads speeches very well. Other than that, there's really not much substance tot he guy.

Yes, Jeff, I'm sure the ultra-Diety, John McCain would never respond to a whole book of lies about him. I'm sure he's serene in the knowledge that the entire world recognizes him complete moral, ethical, and intellectual superiority over every other human being. Everyone readily acknowledges that Saint John McCain is without flaw, sinless, and always correct.
Mere mortals like Obama care when they are slandered. They care that people klnow the truth about them. They nneed to defend themselves when unfairly attacked.

I thought McCain was the old guy? Why did poor Obama need a week's vacation in Hawaii?
Posted by: Jack | August 15, 2008 12:40 PM
This is sad. Perhaps Obama is simply too "uppity" so that Dan resorts to a "walk on water" comment. And, Hillary Clinton suffered through all those comments about being something akin to a female dog. Of course, the McCain bashers are having a field day with his age. If logic and reason don't work, employ racism, sexism and ageism. Demonize the opposition.
Also, Sunshinelvr seems to believe that heroism is a qualification for being President. Is McCain an Eisenhower - or is he a Grant?
It seems to me that McCain's straight-line approach to answering every problem is an indication that he's much more like the younger Bush than his father. I don't believe that we can take another four years of making the world an even more dangerous place than it is. I also don't believe that we can continue policies that push middle income earners into poverty, that allow the nation's highways, bridges and other infrastructure to crumble, and that pursues sources of energy (i.e., nuclear) for which we have no solution as to the storage of spent fuel rods. I don't see McCain as offering anything other than platitudes and failed ideologies.
Posted by: Aegipan | August 15, 2008 12:44 PM
Guess he can get back to the Democratic legislative agenda now. You know, the one where he raises taxes, blocks energy exploration, etc. Assuming he ever shows up to vote, that is.

Jerry White -- The book may be #1 on the NYT list, but you leave out the part that there is a little icon next to that ranking that says the sales are attributed to "bulk sales" which means the numbers aren't exactly true. When you have groups buying mass quantities of a single book it's not a true ranking.

Even with the 24-hour-a-day media fawning, McCain is nearly even with Obama. Even with all that cash, Obama can't pull away. He barely even won his own party's nomination after losing 9 of the final 13 contests to Clinton. Fact is, Obama is a deeply flawed candidate. He's a first-rate con man to be sure, but nothing close to presidential material. When Michelle Obama complains that "Our souls are broken," she is referring first and foremost to her husband. He's empty. He stands for nothing.

Obama, the celebrity presidential candidate, probably has a better future as a Hollywood actor than being the president of the US.

While the daily Gallup poll http://www.gallup.com/poll/109564/Gallup-Daily-McCain-Obama-Tied-44.aspx shows the candidates neck and neck, it is a far different story at the on-line instant poll http://www.bop-o-rama.com. Obama's Bop count passed 250,000 this morning while McCain's Bop count still is lingering around 150,000. Did this vacation hurt or help Obama? Is Hillary plotting a floor fight? I hope he is not jet lagged.

Dan says Obama can't be president because he has no war experience. Would that be the combat experience of w. Bush, Cheney Remsfeld, etc none of whol have ever seen combat.
McCain has a remarkable life story, but I'm voting for someone who can make a huge difference in how we interact and are viewed by the rest of the world.
When it comes to 'terrorists' electing a black american with first generation african roots instantly negates 90% of the things terrorists use to line up support gainst us.

I know this falls into the category of superficial trivia, but much of what passes for political "news" coverage these days (such as videos of candidates on their vacations) does tend to fall into that category.
So in that spirit, I couldn't help but noticing that Obama was wearing a White Sox hat, which means that elected, he would be the first White Sox president (among other firsts).
Other 20th and 21st century presidents have had affiliations with particular baseball teams, owning them (G.W. Bush; Texas Rangers), broadcasting for them (Reagan; Cubs), or simply being a fan -- but none before Obama has been associated with the White Sox.

As a foreigner I see MUCH more understanding of the world in Obama than in McCain, who has repeatedly shown that he has little grasp of the political(and geographical) realities on the issues that matter the most at the moment. So if McCain is supposed to have foreign policy experience, I'd say its time to change the yardstick its measured by.

Obama Rips... That a good videos of him bodysurfing Halona or Sandy's. He seems to be having a great time and he can bodysurf. You don't need fins if you have a good first stroke. The video just shows that Obama can improvise and still be successful.. By they way that's a small day at Halona. About 60 % of the beach accidents on Oahu occurs at that beach. Halona produces the most para and quadra plegics of any beach in the islands.

After all, shall we use this platform of misinformation to make our decisions. I would imagine you might be overweight, lazy, don't care about the environment, complaining about higher taxes, and ALSO complaining about the lack of assistance you receive from your government. Before you complain about higher taxes, take a look at another country among the G8, and see if they have soem form of health care.

Quit interesting those who dont know the regenerative effects of bodysurfing will never know the inherent value it offers...and your comments are truly an example of how little you know about how diverse Obama's experiences are.
And one more example of speaking about things you dont know anything about
Your judgments are from your limited perspective and quite prejudiced.
How refreshing to see his actions are not based on wanting to create a fake image of patriotism and duty and being authentic. Authenticity is beyond your lomed judgments.
Obama enjoyed the break in a most renewing manner and he is not president yet so he can do whatever he likes to relax a few days with friends and the ocean.
At least put a thin veneer on your jealousy.
