ABC News has an interview with former President Bill Clinton in which he says he's not a racist for the things he said during the Democratic primary race between his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.
That's just how topsy turvy the rise of Obama has made the world for the man once called the "first black president." He now has to protest that he's not a racist.
ABC caught up with Clinton in Liberia where he was traveling to take in the good works of his foundation.
Clinton clearly was barely able to repress his anger during certain parts of the interview but did for the most part. He took a few shots at the media, blaming us for some of the problems experienced by his wife in her unsuccessful run for the White House.
But he held back quite a bit, clearly not wanting to say anything for which he could later be blamed if Sen. Barack Obama, the assumed Democratic presidential nominee, fails to win the presidency.
Clinton promised to unburden himself in "January once the election is over." Does he know something we don't? We thought the election would be over in November.
In any event, despite his desire to stay on the high road, a little of the old Clinton anger did seep out. He was asked about Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina who reporter Kate Snow first identified as a one-time Clinton supporter. Clyburn is Congress's highest ranking African-American.
As Snow writes on the ABC News website:
When Clyburn's name was brought up as a supporter who criticized the former president, Clinton interrupted to say Clyburn was never a supporter of the Clintons.
When Clyburn's description was changed to "longtime friend," Clinton replied, "Used to be."
Pressed on whether Clinton "severely damaged" his standing with African-Americans as Clyburn has claimed, Clinton snapped, "Yeah, that may be. By the time he got through working on it, that was probably true."
Looks like Clyburn burned Clinton's the bridge to the 21st century.

Comments
No, Bill Clinton is not a racist. He did however expose himself as Lord of the Plantation, basking in the ether of the fondness that his subjects felt for him
When reality took hold people began to push back from him, and lo the angel lost his luster. Clinton once responded to the question why black people liked him by chuckling and saying "I guess they like me because I like them." chuckle chuckle. So all 20 million black people liked Bill Clinton, and he liked all 20 million?

Thank you Bill! Thank you Hillary!

In the Gospel according to St. Barack and his disciples, the Clintons and even Geraldine Ferraro are racists.
In fact, any questioning of the Chosen One, even by card-carrying Liberals, and His disciples both inside and outside the media cry "racist" in an effort to shut down the questions
That's how divisive His campaign is.

True, Clinton is not a racist. He did, however, inject race into his wife's campaign to pander to racists.

President Clinton loves all races.

Obama (and his minions)turned remarks around that Bill Clinton made and cried "racist." Idiots bought into this line, which then became "true," even though it wasn't. (Reporters have complicity here, in my own opinion.)
It was disgraceful. And apparently, what happened then was why McCain jumped so vehemently last week when Obama tried it again. Nice to see his ears get pinned back-- hoist on his own petard, as it were.
I am not foreseeing Bill Clinton doing any campaigning for Obama, that's for sure!

Yes Bruce, we need a non-divisive party like the Lily White Republicans. The only way to handle race issues is the Republican way : Don't run any African Americans. That really brings the country together, that's true unity.
There is not ONE African American Republican in elected Federal or State-wide office in this nation. Not one. How does RNC Bruce have the nerve to lecture on divisiveness?

Thanks David Axelrod and Barack Obama. You changed the legacy of a president who was known to champion black rights into a racist. We won't forget come November.

While I don't believe that the Clintons are racists, they allowed that nasty part of them (which by the way is in all of us) to come out. It's what happens during a competition for a position. I'm sure there are many of you out there who don't consider yourself racists, but think back to any episode where you were in competition for your livelihood and how you behaved. This goes for everyone, black, white, latino, asian, etc.
While Bill may not believe he said anything racists, his behavior was so. Maybe he thought Obama would be just a flash in the pan like Jesse Jackson when he mentioned Jesse's concerning Obama's victory in SC. Also, Sen Clinton's slighting of Obama's victory in SC and subsequent wins didn't endear her to many Blacks.

Bill is no racist he is just good old BILL. He did what he had to do to make sure Hillary Soprano lost to Obama. He will do what he has to do to make sure Obama loses to McCain. Not that he has to do much. Obama and his "Brain Trust" are doing a good job of that. Not to mention the help he is getting from "TURN THE LIGHTS OFF PELOSI" I that one act she has done more to help elect Republicans. Way to go 'TURN THE LIGHTS OFF PELOSI"

I wonder what all the black Republican Congresscritters, Senators & candidates think about all this talk about racism?
The GOP: Women with big hair, and the men in white shoes who love them, all looking to have a toe-tapping good time in Minneapolis. Take your time and stall in the Minneapolis Airport.

Clinton fell victim to the Obama campaign's strategy to shut up any criticism of their candidate by shouting "racist" any time he's criticized. His economic plan is idiotic. RACIST! His health care plan will ruin health care in the U.S. RACIST! His brother, father and step-father were or are Muslims. RACIST. He trashed America in his Berlin speech. RACIST. Well, Mr. Clinton, welcome to the Obama brand of free speech.

it appears Bill only likes blacks when they vote for him. He does not get the fact that being subtle about race is still racist. Bill thought he had a second chance at the interns in the W.H. Or He thought he would be able to wash his legacy clean on his wife's legacy. He thought he owned the democratic party. If he is the most successful president in the democratic party , then try harder people. Why is it Dems bury their head when they espouse Clinton. He would be in jail if he wasn't the President at the time. Good by Bill. Hello Barrack.
Posted by: gabrowne | August 4, 2008 1:18 PM
Bill claims he's not racist.
Well, in the sense that, he's an equal opportunity hustler, that is true.
He will hustle and try to s---- anyone and everyone who tries to get in the y of his third term. It was incidental that Barack is who he is. If Gore had run, Bubba would have attacked him.
It is really over for the Clintons, however. America's attention span is too short. By the time 2012 rolls 'round, even Monica will be a faint recollection rather than a vivid image.
Bill, you really weren't that great, even apart from the flopping of the johnson in the intern's face.
NAFTA.
ADEPA.
DOMA
Kicking all those kids off AFDC.
The Ruanda debacle.
At some very visceral level, you must really resent the fact that Barack Obama really is what you only could pretend to be.

Clinton promised to unburden himself in "January once the election is over." Does he know something we don't?
Clinton already said publicly that there were documents that he's seen that were proof that Obama planned to go after the Clintons as racists from the very begining, it was planned prior to doing it. Obama could never have pulled it off with out help from his biggest supporters LIB MEDIA! Now, the media is playing dumb about it ha, asking stupid question ...does he know something we don't ha ha, OH PLEASE...YOU ALL KNOW SOMETHING THAT WE ALL KNOW ha!

Bill is laying in wait to get his revenge on Hussein. A former president is not the guy to piss off.

Bill stated an historical fact, "Jesse Jackson won SC too." There is nothing racist about stating an historical fact but Obama did everything he could to pretend this simple fact of history was somehow racist.....it is not racist at all and the fact that Bill still thinks he needs to say that he is not racist just goes to show how many stupid people live in this country and are dumb enough to be convinced by Obama and his company that a simple historical fact is somehow racist. There should be a question for voters to answer before voting to prove that they are intelligent enough to cast a vote and this year that question should be, "Do you believe the statement "Jesse Jackson won SC too. " is racist." Anyone that answers "yes" should not be allowed to vote on the grounds that they are too easily misled into believing foolishness. Obama and only Obama (including Obama Campaign) played the race card through out the primary and hopefully we the people are smarter than we were when somehow Bush was elected twice, and we will not be dumb enough to elect a racist, sexist divider of people like Obama. This man has done nothing but play the race card and once he loses the election he just may find that even his Senate seat should be hard to win back.

As a long time Clinton supporter I was initially distressed by the poor showing and weird tactics of of Hillary during some of her earliy primaries. Bill did not help by flaring up and making some ill-advised comments. It appears that the Clintons were indeed out strategized and surprized by the Obama team. I hung in there with Hillary until the end, but finally gave up when desperation set in and the tactics begame distasteful to me. I did not like the FL/MI tactics by the Clintons...rules are rules. The had agreed to not campaign in those states because the results were to be allowed due to rule violations. When it became clear that she was going to lose the primaries, then she rallied her followers around a revote, and then a validation of the already disallowed results of those two primaries. That is when I bailed out. It was not fair.
I have since decide to back the Democratic party candidate because he is not the demon that so many are trying to make him out to be, and because the last 7.5 years of Republican rule in the US have been the most disastrous in my 57 years of life.

Does anyone in this country know the meaning of the word 'racist'? I submit they do not. If they did, the ignorant comments that spill out of their mouths would be 'checked at the door', as they say. To repeat, ad naseum, here is the dictionary definition of the word racist: No one is immune: a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. Racism cuts both ways, Corky.

If elected, Obama will be America's first biracial president. Having a biracial president who is both black and white as our president. What a marvelous gift that would be in healing the racial divide.
But Obama is not that biracial presidential candidate; nor is he the black candidate he claims to be. I find it offensive that Senator Obama is denying his "whiteness" while embracing his "blackness". He should embrace both. That he has campaigned as a black candidate only shows that he, more than any other candidate in this race is a racist.
In 2000, I was appalled at what the Republicans did in Florida and swore I would never vote for anyone who affiliates with a party that let all that happened happen. I am appalled that Howard Dean and the Dems have basically done the same thing with Obama. Couple this with Mr. Obama playing the race card -- saying he is black when he is bi-racial, I cannot vote for McCain nor Obama. Clinton is not a racist. Obama, Axelrod, Dean and the Democratic party have stolen the election from the Democratic voters and from the US. It is Mr. Obama who is racist and playing the race card to his advantage.

Not entirely true. The following former congressmen are African-American Republicans:
JC Watts - Oklahoma
Gary Franks - Connecticut

I think it is such a shame to call Bill Clinton a racist...Obama, his surrogates, and Obama-Media behaved absolutely disgraceful. The dem party big tops never said a word to defend the only dem president in 1/2 a century who served two terms in the White House. It's disgusting.
Obama and his band of mean-spirited villains knew that they needed to DESTROY Bill Clinton's relationship with black people, and oh yes, they did everything in their power to do so. I paid attention to the entire primary season very closely, and it is ATROCIOUS how the Obama camp treated Hillary and Bill.
I will never dare reward Obama's actions with a vote.
EVER.

I am an "African American". (I use quotations cause I think the whole concept of race was designed to divide and conquer the middle class and poor , encourage victim hood and guilt)
BILL CLINTON IS NOT A RACIST!!!
However as the "first black president" he broke an unspoken, unwritten contract (a dirty little secret I'll let those of you who think that you are "white people" in on), we defend you (Bill) no matter what (which we did) and you never compare us to one another ( "black people" find that kind of comparison "uncouth" not racist, but unfortunately inner city schools are so bad "uncouth" is not in most of our vocabulary)
Much like the contract that Obama broke when he commented on Jerusalem (non Jews are not supposed to talk about things they discuss about such subjects (no matter how well meaning, well informed or how good an idea it is) Bill Clinton broke the contract we "signed" when almost all of us except the professional black people on Fox and recently hired by the RNC to do the talk show circuit (hmmn is that racist?, naw just uncouth.)
If we let you (Bill) "in our little club" you do not quantify any accomplishments of a member of our club (even if you disagree with them) with someone else "in the club". Many "black people" feel that the fact that we discussed whether a black football coach, basketball coach ect... could win was evidence that we cannot allow such things to be discussed lest they be used as an excuse by people who are racist to deny us a job.
Unfortunately, most "black people" are too sensitive about this subject which hopefully (much like it did for Irish Americans after Kennedy won) will go away when Obama wins, does a good job (like all other true "first" presidents who have to because they are the "test case" to see if we are fit to be Americans.
I actually supported Hillary to the end. I do think we will not be able to move on until we have a "first real black president" and a "first woman president" and people stop thinking it's such a big deal.
I attended an Obama rally at the end of the primary and the thing that brought a tear to my eye was that no white people stared at me, gave me a funny look or clutched their purse.
That's when I realized why so many "black people" supported Obama. I realized he's no J.F.K. but he's our J.F.K., just like what he meant to Irish Americans, he is the means we can truly be called just - AMERICAN
Once again, unlike the many "quota black republican strategists" the RNC has employed recently, I do not speak for all "African Americans", but I WILL ALWAYS love Bill Clinton "the first black president" and the sooner he realizes that the sooner we can define what his true legacy was - The President who was willing to compromise to make our life better.
If anyone quotes this you are breaking our unwritten, unspoken contract.
