Bill Clinton's night at party convention: The Swamp

The Swamp

The Democrats appear to be getting their Clintons in a row.

The former president will take a turn at the podium of the Democratic National Convention the night before Sen. Barack Obama accepts the party's presidential nomination.

Our colleague, Peter Nicholas of the L.A. Times, cites "a senior Democrat familiar with convention plans'' as saying that Bill Clinton will address delegates on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Since Sen. Hillary Clinton suspended her presidential campaign in June, "it has been unclear whether her husband would even appear at the Denver event,'' Nicholas notes. "Bill Clinton campaigned actively for his wife and was angered about the way they were treated during the primary season. Hillary Clinton will address the convention on Aug. 26 -- and she plans to campaign for Obama today in Las Vegas..

While Bill Clinton "was a favorite of the African American community, the two-term president was criticized by some black leaders for seeming to marginalize Obama. he notes. "At one point, Clinton likened Obama's victory in South Carolina to that of Jesse Jackson two decades before.''

Clinton also has voiced something short of a resounding vote of confidence in Obama during a recent interview with ABC News.

Obama said Thursday that he had spoken with Bill Clinton earlier this week -- while negotiations were underway over the role the Clintons will play at the convention. "He's been very supportive," Obama said of the former president. "I couldn't ask him to be any more gracious than he has been, and supportive, since the campaign ended."

Appeasing Bill was a necessary evil. Not inviting him to speak would have been an utter fiasco.

We wouldn't want Bill to pout the rest of his life, would we?

Fully looking forward to this convention. It's gonna be a trip!

Go ahead and give them their few minutes of spotlight which they love so dearly. The Clintons are world class narcissist but they can also convince a lot of folk that they are on to something. Let him speak and then go to the backwoods of our nation and bring in some votes. Yesterdays news might do us a bit of good.

I'm a life long democrat, but I do not understand why the party has to bow down to Bill and Hil as though they were king and queen? If Bill has the right to speak, what about Jimmy Carter? If Hil is going to speak, than what about all of the other candidates who ran for the nomination? All the Clintons are trying to do is to hold on to power so Hil can trash Obama in four years when she runs again for the nomination!

If we didn't have term limits Bill would still be the president.

Anybody find out yet when W will speak at the GOP convention?? Sometime around 3 in the morning one day?? Or will they even let him speak at all?? They sure don't want to remind the American people what a terrible GOP Presidency did to this country for the past 8 years.

See, at least we Democrats are proud of our former President. We want him to speak. Republicans can't run far enough AWAY from theirs.

We are Democrats and we honor those of us, who have electoral successes. Former President Clinton was a great Democratic President, just as former President Carter was. Senator Clinton was a candidate for our nomination of the Presidency and she ran an invigorating and good campaign, for the most part. They aught to be presented to our national base, as a courtesy and as an inspiration. They are Democrats and they will be supporting Senator Obama from now and in November. I welcome them to our podium at our convention, we need every man and woman on board, if Senator Obama is to elected our next President. We sure do not want another 4 years of stupid solutions to complex problems, a Republican specialty !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Speaking of "proud Democrats", when is the Dems 2004 VP nominee going to speak at their convention?

You know him. He ran for the Dem nomination in 2008.... His name sounds like "Don Jedwards".

Where is this man? Why has he disappeared from the Swamp?

Hillary is going to give John McCain the win. She does not and will not let Obama win. Bill and Hillary are a great team. Hillary should be the nominee. Obama is dropping in the polls. McCain is starting to rise. Hillary is going to the convention to get her name in. She wants to run in 2012. Bill and Hillary kept Kerry out in 2004 and they will keep Barack out in 2008.

God Bless America. God help us if Obama gets elected.

I agree with you.

Why don't you read the article again. This is about Bill Clinton and the Democrats. By the way, speak for yourself and when you declared " Republicans can't run far enough AWAY from theirs". You have no idea what you're talking about.

OK, they have to invite him to speak.

After all, he's not a disgraced pariah Republican like, well, one who comes to mind is Richard Nixon.

However, maybe this will be the retirement party for the Clintons.
Just tell them: "You're beautiful. You were great. We love you. Now, goodby!"

BobHuseininAtlanta, After reading the crap in this blog how can you say that the Dems are proud of their past presidents. Jealous of their popularity is more like what I see here. Afraid of the high esteam most Americans hold for the Clintons. If by some miracle Obam wins the GE you all will see what a stupid mistake you made by your blind reverance to someone so unready to be president.

ARTICLE>While Bill Clinton "was a favorite of the African American community, the two-term president was criticized by some black leaders for seeming to marginalize Obama.
*It seems to me, that marginalizing your opponent is what you are SUPPOSE to do, in a political race. That's not racism!

ARTICLE>Clinton also has voiced something short of a resounding vote of confidence in Obama during a recent interview with ABC News.

*WHERE'S THE BEEF??????

"Bill Clinton campaigned actively for his wife and was angered about the way they were treated during the primary season.

Angry about the way "they were treated"? You mean not just a slam dunk, no questions asked nomination? It's a campaign, remember? Hill and Bill dished out some pretty negative treatment as well. Guess if you can't take the heat, you were wise to get out of the kitchen :)

Clintons in a row>Hillary is putting her name in for nomination, while Bill is on the sidelines second guessing Obama's ability to lead. Hillary is giving McCain's camp the ability to use a tape of her saying > McCain has experience, while all Obama has is a speech from 2002 ha ha ha, yep, those ducks are lined right up!

OBAMA SAYS-"I couldn't ask him to be any more gracious than he has been, and supportive, since the campaign ended."

AFTER playing the race card on him, you're right, you COULDN'T ask for more than what he's giving.....it ain't much, as we all can see!

After having his reputation trashed by the Obamabots, it's only right that Bill should speak at the convention. Hopefully the super delegates will come to their senses and refuse to rubber-stamp the DNC's choice.

I doubt that the Clintons will ever forgive or forget what Obama has done (and vice versa). The Clintons are just maneuvering themselves so that they won't get blamed when Obama loses in November. They also want to be sure that the window of opportunity is still opened for Hillary in 2012.
