Bill Kristol, conservative commentator and magazine publisher, tells FOX News Channel today that retired Army Gen. Colin Powell, who served as President Bush's Secretary of State, plans to endorse Democratic candidate Barack Obama -- and "may well'' do so at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
"I am hearing from people who talk directly to the Obama campaign that Colin Powell will endorse Senator Obama and he may well give a speech at the Democratic National Convention explaining his endorsement of Obama,'' Kristol, who also is a contributor to FOX News, said on the cable news channel today.
"People are very confident that Powell will endorse Obama, and they think it may well be the case that Powell will speak on Wednesday at the Democratic Convention,'' Kristol added. "That's the national security night, that's also the night the vice presidential nominee will speak."
Kristol said this of such a move by Powell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who once was considered a candidate for commander-in-chief himself: Powell "obviously served the first term in the Bush administration; I don't think that was a happy experience honestly for Secretary Powell, and, for whatever reason, I think he has decided that he is going to endorse Obama."
For his part, Powell told ABC News this in response:"I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol's musings.... I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear."
And Powell wrote this in an email to the Washington Post: "I am not attending either political convention,. As I have said for some time, I know both candidates and I am studying their positions and statements. I have not decided who I will vote for."
So what about that endorsement?
Zbigniew Brezinski, national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter, and one who stays in touch with the "realist'' camp of Republican foreign policy experts such as Brent Scowcroft, who served the former President Bush, told the Huffington Post this about a Powell endorsement of Obama: "I sort of expect he will.''

Is Powell gonna apologize for his shameful performance at the U.N.?
Don't tell me Obama's the anti-war candidate, kids. He ain't.

I wouldn't buy it. Powell's spokesperson denies it and he has said all along eh won;t endorse in this election. Just a move by nasty Kristol to put poor Colin on spot.

Is Hillary going to apologize for voting for the war? Is she going to apologize for not having the political courage to vote NO? Until she does, this is her war as much as it is Powell's.
I won't ever vote for a candidate that has the blood of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis on her hands and who will not apologize for it. Not fpor President. Not for Vice President.

Well, I just saw on the ABC site that Powell is saying he's NOT going to the Dem convention, so that doesn't sound like an endorsement to me!
And when are national outlets going to start reportingon the blackmail from the Obama campaign to get tickets to the stadium? Turns out to get tickets (at least for many people) you have to volunteer first. Hmmm, forced volunteering. There's an oxymoron!

Yeah, right -- and that will be right after Powell apologizes for his shameless role in bringing about "Don't Ask/Don't Tell"

The next time William "the bloody" Kristol is right about something will be the first.

Vote on Hillary for what? Stop dreaming she is out of the running for V.P. and rightfully so after all the mudslinging she did during the primary election. She is already scheduled to speak on a different night than the candidate for VP will be speaking... Let it go!

I can hear Mika Brezinski (the gal on "Morning Joe" - of MSNBC), saying "Oh daddy, let me break the news on Morning Joe!

No Obama, Hillary voted, Nika etc etc:
As this will likely be closely contested, I strongly suggest you get over it.

Nobody really cares who endorses who anyways. It is as meaningless as the points are on "Who's Line is It Anyways", they might make you feel good about your candidate but you don't vote for endorsers, you vote for candidates and that is what really matters in the end!

Beth,
At least Obama doesn't require loyalty oaths to attend supposed public gatherings like the republics did!
Posted by: Neal | August 13, 2008 7:31 PM
Okay, if we're gonna be stuck on stupid about the Bushies, we're gonna lose.
What don't you get about POWELL LYING ABOUT WMD AND CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE IF YOU CRITICIZED THE WAR YOU WOULD BE PILLORIED?
And he's been given a bigger role than the woman who was a dead tie with the candidate SELECTED by the party rulers?
It's this type of misogyny this hatred, this bull headedness which will bring the party down.
It already has.
And I hope the delegates stand and TURN THEIR BACKS on the drunken senator from massachusetts.

Well, why did the Messiah keep voting to fund the war?
WHY DID HE VOTE FOR FISA SO THE GOVERNMENT CAN SPY ON EVERYTHING YOU AND I TYPE?
Hillary voted against it.

I would hope Colin Powell does not endorse Obama..I think he is above making a choice just over race....
Posted by: rc cola | August 13, 2008 8:24 PM
Nope, it's not true. He hasn't endorsed anyone to date, but he won't be at either convention.

If true, that's great. Mr. Powell was played like a violin by the Bush-Cheney regime. To come around to a different position is a remarkable turn of events and, being that this is still America, Mr. Powell has that right. Welcome aboard Mr. Powell, we, Democrats, can use effective and efficient individuals, like him.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

barack is best to avoid any connection to powell. a once great leader with conviction who sold out to the war mongers. spineless and shameless. not very obama-like.

Regardless, Powell should be running for President on the Republican ticket. McCain is aweful. It's too bad the racist wings of that mideval party wont stomach an ethnic national candidate.

This would be like Ron Santo in a Cardinals uniform, Michael Jordan playing for the Wizards. Obama sure does need the help, but Say It Ain't So.

As usual, Kristol's wrong. And the Swamp went along with him to fulfill their helping Obama for the day quota.

Kristol wrong again? What a shock!

Frankly my dear I don't give a damn who Colin Powell endorses. As Bogart famously said.
Powell has always been a liberal and it is not surprising for him to back B Hussein Obama.
But, for his own good why interject himself it will ruin his remaining reputation.
After the book The Case Against Barack Obama anyone who endorses Obama has to be looked at strangely.
Obama what a strange agent indeed. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Kristol's a chickenhawk blowhard to be sure. There's no guarantee that anything he says is either truthful or sincere.
On the other hand, that doesn't mean everything he says is wrong. As I read the story above, the only part of Kristol's statement that's been undermined is the assertion that Powell would speak at the DNC. Powell denies that, but has not denied that he might endorse Obama.
Poor wingnuts. Your tiny little heads are going to explode. You adore Kristol when he tells you how great your murderous war is. You lavish praise on Powell when it suits you. Yet when Kristol says Powell's going to endorse Barack, you seem to explode ala George Wendt in that "Da Bears" SNL segment when he tried to figure out who would win a contest between Ditka and Jordan. Good stuff.

Smitty, Powell's decision not to run for office has nothing to do with racism in the Republican Party. He has consistently resisted all calls to run - period. No amount of support is going to turn him into a candidate unwillingly.
*
I hope he is simply waiting for the neo-cons to be swept out of power before running as a conservative with a classical liberal (versus a modern, progressive) bend. I know I would vote for him if he did. Heck, I would vote for him right now before voting for any other candidate.

Watch Bush's War and learn that Powell was one of the only people in the White House with any sense. He quit and is probably pissed enough about what Rove, Cheney and Rumsfeld did to do what he can to help throw the bums out on their ears. History will be much kinder to him than the rest of that administration.

Uh, no, you only need to sign up for the site. Like Kristol, why let the truth get in the way of what you say?
How's your progress for getting Republican convention tickets going?

Crud ~ You need to be brought up to date on the Colin Powell situation. He was fed lies before giving that report.
John W. ~ I'm with you with Colin Powell. To me, Powell is such an honorable man, something we haven't seen in office since.............someone let me know????
