McCain on Obama: 'The taxman cometh': The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Heading into the televised Saddleback Civil Forum tonight, Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama are waging a less civil duel on paid television, with McCain rolling out a new ad today calling Obama the "taxman'' and Obama accusing McCain of reading from the same economic book as President Bush, paying the price of a costly war.

"Celebrity, yes... Ready to lead, no,'' says the female narrator of the new McCain ad today. It warns that Obama's taxes "could break your family budget.''

With a nod to both Eugene O'Neill and the Beatles, the McCain ad warns of Obama: "The Taxman Cometh.''

Obama has acknowledged that it will take higher taxes to pay for the health care coverage that he is proposing for all Americans, but vows to tax wealthier Americans more while offering the middle class and lower-income taxpayers a break. McCain, who has opposed federal funding of prescription drugs under Medicare and proposes tax incentives to help uninsured people find health care, has pledged to avert new taxes during his term as president. Obama supports a windfall profits tax on the oil industry, promising to use the money for middle-class tax relief. McCain opposes such a tax.

The contrast is one of the key divisions that McCain hopes to exploit during a campaign which he maintains will reveal "stark'' differences between the two.

"The press warns,' the taxman cometh,''' says the narrator, quoting from the Wall Street Journal. Calling Obama's plans a "recipe for economic disaster,'' it cites the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "Higher taxes, higher gas prices, an economic disaster...

"That's the real Obama.''

Didn't look like a family making more than 250 g there to me.
That's the people who would pay taxes under the Obama plan.
McSame is very recklss.

Under McCain, the prolongation of the unnecessary Iraq war and the starting of new wars will tax Americans much more than anything Obama will do. And, Obama is sincere about taxing the rich and helping the less than rich and the poor.

Obama has his sights set on the right objectives. McCain does not. Obama is pro-Americans and America. I believe McCain fundamentally is not - he is about McCain. And, he is like Bush - I would say a "mini-Bush" or Bush-lite", as I see him as being even weaker as a leader. And he is about anger, war, the rich and the big corporates. He is about using "wedge issues" on Americans to divide them and conquer them and then use Americans for his own ends.

And worse, he will be more myopic than Bush and more of a follower and complainer on the world stage ("if China and India don't do it we don't have to do it either" - sounds like my kids. "Obama is an empty suit and a celebrity" - sounds like a teenager being jealous.) Wouldn't it be better to just lead the world? And to the right place in a way that is consistent with American objectives?

For those that have been brain washed to think only "Republican and Fox approved thoughts" (and worse), this election will be frustrating. We will hear a lot of shrill noises from their petty corner. Why? Because they will have to come back to reality - out of the rabbit hole. They will have to start bearing responsibility too - no more telling everyone its my way or the highway for you.

This will be an easy decision for voters who are in the real world, hearing real talk, who fundamentally understand what is right for America.

" McCain...has pledged to avert new taxes during his term as president. "

A few weeks ago, he told George Stephanopoulos: "There is nothing that’s off the table. I have my positions, and I’ll articulate them. But nothing’s off the table."

McCain cant stop the Well-oiled Obama campaign...

Their organization on the world stage, internet and grassroots level will never be matched in the slightest

He cant beat Obama on his issues because a majority of Americans, wether they like Obama or not, support his stance on issues like healthcare, increase taxes on people making over $250,000/year, the economy etc....

So what is mccain to do.....why, paint your opponent as the antichrist....ya, thats the ticket, keep up the politics of the past and play upon peoples fears.....Bush did it to McCain and his wife, now its his turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They keep calling him "the one", the taxman cometh, ridicule his name for meaning, blessed one, and showing pictures in ads of his face over charleton hestons......

they want to paint him as sympathetic to al quaida, like they did at the beginning of the year with a web video to all the registered people on mccains website......and as the antichrist.....

pathetic

The People are speaking with their contributions, not the Corporations !! That is the refreshing aspect to Senator Obama's campaign, it is purely democratic !! Come on, some of you more sensible Republicans, give Senator Obama a chance !! On his worst of days, he will not be as bad as President Bush was, on his best day !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

McCain's plan taxes the middle class and lower class at higher rates than Obama's does. Obama's taxes the upper class at a higher rate than McCain does.

The McCain ads are intentionally simplistic and misleading.

Obama's economic plan does NOTHING to reduce our budget deficit or debt... which is bad for the middle class. Tax on windfall profits mean higher gas prices. The Dems also want to increase federal gas tax to beef up the Highway Trust Fund. That hurts the low and middle income. Obama has not specifically addressed the Alternative Minimum Tax which hurts millions of middle income families.

McCain's commercial is right on target.

So is McCain saying he will abolish all taxes? If not, then he has little room to speak.

This one is sure to stir up some debate on the issues. It is not just about raising taxes, it is how the tax cash is going to be spent. It is time for Obama to come back from his Hawaiian vacation and start hitting back. At the realtime online poll at http://www.bop-o-rama.com He is really getting bopped. Where is his base? To annoyed to Bop McCain? As for the commercials the campaigns are playing, McCain's are far more hard hitting. Negative? There is a fine line between negative and clever. O.K. it is a pretty fine line.

Obama>vows to tax wealthier Americans more.

They are taxed more now. He didn't say we aren't taxed.

Obama first talked about his health care plan during debateds. He planned to make Mandatory Health Care for children. Hillary was the one who had UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. Obama's camp said that she had them up against a wall when they were trying to get her to support them after she dropped out. Now, he's talking of Universal Care (an idea that Clinton told us would be MANDATORY).

There has been NO EXPLANATIONS of his Health Care plans period. We know how well Hillary's plan turned out years ago. It didn't sell to the American people.

I wouldn't support any Universal Health care or manditory care at all, not even for kids. Never MANDATORY, not even to garner lower prices, you have no way to judge someones financial abilities to make anything mandatory.

As often as he changes his mind, and little as he lets out about what he stands for and plans he has for us (things we've found out about all on our own behind the scenes), I wouldn't trust much of anything he tries to sells us. Look how unreliable he's been to his own followers....if he'll let them down as much as he has, you can't believe theirs any love lost for the rest of us.

How is BO's plan of the a high individual payroll/income tax rate of 54% going to create any jobs?

Think about it.

How frequently did Obama go to church? Once a decade, that he did not hear his (as he stated) mentor talk ugly in his "church" about white people?

It took Obama 20 years to react to the bigotted, prejudiced Rev. Wright!

Obama took Wright' phrase, "The Audacity of Hope" and used that as his book's title!

There is nothing holy about Rev. Wright. There is nothing holy about Trinity "Church".

The hate spilling forth from the mouth of Obama's mentor is despicable.

The sad part of all of this is the complicit agreement of reporters local and national who fail to fully engage Obama on this matter.

Just like the John Edwards story, the "mainstream" press is not doing investigative reporting.

Who isn't ready for Bush to leave office (though history will redeem him); who isn't struggling and worried about the economy?

Turning this country over to an unproven young man is not the answer.

Nor, could one say turning it over to an old man!

Obama is UNPROVEN, TOO LIBERAL, WILL TAX The middle income people (let's face it...it is the middle income people that sustain the economy, not the rich) and leave this country descimated.

Wow, shame on both parties for putting up TWO crappy candidates.

They are taxed more now. He didn't say we aren't taxed.

If you're wealthy there Health Care...you sure have a lousy CPA. There are more ways to shelter your money than ways to spend it.

Also...you are already paying health care for the poor. Why do you think your premiums are so high?

BO claims he will only raise taxes on those making over $250K. When Harry and Nancy drop the bill into his lap that raises taxes on the middle class and hikes capital gains taxes up - will he veto it? Not a chance.

Hey, McCain. Talking about taxes, how is it that you get a $58,000 pension and don't pay any taxes on it, and I pay taxes on my pension and my Social Security checks??? whiteagle38

McCain STILL can't get the numbers straight. On the Rick Warren thing when referring to the Marines lost at their compound in Beirut he said "well over 100 were killed." 100??? Try 248 SENATOR!!!...then some people talk ON AND ON AND ON about how Obama said there were 57 states... an understandable mistake given the grueling campaign!!! And he started talking fast as if he was excited (a rarity for HIM) when he was talking about how some churches were helping after Katrina...that's well and good, but what's FEMA FOR????

Penelope: REVERENED WRIGHT IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!

PENELOPE: WHY DON'T you run???? You sound as if you know it all!!!!

I have some bad news for Obam supporters: A windfall profit tax should be levied on Apple, Google, Starbucks, and almost every other publicly traded company. Profit margins at the above publicly-traded companies 10-20%. Profit margins at the publicly traded oil companies - about 7%.

Record profits make for good headlines, but there is more than the gross profit that needs to be considered. The true metric is the measurement of what is kept out of what is brought in (profit out of gross sales). Oil is a low-margin, high volume business. Always has been! Excess profits come from value-added services like computing, web publishing, and even manufacturing. And lets not forget how much profit Obama made from his book deals. 1000-2000% based on his annual Senate salary vs his income from royalties.

Any new taxes should be levied with extreme caution, because a tax levied on the "unpopular" business sector of the moment can chill every other sector of the economy.

Also, by the way, the people earning over $250,000/yr already pay the majority of income tax. Most people (about 90%) generally receive more benefits from the government then they will ever pay in. Look it up, go to irs.gov and research a little - see what income groups pay the majority of all taxes brought in. Its not the lower or middle classes.

But, for the sake of political expediency, lets just tax, tax, tax. Maybe after all is said and done in an Obama presidency, being a pan-handler will provide the greatest after-tax return.

"Wealthier Americans are taxed more now." No. They're not. Warren Buffet says it's ridiculous that his secretary pays a higher effective tax rate than he does. 2/3 of all U.S. corporations paid no tax last year. per UC Berkley 1976-2006 Bottom 90% of Americans income rose 10%. The top 1% of Americans income rose 232%. 1946-1976 Bottom 90% of Americans income rose 83%. Top 1% rose 20%. This is the first time in American history when the gross national product rose but the vast majority of American's income fell. The top 1-5% of wealthiest Americans have been given huge tax breaks and countless loop holes and that old trickle down theory isn't working. The top 1% of wealthiest Americans have a collective wealth of $19 trillion. The other 99% of 300 million Americans have a collective wealth of $17 trillion. It the top 1-5% that McCain is fighting so hard to protect with the enormous continued tax break of billions while most Americans struggle. The Bush administration and the neo cons are doing all they can to create a society of poor and rich and they are destroying the middle class in America. We've been duped and tricked into voting to destroy our own way of life while making theirs possible. These figures all come from leading U.S. economists and can be verified but not with this amount of space. Google.

Pigeon38,

First, quote your source on McCain not paying taxes on his SS.

Second, assuming you are correct, he probably has a good CPA. Which makes the broader point about BO wanting to tax the rich - the rich have options are what to do with their income to avoid taxes.

Karela,

Time to straighten out the Warren Buffet myth. He is either being ignorant or disingenous - I'll choose the latter.

As a shareholder of his corporation, Warren Buffet receives his income from capital gains and dividends and therefore pays a 15% tax rate on this income. What Mr. Buffet is not telling you is that since he is a shareholder, that income has already been taxed at 35%, so his real effective tax rate is near 45%, not the 15%.

If Mr. Buffet believes he is under taxed then he should get out his checkbook and write a check to the gov't.

Before you post some quote try to understand it.

The 2/3's of US corporations statistic was debunked this past week. Why not review all of this. Good article in dead tree version of the WSJ.

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/08/most_us_firms_avoided_taxes_re.html

Finally on the Berkley stats - those are diffeerent people coming in out of the those wealth and income brackets. During someone's lifetime, they can move from the lower income bracket into a higher income bracket and back to a lower income bracket.

YOU GET A BETTER CPA ha!

Obama stuttered and paused the entire time. The man is not a quick thinker like we need in Washington. He danced around most subjects, never really giving a concise answer other than the couple religious answers he had prepared due to presuming those would be questions.

I've never been more impressed with Senator McCain, who spoke with confidence, intelligence, without hesitation, friendliness, and an unwaivering position of protecting and loving our country.

McCain is a good, good man.

I hope everyone is intelligent enough to see that.

His answer to "what is rich" is spot on. How dare Obama determine what is enough money for someone? How dare he, over and over, say, "the rich people don't need their money anyway?"

How dare he.

Those who earn it have the right to keep it, spend it, donate it WHERE they want and not where Obama deems necessary.

Think about it -- even if everyone paid the same PERCENTAGE (which we don't), the rich people pay far more than anyone else ... dollar amount. Someone making $250k is likely paying at least $75k to $90k in taxes.

On top of that, they likely buy a more expensive car. Tag the sales tax on a $100k car, and there's another $8k in taxes.

License tags on the expensive car? Likely another $2500 to $3500 a year in plates, yet another form of tax.

Likely their house is more expensive, so they're probably paying $15k to $50k in property taxes, so all the "poor" people can drive around on well maintained streets.

There is absolutely NO need to burden the successful people in this country anymore.

As John McCain brilliantly said, I don't see any reason to redistribute the wealth. I want EVERYONE to get rich.

EVERYONE has that opportunity because this is America. Obama had that opportunity, but this isn't good enough?

Go John Go..... I look forward to meeting you as President John McCain.

AMEN.

Has anyone stopped to think whether either of these candidates are worth a vote? More taxes will come from both.

If our government can't successfully run on the current set of taxes, then cuts should be made in the areas of social & giveaway programs.

Our politicians need to stop biting the hand that feeds them: Us.

Associate>WELL SAID. It's what makes the American Dream so wonderful. Obama is trying to come in and completely change that around. I say, if someone is that miserable, go live somewhere else....with motivation, you can move your way up to a comfortable living and that's with little or no education. His BIG HEART is child like in thinking.... trying to take our money for HIS CAUSES goes above and beyond angering us all. He seems very immature for his age. Let him experiment on someone elses country.

Don't think for a minute that you aren't already paying more for the Bush "tax cuts". You pay extra for everything you buy when government deficit spending drives up the cost of credit and drives down the value of the dollar.

McBush is bent on following the same irresponsible path as Dubya because he figures the rubes who vote for him won't think it through. Plus, he knows "tax cut" makes a better soundbite than "indirect cost to taxpayers of irresponsible tax policy and deficit spending".
