'McCain's mansions:' Union-label video: The Swamp

Rolling out a half-dozen homes, the PAC is painting a picture of 'elitism.'

The Swamp

by Jill Zuckman and Mark Silva and updated.

The AFL-CIO is sending mailers to targeted voters asking how Sen. John McCain can understand the needs of working people when he and his wife are rich.

And now Brave New Films, working with the AFL-CIO and Service Employees International, plans to roll out a Web video on Monday featuring "McCain's mansions.''

(Obama may not want to talk about mansions, the GOP suggests.)

Like McCain's Phoenix condo: $4-million plus

And the Coronado, Calif., condo: $2.7 million

The ranch house in Sedona, Ariz.: $1.9 million

And the Arlington, Va., condo for work in the Capitol: $847,000.

And, oh, the shoes: Ferragamo loafers, $520.

Brave New Films plans to release its video online and to 500,000 on a list. The group is "working closely with both the AFL and with SEIU on the campaign,'' a spokesman says.

The group also suggests that this is the first time McCain's real estate has been listed in one convenient place. Sure the senior senator from Arizona will be happy to know that.

The Republican National Committee's Alex Conant responds: "Considering Barack Obama lives in multi-million dollar house bought with the help of his buddy, Tony Rezko, who is now a convicted felon, it's odd that Obama's supporters would choose to make the candidates' homes an issue."

Senator Kerry was a pauper?

If McCain and his comrades try to swiftboat Obama, (which, of COURSE they are...they're DESPERATE) they might find out it's not gonna be as easy as it was in '04!!!

Obama is a millionaire, so are the Clintons, John Kerry, and every one of the other persons serving in the Senate. If the Democrats want to eliminate millionaires from running for president, they'll never have a candidate.

Republicans call hard-working Americans "whiners" and "mental" cases?

Here's how the McCain family lives:

"Their credit card bills peaked between January 2007 and May 2008, during which time Cindy McCain charged as much as $500,000 in a single month on one American Express card and $250,000 on another, while one of their two dependent children had an AmEx card with a monthly balance as large as $50,000."

"In the June issue of Vogue magazine, Cindy McCain said she favors suits made by the German designer Escada, which typically retail for around $3,000-a-pop."

"Property records show that trusts and corporations controlled by her (Cindy McCain) and her children spent nearly $11 million between the summer of 2004 and this February on three condominiums in Phoenix and a pair outside San Diego."

SO STOP YOUR WHINING AND SHUT UP, PEOPLE OF AMERICA!!!

I don't know how you swiftboat someone who did no military service, but with friends like AFL-CIO & SEIU, Obama doesn't need enemies. This is the same-old appeal to class-jealousy to frame how people see McCain. The way I see it, he doesn't need any money and he knows he isn't going to have a post-Presidential career like Carter, Clinton or either Bush. He wants to serve his country. Like him or his positions or not, Americans aren't as stupid as AFL-CIO and SEIU would like to think.

You reich wing whack jobs don't get it. McBush is trying to paint Obama as an elitist. It is McBush's choice to take that smear and run with it. So as long as McBush is going to start using this meme, it is fair to turn it around and use it against McBush. McBush is the elitist. He admits he can't even remeber the last time he put gas in one of his many vehicles. McBush is the hypocrite. McBush is the loser, now and in November. But don't worry, he can always supplement his income by entering his wife in topless contests in Sturgis, SD.

Duh, they're all rich, does the Obama campaign think we don't know that? Obama is a millionaire, he sure wasn't until he planted his feet in Chicago politics and wrote a couple of books. Unless he lives in downstate Illinois he doesn't know or can't relate to a darn thing about my life. In the same token, I can't relate to his life either so save the gibberish that he understands me, I hear that junk from the local politicians until it makes my eyes bleed! I don't pay any attention to the local bloodsuckers either.

It's a little bit of a low blow, but certainly a fair topic considering the McCain campaign is labeling Obama as the elitist celebrity. Just because Cindy's money bought these...

But what about the 1st Mrs. McCain kicked to the curb? Tent? Tee-pee? Lean to?

You know? The one J. McC. traded in after skulking around with the beer heiress.

I thought these properties were McCains wife belongings..It is my understanding that they have a pre-nup and these are only hers..Pretty dumb of Obama's camp to bring up property..May give the Republicans more amo to really look into how Obama got his house...Seems it's well over a million also...Hum!!!Guess the barbs will get sharp from now to election day...

These union idiots are really dumb. I wonder how many union labor hours were used to install the electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywall, etc... Those hours created paychecks which went to provide for the union workers families (with a slice into the union coffers).

This is just another example of how the rich create jobs.

Proof positive USA is not a democracy. The US is a oligarchy under the name of a 'republic'.

Interesting JFK money was never a factor-

The next dollar John McCain earns will be his first. That's why he was cheating on his first wife with Cindy and eventually kicked her to the curb. He knew he needed someone who could support him because he couldn't earn his own way.

Why are poor dumb Republicans so impressed with the filthy rich and so eager to lick their boots for a few scraps from the table?

These people are like the peasants in medieval France falling to the floor when a nobleman walks past.

Hard to believe there are people like that in America in the 21st century. I'm old enough to remember when the middle-class fought to survive, and knew it was PATRIOTIC to do it.

"These union idiots are really dumb."
Terry the elitist speaks.

And fight minimum wage laws so people can't actually support and educate their families. And fight affordable healthcare so they can't keep them healthy. Yup. The rich are really helping the US worker alright. Of course, "the rich" must also include all those Hollywood liberals. Nice to see Terry supporting the Hollywood crew for a change.

Cindy is the same one that bought John's his seat in Congress for $200,000. John also gets a $58,000 pension on which he pays NO TAXES, while I pay taxes on my pension and my Social Security checks. Irregardless of his service to country, he finished at the bottom of his class, crashed three jets, killed how many of his fellow airmen, got shot down, had his wife buy him a seat in Congress. If it wasn't for his father he would have been washed out of the academy. This man is not qualified to lead this country, he hasn't even taken proper care of his own family. By the way, why doesn't he get them all together and on stage. whiteagle38

T&TA,

The Hollywood crew doesn't understand what they say, but yes all that money they throw around does create jobs. Raise the minimum wage and you will lessen the amount of work. Besides, I was talkiung about those nicely paid union workers - you know where everyone that does the same task gets paid the same no matter what the quality or quanity of their work is.

CM - Those union idiots I was referring to is the union leadership.

Maybe the press should look into the homes of the Union leaders. How about the DC37 scandal in NY and the many, many union scandals around the country. They very last thing union leaders would want is voters learning about all there perks, How about the shoes they were. So i say to all you reporters start asking these questions and taking pictures of Union Leeaders shoes and cloths. UNION LEADERS WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW STONES

This is a phenomenon that sociologists have been trying to figure out for ages. It could be that that the adulation for people of privilege by relatively poorer people is analogous to the worker bees who do everything for the queen. But in the case of the bees the queen produces all the baby bees. Ken and Barbie (aka John and Cindy) will be akin to royalty if they make it to 1600 Penn. They will automatically have the loyalty of 25% of the population who are the same people who kiss GW Bush's ring.

A whole bunch of women are willing to vote for McCain even though he has acted against their interests most of the time. The same holds true of the great white worker bees in rust belt towns throughout the Middle West and East, which have been dealt a dirty deal by the Republicans for decades. Somehow they expect things will be different with McCain. They see McCain as one of them. Right! with 7 palaces just like he has. McCain has almost as many palaces as Saddam Hussein had. The one group of voters who seem to have caught on to McCain are active duty military, who have contributed hugely to Obama's campaign. He hasn't fooled them with his fake humility and "I'm for the troops" BS, knowing that he has voted against a whole bunch of measures that were for the benefit of military personnel and veterans. They are not impressed with his mediocre military record.

The union BiG WIGS sure know how to throw the members money way-

McCain has not earned his pay in months...he's shown up for votes in the senate only 36.2% of the time.

Well this is the 2nd attempt:

CM - The union leadership are the idiots.

TTA - The higher you make teh wages and benefits, the less people will be able to afford the services or products one provides? Look no further than the auto industry - high wages/benefits with bad products - not a good combination

She took on more than her and her husband could afford. Didn't we all give them a bailout with OUR own money? Why bring that sore spot up again?!

Another thing, complaining about McCain for not getting in over his head and managing his money well is a ridiculous argument. Just because someone has money doesn't mean they haven't had to carefully manage it. Look at the people who win big lotteries, many go broke.

This ad is silly and not very effective. Complaining about Rich Folks may be Obama's supporters way of helping stay on message, but it's a sore note with many who realize Obama is a Millinaire himself.

"Well this is the 2nd attempt:
CM - The union leadership are the idiots."
Spoken like a true country club Republican elitist, Terry. Same with your bragging about a private education. You are the elitist, not the working class people.

Posted by: GEEP 12:03 AM- always crying about people making money....and always giving credit to the Republicans as being the ONLY RICH FOLK out there. Hey, Democrats are rich too.

YOu support a MILLIONAIRE Obama, because you hate those rich Republicans.....your logic is childlike. Get over your class envy! Wealth redistribution isn't the answer, getting a job and working hard for a living will serve you better.

CM - Let's get back to the subject. John McCain's six houses created plenty of construction jobs. The union leadership in their pointless ads fails to recognize that. They want to kill the goose and then complain that there are no eggs.

Country Club - hardly - not my style.

Private eductaion - Yes. My parents cared that my siblings and I rec'd a good education that would lead to opportunities and I have passed that on to my children since I want them to give them a better chance to succeed. Would you put your kids thru the CPS?

I was a union member for 4 years. As far as working CM, I put in about 50 hr weeks (as you can tell I'm not in here during most working days unless on vacation). Just because I use my mental skills and not physical skills does not mean that I don't work.

It is you liberals that have a problem with people becoming successful and getting off gov't programs.

Terry,,,,,Terry, Terry, Terry,,,,,,
My son and DL had public educations, both primary, secondary and college; She's a food scientist and he designs neuro-surgical instruments.
Let us agree that we have all worked hard.
Here's the bottom line of my opinions;
Yes, capitalism creates wealth, but not fairness.
For the US to march blindly into the global economy we need three major protections.
1. Medical care continuity
2. Retirement security.
3. Environmental protection
This means a robust Social Security System, improved not curtailed, and national health insurance.
Period. It won't work any other way. Old people are NOT insurable, and 401K managers, bankers, etc. can NOT be trusted.

CM,

I'll bet you wouldn't send your children thru today's Chicago Public School system.

Capitalism does create wealth and opportunity. It will never create fairness since people will tak advantage of the opportunities in different ways.

By tyour list, I am assuming you mean the gov't has to provide. This is where you and I will disgaree.

1. The gov't should only provide medical care to those that can't provide for themselves and it should be absolute necessary care. With proper planning people can provide their own medical care. Look at the statistics of the 47 million uninsured - that includes most of the illegal aliens, some people that can afford health insurance, but choose not to, and also those that can't afford it. Looking at those that can't afford it - see how many have cable TV, inetrnet, etc...

2. Retirement Security - once again s/b a private matter with some restrictions on investments due to economic ignorance of the American public (see opening remark on education). This will accomplish two things: high returns and generational rtransfer of wealth which will lift all boats.

3. Environmental protection - who can argue until you get to the specifics.

You basically sound like you are in favor of equalizing outcomes - the incentives of capitalism will not work under that scenario.

For those that break the trust, severe penalities.

Terry,
