DENVER - Further proof, in the midst of all the convention news, that some people are living right on the edge:
After the speech that Michelle Obama delivered at the Democratic National Convention the other night, the police in Pasco County, Fla., got a call, as Andrew Malcolm at the Top of the Ticket tells it.
A man was standing outside his RV yelling and firing a gun into the air. When Pasco County sheriff's deputies confronted him, he ran inside and wouldn't come out. A six-hour standoff ensued. SWAT forces arrived, and before long were firing riot gas (we've heard of swamp gas, but riot gas is a new one) into the home. That didn't do it. Finally, at about 5 am Tuesday, the man came out and surrendered.
According to Kevin Doll, sheriff's spokesman, the "cause'' of the man's "displeasure:"Michelle Obama's speech at the convention.
The man, his name withheld, is undergoing some mental evaluation.
Why are these stories always datelined Florida?

As much as I despise hippies, I would rather have them on my team. Unlike the GOP which go out of it's way to make overatures and appeals to the lowest common denominators of society. Racists, xenophobes, homophobes, and hate mongers of all stripes know there is one tent in which they are welcome. As long as they pull the lever for McCain, their hate is not an issue the GOP wants to discuss.

That is one of the problems America must deal with, allowing various types of phobias, to put it politely, to run rampant, across our land. Whether it be, racism, sexism, homophobia, agism, elitism, these states of mind have never been confronted, on a national level, nor on a personal level. The results are that change, healthy change, such as Senator Obama represents, is more difficult to achieve. It is time to confront our phobias and lay them to rest, America is to great an idea, for it to fall victim to narrow minds and spiteful hearts. A good beginning would be to give Senator Obama a fair evaluation, compare him to Senator McCain and his positions and I guaranty, many of you will vote for Senator Obama. His positions are light years ahead of Senator McCain's old answers to new problems. Honesty and fair-mindedness are the key to America's future and Senator Obama is the man, in whom, we can entrust that future

Hey Silva, they can't explain it, either, but fark.com has a "Florida" tag for stories like this.

Meet an example of the "Republican Base". What a proud party.

I guess this country "deserves" McBush and 4 more years of disaster.

I despise hippies, too, Jackson. Particularly the "fellow traveler" type. Good to know we can find common ground.

This core Republican Wingnut, that is not a racist, xenophobe, homophobe, hate monger, or elitist of any stripe
thought that Michelle Obama delivered a good speech. Always have to sort out those covert adjectives that democrats have perfected, but I thought that her speech was decent in tone, and delivered very well.
There is a political chasm here, wider than the Grand Canyon.

No where in the story does it specify his political affiliation.
Many Democrats as well as "progressives" and the Green Party have not embraced Michelle or Barack Obama.
WHO is it with the phobias here?
