John McCain offered an off-the-cuff remark about a top-selling book that is off-the-mark on rival Barack Obama that drew an off-the-charts response from the Democratic Party.
Friday morning, McCain was asked by a reporter for his response to the inflammatory Obama Nation by Jerome Corsi, with its discredited allegations about Obama and portrayal of the junior senator from Illinois and Christian as a radical with Muslim ties.
McCain stepped toward the reporter, repeating the question: ""The Jerome Corsi book? That book, 'Obama Nation,' Jerome Corsi, that some people are asking . .''
"Gotta keep your sense of humor," McCain replied, as reporters were lead from the room at the end of a breakfast meeting
McCain campaign spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan was ready with a clarification: The senior senator from Arizona had misheard the question, and thought he was being asked about a political ad. Democrats were just as ready with a reply.
"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," stated an e-mail from the Democratic National Committee's rapid-response team to more than 3 million on his e-mailing list. "Right now, you can take the next step by pushing back on Corsi, the media, and John McCain. Tackle this smear campaign head on."
The Obama campaign has issued a 41-page, point-by-point rebuttal entitled "Unfit for Publication" And Democrats are making a strenuous response to the book, Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality. because of lessons learned in 2004.
Corsi and John O'Neill wrote a book about the Democratic nominee, Sen. John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran: Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, which accused the swift boat commander of fabricating incidents of bravery and heroism, most of the criticism proven unfounded.

Excuse me for asking this, but I believe the American public MIGHT
have been duped by Pastor Rick, who looks silly in that goatee of his,
and he could lose some weight too......but what I am talking about is
this: you didn't mention it and nobody else, but I have a very strong
suspicion that the questions that Pastor Rick asked the two candidates
were GIVEN to both Obama and McCain in advance of the
"show"........why do I suspect this? because at one point Obama said
"I cheated here and did some research before hand.....I actually
looked at this idea ahead of time...."
he said this in response at first to one of Rick's question around the
45 minute time....

To ALL the obamakins and of course the bias CNN & MSNBC I have one simple request. Please spare me the hope and the change bull, and the Bush's third term, McSame etc… Please just tell American voters what qualifies Barack Obama to run this country. What qualifies him to oversee our $14 trillion economy, the largest on earth? What qualifies him to be commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces in a time of war? Please just give me one single solid qualification. And race does not qualify!! That would be one more than anyone including cable media has provided to date. WE ALL HAVE GROWN EXTREMLY TIRED OF MEDIA SAINTED OBAMA….
Obama keeps reaching back to Chicago political past for policy advisers, and pulling one despicable, vile, and even evil “rabbit” after another out of his hat.
The list of Barack Obama’s radical associations is long and it keeps getting longer. Some are now well-known, but many are not. They need to be.
23 years at TUCC with Jeremiah Wright and James Meeks. racist sermons on Youtube.
He chose the most radical church in the country; chose to immerse himself in hard-core ideological radicalism. Never before has this country considered such a radical leftist for its chief executive.
Michael Pfleger and his hateful and race-hating ramblings, Obama met while carrying out his own radical social activism as community organizer at ACORN, (radical organization)
Penny Pritzker, heads Obama camp National Finance Committee was president of Superior Bank - massively failed and she literally bought her way out of jail paying $460 MILLION fine; was the very epicenter of subprime loan scandal” that would come to eat this nation’s financial system alive.
Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson, former head of Obama’s vice presidential selection committee, discovered he benefited from sweetheart loans from subprime king Countrywide.
Tony Rezko certainly and his federal indictments and financial dealing with Obamas of course and William Ayers, US terrorist bomber, Obama-co-lecturer, fellow board member, neighbor, and friend.
Communist Frank Marshall Davis, obama mentor; Saul Alinsky and Gerald Kellman (Kellman’s Woods Fund is how Obama hooked up with terrorist William Ayers)
Chicago lawyer Mazen Asbahi, appointed as Obama camp national coord for Muslim n affairs also stepped down after news about his stint on the fund’s board - which includes fundamentalist imam - prompting The Wall Street Journal inquiries about relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood and his long personal relationship with Hamas Jamal Said.
Obama desperately needs voters to forget hes the son of a Muslim father who served an incredibly brutal and corrupt Kenyan government; to forget he attended a madrassa in Indonesia and practiced Islam; forget that he campaigned in Kenya on behalf of Raila Odinga, who relied upon chaos, corruption, and violence in his campaign; numerous associations with radical Muslims; forget the photographs of Obama in traditional Muslim clothes, hanging with Muslim radicals such as Mazen Asbahi and anti-Semite Rashid Khalidi.
The mainstream media has frankly put the security of our great country at risk with an Obama coronation media like CNN & MSNBC is the only way Obama managed to steal the Dem nom. It’s extremely concerning that so many Americans could care less about who their candidate really is?? simply amazing and frankly scarey.

John McCain and the Republicans have to go with the only thing they have, their same old, tired, fear and smear. It didn't work in 2006. It didn't work in the three special Congressional elections held since then. All of these elections were won by Democrats.
Barack Obama has a plan to get us out Iraq. Barack Obama has a plan that provides incentives for American automobile companies to build fuel effecient cars that puts Americans to work and helps ween us off the tyranny of oil.
Barack Obama has the policies and the temperament to lead America. The other candidate doesn't.

Funny how McBush finds lies and smear as a sense of humor.
ps...gareette...just on the other thread you say Obama lost your vote. What? As if he ever had it? Who the heck you fooling......read your rant and tell me you just changed your mind. BS.

gareette,
The only political chumps I know of are the ones who voted for Bush in 2004. These sheep had seen what Shrub was all about for four years and still voted for the knucklehead. See what that got us?
You write you want to know what qualifies Obama to be president? Now we both know you don't really care what anyone says, your mind was made up a long time ago. But for the benefit of those who might stumble onto our beloved Swamp this morning here goes:
Barack Obama was against the Iraq War of choice from the git-go. That's what qualifies as good judgement. Barack Obama worked with Republican U.S. Senator Richard Lugar on legislation funding anti-WMD and other weapon proliferation. That goes to the quality of being able to work with serious Republicans to get serious business done. Barack Obama proposed a year and a half ago that American auto makers be given incentives to build fuel effecient cars that would make those companies more competitive and put more Americans to work. This was long before the spike in the price of crude oil. That qualifies as forward thinking, smart economic policy.
Those are three items that bring a plurality of Americans to believe that Barack Obama is the best QUALIFIED candidate to be president.
Even if you don't care.

Sense of humor is right. The Democrats want John McCain to do their work for them in denouncing any book, article, commentary or nighttime TV comedian who says ANYTHING about Obama. Now, that is a laugh.
The one thing it does reveal is that media other than the three networks and the print press are looking into Obama's views and background. If the so-called major media did their jobs, ala John Edwards, instead of being a part of the Obama campaign staff, there wouldn't be such a fertile field to plow.

Hey Gareette.... do us all a favor and stop with the double standards.... ask that very same question of McCain as well. Do we want a 72 yr old president who quite possibly might not make it though his term? As most people retire because their brains and bodies are old and becoming debilitated, do we want to elect someone at that age, during a time of war and economic unrest? Not me! And those are not the only reasons he's not fit... But I'm short on time here and can't list them all for you. It's quite obvious that whoever the Dem nominee is that you'd be on here citing this and that about how they're not fit.... the truth is... we've had an unfit president in office for 8 years and it's all because of you and people like yourself. So really.... I think your comments are falling on deaf ears.

Doug Zook,
I won't address the silliness of "fear and smear" labels, but I will point out that Obama has consistantly out spent McCain campaigning -- by an enormous margin -- and he still can't pull ahead. However you may choose to label it, the Republicans are doing somehting right.
As for Obama's "plan" to get out of Iraq, Would you please share that with us? Because nobody (not even Obama) has been able to spell that out.
Regarding Obama's "plan" to ween us off of oil, it's just as vague as his Iraq "plan", except for his being wedded to corn based ethanol.
Did you know that corn based ethanol has driven up global fuel prices by as much as 75% (according to a study by The World Bank)? That iit is the cause of mass starvation and food riots?
Did you know that corn based ethanol dumps tons of greehouse gases into the air and pollutes groundwater? That it is actually excacerbating the Global warming problem?
Did you know hat corn based ethanol is grossly inefficient? That by some estimates there is even a net loss of energy when it's produced? That it's production requires huge amounts of petroleum so it doesn't ween us off of oil at all?
Bet you didn't.

The discredited media dares to label someone's book "discredited?"
Not having read it, I don't know whether the Corsi book is credible or not. What I do know is that the same Swamp reporters who have not themselves read the book, and who have been unpaid publicists for Obama and other Democrats for the past year, are in no position to comment on this (or any other) book's credibility.

It is the nation that must try and maintain a sense of humor, in light of the Republican candidate's overwhelming lack of leadership abilities. It is difficult, when our men and women, in uniform, are dying and being maimed and disabled in the Oil Fields of Iraq, due in a very large part, to the inadequacies of the two previous, Republican administrations. It is unimaginable that Republicans would try to foist a third administration on our nation, that in place of statesmanship, they try to cover up their shortcomings with a " sense of humor " !! I hope by a " sense of humor ", they are not trying to pass off, Senator McCain's little ditty of, " Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran. ", because in no way, should that pass for humor . Then again, we already know that one man's sense of humor is another man's nightmare, the past two, Republican administrations will verify that observation. The nation wishes to awaken from this Republican nightmare and enjoy a new day, with a new President, President Obama !! He will not find it funny, bombing people, anywhere!! If anything, he will make a quick and dignified exit from the Oil Fields of Iraq, not like what we saw, in Vietnam, under another inadequate Republican administration !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Obama's the one who gave Corsi a 40-page rebuttal. If the book is such a lie why would Obama waste so much time and energy sanctioning and rebutting it?

Posted by: bill r. | August 17, 2008 10:10 AM
MJ,
I agree.
It is remarkable that John McCain has been in Washington for over 25 years, with a Rolodex of equal age. Has name ID second to none. Married a millionaire beer heiress with houses, condos, and jets. Yet John McCain can't compete with the junior senator from Illinois that most American sounding name, Barack Obama.
Why do suppose that is MJ?
Could it be that the people who know John McCain best don't believe enough in him to part with a buck?
Posted by: Doug Zook | August 17, 2008 10:17 AM
Doug Zook,
You conveniently ignored my point and tell me that Obama is raking in more corporate dollars, is if that somehow proves his worth. The fact remains that after campaigning for the presidency for 4 years (and outspending McCain by a huge margin) Obama is making no headway.
You also ignored my questions: What are Obama's "plans" for the war and energy, anyway? Obama himself can't tell us -- there's nothing specific on his website -- but you seem to know. Please share.
Posted by: MJ | August 17, 2008 10:47 AM
John McCain often doesn't answer the question being asked because he doesn't really listen to the question. He sees everything as black and white and isn't able to look at more than his side. We have had 8 years of a President who doesn't think, we don't need anymore.
Posted by: John A | August 17, 2008 10:59 AM
MJ,
John McCain has been running for president for what, 9-10 years now?
After Karl Rove trashed his reputation in 2000, McCain never quit running for president. That's why he literally and figuratively hugged Shrub instead of shoving Rove's teeth down his throat.
With all that name ID and time in Washington, why don't people believe in McCain enough to donate to his campaign?
P.S. If you run into gareette's mom, could you ask her if he can come out and play?

Read the Case Against Barack Obama by David Freddoso, a reporter for National Review Online. It has done the investigative reporting that the driveby media won't do.
This book is #1 on Amazon.com and #5 on NY Times.
It is an indepth look at Obama
his mentor Emil Jones, Jeremiah Wright, Father Pfleger, who received a $225,000 grant for his ministeries when Obama was a State Senator,he tells about Obamas mentor Alice Palmer, Saul Alinsky,William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn,Obamas special relationship to Mayor Daley,Obamas beliefs on abortion with government funding, infanticide and partial birth abortion and how practicing Catholics could be excommunicated for voting for Obama. The book deals directly with Obamas 17 year relationship with Tony Rezko, his community organizing. This book is a must read for you diehards like Zook and Fitzgerald by the way,Doug you have dropped Hussein from your name.

"57 state" Obama's response has already been discredited.
For example, while trying to refute Corsi, they refer to Bob Beckel as a "Republican" strategist.
Twice.
"Republican Strategist Bob Beckel Said That He’s Convinced Michelle Obama Meant That She Had Seen People Unify Around The Basic Issues And It Made Her Proud. Republican Strategist Bob Beckel said about Michelle Obama’s comment, ..."
As even Swamp reporters know, Bob Beckel is a longtime Democrat.

Bones: "Do we want a 72 yr old president who quite possibly might not make it though his term?"
It looks to me like the Karl Rove types would be happy with this. They can ramrod the convention to put another Darth in as VP. Then, the possibility of the POTUS not lasting through his first term would fill them with glee.

Danny Bloom-aside from the silly personal attacks at the Pastor. I thought that odd about Obama saying he cheated and checked into that subject prior.... but I think he meant that in thinking it would come up, he checked into it ahead of time. There's no way Obama could have known the questions prior, he tries to be polished on his answers and this night was NOT AT ALL POLISHED for him ha. It was a bad night of hemming and hawing and doing everything he could not to answer the HOT TOPICS that were broached. He would have had smoother responses, even if he was going to give non-answers, had he known prior. Trust me ha!
The LEFT are trying to knock down this book, while I think many of them realize what's being said is true, a good lot of them just cannot believe it. They won't check into these facts as so many of us have prior to the book coming out, and Obama really does have a background and beliefs that he IS HIDING FROM HIS SHEEP.

McCain is lying, pure and simple. Sense of Humor? Riiggghht. This from a guy with a famously short fuse?
This is republican smear tactics, no more no less. McCain's similarities to Bush multiply as he surrounds himself with Bush acolytes.

Jerry "Be careful I know Karl Rove" White,
The only "die hards" I know are the 26% dead enders who think Dubya has been a good president.
But let's back to Karl Rove for a minute. Why does John McCain take money from the man (Karl Rove) McCain believes smeared his family? Would a Knight of Columbus do that?
Posted by: Doug Zook | August 17, 2008 9:32 PM
Gosh, how dare that McCain not defend the Swamp's favorite candidate at every chance he gets! How dare that McCain not heap praise upon the Obamessiah in a manner not unlike Chris Matthews or Frank James at all times?
Wake up people, it's a campaign. McCain's trying to get himself elected and he's under no obligation to make things nice for Obama like the media seems to think is their responsibility.

John McCain sure had a sense of humor about Vicki Isemann. I remeber how he just laughed that off and refused to denounce the NYT and other papers that ran that story. No anger, no rebuttal just a good hearty laugh at that slander. He didn't waste anytime rebutting it. Nope, complete silence from him.
That is what happened, isn't it?

McCain doesn't have any integrity to be damned. He surrendered that along time ago. He will dio whatever it takes to be President. He will change any position, support any smear, and ally with the sleaziest and most loathesome creatures (Goodyear, Loeffler, Davis, Schueneman) who will sell out their loyalty to this nation and it's principles, what ever it takes to ensure his election. He has no honor left.

Hussein you're a joke. No candidate has been more "smeared" and lied about in this election more than McCain. The NY Times and every other Obama shill group has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at him and he's been tough enough to take it. The empty suit from Hawaii has no such thick skin and it's showing.
Posted by: Jeff | August 18, 2008 1:06 PM
Jeff, McCain cried like a liuttle baby when the NYT ran the Isemann arcticle. He was apopletic when General Clark even implied that his military recird did not mean that he would a great President. He's whined over each and every criticism of him. He is the thinnest skinnned of candidates. Tough? Not hardly. Entitled, spoiled and hypocrtical is more like it.
Posted by: MBT | August 18, 2008 1:37 PM
If you think that Obama's plans are vague, maybe you should stop being so lazy and take a look at them. Head over to his website, where everything is laid out in detail for you. Of course he isn't going to go into the intricate details of foreign policy or how to boost the economy when he is giving a speech to a group of Americans. He is a politician, and he understands how to reach people. He has a message of hope that people can relate to, and the policies to back it up.
Maybe we should all take the time to see what the candidates really think instead of engaging in these mindless personality-based attacks.
