Obama seeks full Florida, Michigan count: The Swamp
The Swamp

This question of Florida and Michigan was long contentious. No longer.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Now that Sen. Barack Obama is assured of his party's nomination for president, he is calling on the Democratic National Committee to count the full votes of the disputed delegations from Florida and Michigan, which had been contested during the primaries.

"In just a few weeks, our party will convene in Denver for our National Convention,'' Obama wrote to his party's credentials committee today. "This will be an historic event that will showcase our vision for changing the direction of our country.

"The delegates and alternates who gather on Monday, August 25 will reflect the talent, energy and rich diversity of our Democratic Party. The delegates will come from all 56 states and territories. As these delegates go about the important business of the Convention, I believe Party unity calls for the delegates from Florida and Michigan to be able to participate fully alongside the delegates from the other states and territories. Accordingly, I ask that the Credentials Committee, when it meets on August 24 to approve the delegates for the National Convention, pass a resolution that would entitle each delegate from Florida and Michigan to cast a full vote.''

The party originally had stripped the two states of their delegates for holding primary elections before Feb. 5, in violation of party rules.Obama's erstwhile rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, had sought a full count of all the Florida and Michigan delegates - despite the fact that Obama's name had not appeared on the Michigan ballot and the two had not contested Florida's vote.

In a compromise move by the committee in May, the party decided to allot each Florida and Michigan delegate a half-vote. Obama's move now virtually guarantees a full count. The three co-chairs of the partyis credentials committee issued a statement today calling the Florida and Michigan question a "top priority... As always our goal is to ensure a fair process and a unified Democratic Party so that we can win in November," wrote Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt Jr. and Eliseo Roques-Arroyo.

Obama wrote to the three:

"As a candidate for the nomination, I supported the DNC's efforts to establish and enforce a schedule for primaries and caucuses that would broaden the opportunity for Democrats from all regions of the country and all backgrounds and walks of life to have a meaningful voice. An unprecedented number of voters participated in our Democratic nominating process. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Governor Dean for his principled leadership during this long and challenging process.

"As we prepare to come together in Denver, however, we must be - and will be - united in our determination to change the course of our nation. To that end, Democrats in Florida and Michigan must know that they are full partners and colleagues in our historic mission to reshape Washington and lead our country in a new direction.''

oh! how convienant now!

Just amazing...as Brit Hume said once: "Obama started the year by selling hope, but now he’s selling audacity"

www.obamasgaffes.blogspot.com

Obama is the polititian who, for his benefit, will call a same women his mother one day, wife the other day, mistress the next day and daughter the day after...he is just an empty suit

FLIP FLOP - when it is convenient, count the votes, when it is not, don't. How can we trust this man?

With his number of states down to 56, which one did the country loose? And he wants to be president? Gimme a break !

What a piece of work this guy is. Hillary supporters will NEVER vote for the wannabe. Bye Barry - you're too slick by half - just an indecent mockery of what could have been. Then again, rules only apply to women, not to the Chosen One. Oh, and thanks Obama supporters for force feeding this complete phony down the party's throat. Congratulations, President McCain.

and you idiots still want to vote for obama? didn't you learn from blagojobitch, daley, stroger, jones and madigan? are you so dense? people who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it.

He never decided not to count the votes, the DNC did. Even if they had counted the votes in full he still wins so it doesn't matter. He is trying to bring the party together, whats wrong with that?

McCain supporters always attack Obama instead of addressing their own candidate's obvious flaws. This country deserves McCain.

This guy is a Democratic Party version of Bush...say whatever gets you through the next day and then move on...

This is all pretty much expected and not unusual. Clinton won't even put her name up for nomination, so the votes don't matter for that purpose, anyway. In the meantime, this allows Florida and Michigan delegates to vote fully on all other matters, such as the party platform.

Should make for quite a convention.
This might be enough to stir Hillary and her blind followers.
By the way, where have they been these last few weeks?

Frieda is so right. How cheated and insulted women must feel, Hillary Clinton must feel!

Clinton stuck to the DNC rules, and had it turned back on her by Obama....he called her a monster, trying to disenfranchise Michigan and Florida delegates, when all she was doing was going by the rules Obama originally agreed to.

Once he assassinated her character, and forced her out, he makes a big deal over allowing them to finally be seated. Just another big public show to humiliate Clinton more, while re-writing history again.

The initial issue was that MI and FLA knew they would be stripped of delegates yet still held the primary ... and then cried foul when the DNC did what they said they would do ... except they actually gave them a break and allowed a half vote. Now the issue is counting them in for the convention - a completely different scenario. The first for breaking the rules, the second to have a voice in the final nomination. The three previous comments are obviously just sour grapes from Hilary backers. Get it together and support your candidate ... even if you go over to McBush - but at least stop whining!

Seriously.. is there anything this guys won't "Change" his mind on?

This is way over the top:

He could have done this months ago without any risk to his nomination. Why even bother now? I think this will be the first time in the history of modern presidential campaigns where a candidate's total lack of morality will cost him the election.

So Hillary gets her full delegate count, plus the four he stole and is in contest at the convention? No? I didn't think so! Even throwing Wexler under that already crowded undercarriage will not unify the party.

Things are getting quite ridiculous and Obama is doing himself nothing but harm by these types of flip-flops. His supporters at the caucus in late May now look like fools; Clinton and her supporters must be steaming. The "blindness" to this, which may in fact be based on an arrogance that is in turn founded upon a belief that Obama cannot use, may well be his undoing. You certainly do not have it "in the bag," Barack if you care to look at the latest polls. Speeches are not enough and you have already lost many in your core group.

What a piece of work this guy is. Hillary supporters will NEVER vote for the wannabe.
Posted by: Bemused | August 3, 2008 4:20 PM

and we will never forget it.

Exactly so. He could have done it all quietly, but instead Obama and his campaign made it a big press release deal. Why? They are still afraid because Clinton hasn't released all her delegates, and they need to drive more nails in her coffin out of fear the Super Delegates will realize Obama has a good chance of losing in November.....

What's next? Will the appoint Geraldine Ferraro a campaign co-chair? ROFL!

The Savior Obama will forgive them their sins and they should all go forth forgiven and be restored and praise the him. This guy is some piece of work.

Maybe Obama can do for the nation what Granholm has done for Michigan........wouldn't that be wonderful?

If McCain picks Romney as his VP Obama loses Michigan in November.

End of story.

Obama and the Senate Armed Services Committee met recently to discuss EMP weapons.

He had a chance to be the big man when it was still a contest, but he opposed those states because they had gone for Hillary. Now when he thinks he's safe, he says it's okay to count them. Hillary supporters already had more than enough reasons to oppose Obama. Now they have two more.

I realize the name i would consider appropriately calling Obama wont be printed, so i wont risk it. McCain is out of the question for me, but the thought of voting for Obama makes me want to vomit. This is a disgusting state of affairs. I was so looking forward to this election to get our country back on the right track but to have this lying creep in charge does nothing positive for us. I dont trust him. In fact i actually fear what he can/will do TO us all. Yet, by not voting we end up with a continuation of all that has been bad for us for at least the past 8 yrs. A horrid state of affairs.

Won't this put Clinton ahead in the elected delegate count? So the supers will now over-rule the will of the voters?

Watch for the big switch in Denver: Clinton for President and Obama as celebrity VP. With all his changes, he really has few differences with Clinton now. the change in nominees will throw off the Republicans.

Don't you think the reason Obama has changed his stand on Michigan and Florida delegates is an attempt to insure that the party members from those states support him in the fall? He's not doing this just to be nice!

I wonder why American people love the word "Flip-Flop". What you call flip-flop is called common sense. But you can't blame Senator Obama for everything in the world. As the Berebere of Algeria say, "To criticize for criticizing other people is a proof of idlenees."
Guy Blaise

So when it counts, they should not be counted, now that it does not, let us count them by all means. He is changing positions daily in issues when it suits him. Drilling was yesterdays flipfop, Michigan todays, let's see what change of heart tomorrrow will bring depending on the winds. Obama seems to have mastered the old school politics he condemns to perfection already.

"FLIP FLOP - when it is convenient, count the votes, when it is not, don't. How can we trust this man?"

Actually its a FLIP. While I realize flip flop is fun to say and all, that would mean that he had changed his thoughts, and then returned to his original position (i.e. a 360).

Hillary suspended her campaign. She never conceded. Obama and the DNC are now a laughing stock in Politics. Who will trust or respect them now.
Hillary really won the primaries and now Florida and Michigan will clinch it. Hillary's 18m supporters are alive and well and you will hear from all of us.
Obama you are on your way out-you blew it big time. No one will trust you or the DNC after this ever again.

Oh, Oh! The comments here have been reported to the Obama Rapid Response group at the Obama website! Watch out, here come the apologists and the attack dogs, ready to drink more Kool-Aid for The Chosen One!

The are absolute fanatics at digging down, shouting down, all negative comments about The One. They even send emails to reporters bosses, demanding those ingrates be fired, lol.

The District of Columbia
Puerto Rico
The U.S. Virgin Islands
Guam
American Samoa
Americans Abroad

The above entities send delegates to the Democratic convention, along with the 50 states. That is what the senator is referring to when he says 56. It is not that he does not know the number of states in our union. Who really thinks that a Harvard Law School graduate and an instructor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago law school is unaware of the number of states in the union is unabashedly and irrationally anti-Obama...or is hampered in some other way.

On the issue of the Florida and Michigan delegates, it is the smart thing to do at this point. It would have been pretty dumb to allow them a full vote when Senator Clinton was still in contention because she ran unapposed in Michigan, and Senator Obama never campaigned in Florida (while Senator Clinton made appearances and was already well known there). He was, after all, in the race to win it...which he did by employing an innovative strategy which caught the opposition by surprise.

I hope that McCain does win--because all these folks that are getting a kick out a attacking and criticizing Obama will shut their mouths. As the economy gets worse, bankruptcies and foreclosures soar--they won't have a word to say. They did not criticize Reagan, Bush 1 or 2 when the economy soured under them-and they won't with McCain either. So, let's just continue the status quo--weak economy, a never ending war.

The DNC rules for Florida and Michigan were that each state could get no more than half of their delegates reinstated - which they did. Now Obama and the DNC are on the brink of breaking the DNC's rules. This is totally ridiculous, a MAJOR flip-flop for Obama, and a clear picture of his character and judgment. When Hillary was trying to get the 100 percent enacted during the primaries, Obama was against that knowing that Hillary would win those two states. All of Obama's supporters stood behind him saying that the rules are the rules, those states broke the rules and should pay the price. Are there any Obama supporters out there who will convince Obama NOT to break the rules?

how dumb do some people have to be to think this is a "flip-flop" or somehow controversial? more than just the nominee is selected at the convention - the sates' delegates vote on a host of issues, and obama wants to give michigan and florida their full say in voting on these other issues in order to bring the party together. those states were punished by not having their national primary votes count - as they knew would happen - but obama is essentially saying "they've been punished enough." this has nothing to do with hillary or unfairness or flip-flopping. the hair-trigger mentality on display here to immediately chastise obama for anything and everything is so puzzling - do people read or think anymore, or just look for reasons to be outraged?

Ridge, "The One"? Honestly, way to tip your hand! That's code the McCane campaign is using to communicate to fundamentalist Evangelicals that Obama is the antichrist. But remember, those are the same people Karl Rove refers to as "the crazies". At least Obama is a real Christian who cares about human beings with souls, rather than corporations which are only "people" in the fictional legal sense. We'll see which position God agrees with on judgement day. On that day, I would not want to have been a Republican in this era, I'll tell you that much.

There is no surprise here. In his first venture into public office in 1996, Obama had all of his opponants removed from the ballot on technicalities. Then in his campaign for US Senate his "supporters" (aka drones) insigated releasing damaging devorce documents about his main rival Jack Ryan. Despite the fact a judge had origionally sealed the records for protection of the Ryan's young son.
The only potential "change" I see Obama bringing to American politics is a new low.

Anything to keep from talking about the real issues that matter to us, Silva.

Please ... McCain is going to do the same thing with the Republican delegates. Lest we suffer from selective history: Republicans halved the delegates from both states. It didn't matter who was the nominee was, when the convention came around - everybody was going to have a seat at the table.
None of this petty bickering gets us anywhere. Why can't issues actually be debated?

Love to hear Hillary's response to this. Used to be I just didn't like Obama. Now I hate this sleazeball.

Somehow people forget the Clinton and Obama agreed to the DNC rules when Clinton Kept her name on the Ballot in both FL and MI, She campaigned in one of the states and Obama took his name off one of the balllots.

So for all intents and purposes when Clinton was calling for a full reinstatement of those votes she was going back on her word and placing the DNC and any other person who complied with their rules in a bad light.

Now however She is not in the running, so Obama can afford to and needs to allow these states to have full votes.

I know what I'm learning here, break all the rules as a way to attract attention to yourself. The upside is that if McCain wins and Roe VS Wade gets abolished, the anti Obama voices will have to fall on their swords.

So the real Obama finally showed up: the opportunistic, weasel. Why anybody can trust this guy is beyond me. Bring back Hillary and let's have a real contest between Hillary and McCain.

"56 States and Territories"?!. Um, Barry, we have 50 States, not 57, and we have 5 Territories, to wit: American Samoa, Guam, the Marianas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Yeah, this guy would be great.

The difference, Thomas, is McCain ACTUALLY CLINCHED his nomination. He won the required number of votes from actual primary elections and not from superdelegates, like Obama did. What Obamabots don't like to admit is that he has won absolutely nothing yet. Without the supers he has no nomination. The fact that he's flip flopped from "we have to respect the rules" to "seat Michigan and Florida" just goes to show how cynical and undemocratic the democratic primaries have been. We will never know who the nominee of the people truly is for the democratic party, but one thing we do know is what Harold Ickes was rightly indignant about, the rules committee illegally took four delegates and gave them to Obama based on no election or no vote. That should disgust everyone.

Seems the sleaze ball Obama Groups brigade has arrived...alternately pleading, then attacking everyone who doesn't drink their Kool-Aid.

It was "The Chosen One's" own free will to remove himself from the ballot. And for the sleazy spinner above, it was Obama who declared himself and his supporters to be the Chosen One(s), not someone in some nutter right wing hate group.

The Obama people need to accept that not all Democrats are willing to accept his lack of scruples in exchange for getting a Democrat elected. I have yet to see McCain treat his opponets, Huckabee or even Romney, the way Obama and his bots treated Hillary Clinton, or even her husband. They too were branded as racists, same brush they have tried using on McCain. Obama is asking way too much, too arrogantly, to expect us to forget the past, and somehow believe he isn't just basically the opportunist his constant position-switching shows him to be.

The Obama-bots have so mistreated many initial Obama supporters, they have only to look into the mirror to see what is driving many Democrats to not vote, or support McCain.

This guy is such a phony. He'll win in November, taxes will increase dramatically, but the Change Brigade will be happy. A liar with no executive experience will be running the show. Congrats America.

... the sates' delegates vote on a host of issues, and obama wants to give michigan and florida their full say in voting on these other issues in order to bring the party together.

chad - What are some of the host of issues the delegates will be voting on at the convention?

Which is the better word for Obama, America's Living God- TWO FACE or FLIP FLOP

SORRY OBAMA IT IS TOO LATE.... YOU DID SO LITTLE AND NOW IT IT TOO LATE......
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT YOU DO OR SAY
YOU WILL NEVER HAVE MY VOTE
YOU CANNOT BUY ME
YOU CANNOT BRIBE ME
YOU CANNOT WOE ME
I OWN MY VOTE
YOU CHEATED FLORIDA
YOU CHEATED MICHIGAN
YOU SHOULD HAVE NO DELEGATES FROM THOSE STATES
YOU RAN ADS AND SUED TO REMOVE YOUR NAME
YOU HAVE NO HONOR
YOU HAVE NO LEADERSHIP
YOU ARE CORRUPT
I WILL NOT SUPPORT A FRIEND TO TERROR
I AM VOTING FOR JOHN MCCAIN
UNLESS HILLARY CLINTON WINS THE CONVENTION

Something this Republican paper and nearly all other media continue to ignore. The Republicans also punished Michigan and Florida for holding their primaries too early against the rules. They cut them and 3 others, including New Hampshire of all things! in half! So it's not a DNC-only enforcement of rules. The state govts. are the source of this problem. I don't know anybody who wanted to vote in December, which is what would have happened if the RNC and DNC hadn't enforced the rules, stopping the ludicrous rush to the front of the line.

No surprise the Republican hate machine is working overtime nationally and in this comment column. To get to know the real Barack, read "Audacity of Hope". The guy is very even-handed and intelligent. Two qualities the Republicans have shown again and again that they despise.

People say "they know John McCain". How in the heck can they?? He doesn't know himself. One day he says something, then his handlers - same ilk that have ruined the country the last 7 1/2 years - tell him, "John, you can't say that." The next day he comes back and not only does a 180, but has the gall to deny he ever uttered the words he said on videotape.

remember, this is a Chicago democrat - so count them only once. Speaking of bad counts - lets not have repeats of St. Louis in 2000 Milwaukee in 2004 and Seattle in 2006.

James to answer your question. We have been backing McCain. Maybe Hillary should put her name back into the nomination. Remember the unpledged are not legally held to whomever they pledged for, they can change their vote. And besides Hillary still has the pledged deligates that she honestly won in the primaries. The could turn out to be even more interesting than I ever expected.

Semenowl2006. Where have you been? Obam blocked every attempt by Hillary to come to an amicable solution to count FL and MI fully. Now that it could be to his advantage he is flipflopping "again." Oh by the way I didn't misspell you name.

Joseph Harmon, I hope MI and FL aren't that stupid. They were desinfranchised by Obam once, they should not be dumb enough to let him do it again. MI and FL are red states, I hope they go red in the GE.

Chad Brosky, FLIP FLOP!
thomas, NO they didn't.

Emmanual, they have been trying to reverse Roe vs Wade for years. It will not happen. By the way vs is never capitalized.

November can't come soon enough to rid ourselves of this pathetic con man Obama.

Lord, have mercy on this country---that Obama can flip flop more than any candidate I have seen in the last 40 years!!! That is change all right, but not the kind this country needs!

Where is Larry Flynt when we really need him???? Larry!!!!!

all the negative obama comments show what kind of knee-jerk, illogical criticism he gets. although there are some legitimate things obama has done to gripe about, this is not one of them. not even close. you better be careful, obama-bashers. you're starting to cry wolf over everything. your credibility is diminishing at an alarming rate. i'd save the outrage for legitimate concerns if you want to be taken seriously.

You are 100 % right, I totally agree with you!

Connect the dots. He is afraid of losing voters on those states. Their voters only count as half for the primary, to get him the nomination, but they count as a full one, if it gets him the general election.

This is not a new kind of politician - he is a Chicago Democratic Politician - shake his hand and check for your ring and your watch.

http://brokengovernment.wordpress.com

This is disappointing. As a Hillary supporter turned Obama supporter, I'm back on the Hillary bandwagon.

Obama should have thought about the consequences of his decision before subjecting Florida and Michigan to less votes.

The media reports on Independs, Republicans and Democrats but what about the Democrats that don't know whether to vote or NOT? Obama is evoked a new trend in registered voters: Those who may not vote.

Convenience We Can Believe In!

We are the ones we've been waiting for! We are the chosen ones! We will take a firm stand, unless we change our mind, which is ok cause we are the ones we have been waiting for!

He wants to unite the whole Democraic Party under him, that seems to be the thing to do if they want to beat the GOP.

The big question is: What does Brit Hume think?

Most Dems refuse to call Obama a Flip Flopper, but I bet a few past Hill supporters are on board now! To do that, after saying that no one should get them, is a sign of a serious lack of confidence that this race with McCain will be an easy one. It's telling!

Obama is a rotten politician just like Johnnie Boy McCain. They are all self serving opportunistic parasites. We are all doomed to have another four plus years of strife in America no matter who wins the oval office.

Posted by: Tom | August 3, 2008 8:51 PM

Since you obviously can't read, we will try this again. "District of Columbia" is also one of those "territories". It is NOT a state. So 56 is correct. When Obama said "57" the first time, that was obviously just a mis-speak, and hardly worth the toilet paper journalism of conservatives who know they have lost on EVERY LEGITIMATE ISSUE.

Remember the old story about the tortoise and the hare? It might do one well to reread it.

This is not over. I have said this since the beginning - with Obama there is no "There" there.

Odd that whenever The Post shows something Obama says to be a lie, his Obamabots trot out that tired smear about The Post being a "Republican" paper.

Today Obama smeared McCain saying he was in the oil companies pockets, offering as "proof" that McCain got two million from oil companies. Except that corporations cannot give money to candidates. People who work for corporations can, and they have given $345,000 to Obama as well, And the accurate figure going to McCain was 1.1 million, not two.
>br>
Just more examples of Obama's complete disregard for the truth.

Is Obama saying individual employees shouldn't be allowed to donate to candidates? What about the $500,000+ Obama got from employees of just one Wall Street company? Does that mean he's in Wall Street's pocket?

THE PUMAS ARE TOTALLY JUSTIFIED ...

1. Contrary to what Obamabots say ...
Obama and Hillary were in a dead heat,
when the DNC pressured Hillary into not
only conceding, but campaigning for Obama.
2. Obama is once again in a dead heat, but now
with McCain, even though Obamabots act like
Obama has already won (like they did in the
primaries against Hillary). So, this means that
half of the Democrats, and all the Republicans
(3/4 of America) dIdn't want Obama. Plus, he
didn't even win the popular vote, and refused a
revote in Michigan and Florida.
3. Obama has the thinnest resume in politics, and
he won state legislature and Senator by
disqualifications of his opponents, not by earned
experience, or votes.
4. Obama's one claim to fame is being a community
organizer, where he boasts of registering voters.
Then he took their votes away from them, by
disqualifying his opponents on technicalities, prior
to the election.
5. Obama's mentor of 20 years, was an anti-American
racist ... not to mention other unsavory associations.
6. Obama is simply buying the election, since he's
good at fund raising ... hardly a qualification to be
President of the United States.
7. The media never vetted Obama, and they are
giving him a free ride, plus more than twice the
print and air time as McCain, as they did against
Hillary.
8. 90% of blacks are voting for Obama, because he is
black, while the campaign gained ground by
accusing most opponents of racism.
9. Obamabots were, and are extremely nasty and sarcastic
towards Hillary supporters, as well as McCain supporters.
10. Pumas should be applauded for putting country before party ...
especially a party that did not represent them, and a party
which highjacked the nomination for Obama.

Remember the old story about the tortoise and the hare? It might do one well to reread it.

This is not over. I have said this since the beginning - with Obama there is no "There" there.

How much "there" is there with McCain. Please identify two -- just two -- of his notable accomplishments during his many years in the Senate. WIthout a record of his own to run on, it doesn't do McSame much good to cry that Obama has no record to run on.

A Blinkin, here are a few McCain accomplishments.....

He is a Ranking Member of the Armed Services Committee.

Member of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs.

Showed an ability to negotiate with people who disagree with him by joining Senator Feingold to pass Campaign Finance Reform despite fellow republicans claiming the bill was not conservative enough. He showed he could put his country before his party allegiances. This is something Barack Obama has never done.

He spearheaded the line-item veto bill.

Chairman of the powerful Senate Commerce Committee

He stood up against Rumsfeld’s Iraq strategy despite resistance from his party. The change in strategy that resulted is credited for major progress made in the war.

Worked with many democrats to stop the disastrous Harriet Miers nomination by George Bush. His actions led to the appointment of Roberts and Alito. They are two of the strongest constitutionalists on the court.

Spearheaded legislation to stop torture of prisoners of war

Spearheaded legislation against Bush and the rest of his party including HMO reform, climate change, and gun legislation

Spearheaded an effort to reduce spending.

Spearheaded effort to stop earmarks. He has been nicknamed the sheriff for the amount of earmarks that he has stopped.

He has voted with his party only 63% of the time showing he is willing to put the country ahead of political parties.

Thanks Ridge. In other words, McCain has no legislative accomplishments to speak of during his twenty-some year tenuref, other than McCain-Feingold. Line item veto was unconstitutional, and it was Dole's bill anyway.

---

As for supposedly opposing Rumsfeld on Iraq, where was McCain when Bush wanted to start a war with no budgetary planning, inadequate body armor and other supplies to the troops, and no exit strategy? Answer: cheerleading and Rumsfeld.
