Raymond Hunter Geisel was packing weapons and military gear in his hotel room and car in Miami, and, according to a classmate in a training class for bail bondsmen, he had made a threat about Sen. Barack Obama - "If he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself.''
The Secret Service arrested Geisel on Saturday on charges of threatening to assassinate the Democratic presidential candidate. Thursday, he was ordered held at Miami's downtown detention center without bail by a federal magistrate.
Obama had been in Florida on last Friday and Saturday, but did not visit South Florida.
Geisel also was quoted as saying that "he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head," according to the Secret Service.
Geisel denied in a written statement to a Secret Service agent that he ever made those threats, and court documents don't indicate that he took any steps to carry out any assassination.
A search of Geisel's 1998 Ford Explorer and hotel room in Miami uncovered a loaded 9mm handgun, knives, dozens of rounds of ammunition including armor-piercing types, body armor, military-style fatigues and a machete. The SUV, which has Maine license plates, was wired with flashing red and yellow emergency lights.
Geisel told the Secret Service he was originally from Bangor, Maine, and had been living recently in a houseboat in the Florida Keys town of Marathon, according to court documents. He said he used the handgun for training for the bail bondsman class, had the knives for protection and used the machete to cut brush in Maine.
Authorities in Maine said Geisel pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal threatening after a 2007 incident and spent 48 hours in a Bangor jail. Police in Hampden, a town just outside of Bangor, received a complaint from Geisel's brother on Oct. 18, 2007, that Geisel had threatened him with a knife, Hampden police Sgt. Dan Stewart said. Geisel was charged with criminal threatening and terrorizing; the second charge was later dropped.

This why I have the ut-most respect for those who would run for public office. Particularly at it's highest level. You never know what nuts are out there. Whether there is a real political objective or just some loner looking to become famous like Hinkley or Chapman (and yes I know that's John Lennon's killer, but the point is the same), the threat is always real. Kudos to the classmate that turned this guy in and the secret service for doing their jobs.
Even if he was "joking a round", it is a felony to threaten a public official. So, at the very least, this guy is a complete moron.

Seems more like a "tough guy" with a big mouth than an assassin.

This is why our leaders have to be protected at all times. There are nuts out there that will kill them. This nut seemed to hate all elected leaders regardless of political party. He wanted to kill both President Bush and Senator Obama.

I wasn't aware that armor-piercing bullets and machetes are standard issue for bail bondsmen.

There are IDIOTS everywhere you look.

This is why its so hard for a black person to run for a public office position such as president I bet the secret service is working over time with Obama and it also displays whats still in the heart of America if it was a white guy instead of Obama this would have never occured

Any one who goes for the higher office is a warrior and a leader! you dont realize how America ( US) is blessed! by the almighty Lord!!

Yes, but a "big mouth" packing a boat load of weapons and ammo should probably be taken pretty seriously.

This nutbar also made threats against Bush. Amazing how Silva left that little snippet out.

"Seems more like a "tough guy" with a big mouth than an assassin.
Posted by: JRP | August 8, 2008 8:18 AM"
That attitude is what got a lot of people killed. The first thing you hear AFTER the fact is... "I didn't think he meant it"
Someone packing that many weapons making threats I will take seriously and the person needs to be applauded for reporting it.

I don't want to defend this nutbar - and that's not what I'm doing - but David J's statement that "it is a felony to threaten a public official" is just dead wrong. The Supreme Court has said it depends on context. See Watts v. United States for an explanation of how "crude political hyperbole" is, indeed, protected speech.
The Supreme Court, very wisely, realized that our wonderful public officials could use their powers to quell dissent and curtail free speech if David's ridiculous assertion that making any threat against any public official really was illegal. That's why they found Watts innocent for saying that if he gets drafted "the first man I want to get in my sights is L.B.J." Since this crazy fellow also said he wanted to shoot Bush, Junior's argument that "if it was a white guy instead of Obama this would have never occured" seems pretty dumb, too. What color is Bush's skin, again?
Posted by: Jeff | August 8, 2008 10:23 AM
I guess threating Obama is bigger than threating the President
"Obama threat jails armed man in Miami"
'Geisel also was quoted as saying that "he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head," according to the Secret Service."
Who does the press love???

I totally understand this man grouping Bu$h with Obama. Obama is running for Bu$h's third term. Got my Obama flip flops yesterday. Bring it.

Earlier I posted (and saw here) a comment on this story. Now it is gone. To repeat:
Why do none of the headlines I've read for this story mention this person's threat to kill President Bush?
On Obama:"If he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself.''
On Bush:"he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head,"
Does the government not have corroborating evidence regarding the comment on Bush? Are the charges limited to the claim made about Obama?

Your argument is bogus. What about President John F. Kennedy?
Posted by: Bleu | August 8, 2008 10:47 AM
it's been very obvious from the very start back during the last democratic convention when they had obama read his prepared speech that the dim Dem's and press had found their flower child. the gushing that was present during and after the convention over the flower child has always been very remindful of the infatuation the press had with the clinton's during the years 1992 through 2007 bbho.

Can someone define "dozens of rounds of ammunition" for us, please? The standard box of 9mm handgun ammunition contains 50 rounds which is over four-dozen rounds.
I know you just copied the AP story and put your name on it, but you could at least clean up some of the messes.

Too bad Obama can't jail the people who "threaten" his reputation and controdict his campaign message like Wright, Ayers, Rezko, Alsammarae, Auchi and Ludacris.

Travis Bickle meets Lee Harvey O. and Tim McVeigh.
There are PLENTY of these guys out there.
But this guy's more an amateur--like Tim and Travis.
Not that he couldn't have used his phony flashers on the vehicle to insinuate himself into a vantage point.
However, I'd be more worried about professionals. The type who might be paid to hole up in an empty office in some downtown for months, waiting for their chance.
There's still lots of hate out there.
Come to think, this guy looks like Tim McVeigh a bit, don't you think?

> Can someone define "dozens of rounds of ammunition" for us, please?
Dozen = 12
Dozens >= 12 x 2
There were at least 24 rounds of ammunition.

Doesn't everyone have weapons? That isn't a surprise. What is a surprise is that this mall ninja was dumb enough to threaten a presidential nominee. Very stupid and he deserves what he gets.
Posted by: Weapons Boi | August 8, 2008 11:55 AM
Jeff, the law is still on the books. see: http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/871.html
(although the law deals primarily with the presidency and not other officials)
But, your example only shows that, on appeal, the Supreme Court found the jury in that particular case was wrong. It didn't strike down the law. It is still a felony if one is found to have made a material threat against the president. Disagreeing with a president or public official is one thing, even if using crude terms to do so. But threatening bodily harm? I agree discretion should be used (as with everything) to determine if the threat is "material" and would constitute legal action under the law. But are you saying you would not want the Secret Service to even investigate such a threat?
Do you know in 1901 that William Randolph Hearst suggested in his papers (TWICE) that someone should put a bullet in President McKinley. And then someone did!! Was that just freedom of the press, or could they have been held liable?
Posted by: David J | August 8, 2008 12:28 PM
You know, that talking point about "who[m] the media love" etc. get really old. I'm sick of it.
Have you ever heard the saying, "No man is a hero to his valet"?
Meaning, those who get up close and personal with public figures on a daily basis, have a lot more data to base their overall evaluation of a candidate than we ordinary peons who just read headlines and the crawl.
The press hated Nick Dixon with good cause: when you were exposed to him up close, you saw what an odious human being he really was.
Conversely, that very positive vibe from the press corps assigned to Obama is attributable to the fact that he is a Prince among men.
And those are very rarely encountered in life.
Posted by: ornery | August 8, 2008 1:48 PM
It's all fun and games until the left advocates for royalty: "Prince among men."
Yeah, right. Is that why he won't answer the media's questions? "C'mon guys, I answered, like, eight questions." To McCain eight questions is a warmup.
Posted by: Jeff | August 8, 2008 2:28 PM
David, Hearst couldn't have been held liable and wasn't. Heck, Teddy Roosevelt WAS shot while campaigning and went on speaking because he thought it would be his last chance to campaign. The fact that Watts was exhonerated shows that there exceptions to the rule you tried to claim made such threats a universal felony.
This guy doesn't sound like he's very well adjusted and I don't think he was making a political statement like Watts was, but the High Court's ruling still stands whether the rule is "still on the books" or not. There are exceptions to making threats against public officials. Freedom of speech does not extend only so far as your words reach the offended party's ears. That's why law enforcement should rather spend its time prosecuting actions and not statements. In fact I'm quite sure that's why this guy's weapons will be used as evidence that he was plotting an assassination. Still VERY hard to prove to a jury.
Posted by: Jeff | August 8, 2008 2:35 PM
Has anyone wondered why Obama is so good at giving speeches. He is in love with the sound of his own voice. I elected him to the Senate and so far all he has done is write a novel about..... HIMSELF>>>
Duh! Washington is broke Barrack? Try closer to home and start fixing Illinois. Think of it as your duty as a public servant. When you lose the election you are going to be an even bigger laugh to us in Alton. We know tall men when we see them. Look up Robert Wadlow or doesn't Illinois hold any interest at all.

Junior 9:53 AM- after reading this, I was thinking to myself, gee, it's a good thing that he also threatened BUSH, or some idiots out there might actually say this nut was just a racists, not to say that couldn't accur either, but you have to wait for them to tell you the FACTS FIRST. THIS IS WHAT YOU MISSED BY NOT READING THE ARTICLE>Geisel also was quoted as saying that "he hated George W. This seems kind of stupid.. IMO it seems like some bad ass with a big mouth, im sure over the past 5 years plenty of ppl have said how much they hate bush and have made the same or worse comments but our cells arent filled with them, looks more like an infringement on freedom of speech to me, just fyi im not saying this from a "i hate obama" pov i actually am a big obama supporter so that has nothing to do with it

Junior 9:53 AM-this guy didn't go after anyone based on RACE. He's an equal opportunity NUT JOB! As the article stated>Geisel also was quoted as saying that "he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head," according to the Secret Service.
It doesn't matter what race you are, running for president (or being president) poses threats from every crazy with all different beliefs about everything out there. There are dangerous people out there who will try and kill anyone in office, of any color, based solely on race. It's equal opportunity there as well.

The real guilty party in this case is the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, who allowed the mentally ill mother, Linda to abuse Ray and his siblings. The police, school and case workers knew what was happenings but DHHS did nothing to protect the children from abuse and neglect. When Linda Geisel chased a DHHS worker off her property with a gun shouldn't a red flag have gone up? DHHS should be the ones investigated, but as anyone who has dealt with the agency knows they are accountable to no one.
