Obama's 'Gas Pump TV' ads pre-empted: The Swamp
The Swamp

Normally well-oiled Obama camp says it had a deal. Gas Station TV: No deal.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva and updated.

Barack Obama's campaign was all excited today about campaign ads that it planned to show on gas pump-top TV screens in Florida, big swing state.

Not any more.

The campaign revealed this evening that Gas Station TV is pre-empting the campaign ads that take Republican John McCain to task for supporting policies which, the way Camp Obama sees it, are making life more painful for motorists at the pump.

Obama's folks are attempting to redirect the embarrassment (though the campiagn asserts, for the record, that it is "not embarrassed") suggesting that, Ah, ha, McCain and his buddies at Big Oil are putting up a roadblock to the campaign message the Democrat wants to deliver to hard-pressed motorists.

But Gas Station TV -- despite a memo-trail suggesting otherwise -- is telling the press that there was no final agreement to run these ads, saying that the firm had been approached by a few campaigns but has made "a conscious decision not to run political ads.'' And at least one newspaper in swing-state Florida is writing off the saga as "a major gaffe'' by the normally well-oiled Obama campaign machinery.

"Once again, the oil companies and their friends are standing with Sen. McCain, the candidate for president who is proposing to offer them a $4 billion tax cut," said Mark Bubriski, communications director for the Obama campaign in Florida. "It looks like Gas Station TV doesn't want the American people to know about Sen. Obama's plan to offer working families a $1,000 energy rebate that would be funded by a tax on oil company profits.

"The oil companies have taken sides in this race, and they are standing with John McCain, because they know he's been in Washington for 26 years and can be counted on to pursue for another four years of the Bush energy policy that's made them billions of dollars."

The Obama campaign maintains that Gas Station TV had given its approval for the advertisement on Friday, though Sunoco was not going to accept a political spot, and they have some emails to prove it (see below) -- while the company asserts there was no deal.

In emails to the campaign's media buyer, Daniel Jester, a broker reported:

Subject: Here is our proposal based on final approval from GSTV

"Please note totals are for 2 weeks in each of the four markets .
And yes the GSTV owners have signed off on this
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks"

Subject: GSTV & GMMB

"Danny ,
Please note that GSTV has approved the spot. And I have enclosed a revised proposal to show the Florida markets only . There has been a reduction in the Tampa impressions to reflect a smaller number of stations as Sunoco will not accept political spots. I have also attached traffic information. Please advise if you need any additional information And what the next step is.''

And from GSTV itself, this Aug. 1 email 1 by Jeff Hupp:

"Please see attached that includes the digital formats. For the record, we prefer .wmv format. They can deposit the ad here (just advise when complete):''

Yet, as William March, political writer for the Tampa Tribune, reports, the company issued a statement today contending that there never was a final agreement.

"Gas Station TV was considering running political ads and we have been approached by a few campaigns. We have made a conscious decision not to run political ads on our network," David Leider, the company's CEO, said in a statement.

"At no time did Gas Station TV approve the campaign or receive ... an.. "insertion order, which is required to purchase ad times," he said, adding that the company had not received or reviewed the ad.

In Naked Politics, at the Miami Herald's Webs-site, Leider is quoted as saying: "At a time when presidential campaign ads monopolize prime-time, we believe it is important to be able to provide traditional advertisers with a clutter-free environment to showcase their brands and target marketing messages to a captive audience.''

The Herald's political crew suggests that the whole saga adds up to a"major gaffe'' by a campaign typically well-organized.

Were these Obama ads going to be "keeping proper air pressure will lower gas prices" ads or was it the new "I'll support off-shore drilling now that it's too late to actually vote on it" ads? It would be interesting to see if Obama knew he was going to change his tune after congress went home for the summer.

Obama recieves money from the oil industry... he just lies about it.

The last place I need to see Obama is when I'm pumping $4 /Gal gasoline because the Democrats refuse to allow domestic drilling.

Everyone except the political hacks we send to Washington seem to understand that we need to use every resource available including nuclear, domestic oil and coal, wind, solar, etc.. to get out of this mess.

There is no magic bullet that will get us completely off of oil in the next 10 or even 20 years. The people selling this BS are the same people who are selling the global warming scam.

Avoid citgo stations

drive at or below the speed limit

use cruise control

drive smarter

works for me

Obama invented the tire gauge and properly inflated tires.

Gas Station TV? Geez, what next Public Restroom TV? You can't go anywhere without being barraged by some ad or infomercial. And to be confronted by a political ad yet again? (no matter who's it is)

I'll avoid any station that has TV's at the pump, period.

And actually, Terry, I make it a point to go to Citgo. It's non Mid East, Nigerian oil and I know that at least some of the profits are benefiting the people in Venezuela. I consider it the lesser of all the evils. Plus, it's usually cheaper.

Bill, the scam is, the one you've fallen for, that somehow the drilling issue will unleash the floodgates of oil and the price will drop.

By the way, we already do domestic drilling. And there's a lot of land still tappable that is not tapped.

The grubby oil companies just want free reign to go where they please, and this is their opportunity to go for it. It's bamboozling at its best.

And they try to convince you oil pumping is safe. Meanwhile McCain canceled that event in the Gulf because, guess what, that same day there was a massive oil spill in the Mississippi.

Bamboozle!

Get educated on off-shore oil drilling. Use "the Google" folks! It's easy. Off shore oil drilling will NOT reduce the price of gas, ever. GET EDUCATED. As far as everyone making a big deal over Obama's comments on keeping tires propertly inflated, take a look at the fact that NASCAR folks agree with him. GET EDUCATED. Obama has received a small amount of money from the oil industry, less than $500,000. McCain, however, has received $3,000,000 from the oil companies. So who is more in bed with the oil companies? GET EDUCATED. This election is far too important for people to take the words of that sham Katie Couric as the god's truth. GET EDUCATED.

I'm with you, Terry. I avoid Citgo stations because I don't want that modern-day Fidel Castro clone Hugo Chavez to get one red cent of my money. Where I live, they're not cheaper; the Shell I filled up at this afternoon (and ignored the TV) was 14 cents a gallon cheaper than my local Citgo.

How is this a 'gaffe' for Camp Obama?
Unless there is evidence that had they kept their mouths shut the ads woulda started ANYWAY, then there's no 'mistake' on their part.
Quite the contrary.
And I LOVE Citgo--wish we could ahve Chavez as prez here, frankly. Failing that, Kucinich, Clinton, Edwards or Obama will all do quite nicely.
Hope Obama puts HIllary on as veep--as the only people who HATE her are old men and repugs.

Both candidates recieve money from oil companies but the difference is McCain acts to help oil companies and Obama does not.

This banning of an Obama add which explains how voters can save money on their gas oline expenditures show that oil companies are biased against Obama.

Obama cry me a river! The oil companys are not siding with Obama, even they know better! Obama's plan to offer working families a $1,000 energy rebate that would be funded by a tax on oil company profits.
This is not something Obama can offer, it would have to be voted on and approved. Who does he think he is fooling for votes!

That $1,000 energy rebate that would be paid for by taxes put on the oil companies would end up costing the people about an additional $5.00 per gal. at the pump. Do you really think the oil companies wont get their profits one way or another. Obam keep your rebates and stimulus packages, we need someone who will do something to help us survive this rapeing of the American public. Getting the auto mfg to come up with more gas efficient cars will only help the people that can throw away the new cars they bought within the last couple of years and still owe more than the cars are worth, to buy newer and more energy efficient autos.

Joe, what does the oil spill on the Mississippi have to do with off shore drilling?

Oh, so let me see. Add a 'tax' to gas/oil companies and they will make the product cheaper?

Yeah, I can see that happening.

Thats the Obama spirit! Tax em loud, tax em proud!

MJ, Prove it. What you can't? Just saying it makes it so? Typical Republican.

They got approval and then got turned down, if they're looking for sympathy from us, they can forget it ha. Why would they want to advertise his efforts to do away with oil at a place that sells it ha.

I heard he's going to have all these people work for him at these stations handing out flyers ha.....I wouldn't send anyone up to someone pumping gas at these prices with a piece of paper that poo poo's drilling for our own oil....they're libel to get their @$$ kicked ha......and don't hand them an air gauge, another source for an @$$ kickin.

Would drive away before buying gas with his mug showing-
Honest does Obama thinks he is a Living God-

No worries Tim, I'll help enlighten the brainwashed MJ. Contributions for Obama from oil largely are just employees and in small increments. McCain receives 3 times the amount of contributions overall from the oil industry than Obama. And Obama has received NOTHING from industry PACs. McCain, over $12000. See link below.

...and ABC News says so.
The New York Times says so.
Harpers Magazine says so.
And so on, and so on and so on... Are they "just saying it"? No, balloon head, they've done their homework. But I'm not going to do yours for you. Get informed.

The Obama side show continues. November can't come soon enough to rid ourselves of this buffoon.

Now, the Socialist is trying to decide what private companies can do with their product (advertising, in this case)? Its their company, they can run whatever advertisements they want!

Obama the socialist messiah is being told no for a change. This guy would buy spots in priests or ministers homily at a church near you if he could. I'm so sick and tired of seeing Obama 24/7 after November 4 when McCain wins we can be through with this lackey.
Imagine he is going to steal from oil to give everybody a $1,000. Talk about buying his election Obama takes the cake. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Yes thats right NationRight. And so can the oil companies! They can charge whatever they want whenever they want for as much as they want. Pumping more will not change a thing. Its all in their pockets and your McGrampies too!

You need to get some education on all that Drilling will do. EIA said if we expanded supply it would reduce prices. Some don't want the benefits to get out there, but trust me THEY ALL KNOW, it's basic 101>

You speak of McCain and Oil companies>
UPDATE: McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds writes to say, "Barack Obama's latest negative attack ad shows his celebrity is matched only by his hypocrisy, after all it was Senator Obama, not John McCain, who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill that was a sweetheart deal for oil companies. Also not mentioned is the $400,000 from big oil contributors that Barack Obama has already pocketed in this election."

"The oil companies have taken sides in this race, and they are standing with John McCain, because they know he's been in Washington for 26 years and can be counted on to pursue for another four years of the Bush energy policy that's made them billions of dollars." ~ M.S.

From my own connections in the Industry I can tell you that oil companies have in the past made contributions to BOTH parties. Not in equal amount$, but still $izable contribution$. Liberals Hate Texas, and rightly so, but here is some Texas wisdom for you that is at least as good as an Obama PSA:

IF you are in Business, But you are NOT in Politics, YOU are NOT in Business

When someone is working hard to shut you down, you DO need to choose sides.

Vivian C - Yes, this is the "change" that we seek

MJ - Ab$olutely, alway$ the fir$t axiom of politic$

Bill - Time, Typically the Independent variable on any y vs x Graph, BUT not in the surreal world occupied by democrats

Terry - Great PSAs, gotta have These EVERYDAY

Nick - Just waiting for the patent. Patent Pending

Gidget, RFB, City Guy - Taxe$, the mother's milk of all democrat devised schemes. Everything is limited except for the ability to pay more taxe$.

Teresa - somehow they ARE expecting the love

George - Just a more subtle means of promoting some much needed Conservation in this country of excess consumption

Conservatives Rule. Have a nice day.

Ok Republicans, you are so proud of this administration and its blunders. How's this for godd news: The number of newly laid off people signing up for jobless benefits last week climbed to its highest point in more than six years as companies cut back because of the faltering economy.
So argue back and forth about aprox 3 cents savings on gas in 2 - 22 years from now, if we drill more. So sit back while the economy tanks even further!

Scot- Perfect subject you bring up. I bet you didnt even know that anytime minimum wage is increased there are spikes in unemployment. Guess what was just increased !? You see, they increase it regardless as to wether companies can afford it or not, so companies have a choice of either closing shop or laying off. Now, the MEDIA won't tell you that, because it's much better for them to play the numbers against this Republican Candidate so THE ONE can win.

Another thing that is in the mix, is that everyone is being hit by gas prices big time. Truckering Co's and truckers are going out of business, restaurants being one of the top MInority jobs are having to lay off. It is having it's affect on everyone and the first to go are the workers. Wouldn't drilling be nice about now!?

I am so sick of hearing about and seeing Obama anywhere and everywhere!

I am glad to see the major news media is finally addressing the Obama saturation we're experiencing.

He told the people of Illinois who elected him as a senator that he was too inexperienced to run for the presidency. 143 days after becoming senator - after doing NOTHING for us - he launched his presidential campaign, leaving us in his dust.

Wake up, America! Obama has accomplished NOTHING and has no Federal or international political experience.

He is not equipped to lead this nation on a global stage.

November can't come soon enough.

McCain in '08!

I see the, not too, Swift-Boaters at it, hot and heavy on this topic. Oh, that's right, they're selling snake-oil and the nation isn't buying, not their drill, drill, drill chant, nor their nonsensical theatrics, with Newt's orchestration, in our House. So, what do they do, they try to distort, to fabricate, to slander, to mock and of course, to deny their own President's bungling. It will not work this time, not so, Swift-Boaters, our nation has seen your wake and it is not a pretty sight !! No more, Republicans, your 15 minutes are up !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Who knew that there was Gas TV? Those of us riding bikes, taking trains, walking, and otherwise living a Car-Free Life, had not idea. Stop being a slave to the oil companies and get out of your truck and onto your feet. Oh, wait, you live on a "ranch" 20 miles from a grocery store. Sad.

So, what do they do, they try to distort, to fabricate, to slander, to mock and of course, to deny their own President's bungling.... No more, Republicans, your 15 minutes are up !!

Ok teresa, so if we do start to drill are you telling me these people wouldnt get laid off because the price of gas will go down? Are you that dumb? The republicans, Bush and democrats have all said drilling now WILL NOT LOWER GAS PRICES!!! What part of that do you and your republicants not understand?? I see the republicans scare tactics still works on the dumbest of Americans. What a shame it is!
Your Bush administration is the cause of unemployment, Your Bush administration is the cause of high gas prices, your Bush administration is the cuase of the highest government spending in the history of the US and your Bush administration is the cause of the highest deficit on record. keep plugging for this loser administration and Grampy McCain and watch as everything goes to hell even more!

Re: Drilling --> Opening up more areas for drilling doesn't give US more oil. It gives THE OIL COMPANIES more oil. WE don't do any drilling. Instead, it only serves to line the pockets of Exxon-Mobile and all the other oil companies. Does the US actaully make any money? Yes, a small amount. But anyone saying "wes should get at that oil" doesn't know who "we" actually is.

It's known fact that it will impact prices. Why do you think that Pelosi and Obama are trying to get us to take oil out of the reserve....because THEY KNOW IT TOO. Did you read this?>

http://soundpolitics.com/archives/011155.html

The benefits to an area being drilled are enormous. Look at the drilling that took place in Alaska. They were using profits to allow all their people to go to any college in the country, they all got a dividend check every year for something like $25,000.00 per family. There were other benefits as well.

Louisiana and Texas got good benefits when they were allowed to drill as well.

A friend told me that there was someone on the radio saying that they should have these GAS CARDS for everyone who supports drilling to get their discounts at the pump, while the rest of you get a CARD that allows you to pay the high cost of gas until someone comes up with a sure fire way to do without oil....I can hold out if you can ha.

I will boycott any gas station that runs Obama's ads. Period. I've seen enough of fiction on TV already.

First, you fail to understand that drilling will bring more supply of oil into the market, and given that demand stays the same or is reduced, oil price will fall. This is where the consumers will benefit. Secondly, off-shore drilling will reduce the dependency on foreign oil to some extent (I don't buy the Obama's notion that the US can be totally independent from foreign oil in 10 years) which leads to a more stable economy, which will also benefit consumers.

DD-years back, Stevens and Young supported lifting the ban on Alaskan oil. It was your party, CLINTON, who supported the ban to be lifted. However, the scare that oil would all be heading over seas did not end up happening as it was suggested that it would do.
