Breaking email department:
Barack Obama may have gone on vacation, but his campaign is working overtime to get people ready for the next big step in the Democratic senator's bid for the White House: The naming of his running mate.
"Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign -- choosing a running mate,'' campaign manager David Plouffe says in a weekend email to Obama supporters.
The manager is offering to let supporters "be the first to know his choice.'' The Obama campaign is promising to alert people by email and text-message, sending the word to those who sign up for the running mate-alert.
"No other campaign has done this before,'' Plouffe suggests, telling the email and text crowd: "You can be part of this important movement.''

Comments
Ah yes. The Obama campaign says, "You can be part of this important movement.'' It appears this message was sent to the media. But, too late, they already are. (Daily Obama piece number one).

Dear Editor:
I do not think it is up to Canadians to tell our American friends how to run their country nor do I feel it right for political parties to send shock troops to the USA to help one or the other presidential candidates. However, it might be alright to pass a few comments regarding the alleged coronation of a man who as he says "does not fit central castings image of a president".
Sly words from a man who would no more quit his church than deny his white grandmother. (Has anyone checked on his grandmother lately)
I am not against "yes we can" Obama because of the colour of his skin. His brown skin with $1.41 gets a coffee at Tim Horton's the same as my white skin does with $1.41. I am against him because he is acting like Kennedy who also had a way with words while disregarding laws as if they were made for the information and guidance of other people and lacked a foreign policy other than crisis management as a result of his bungling.
For Obama to bring race into the fray was silly and immature. Senator McCain would never do so. Obama should keep that ugly part of society and the American past out of an election that should be fought on ideas. We all know there are racists around but now, I think if we ignore them, they have no power.
Lets hope Obama tells the USA and the world how he would govern if he wins and leave sticks and stones and name calling to kids. McCain seems much more qualified and dignified at this juncture of the campaign.

Frank: Obama brought race into this? Obama did? Really? You think that?
Amazing.

So is it going to be John Edwards, Mark?
Meanwhile, the media cover up in the Swamp and the Trib continues. Latest is people poking holes in Edwards's (non)confession, including the very HuffPo people who first noticed the Edwards payments being made to Reille Hunter.
If Mitt Romney or some Republican had had an affair on his cancer-stricken wife while proclaiming how he loved his wife, if the Republican lied time and gain about both the affair and the hush money, if the Republican had his campaign pay $114,000 to the mistress, if the Republican's financial backers continued to funnel money to buy off the mistress, the media would be camped on Romney's front lawn. And would have been camped there since last year, when this story first came out.

Bruce: You mean kind of like how McCain kicked his sick wife to the curb and started having an affair with the spoiled pill popping rich kid? The hypocrisy of the radical religious fanatical cult like right never ceases to amaze me.
Posted by: MASTER of REALITY | August 11, 2008 9:22 AM
Oh, and Bruce, there is only one candidate in this race who has cheated on his wife, repeatedly, while she was in the hospital, before leaving her and their 3 kids.
And it ain't the Democrat.
Thanks for reminding us of McCain family values.

Bruce:
They'd also have covered Vitter, Cunningham, and Lewis with the weight necessary for corrupt politicians. What traumatic thing happened to you that makes you want to scream "gotcha!" at every moment?
Must republicans always sound like drones?
Posted by: lostfourwords | August 11, 2008 10:03 AM
Brucew, Edwards lost, buddy. Give it up
But you're right. It is despicable for a man to have an extra-marital affair behind his ill or disabled wife's back. I'm sure the Republicans would never allow a candidate anywhere near the nomination with that background. Democrats just can't compare to a great man like John McCain on the family values front. The way he's stood by his only wife Carol, and their strong marriage despite her disabilities is an inspiration to all. He could have dumped her for some younger richer trophy wife, but McCain is made of better stuff than that.

I guess this is part of his " change". Big deal!!..Just another way to get to our youth..He would do better to bring them home from Iraq than send a text or email...He will not win anyway without a Clinton on his ticket. Hope he enjoys his vacation whil we are working and trying to keep gas in the car..Oh well..I guess Miclelle Obama will be rested for her opening night at the DNC...We don't want to see Her talk..We want to see our Soldiers brought home and the economy fixed..We want our jobs back....

I am not condoning what Senator Edwards has done, however, if you'd like to list all of the Republicans AND Democrats who have been sexually indiscriminate (with either sex) Republicans would top the list. So just get back to the election and the real issues and let the garbage go.

Obama, McSame, Obama, McSame. Whatever happened to the war in Afganistan and Iraq? The news is getting so boring. I wish it was December. Gates wants to send 50,000 troops to Afganistan. Where do you suppose he will get them? Maybe from the UN?

While I signed up to hear Obama's big veep choice---I want to remind everyone that McSame is NOT gonna be be my pick.
However---how do we WIN and get a candidate that doesn't mislead us about key things.
My mom died of cancer---and was a good and honest person to the end. Not so Elizabeth (the saint) Edwards. I'm sorry, but while she was parading her 'family values ' (I hate that phrase--define family--define values) around to defeat chiefly Hillary Clinton---she KNEW what was going on.
So, no free pass on that Edwards---and they USED those of us who gave our time and money and expertise as well.
No, PARTICULARLY NOW, the veep choice needs to be Hillary.
When you talk to people (and it's NOT a racist move if people don't support Obama---that is NOT a good arguing point, folks) who say they doubt Obama's experience---the one person who can help in that regard, is HILLARY.

You mean the troops that Hillary voted to send to Iraq? Those troops? How is putting a woman who didn't have the courage to vote against the war in the first place on the ticket going to bring the troops home any sooner? She was part of the problem, I just find it hard to believe that she is a required part of the solution.

Whoever they announce, do you think that some dirt will be leaked about the person (for all persons excepting Hilery). I wonder who's doing the leaking. Information of the type used on poor John Edwards would make J. Edgar Hoover feel proud.
Posted by: DON | August 11, 2008 10:42 AM
Will Obama act Presidential and pick a truly qualified candidate like Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Evan Bayh, Al Gore, etc., or will he make a political pick?
Stay tuned.
Also, did McCain cheat on and leave his wife or is that just a rumor?
Posted by: KGoldberg | August 11, 2008 10:44 AM
The Very fact that Mccain Supporters would try to get Mileage out of the Edwards Affair only OPENS the Door to Bringing Sen. McCains Marraige Histiry into what is Turnuing into a DIRTY (read ROVE Run) Campaign. This is a Confruntation that McCain can NOT Win!!!!! Yeah, I've been so impressed ny how Hillary has always been the one to break the stories about Bill's affairs. No lying to the american people by her. No coverups by her. No sir, she has always told everyone about the problems in her marriage the minute she knew about them.

KGoldberg:Also, did McCain cheat on and leave his wife or is that just a rumor?
I almost hate to dip a toe here, since McCain's marriages have no bearing on my vote, but he admitted to cheating on his first wife and divorced her in 1980:

Even with the 24-hour-a-day media fawning, McCain is nearly even with Obama. Even with all that cash, Obama can't pull away. He barely even won his own party's nomination after losing 9 of the final 13 contests to Clinton. Obama is a deeply flawed candidate. He's a first-rate con man to be sure, but nothing close to presidential material. When Michelle Obama decries that "Our souls are broken," she is referring first and foremost to her husband. He's empty. He stands for nothing.
Posted by: Tom Cas | August 11, 2008 11:32 AM
It dosn't bother me so much that Edwards cheated on his wife while she was cancer stricken. It's that Edwards knew he was caught over a year ago and knew then he could not be nominated. Edwards made a deal with Obama to be the spoiler, that's what bothered me.
Posted by: Bessie | August 11, 2008 11:58 AM
I find it amusing how Obama and his supporters always go after opponents' divorces. How does any of this make Obama a good candidate? Obama and his slime tossing goons are without shame.
Posted by: Bemused | August 11, 2008 12:23 PM
Obama should pick an opposite. A black woman, who is middle of the road, has decent friends who were not mentored by crazy religious far left people for long periods of time, who has had no Muslim education, who will not raise taxes, who believes that in the third trimester unborn fetuses should not be killed, and who doesn't change her mind everyday onall issues, and etc.

Everybody in the real world realizes this email ploy is mostly a fundraising gimmick. A rather transparent, rather obvious fundraising gimmick.
Posted by: bruce | August 11, 2008 1:02 PM
bruce: There are, yes, lots of fundraising gimmicks in both campaigns. But you do not need to make any donations to sign up for the email or the texts, and the text sent to notify people of this didn't ask for money either.
If anything you can maybe call it a mobilization/engagement gimmick. These are campaigns, what do you want from them?
Posted by: Joe | August 11, 2008 1:14 PM
Yes, texting and emailing is probably the most efficient way to get the news to the press. It's efficient because most of the media is probably subscribed to Obama's network via their personal email accounts.
Posted by: Alz | August 11, 2008 1:15 PM
Does John McCain even know what texting is?
Posted by: Nickel | August 11, 2008 2:18 PM
Steve- thanks, at least that does point out that McCain was seperated from his wife when he and Cindy wanted to marry.

Posted by: now what | August 11, 2008 3:02 PM
It is not that Obama is 'a deeply flawed candidate,' Tom. It is that we are a deeply flawed society, in which many are fighting with all their might and misinformation to prevent the election of a black man as president. The daily flow of distortion on this forum is a significant symptom of our disease. [Hi, Swamp censors. See, I didn't attack Tom personally, so you have to post THIS ONE.]
