Rep. Jesse Jackson (D-Ill.), left, an ardent supporter of Sen. Barack Obama's campaign for president, has found himself in disagreement with some of the things his father, Rev. Jesse Jackson, has had to say about Obama both on and off-mic. (Wire photos.)

Say Barack Obama gets elected president.
Someone would have to fill the seat of the junior senator from Illinois.
Rep,. Jesse Jackson Jr. says he'd take it.
"I wouldn't say no if asked," the Illinois Democrat says.
Well no, he serves as a national co-chairman for Obama's campaign for president. But in the past, Congressional Quarterly notes in its report of Jackson's willingness to rise to the call, he has declined to speculate on an Obama Senate succession scenario.
Several of Jackson's colleagues also have been mentioned as possible successors to Obama, should he win the White House. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich makes the call, with the power of appointment to an open seat.
Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran who lost a bid for a House seat in 2006, is ready. Reps. Rahm Emanuel , Jan Schakowsky and Luis V. Gutierrez of Illinois could be candidates. Schakowsky has made it clear that she is interested. Emanuel insists he isn't.
Despite the fact that he is more than 20 years younger than Schakowsky, the 43-year-old Jackson has more seniority in the House. Yet, if appointed to Obama's open Senate seat, he would become the chamber's youngest member.
An Obama presidency would also leave the Senate without an African American member, which may, or may not, figure into Blagojevich's decision, Congressional Quarterly notes.

What makes "Jr." think that seat will be open??

Oh NO!!!! Anyone but Jesse, Jr. Can we do better? We need someone who cares about the people more than politics. Jesse, Jr. in the Senate? Oh, the horror!!!

Duckworth got cheated out of the house seat.
Want to make republicans sweat?
Make them face (every single work day) a Vet who's missed both her legs thanks to their war.
Duckworth for Senate.

earn it, son.

Well, whoever decides they seriously want the seat better start planning for it since IT WILL BE EMPTY once Obama become president!

and wife Sandy secures Cong Rush's seat. the Jacksons will no longer have to hide their children in WashDC schools rather than attend Chicago schools.

Can we cut Jesse Jr.'s hand off right now? We didn't elect Obama to the Senate because he was black - Obama represents the entire state of Illinois. Race should never be considered a factor in determining our next Senator. There are better Democrats in Illinois than this political hack. Heck, there are better Republicans in Illinois that should be looked at long before Jesse Jr.

No, no, no, no, no.....corrupt, corrupt, corrupt. He just wants to build an airport, give all his buddies jobs and take money under the table. Strong arm everyone involved. Jackson has done NOTHING for the people of Illinois in Congress....he will do nothing but spend money in the Senate. No, no, no, no, no, no, no......no more Jacksons.

Sorry, appointing JJJ would just serve to corroborate the claim the trolls are making that Barack is a Machine politician.
Which is untrue.
But JJJ is fer sure.
Duckworth wd fill the "improbable outsider" slot left in the Senate if he's elected.
But: JJJ would be much better than Rahmmanuel, who's obviously been trying to figure out a way to advance his own interest since 2004, when Barack took "his" Senate seat away.
Posted by: ornery | August 1, 2008 11:01 PM
Jesse or Jan would be fine by me. I'm sure downstate and the collar counties would love to have a hardcore liberal representing them in the Senate. Not sure Obama would of won if he ran against a Republican who wasn't insane back in 2004.
Jan or Jesse! Can you say Senator Roskam, Senator Bradley or Senator Kirk in 2010? Bring the Socialist on.

The Governor may also be considering Patrick Fitzgerald and Lisa Madigan.

Isnt this the same Jesse Jr that his dad extorted Budweiser with a boycott if Budweiser didnt give him a distribution? Sounds like the Messiah B. Hussein Obama should put him on VP slot.He better, or Al,Jesse and Tawana Brawley will raise heck!

Is anyone really surprised about this?
Posted by: Outraged | August 2, 2008 12:16 AM
Not a fan of Duckworth. She doesn't stand for a whole lot. Luke warm politicians don't excite me although I'm sure she's a pretty wonderful person.
I love Schakowsky and would be very happy with J.J. Jr.

Jesse Jr? God help us.

Man, I'm looking for more Stroger's.
What a joke.
Can't we find someone with real business and life experience? ...someone who has some knowledge?

Senator Obama will serve out his term in the US Senate, the one job that he was elected to do.
Posted by: Ryan | August 2, 2008 1:37 AM
Duckworth is a good pick. Really don't care for either Jackson.
Posted by: Ron | August 2, 2008 1:45 AM
Who cares? It's a fictional scenario. Senator Obama will be Illinois' US Senator until 2010. Then we can elect a better Senator to represent Illinois.
Posted by: ChicagoY8S | August 2, 2008 2:47 AM
I think Junior is county his chickens before they've hatched ha ha.
I'm not surprised they are discussing trying to get another Black to replace Obama. Chicago seems to be full of those who talk about race in a way you just don't hear anywhere else. Surely not in a way any White could discuss it ha. Could you imagine someone White saying that we need to think of a way to get another White guy in hrere. I understand saying we need another Dem or Rep, but come on, the media give these Chicago politicians to much of a pass they that don't allow others in a million years !

Well, Blowgo hasn't made one quality decision yet, so I'm not holding my breath for his answer on this issue.
Of the candidates listed by the Trib, there's only one that would get my vote and it isn't Jackson or Duckworth.
Posted by: eaderray | August 2, 2008 5:37 AM
Just what we need...another product of the corrupt Chicago political machine that can go to Washington and do nothing and then claim anyone who disagrees with him is racist. No thanks, I'll pass.
Posted by: John | August 2, 2008 7:01 AM
Schakowsky, Gutierrez, Jackson and Gutierrez are all self-interest, special interest hacks who would not well represent the majority of the state.
I would bet the miilk money that Blago names himself to get out of Dodge.
A sensible choice would be someone who has already served the entire state. Dan Hynes, Illinois comptroller narrowly lost the U.S. Senate seat to Obama in 2004.
I reject the notion that the replacement should automatically be an African American. Danny Davis would be a better choice, however.
A U.S. Senate seat is not a consoltation prize for someone who lost something else. If Duckworth could not get elected to the House, she doesn't merit being given a seat in the US Senate.

How did Tammy Duckworth get cheated out of a house seat. She lost an election that is called democracy you moron
Posted by: seanoge | August 2, 2008 7:17 AM
Jesse Jr. will have a problem getting elected statewide as long as there is Jesse Jackson Sr. Too bad his dad is a fool - there is a fear the son is too.
Posted by: Rebecca | August 2, 2008 7:25 AM
JJJ SEAMS READY TO TAKE ANYONE'S SEAT...EVEN WHILE RIDING THE BUS. HE MUST BE KEPT ON A SHORT LEASH.
Posted by: GPOSNER | August 2, 2008 7:39 AM
Perfect. Don't you think? You'll be replacing one idiot for another. These crooked, lying, SLOBS that inhabit OUR Gov't. cannot be what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they gave us a Representative Republic. Can we PLEASE have TERM LIMITS now?
Posted by: Timothy L. Pennell | August 2, 2008 7:51 AM
That sounds like soemthing Blago would do. Illinois would become a bigger poitical embarassment then it already is. The names I've heard are his, Schnaowsky and Duckworth.
And to Jesse Sr remark about earning it - "Why should he start now?"
Posted by: Terry | August 2, 2008 8:01 AM
Jesse Jackson Jr. would make a great Senator for the state of Illinois. He is a hard working, sincere, intelligent young man who is dedicated to his constituents. He should be given a chance to show what he can do.
Posted by: GEEP | August 2, 2008 8:53 AM
Have to go to a black person, not Jan for sure, she is too Evanston white-
Posted by: George | August 2, 2008 9:39 AM
What's new about substituting one product of the corrupt Chicago political machine for another?
Posted by: NightFire | August 2, 2008 10:34 AM
Jackson's a dreamer. Blago will resign with a deal that Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn appoint him senator in exchange for Quinn getting the governor's chair. Then, of course, Blago will expect to have some say in the appointment of a new U.S. Attorney for Illinois to get Fitzgerald off his case. In any case, don't hold your breath. The way the polls and his own goofy missteps are going, Obama will be lucky to carry five states.
Posted by: Danforth | August 2, 2008 12:26 PM
Jan & Jesse are way to liberal for downstate or collar counties (perfect for Chicago though). And don't forget JJJ's "dad issue" and Jan's "husband issue." Although neither is as bad as the Blago.
Better candidate would be someone with broader appeal than just big city Democrats like Dan Hynes or suburb's Melissa Bean.
Posted by: Drew | August 2, 2008 1:36 PM
"Jackson has more seniority in the House" - of course you think a black person can't have qualification -- and you think you're not racist.

As we in the hood would say, "hell to the no" re: Jesse Jr. for Senate.
This is a fellow that was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple.
He flitted around life, going to law school with no intention of becoming a lawyer (and did not pass the bar);
went to seminary school with no intention of becoming a clergyman;
was on the hotel workers union payroll until such time as Mel Reynolds imploded with the sex charges and he lucked into the seat.
As for saving the seat for an African American, that argument did not resonate with him when he supported a white person, Bob Fioretti, for an Aldermanic seat in the Black 2nd Ward of Chicago against a black female incumbent.
That seat had been held by a black for over 60 years and Junior, at the behest of unions, supported the white candidate.
Junior and the whole Jackson mafia envision themselves as some sort of Black version of the Kennedy family, albeit without the class of Camelot.
Junior is truly a young man without focus.
He wants to be a lawyer, then bails out;
wants to be a minister, then bails out;
wants to be Mayor of Chicago, then chickens out;
wants a Peotone airport but then the South Surburban politicians do an end run around him for control of the airport and he runs to Daddy to intercede with IL Senate President Emil Jones for help.
Says that he will enroll his children in Chicago Public Schools if his wife wins her aldermanic seat.
She wins, but the kids are still in the Washington DC private schools and his wife spends 3-4 days a week in Washington instead of tending to the people's business in Chicago.
This guy and the whole Jackson family is bad news.
They are only in the forefront because lazy whites in the media find it convenient to have one source to talk to regarding Black issues.
Ask most blacks and we say, who the hell are the Jacksons to speak for me ?

Jesse Junior, Affirmative Action, Governor Blagojevich, and Barack: Mandate for Diversity:
Best case scenarios amongst Democrats have anointed Senator Obama with the Oval Office irrespective of the coming McCain juggernaut combined with fickle fawning mainstream media coming Barack-meltdown. The Hillary/Femme factor will arise out of Denver affirmative action euphoria as Senator Clinton is shunned as the deserved running mate in lieu of a white male Blue Dog to firm up Obama-support in Dixie. Self-righteous post-civil rights mau-mau's with white liberal power mongers in tow will assault the body politic with please for Obama's Senate seat to go to: another African-American with G-Rod's coalescence. By their standards: it is only FAIR: like appointing Clarence Thomas to Thurgood Marshalls seat as the only BLACK on the Supreme Court ( a classic case of this policy backfiring?)
Junior has earmarked his legacy by vociferously fighting to hold Baracks' coat during speeches and pushing Jesse Sr. under the runaway Barack-Bus for his anatomical heresies against the Leader of our Times whom he would have serve as Eunuch I of Transformed America, a land too busy taxing corporations to fund make work jobs to pursue a phony war on terror, a land too devoted to reachers unions to ever reform education in the inner-city. A Brave New world with the same restrictive NO-DRILL energy policies which keep gas prices high by re-assuring speculators that they will never expand the domestic supply of oil for gas, only to later BASH like BUSH the markets for the act of speculation, as if mere speculation is keeping gas prices high, when it's their NO DRILL domestic oil policy.
Sure, Barack can call Mayor Daley and have him lean on G-Rod on behalf of JUNIOR, but Daley owes Jr. NOTHING. So we have to rely more on the hyped and discredited race card of fairness under affirmative action to give Reverend Jackson's son a "fair" shot for Barack's seat. Good luck with that scenario. Only Tony R. could put that menagarie together.
