Barack and Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey: In the house, but not on the stage, for the nomination of the Democratic candidate for president.
by Mark Silva
Oprah Winfrey, one of Barack Obama's best-known supporters, plans to be on the field when Obama accepts the mile-high Democratic presidential nomination in Denver, but an associate says Winfrey will have no stage role.
Good friend and colleague Gayle King told Entertainment Tonight that Winfrey will be in the expected audience of 75,000 people at Invesco Field the presidential nomination night of Aug. 28, but expects no starring role in the historic event.
"Oprah has not been asked to introduce him, is not expecting to be asked to introduce him and I would doubt that she would want to introduce him,'' King said. "She thinks this is his moment. I know that she is planning to be there."
King will be in Denver as well. She will take her Oprah and Friends XM Radio program on the road and broadcast live from the convention starting Monday, Aug. 25. King appears regularly on Oprah, is Editor-At-Large of O, The Oprah Magazine and host of The Gayle King Show on Oprah and Friends, channel 156 on XM satellite radio.
She told ET: "I've been to Democratic conventions before, but I've never felt the way I'm feeling now about going to this convention. I think we have a chance to make history."

Comments
Ms Winfrey sure is a classy lady. We were lucky that she decided to choose Senator Obama. Her support for Senator Obama was very important to our Party, we, the Democrats. What a great country we live in and how much better it can become, if America lives up to her ideals and elects Senator Obama, as our next President.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Will never watch her show again, thought she had more brains than to back Obama-

I hope they don't even show her that night. I think her utra "Oprah endorses Obama" hurt him in the long run. She is not all that popular any more. She has more money than God, but let's remember, she is a talk show host who people have put on to some sort of a pedestal. I don't get it, I think she needs to take a back seat for a while.

Yeah, it's Obama's night. That's why I am not going on stage either.

More fluffy diversions from Obama's hard-left, socialist plans for America. For starters, higher taxes, redistribution of wealth. weaker national security and federally subsidized health insurance for 15 million illegal immigrants.

Oprah has lost alot of viewers since she backed Obama! Supporting his run for president is costing her, too bad! People expected better from Oprah!

it is long past time Ms Winfrey to get over herself.

This is great news. Obama does not need any hints of being Oprah's Book of the Month. There are thousands of people (myself included) that shun anything that has her name on it. I would hate to have that seal on his forehead.

What a ridiculous and insulting headline, "Oprah to let Obama star." from this and other headlines, it's clear where the Trib's sympathies lie.
Posted by: Ken L. | August 13, 2008 10:34 PM
George is deciding not to watch Oprah anymore. He didn't know that she's been supporting Oprah for months. He didn't know that Barack has been on Oprah's show, that she's campaigned for him, that she's been very outspoken about her support of an Obama presidency.
George is disappointed. My guess, though, is that George's unhappy wife will continue to watch.
And Oprah will continue to be No. 1.
Posted by: ChicagoMoe | August 13, 2008 10:37 PM
Oprah's smart enough to see what's going down. It's Obama and she doesn't want to go down with him. Oprah's never been tagged with a loser and she doesn't want to begin now.
Posted by: Erica | August 13, 2008 10:45 PM
So Oprah to LET Obama star at the Democratic convention? Does that mean that if Oprah is on stage then Obama will become just a sideshow?
With all due respect to Ms. Winfrey, does this country need a president and the free world needs a leader who can easily be upstaged by a TV talk show host? If Obama cannot stand on his own, perhaps he's not ready to be president after all.

Derrick,
You want higher taxes? Reelect George Bush to a 3rd term. Iraq has cost us $1 trillion. Now that's higher taxes brought to you by John McCain's hugging and enabling of GW Bush.
You want redistribution of wealth? Well a 3rd Bush administration would do more of that with the Oil Companies, Dictators in Burma, Venezuela and Iran along with the wealthiest 1% of Americans getting rich at the expense of the middle class. Only a terrorist would continue to back Bush's and McCain's energy policies.
You want weaker national security? That's what invading Iraq has done to our country. Can we respond to the Russians in Georgia? What if North Korea crossed into the DMZ?
We need a real leader in the mold of FDR who will rebuild our economy and Army. It's Barack Obama. You know it's true as well.

Oprah once again displaying class ind intellect. she backed the winning horse in this race and the one best qualified to be President. I am certain she is proud of having done so and so am I.

Thank you so much Oprah for opening my heart to Obama. I never thought in a million years that I could support someone like him, but seeing a spirit as loving and innocent as you go all out for him made me support him too. And the more I learn about him the more confident I become in him.

When Oprah doles out some of her personal weath to help others, she has a right to do what ever she wants. But until then people need to realize she is just another leech.

Derrick -
You have swallowed it all - hook, line, and sinker. You are repeating (apparently without thought) the illogical talking points of the lock-step neo-cons, who cannot imagine a US in which "We, the people" acutally exercise our power.
It will seem to be Obama's night, then his Autumn, then his election . . . but in reality it will be our night, our Autumn, our election, as we, the people, decide to try the future instead of the past.
And Oprah knows that this time it will not be about star power but about people power.

"More fluffy diversions from Obama's hard-left, socialist plans for America. For starters, higher taxes, redistribution of wealth. weaker national security and federally subsidized health insurance for 15 million illegal immigrants."
Beats the hell out of the current policies of Bush/McCain. We have a broken down military as we find out we have no clout on the world stage with our Military trying to clean up the mess in Iraq. We have a deficit that is out of this world! We will no doubt have higher taxes to pay off the neo nuts debts thanks to Bush/Chaney and the rest of the crime family. You neocons answer to our energy is to drill drill drlll. Guess what, some day that oil will be gone, then what?

Stupid headline. Oprah didn't "let" Obama have anything. She hasn't been inviting. I guess I'd expect no less from the MSM trying to make a story where there is none. Ridiculous.

Oprah could be the first black woman President of the United States if she wanted.
But the Convention must convey the universality of Barack's appeal.
Don't expect Billo to show any class.
Meaning, give a great speech supporting Barack.
Gore probably would if asked, and it would help. After all, he helped Barack get that great gig in the 2004 Convention. After which David Gergen said famously, "A star is born."
But, as Oprah recognizes, we are beyond the point that Barack can be allowed to be "pegged" as a "black candidate".
In fact, the "whiter" the crowd in the background from now on, the better.
Like that great crowd in Berlin.

Derrick, son, lie back and relax. It isn't going to be that painful. Try repeating this soothing mantra:
OOO BAAAAA MAAA.
Perchance, is your nanhy, maid, gardiner, painter, carpenter, waiter, one those 15 million???
You don't pay any social security tax or other tax on what you pay them, right??
So, you begrudge them a flu shot or ER visit??
Derrick, you are a Prince among men.
NOT.

Thanl you Oprah for standing down! Although Obama is the one forecast to receive the presidential nomination, it sure is nice that you're willing to step aside so that he doesn't become second fiddle.
Thank you also for telling me how I should vote. I was (and am) clueless. You're the best.

They're playing it safe! What happened here? Didn't Oprah endorse Obama earlier? Something is going on. How can Obama bring down a talk show like "Oprah?" Hmm... Let me just tell you folks on the Democrat side: Some people thought the trip to Germany where all what-- 200,000-- people came out to listen to him would bump the poll to a higher point in favor of Obama. Sorry, not the case. There's just too much "Bling-Blings." Oprah herself couldn't take it!

How generous of Oprah to let someone else take the spotlight. Let's see, it's August, the new season is about to begin, so the publicity machine must be gearing up for Oprah. Will we all be fortunate enough to read the continuous drivel until Septmeber?

All Republicans should hang their head in shame and I am not exaggerating. This lying coward in the oval office did everything in his power to twist evidence and mislead America into invading a country that posed NO imminent threat to this country. Meanwhile he turned his back on Bin Laden. I'm voting for Obama because he will go after Bin Laden. He will fight the real war on terror.

I don't think her first big public showing was that good for her personally. I think she got a lot of heat. I think they read it as to racial, since she had never endorsed before.
I watched her show years ago and it was fun, but she started getting older and I think aging scared her, and she tried to deal with it publicly and she became completely self absorbed. Her words of support for a candidate did nothin for me. Stars usually don't.
Posted by: here's another thought | August 14, 2008 4:58 AM
Oprah is LETTING Obama "Star?"
I have no words to really state my feelings on this subject.
Some one might as well say Martha Stewart is letting McCain "star"..
I dont understand anymore... I dont know if its the trib or what but society has gone down the tubes... Not to mention people go to school for 4 years to get a degree and then beat out plenty of candidiates for a position to write for this paper and we get a story like this?

I'm so tried of these silly people like Oprah, or Ben Affleck or George Clooney telling Americans who to vote for, they all live in bubbles that have nothing to do with reality and they all think that because they can look into a camera and read lines well ( which happens to be the only thing Obama has accomplished) that they have some right to preach to others of who should lead this country, especially when you hear most of them talk they consider themselves more internationalists then Americans, haven't seen Oprah building any schools in the US, what is her connection with South Africa that a couple of hundred years ago her ancestry came from there, I did a history chart on my family I found out that some of my ancestor's came from Norway doesn't mean if I make it rich I'm going to start building schools there and to those who say it not my business where she spends her money then it's shouldn't be my business who she votes for, she should keep it to herself.
Posted by: sam | August 14, 2008 6:08 AM
In the context of politics, Oprah should be required to label herself as an operative. She gave Schwartsnegger an hour of her prime time show, but NO time to the other candidates. Ditto with Obama. Her power is undisputed with the millions of viewers who will read a book just because she tells them to.
I've stopped watching her too, seeing the bias she is displaying.
Posted by: stheil | August 14, 2008 6:24 AM
Oprah fell off her diet again so they gave her the whole front row to sit in at the cult lovefest with Bam Bam. Watch her just spread the love !!! Too funny- the fairy tale continues !!!

Oprah gags me. Please please make her go away. Maybe she can create her own little country off in some island somewhere where the residents can sing her diva praises all day and all night. And she can admire her reflection in the mirror.
Posted by: so done with Oprah it's not funny | August 14, 2008 7:23 AM
I think the title should be written to "Axelrod doesn't want Oprah to upstage Obama". Why do I have the feeling that she will be planted in an area with people holding Obama signs that the networks will focus on constantly instead of the large number of Hillary supporters that will be there. This smacks of the same sort of calculation that led them to reseat people so that Obama always had whites sitting behind him

Well, did Oprah complete her 6 hours of volunteer work to get her ticket? And she had better not get out of line or she will end up in that warehouse jailhouse that they've made for all the protestors. Plus she better get to the place early because I hear they've got to close a major highway for his highness that runs right past the stadium. I predict it will be one huge mess.

The disgust for Oprah is just out-of-control. Oprah had to know that her brand would suffer by supporting any candidate of any political party for anything but the fact that she did supports everything she has stood for. We all have the right to make the most of our lives and by support a man she believes in no matter the cost is noble and I appreciate Ohh so Much. Go Obama!

The problem with the article is the headline . . .
Someone undoubtedly asked Oprah if she would have a role in the convention and she responded no, that it is his night.
A reporter or some editor selected a title for the article that many of the people who have submitted comments took as literal, and feel the need to bash Oprah.
And your comments expose a mentality that is bubbling under the surface (and increasingly above the surface) in America as a whole.
A "neo-con" talking point mentality where many, like robots and "ditto-heads" echo the raise taxes, weak on defense, scary "Willie Horton" mantra that is applied to any Democratic candidate regardless of who they are.
I have much more respect for Republican colleagues who can talk definitively about their value system as contrasted with Obama's, and specifically what his position on taxes are, and specifically what his position on national security is -- and come up with rational arguments why they disagree.
And though I might disagree, I can at least respect a logical argument.
But the emotional "ditto-head", fear-mongering, sound bite repeating approach is tiresome. Spend some time and educate yourselves on the issues, truly study the personal and public histories (and positions) of both candidates, beyond the sound bites and your internal biases, and let's have a rational discourse -- that is democracy.
We cannot continue to treat this election as an NBA or MLB season, where you support your team regardless of whether they are good or bad, right or wrong. We emotionally tie ourselves to the Cubs because their our team -- and say they're number 1 even in years that they suck (by the way, Go Cubbies!).
We should not treat elections the same way . . .

A sense of irony is simply not in the Republicant genetic code.
Both Barry and Ohppee are self-made blacks who started from nothing -- nothing -- and by any measure made tremendous successes of themselves. No affirmative action; no nepotism ala McCain and President Murderer. They got there on brains and talent alone.
If anything Obama and Winfrey represent the self-made American Dream that the Republicant trailerparkers idealize, yet the Republicants can't get over the notion that these two success stories are not begging for death, destruction, and dismantling of our government in the name of private wealth.
If you folks had any integrity you'd give credit where it was due, not offer childish sniping that proves nothing more than jealousy on your part.

Yes, Oprah will not attend but a wonderful judge here, Wayne County Circuit Judge Leonard Townsend (Republican, maybe) in Detroit has just given Kwame Kilpatrick the approval to attend the DNC - actually not an approval, since his defense attorneys did not make the request, Judge Townsend offered. Judge Townsend stated that it was an important event and Kwame should not expect to miss it. Republican will have a wonderful opportunity to latch Obama to Kwame and his shennanigans and Democrats everywhere will be crying!

Oprah is a class act. The only reason that hateful Republicans on here are making rude and disgusting comments about her is because they're afraid. Oprah speaks for hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people in this country, and she is a respected voice. I personally would love to see and hear Oprah speak at the convention but I understand if her choice is to remain in the background. Thank you for your courage, Oprah. And thank you for taking a stand in supporting a candidate for president. After 8 years under the worst president in the history of this country, we can't afford 4 more with McCain, who -- I can't believe I'm saying this -- would likely be even worse than Bush.
Posted by: ABQ Jeff | August 14, 2008 11:53 AM
Oprah took a huge gamble by endorsing a presidential candidate for the first time, and it's paid off tremendously. Hillary was going to win this nomination easily I think, but Oprah made people a good, long look at Sen. Obama... and the people really liked what they saw. Obama is going to be a great president, and the change that's coming in this country is going to be for the better... in a big way.

I am tired of the right wing Republicans and the Oprah and Obama haters. Both Oprah and Obama have dedicated their lives to make a difference in this society. Instead of criticizing them, use them as examples to give back to society. To whom much is given, much is returned. Therefore, all you self absorbed, ignorant fools need to stop the anti-Obama and Oprah comments and get a life. I would be happy to see Oprah on stage with Obama for the convention but she stands correct by being off stage. It's Obama's night and it's a historical event, therefore, let's honor him.
A MESSAGE TO PONDER:
SAY SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE OR DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.
