At the National Review Online, David Freddoso is asking why so many people seem to want to hate Sarah Palin. His headline: "Following 'Caribou Barbie.'''
He quotes a 40-something woman he met around the convention, someone not particularly involved in politics, who said: "I don't know who I'm going to vote for. I haven't been watching the stuff at the convention. But what really upsets me is the way they're treating this woman."
"You mean Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska?" he asked.
"Yes. I can't even watch my television anymore with what they're doing to her,'' she said. "It's just awful."
This woman was expressing "a fundamental sense of sense of decency and fair play,'' he writes, "perhaps also the frustration of watching a woman subjected to an unfair double standard.
"This week, the false left-wing Internet rumors about Sarah Palin -- about how her youngest son is actually her daughter's baby, about how she was an Alaska secessionist -- were as unworthy of the attention of the mainstream media as any claims that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. Yet they received that attention anyway, with some especially irresponsible tidbits seeing print.''
On the Internet, he notes, "leftists took to calling her "Caribou Barbie."

Comments
The liberals would have no problem with calling Sarah Palin names, but if God forbid, anybody calls Obama any name, he or she will definitely and immediately be branded a racist.

Now "Caribou Barbie" by itself is funny. It's the other stuff, and perhaps more important, the mean spirited manner in which it's being dished that isn't. Treating anyone this way should be taboo. The fact that it isn't is telling. Well I can't say enough about Sarah Palin. She makes it easy to get fired up over the McCain, Palin ticket. She’s a winner. I liken her detractors to skaters who go down hard. We’re seeing them fold like lawn chairs. Anyway, here's a clip from Jan & Dean. Bet you can’t watch just once: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX7X4FovYRA&NR=1 And, how ‘bout them Dems: lost in space, or true tales from the Office of the Pork-master General: http://theseedsof9-11.com

Why are they afraid to let her talk to the press?
Posted by: cta | September 6, 2008 7:33 AM
Who hates Sarah Palin? It isn't hateful to talk about her record of lobbying Ted Stevens for earmarks, self-dealing (Matanuska Maid dairy), and abuse of power (Troopergate). Righties always seem to want to bring up her children to draw attention away from the real issues with Palin.

Give Joe Biden the same press and air time as Palin.
Posted by: Vivian | September 6, 2008 10:04 AM
It was Palin's comment ""I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer — except that you have actual responsibilities," that I found most offensive. How she can compare being a mayor of a town of 9000 people, who are demographically pretty homogenous, to the real and hard work of fighting for social justice, political accountability, and human rights is unbelievable. It shows just how out of touch she is with the struggles of many Americans. Her ignorance is dangerous.

Mean-spirited?
The "pitbull in lipstick" gave/read a mean-spirited, sarcastic, untruthful, mocking speech, with obvious relish.
Why should she be treated with kid gloves? She wants the second highest office in the land. She's going to have to stand up to scrutiny. She can't expect to dish it out without having to take it.
Posted by: carol | September 6, 2008 11:05 PM
I agree. They make far too big a deal out of being a small town mayor and governor of a state like Alaska, which is very homogeneous and does not represent the country as a whole. I spent a lot of time in AK and they look down their noses at the "lower 48" - and definitely see themselves set apart. In AK there is a real sense of "every man for himself" - that is NOT what we need for the country. And someone needs to explain to her that the Iraq was is not a "task given to us from God". Scary.

"Caribou Barbie" is funny and, by the way, marketable! Expect to see the doll in the stores at some point. So what's the big deal? As I recall, the American Library Association did not revolt in the streets when the now infamous "Librarian Action Figure" was introduced. Oh, I take that back-- Diane DuBois, library director of Caribou Public Library in Caribou, Maine has been quoted as saying that "The shushing thing just put me right over the edge." Hmmm, same reaction as the people Mrs. Palin worked with in her little town.
As for the real Mrs. Palin, She does not have any values that the electorate would want to see enforced by the government (unless we want to live in Saudi Arabia), nor any experiences or qualities that would make her any more likely to resist being a power broker in the image of the Washington elite than subject to the manipulations of the faceless corrupt corporations bent on running the country through the Republican party.
Now, let's get over reacting to the poor (?) Republicans' whining about their latest puppet and talk about real isues, like where is Tiger Woods when Mr. Obama needs him most.
Posted by: Truth first | September 7, 2008 10:59 AM
Have you seen her record as mayor and governor in Alaska? She fired everyone who disagreed with her, is against big government but got a lobbyist to get her 27 million dollars in earmarks for her small town and over 200 million dollars for her state. She's anti choice but line item vetoed assistance for unwed teen mothers in her state, even though she herself had a shotgun wedding and is getting one for her daughter to a kid who calls himself a redneck on his web page. So yes, McCain's ticket is "Grandpa Simpson/Caribou Barbie"

I love the whole "Caribou Barbie" thing. It's a pretty cool nickname even though the Clueless Left think it's an insult. I wish the press would ask her how she feels about being called "Caribou Barbie."
I can envision her answering "Well, "Barbie" is a beloved trademark of the Mattel Corporation, so although I'm flattered and find the idea of a Caribou Barbie kinda cool, we won't be using her in our campaign. However, if Mattel ever decides to sell a Caribou Barbie, as a girl who grew up fishing and hunting in Alaska, and as the mother of three wonderful Alaskan daughters, I'd be happy to share my insights with their product development folks."

I don't understand this "mean spirited, unfair way" that people are treating her? Are you serious? She is running for VP of the US in 2008! EVERYTHING she does, says, has done and has said will be up for scrutiny. While I agree that family should be off limits, there are 2 things here that make this different.
1) She veto's funding for unwed teen mothers and pushes an abstinence only program in school. The irony is that her 17 yr old daughter gets pregnant. If that would ever happen to a democrat, hell would literally break loose on Fox.
2) She puts them in our face at every opportunity. She's on US magazine this week with her baby boy in her hands. They talk about her family and trot them out on stage during the RNC.
It's laughable. She will definately be exposed for why she's on the ticket and this ship will sink.

Caribou Barbi want to be a pitbull but she's too scared to be interviewed by the press. How's she gonna stand up to real threats if she's hiding from the AP News Service and the LA Times?
Posted by: Hart | September 11, 2008 8:35 PM
This woman downgraded the Women Movement in that interview. Charlie Gibson had to be soft and gentle with her. This has the potential to be a backlash on women in power in the future. Equality should extend to the press. This woman is not qualified to be VP. If she cannot have an interview without days of prepping, then go figure. By the way, they should prep her on expanding her limited vocabulary
Posted by: Eve | September 12, 2008 1:10 PM
It is definitely fair to talk about her ties to the successionist Alaska Independence party. She is pretty warm to them in this address she gave to their party http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwvPNXYrIyI
"Keep up the good work"

I think she is unfairly subjected to criticism. Contrary to what Dan said, I think hell did break loose among the liberal news media when they found out about her daughter... There is definitely a double standard here. It's all they can talk about. And just because she lives(d) in Alaska does NOT mean she acts snooty (if, in fact, Alaskans actually do act that way...I've spent time there, too, and they seemed pretty friendly to me), and I'm doubtful that the reflection on her small vocabulary really has any bearing on her leadership skills either.
And about the Saudi Arabia remark, please get your head on straight. She's definitely more anti-terrorist than Obama is, since he wants to protect our country by disarming it... but that's another topic.
She seems to generate so many nasty comments from liberals, but as Ryan pointed out, if anyone would make up a nickname about Obama's upbringing or race, they would be branded a racist. But liberals will poke as much fun at her as they want and somehow, it's okay... does that make sense to everyone else?

Why are you calling me a "hater?"
Why are you calling me names?
No body hates Palin. That little beauty queen wave is really special. But everything else about her seems to be a problem.
* The questions pertaining to book banning, hypothetical or not, should never have been asked.
* The firing of the Librarian, even if only temporary, was an abuse of power.
* Charging a per diem to stay at home is considered an offense that would result in a Courts Marshall if committed by a soldier.
* Allowing little girls to learn about sex in the backseat of a car as opposed to a controlled environment is irresponsible.
* If a little girl is raped, it would be deranged to victimize her a second time by forcing her to have the child of her rapist.
* The abuse of power allegation regarding the commissioner is very believable given the history with the Librarian—a wise and innocent person would work quickly to end the investigation. Avoiding the investigation against her and attempting to discredit the investigation is the same thing we have seen for the last 16 years—that is not change.
I don't hate her - I just hate what she does. See the link.

I'll tell you why this woman is dangerous: she belongs to a church that collectively believes we are in End Times and that Alaska will be the last refuge of Armageddon. She regards the Iraq War and her governorship as "gifts from God," and she has abused her power as governor of Alaska by hiring on high school friends (the department of Agriculture is headed by a lady who "likes cows.") Sorry, I don't want her or a vindictive old man with a bad temper and a history of cancer in charge of our nukes.

It didn't take long for the Dems to show just how selectively sexist they can be.
They've been questioning how Sarah Palin, a mother of five, one child with Downs Syndrome, can juggle the jobs of mother and Vice President. Funny, I thought the "Kirche, Kuche, Kinder" mindset was supposed to be a "Republican" forte.
She's middle America. She's a tough, no-nonsense reformer. As Governor of Alaska, she met corruption head-on and won. She's intelligent, articulate, and principled. She combines family AND career, a trait that should make the liberals quite happy. But of course, since she's conservative, she's some kind of traitor to her gender. The irony is mindboggling.
The repugnant asshats in the Democratic party and their partners in the lunatic fringe, are scrambling for any shred of character defamation they can find.
Keep digging, Dems. Pretty soon you'll be in China.

Wow you left wingers are just venomous. You can't simply disagree with her. You have to kill her politically in order to get satisfaction.
Well, two can play at that game.
Obama is the least credible, least experienced candidate ever to run for election to any political office. He has never accomplished anything, has never been in charge of anything, and couldn't win an election until his chicago political buddies fixed the election by having his opponent removed from the ticket. It is a farce and a crime that he has ever been allowed to run for president, and a testament to the lunacy of the left wing voters and shallow pathetic celebrity set that say he will somehow change this country for the better.
He has absolutely no basis at all to claim that he is capable of performing the job. He has actually claimed publicly that running his campaign has given him the "executive experience" he needs to be president. This is unbelievably naive and ridiculous. Just by saying this, he proved that he has no idea what it means to be the leader of the free world.
Of the times he has actually cast a vote on an issue( other than "present" that is), he has voted along party lines 97% of the time, proving he is not one to "work across the aisles" in a bipartisan way. His voting record is far more partisan than his opponent. Remember he is stating constantly that his opponent voted with George Bush "90% of the time", in an attempt to create a sense of extreme partisanship on the part of his opponent. Well he voted with Nancy Pelosi 97% of the time, and we have seen over these last few weeks just exactly how bad of a leader she is.That is not change, that is more of the same partisan politics.
Of the 506 bills he sponsored in the Senate, only three were actually passed, making him one of the least influential and persuasive senators. He has even voted against bills he sponsored, when it became clear it was not politically popular to vote for it.
His running mate, a 30+ year veteran of the Senate is the ultimate Washington Insider who is so entrenched in Washington politics that he would barely recognize life outside of it. That is not change, that is more of the same.
His running mate has stated publicly MANY TIMES that he is not qualified to be President.
The most popular President in his party's recent history (Clinton) has stated publicly that he is not ready to be President, and to this day refuses to offer his complete support of him.
His running mate has stated publicly that he did not choose the best running mate.
His running mate has the reputation for, and a long history of, making horribly embarrassing gaffes ( Stand Up Chuck!) that are worse than anything Quayle ever could imagine, and his speeches are a known cure for insomnia.
Your candidate had been a close personal friend of Reverend Wright, whose treasonous tirades apparently pass for "preaching" in Chicago.
His wife has said publicly that she was not proud to american.
And the piece de resistance, His time spent in Chicago as a "community organizer" was spent in affiliation with ACORN, a group whose list of known "accomplishments" includes voter registration fraud and interference with the election process, which he apparently had a direct role in, and taught others to do, although that has not yet been proven, because no reporter dares look into this for fear it may turn out "their" candidate is a fraud.
This is the man who you want to be President of the United States.
Now I was able to say all of those things without coming up with a sleazy nickname or denegrating his family, or spewing any lies or slanderous accusations. There is no need to lie when the truth will do. Everything I just said came from CNN, not Fox. But as usual, you won;t believe any of it, because after all, The girls on the View and Susan Srandon and Barbara Streisand all say he's the MAN! And with the political credentials of endorsors of that caliber, none of the above should really matter, right?
Posted by: RavenMaven | October 3, 2008 8:20 PM
Palin is being treated unfairly, she patently unqualified and doesn't understand the vast majority of important topics at issue in this campaign. "Caribou Barbie" is an apt title.
Posted by: SolRosen | October 9, 2008 10:24 AM
And do you think that by making that slur ("Caribou Barbie") a common statement that you can limit it to mean 'only Republican women' or just 'one woman'?
A Barbie is a fashion doll made by Mattel. It has exaggerated dimensions, and it's main function is to provide a backdrop for clothes that are chosen to make a display. "Barbie" is slang now for a woman who has no other purpose than to be ornamental/sexual. But the deeper and uglier truth is that every time it is used, the double-bind on women's appearance vs. intelligence gets tighter.
It's catchy, but surely there are other catchy titles that aren't gender slurs?
Does Obama really *mean* that commercial where he says "I want my daughters to have the same chances as your sons"?
If so, why is that offensive title being bandied about for Palin? Take her appearance out of the argument, folks. It doesn't have a place here. Drop the Caribou Barbie and the even more offensive 'MILF'. The lipstick on a pig comment was bad enough.(1) She agreed to the Vice President job --go after her on her lack of skill not her appearance. Beauty/lack-of-Beauty doesn't have a place here.
Why are the feminists being silent about this offensive slur?
(1) Yes, I know that it was 'really about the Republican agenda,' but that he would go after a parody of the lipstick comment to make that point lacks sensitivity and defies logic that it wasn't meant to link to that pitbull-lipstick comment.
Posted by: MiddleoftheRoad | October 10, 2008 1:06 PM
I first heard of the Caribou Barbie comment on SNL last sat. when she was on. I too do not agree that these types of comments are warranted. How she looks means nothing, her politics do. She is a detriment to what the US and feminism are all about. I want to comment on RavenMaven's comment because "There is no need to lie when the truth will do". The comments made were typical Republican comments. Most of which were out of context and inaccurate. Michelle Obama did not say she wasn't proud to be American, she said she hasn't been really proud to be American. This does not suggest that she wasn't proud, she has found a new definition for pride, a renewed pride. As far of his experiene, it does represent change because he has different ideas than thouse espused by Bush and McCain. "voted with George Bush "90% of the time", in an attempt to create a sense of extreme partisanship on the part of his opponent" McCain said this same thing about himself so why would that be change. Biden was a good choice because it shows Obama surrounds himself with experience. Who has McCain surrounded himself with, Pailin, Gov of a state smaller than NYC ("According to the 2000 census, about 626000." This was in Wikipidia about the population size in Alaska.) Her town was smaller than a NYC public school so why would she be qualified. She was with Couric and sounded like an ass. She has no idea what she is talking about and incapable about answering questions, even those about her running mate. Again, this says a lot about McCain, impulsive and reckless. "he has voted along party lines 97% of the time" Yea so, he is in line with his party, what is wrong with that. He has worked with Republicans on issues and at times voted against his party. I appreciate McCain voting against his party and recognizing that the dems. support worthy bills. "making him one of the least influential and persuasive senators" but he is leading in the polls, so how can he be so uninfluencal? "His running mate has stated publicly MANY TIMES that he is not qualified to be President. The most popular President in his party's recent history (Clinton) has stated publicly that he is not ready to be President, and to this day refuses to offer his complete support of him." First on Biden, yea he said it, but that was before he know of Obama's politics etc, if he didn't feel he was so ready, why would he be on his ticket. Does your idea really make sense? NO. Also on Clinton when did he say that, last I saw he was out with Hillary campaigning for Obama. The Rev. Wright comment was so ludicrous that I can't even muster the energy to respond to it. As far as his affiliations neither of the candidates are innocent. They both have their bad associations and some have their bad decisions. I appreciate that you did not slander any candidate, that was commendable bad appropriate, I wish more could be like you. I find it interesting though that you felt the need to cite CNN and insist not FOX. Everything you said has been across the news for a while now, so why did you feel the need to clarify your source?
Posted by: Honestyispolicy | October 21, 2008 2:25 AM
Be serious! She didn't understand that Africa is a continent. Had she not been such a ridiculously inappropriate candidate for the office of VP, she would not have been such a target of ridicule.
