Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin: A new duel: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

For all the excitement that Sarah Palin has generated for Republican John McCain's presidential ticket, there could be a certain amount of second-guessing surrounding Barack Obama's dismissal of Hillary Clinton as a running mate - "passed over" is the way that the McCain campaign's ads have described Clinton.

Clinton in Tampa.jpg

But the best way for Obama to counter this may be with the deployment of Clinton herself: The senator from New York was on the road Monday in Florida, one of the states that Obama hopes to reclaim from the Republican column. Watch for some of her future appearances to become tandem affairs: Obama, Clinton.

That reported 20-percentage point swing in white women away from the Democratic corner and into the Republicans' in the new ABC News poll on the Obama-McCain contest may be an aberration of polling science, or a sign of a pointed new challenge for the Obama campaign.

"I think people are proud that the Republicans have a woman on the ticket,'' Clinton (pictured at a rally in an AP photo by Chris O'Meara) told reporters in Tampa last night. "The Democrats did it in 1984.

"It took a while, but the Republicans got around to doing it this year, and I think that's a great milestone for us as a nation," Clinton said at a news conference where she confronted questions about McCain's new running mate,

"It comes down to what the people are advocating for, what they believe in, what they will do were they given the trust of the White House,'' Clinton said. "The case is abundantly clear that we need to elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden."

This campaign tour - which included a stop in Kissimmee in Central Florida - marked the first for Clinton since McCain tapped Palin as his running mate. It won't be the last - and watch for Obama and Clinton to making some joint appearances to offset the picture that McCain and Palin have presented in their opening tour (see the video above).

"Tell us about Palin!" someone shouted from a crowd of more than 1,000 people assembled at the All Peoples Life Center gymnasium in Tampa's Hillsborough County, as the St. Petersburg Times reports. (Hillsborough County, by the way, has voted the way Florida has voted in every presidential election for a long time now.)

"She didn't bite,'' the Times' Adam Smith wrote. "Instead, Clinton shrugged her shoulders and carried on with her broad argument that the choice is clear this election.'' Clinton told her audience: "I don't think that's what this election is about. Anybody that believes the Republicans can fix the mess they created probably believes the iceberg could have saved the Titanic."

"The only nod she made to Palin came in adding two words to a signature line from her speech at the Democratic National ConventionL "No way. No how. No McCain. No Palin!"

I think Hillary Clinton is being very disrespectful by not addressing Palin. I think that's it's insulting to Obama and to Palin.

The choice this time is between two philosophies:
1. Self-reliance and freedom from big government in all aspects of our life.
2. A devastating socialism and continued government intrusion.

Here's a thought: maybe Obama should run against....oh, I don't know.....McCain?

The whole Sarah Palin phenomenon is nothing more than Senator Obama's chickens coming home to roost. After he defeated Senator Clinton, he had a golden opportunity to bind the Democratic Party's wounds---either by choosing Senator Clinton as his running mate or by choosing from literally several dozen top-tier, capable, qualified, nationally-known Democratic women. But instead, the "candidate of change" chose yet another man in a navy blue suit---a Beltway insider who has worked in Washington since the Nixon Administration. Is it any wonder that so many independent women and right-of-center Democratic women are gravitating to Governor Palin in large numbers?

The Democratic Party needs to come to grips with the fact that the majority of people in this nation are not thoughtful. Are not well educated. Cannot grasp the finer points of policy and nuances of position. This is a country that devours "Jerry Springer," for God's sake. A beautiful woman with a compelling story, a forceful personality and a catchy nickname CAN win an election JUST by playing Heart's "Barracuda" at campaign events over and over and over again. And she can win it for John McCain without ever saying a word about the the extremist GOP platform she and McCain are running on. Joe, take Sarah Barracuda down a notch and do it fast. Hillary, get out there and tell voters in ten words or less what Palin actually believes in, and how different those beliefs are from the dream you have for America's women.

"I think Hillary Clinton is being very disrespectful by not addressing Palin. I think that's it's insulting to Obama and to Palin."

Are you kidding? This is not her election, he didn't select her as a VP.
BTW - when she was speaking out against Obama for lack of experience you guys criticized her for being negative and, now you want her to be negative against a republican for the same reason !!!!

I was a clinton supporter and, now I support Obama because I feel that he is the best candidate left. Don't think people are dumb, they could make their own decisions

Are you surprised Hilary didn't talk about Palin? When is the last time a democrat was willing to stand up for or against something?

Isn't it interesting McCain gets everything in life by hooking up with beauty queens?

I find the entire thing truly insulting.

CC: What is disrespectful about refusing to make this election about the vice presidential nominee (a relatively powerless position which will have very little influence on the government) instead of the presidential nominee and the issues? Focusing on Palin, on having a woman as a VP candidate, instead of addressing the issues that both candidates represent, would simply be playing into the political game of perception versus reality. That's a game which can only be won by refusing to acknowledge it has any validity in the first place, as Clinton very wisely did.

Every time Hillary Clinton is on the road campaigning, she is reminded how Obama passed her over for Biden who got a grand total of about 75,000 votes in the primary. If somebody disrespects anybody, it's Obama who disrespects Hillary Clinton and the millions of women who voted for her, and it's Obama who thinks that a woman (even one with 18 millions votes) is not good enough for his ticket.

"The choice this time is between two philosophies:
1. Self-reliance and freedom from big government in all aspects of our life.
2. A devastating socialism and continued government intrusion."

Unfortunately lawhite, for a lot of people that want to be self-reliant and free from government "intrusion", it's very difficult because of the fact that people are not on an even playing field economically and socially because of past discrimination, which could take years or even generations to correct. Not everyone lives in your "Leave It to Beaver" world.

Let us not forget that this race is between McCain, who is part of the 8 year problem we have had in America and Obama, an honorable, trustworthy reformer who has been running on the platform of change from the begining. McCain's last minute pick of Palin was a strategic political move at best. It demonstrates his the reckless character. We have had recklessness and impulsiveness in the republican whitehouse for far too long. Our country is at a critical point in history and McCain offers no solutions. His poor health is very concerning to many Americans. The thought of Palin running this country, were McCain to succumb to health issues, should be alarming to everyone, whether voting indepentant, republican, or democrat.

How is Hillary being disrespectful by not addressing Palin? Do you really mean "not attacking Palin?" I know that you may be confused and think that Hillary is running for President-easy mistake to make, since she is the one who should be-but it is the job of Obama and Biden to "attack" Palin on the Issues. It is Clinton's job to "support" Obama and Biden, and that is what she did. Did you read this article? No, you didn't. You are blind with rage. If Clinton attacks Palin the repbulicans will use it against the democrats, saying Clinton endorses sexism. Stop letting your emotions get in the way of the issues. Clinton has said she doesn't agree with Palin on the issues and that we should vote for Obama. What don't you get. You should have respect for how hard Clinton has worked in the Senate and especially for the good work she has done for women. The only reason Palin is in the position she is in is because Obama made the mistake of not picking her for VP. The only person to blame here is Obama. Enough with blaming Hillary. Move on. Obama is going to lose b/c of Obama and his short-sighted supporters.

Obama blew it by not picking Hillary. Nuff said!

Is this the same Hillary that Obama dumped on and humiliated, forcing her to be on the stage with him when he declared victory over her? The same Hillary who was the target of Obama's slime machine in the primaries? The same Hillary whom Obama belittled by naming a white male retread to be his veep candidate? Sure, the dumpee is going to really campaign hard for Obama, the dumper.

Hillary did make a statement saying that Ms. Palin's nomination was a "great achievement" for Republicans.
It does seem that Ms. Clinton is saying the bare minimum about Sarah Palin which I think is smart.

Hillary is doing the right thing by showing support for Obama/Biden, highlighting the differences on the issues, and not attacking McCain and Palin on a personal level. Hillary is all class.

Hillary is damned if does and damned if she doesn't.

I am sure Obama supporters will blame Hillary if he doesn't win.

He fought so hard to beat her, now the Obama Camp knows they can't win without her...

Frankly, if I was her- Id let him know what it was like to be the under-dog...

Like the old saying goes.. Becareful of foot you step on today b/c it might be connected to the butt you have to kiss tomorrow.. and guess what? The Obama camp is puckering up BIG TIME!

The american people need to see the forest for the trees. How conveniently McCain who has been Republican for 72 years can now see the error of their ways. Not likely, this political ploy will deliver another 4 years of destruction and mahem. McCain already is delusional based on his comments for change, he's the reason change is needed. Heaven forbid something should happen. if he were in office. A PTA, gun carrying, pork belly supporter, for President. Yeah, right, just what the country needs. Come on republicans SUCK IT UP and make the best selection for this country and our children. I'm still waiting to make 5mil so that I can be part of the middle class. What a Joke.

I think Hillary Clinton is being very disrespectful by not addressing Palin. I think that's it's insulting to Obama and to Palin.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HAHAH AHA HHA HAHA HAHA....let me get it together so I can respond ha haha....wait ha ha ha.....okay, I got it ha ha ha not yet ha ha ha... sorry, I am trying to answer you... FIRST OFF, this is POLITICS SWEETIE, and Hillary is smart enough to know where a LARGE portion of her base went (McCain/Palin camp) and her politcal ambitions after this mess would not garner that base back if she screwed with their support of a new WOMAN that they have now supported in her absense on the ticket. It really WAS about supporting a WOMAN for these people, it went beyond political beliefs......these woman out here really are what the NOW campaign is suppose to be about. NOW is blowing this one and they will pay the price!

Palin isn't insulted, I think she would ignore such an asault anyways. She would simply point out that Obama may like to USE AND ABUSE HILLARY and pretend he has her on the ticket now that he sees his grave error and numbers dropping, but the truth is>HE HAS BAD JUDGEMENT and he is now up crap creek without a Hillary paddle.

Hillary is waiting for uhbama to sink 5 more points. Then Biden claims illness. Uhbama throws him under the ambulance and Momma Clinton rescues the faltering, incompetent Uhbama.

this race comes down to one question - that being do you trust republicans?

No, Hillary can't help with the search and destroy mission of the vast left wing conspiracy press attempts to discredit the outpouring of support that Gov. Palin has tapped into. Senator Clinton understands that many of the 18 million votes she got were because Democrats like me wanted a Democrat in the Whitehouse, but not Obama.

This race is between a genuine American hero with a long legislative record of bipartisan cooperation to tackle the tough problems this nation faces, and a Chicago pol with few accomplishments that measure up to his rhetoric. She will go through the motions, but both her and her husband probably think that this election is already lost by Obama/Biden - and rightly so.

The far left of Daily Kos and Moveon.org have hijacked my party, and there is nothing anyone can do win back the support of me or the millions like me who are sick and tired of being looked down upon and who don't have a voice in the direction of our party. There are millions just like me in OH, MI, PA, upstate NY, WI, MN and throughout 'middle America' who can live with McCain/Palin - and several of those million are working class women who like Palin - no matter what the press tries to do too her.

www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-perdiem9-2008sep09,0,7637908.story
It appears that Ms. Palin double-dipped when a governor, charging the State of Alaska for time she spent at home. By Elliot Spitzer standards, this is tame stuff, but it bites against her claims to be a crusader against politicians benefiting improperly from the govt. dole. Unless you're a Republican, I guess.

Obama is to blame for the 20pt swing among women because HE BY-PASSED Hillary Clinton as VP. This is OBAMA'S fault, not McCain's or Hillary's. Why would Obama choose Biden, a male, Washington insider who garnered only 70,000 votes in the primary when he could have made history, chosen Hillary Clinton who garnered 18 million votes in the primary?

The real sexist is Obama and the democratic party for ignoring Clinton.

I for one hope that McCain/Palin win in November (and I'm a lifelong democrat) so that Hillary Clinton can run in 2012 and beat them.

My Anger is at Obama for denying democrats the opportunity that McCain is giving Republicans to have the first woman VP.

Hillary is supporting Obama/Biden. She does not have to get down in the gutter and attack Palin.

Maybe Obama should have considered the woman's vote when he chose not to pick Hillary for his running mate.

Let's hope he can pull it out.

She is an anti-choice evangelical who wants to teach creationism to our children - which of Hillary's true supporters is going to be swayed by her? None!!! only the fakes managed by the Rove people. The Palin choice is a desperate move by the McCain handlers- you can be sure that the Rove team made the choice since McCain barely knows her. With her lightweight resume: beauty queen, sport fishing , snowmobile rentals, and 2 years governorship of an idiosyncratic state with a very small population. The more important facts- Palin is a hard right conservative, pro-creationist, against abortion even in the case of rape or incest, anti-animal rights, pro-gun, totally lacking in any relevant experience, a complete unknown to McCain- a beauty queen who established her reputation on right-wing talk radio- these are the issues that make McCain's choice unacceptable to the vast majority of voters. She is deeply involved in a political scandal concerning abuse of offcial power. Anyone who is pro-Palin is by definition annti-Hillary.

A vote for McCain/Palin 08 is a vote for Hillary 12. She knows that.

Vic wrote: "Don't think people are dumb, they could make their own decisions."

I think Obama is dumb.

He voted PRESENT instead of YES or NO over 100 times because he couldn't make a decision.

When asked when he believes human life begins, he responded, "That's above my pay grade."

Yes, Obama is DUMB.

Hillary had more votes than Odama. He made the biggest mistake in his political life Not selecting Hillary as his VP. Hillary will be back in 2012 for sure.

aycee wrote: "...Obama, an honorable, trustworthy reformer ..."

Tell us, what has he reformed?

In the article it states: watch for Obama and Clinton to making some joint appearances to offset the picture that McCain and Palin have presented in their opening tour. This won't work for Obama now he passed up the chance to pick her as a running mate. Too little ,too late!

Barack took Biden as his VP. McCain took Palin as his running mate.

One wants the best talent to run the country, the other just wants to win an election.

If you can't think of a better qualified woman as president than Palin, then vote for McCain. An ignorant vote counts as much as an educated vote.

Not picking Hillary was a perfect demostration of Obama's lack of judgement and intellect. He was too proud to pick Hillary and didn't want to be in Bill's shadow because, eventually, if Obama got in, people would have gone to Bill for answers to tough problems because Obama is just too inexperienced.

"I think Hillary Clinton is being very disrespectful by not addressing Palin. I think that's it's insulting to Obama and to Palin."

Are you kidding??? Hillary Clinton is not in this race. She is not being disrespectful to anyone. In addition, did you not hear her speech (and Bill Clinton's speech) at the DNC? Anyone who thinks she is being disrespetful is ou tof their mind. If anyone is disrespectful, it's Obama for not even considering her as VP. This is Obama's race to lose and his arrogance clearly got the best of him.

McCain / Palin 2008!

Hillary will not attack Palin. She has too much respect for women in politics to take part in what Obama's campaign did to her. The Obama campaign's Swamp unit is wasting its breath on this one.

I dont think ah, Hillary dares to attack "the barracuda" else we revisit all of Hillary and ah Bill's escapades. She also might just allienate her women base for the 2012 election.

The "best talent" is a hack plagiarist like Joe Biden who has never held a real job in his life and has spent 30 years in Washington? Thanks for the laugh, buddy.

Is this the same Hillary that went on record as saying Obama is not qualified to be President?

This has got to be a joke...HILLARY help with the women vote! LOL. Hello?!?! She lost the Democratic nomination to Obama! Women's votes didn't help her out to win that how is she going to steer anymore votes toward Obama!!! PLEASE! What galvanized the McCain campaign is the conservatives Palin is attracting. If McCain wins it's because the conservative votes Palin brings, not because she's a woman! I just wish she was running for President. Better yet it will be fun to watch Palin stomp on Hillary in 2012! LOL

this race comes down to one question - that being do you trust republicans?

Posted by: Rjinchi 1:28 PM

>>>>>>>>>>YES !

Funny it doesn't come down to a question about tusting Obama, I think that must already speak for itself>>>>>>>>NO!

What a load! Because of Liberal government, Your food is safer, and so are your children’s clothing and toys. Your workplace is safer. Your ability (or that of your children or grandchildren) to go to college is much easier. You got a problem with that?

The choice this time is between two philosphies:
1. Facist control over our personal lives and daily mocking of our long-held social values.
2. Respect for our democracy and individual freedoms.

Greg asked, "Is this the same Hillary that went on record as saying Obama is not qualified to be President?"

Yes, just as Joe Biden did.

I have a question. Everyone blames Republicans for the curent state of the economy but things didnt start getting bad until the Dems took over Congress 2 years ago. THings didnt go bad until 2007 under a Democratic controlled Congress. They have done absoultely nothing since being elected. As an independant that voted for Kerry in the last election I bought their garbage and voted for them but now they are just as responsible fior the mess this country is in. Bush has been an awful president no doubt but the Dems in COngress have been just as bad and actually have a lower approval rating than him.

Obama had every right to pick the person he wanted to work with. Bill was the biggest stumbling block to Hillary's becoming VP-think about it folks. It had nothing to do with disrespecting Hillary.
However, McCain showed how little he respects women by picking Palin. He could have picked Olympia Snowe-a fabulous Republican Senator of great ethics and knowledge instead of the Barbie. No thanks.

Hey, Jefflf, in prior response. You say Palin is a light weight. Who has Biden or Obama governed? Absolutely no one. At least, she had to lead something like a state, what have they led? Nothing! Obama hasn't even done anything in his home state. 6 months after getting elected he started running for president and hasn't done a damn thing for Illinois. Even as a state rep in Illinois he had more present votes than anyone else which means he couldn't take a stand on anything. Obama looks good and that is it. All he does is make excuses for things that he has said before. He doesn't have enough guts to stand up for what he said before. Has the backbone of a jelly fish. If he is elected then we are in a lot of trouble.

Really lawhite.... thanks for breaking down the fundamental differences between what a real Republican is and a socialist. Too bad this election is between a democrat and someone who thinks he's a republican. Less gov't intrusion??? Have you been awake the past 8 years??? Dillusional.... so many of you are.

She's a speaker NOT a candidate. Guess Sen. Obama made sure of that in grand Chicago slime fashion.

Frankly, I don’t care that Obama’s black, Hillary and Palin are female, Biden is a white male, or that McCain is old (assuming I am comfortable with his VP). I don’t even care who’s republican and who’s democrat! All I’m really concerned about is their experiences/past accomplishments, their views for the future of our nation, and their plans to get us there. Everything else is simply irrelevant. Stop listening to all the propaganda and start learning objectively and thinking for yourselves! Our country’s well-being is in our hands and we’re too busy picking sides, bickering, and playing games to focus on the issues that will actually make a difference in the long-run. Stop pushing your personal agendas and consider what is best for the nation as a whole, for once!

Hillary couldn't even help herself...puhlease! Obomanomics + Hillaryonomics...Yikes! What will it take to get us out of the mess we are in. Not 1 but 2 Mavericks ...two kick butt Mavericks. That is what we have in the McCain/Palin ticket! No nonsense, not afraid to do the right thing, not afraid to cross any line to get the job done and done right! Our economy is in a sorry state of affairs I feel directly related to the high cost of fuel which affects everything from loss of jobs to a record loss of homes not to mention the rise in cost of all consumer goods.
We have become so dependant on foreign oil that we have neglected to fully utilize such natural sources of energy such wind power & solar power. Along with modern technology such as plug in cars, hybrid cars, v2g technology ,and regenerative braking technology. We still seem to be floundering as a nation as to devising the best plan utilize all that is available to us and lift ourselves out of this mess we are in. We need to take our closest look at which candidates put our economy and energy crisis at the forefront of their agenda. The Manhattan Project of 2009 by Jeff Wilson pretty much says it all...

Please people, don't fall for the baiting techniques used by McCain supporters in this forum or any other. The Republican divide and conquer techniques are as nefarious and sleazy as their originator, Karl Rove. Hillary Clinton is doing just fine and so is Senator Obama. Once the hype over Palin passes, it will be back to Obama trouncing McCain in not only the polls through truth and integrity but ultimately a landslide victory in the election. Palin is a "People Magazine", "Ladies Home Journal" , "Lifetime chick flick" lightweight who is a temporary diversion from the sickening mess John McCain and his Republican cronies have created in the United States.

Vinny-

Republicans greased the tracks for sub-prime mess, Iraq mess, $10 trillion national debt. You don't put oil in your car's engine and it blows up so you blame the democrats?

All of this revolves around twenty million---

Again, when John McCain articulated his no-nonsense pro-life stance, he stood head and shoulders above the competition. McCain delivered. McCain also delivered a pro-life running mate, who puts her money where her mouth is. That these two will standup and call a spade a spade is truly electrifying. They're standing up; I get it. Democrats' Achilles heel: “Most Democrats/Liberals here have nothing in common and dislike the very people they rely on to get them elected.” "Anybody that believes the Republicans can fix the mess they created probably believes the iceberg could have saved the Titanic," what exactly does that mean? On a lighter note, Global Warming is an apparent hoax. The snowmelt seems to have been caused by Sarah Palin's proximity to the polar region. The woman is on fire. Here’s Jan & Dean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX7X4FovYRA&NR=1 And, I got your political pork; right here: http://theseedsof9-11.com

Lawhite said: The choice this time is between two philosophies:

Oh, say, like
1. The Patriot Act and more evesdropping
2. Your desire to govern my body and legislate who I love?
3. Record spending levels and alms to the rich.
4. combine church and state to create a Theocracy, like those we war against?

BAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Peggy, McCain's pro-life stance is not as clear as you make it out to be. In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, McCain said he favors the ultimate repeal of Roe vs. Wade, ``but we all know, and it's obvious, that if we repeal Roe vs. Wade tomorrow, thousands of young American women would be (undergoing) illegal and dangerous operations.''

Once the hype over Palin passes, it will be back to Obama trouncing McCain in not only the polls through truth and integrity ...... Palin.... is a" lightweight who is a temporary diversion

Posted by: Jeff 4:04

Well, by now you have seen OReily ask your man of integrity a few simple questions that he refused to answer last night>like being asked if they trash whites in his church of 20 years (that is what the entire BLT religinon is made up of)> HE COULD NOT ANSWER and wouldn't ever be able to. We all know why, he wants to WIN. ***That was the best interviewing I've seen in all of the news outlets out there. Someone finally, and carefully, got answers to questions we were so concerned about>KUDOS Bill O. !

Your comment about Palin as a lightweight is fun. Just what do you call Obama ha, and if it's not a LIGHTWEIGHT (which we all know he is>Sarah is not a PIG with lipstick.... ouch, that'll hurt later ha) then one could reason that this EXPERIENCED MAN OF THE PEOPLE is getting his ass kicked by a LIGHTWEIGHT a GIRL ha ha ha ha. What's he going to do when Puttin says ' boo' ha?

I know men out there are enjoying this, but women are beyond elated, and comments like yours just fuel the fun.

I supported Hillary though I didn't like her as a person. I supported her because she was treated unfairly by men.
Now that the unexperience arrogant Hussein Obama runs for President, I will vote for McCain/Palin, and I don't care these nasty liberals keep trashing her. Sarah has executive experiences than the two Dem men.

Sarah go girl go!!!

Hillary will not attack Pallin because she feels like she has been "dissed" by Obama. Doing so, she believes, is like letting Obama "have the milk without buying the cow." If Obama wants Hillary to be an "attack dog," then he should have picked Hillary as his running mate. Also, I don't believe that the Hillary Clinton campaign is working that closely with Obama. I donated to Hillary on a number of different occasions during the primary campaign and have yet to get a fundraising letter from Obama. I don't believe Hillary is sharing her mailing list.
