Media Matters for America, the liberal group whose goal is to counter conservative talking points in the media, has put together the mother of all "lipstick" YouTube videos in an effort to prove just how commonplace the expression is in the American political lexicon.
Apparently, a lot of Republicans, including Sen. John McCain, have used the idiom in recent years without controversy.
This probably won't change hardcore partisan minds. But it does seem to reinforce the general silliness of this whole dustup started by McCain's presidential campaign.

Now you have it...No big deal. Perhaps now we can get on with the issues and think of our Country..This topic is worn out...

I'd like to know what brand of lipstick they are using. Is it Maybelline or Sephora?

Hmmm... white politicians say "lipstick on a pig" - no reaction. Black politician says "lipstick on a pig" - outrage! There was a time that if a black man were even suspected of sullying the reputation of a white woman, his burnt corpse would soon be seen dangling from a tree.
But we're more civilized now - such suspicions are now expressed as verbal outrage on cable "news".

Frank James bends over backwards to give a partisan hack outfit like Media Matters his audience. How sad.
At least he's finally referring to them as liberal. For years he was trying to pawn them off as media watchdogs and other nonsense.

KXB illustrates why Obama won't get the benefit of the doubt. He and his supporters throw the race card at the drop of the hat and now they look like hypocrites when McCain/Palin plays the gender card.
Remember when Obama's campaign and its supporters called Bill Clinton racist for using the term "fairy tale?" Now they're trying to play the race card again? What a joke.
Hey, while you guys were trying to gin up racial angst over this Saudi Arabia pulled out of OPEC. I'm pretty sure they gave Hugo Chavez the finger on the way out, too.

Gee Jeff, thanks for the reminder that there are more important things to talk about than lipstick on pigs. When do you suppose the McCain campaign is going to start talking about important issues? Or does "drill, baby, drill" and "four more years" pretty much sum up their platform?

The words "articulate," "clean" and "uppity" are also common place. Yet I seem to recall people lecturing on and on and on and on and on about how those words can take on different meanings depending on the context. I guess now that was all just a bunch of bunk, eh? Context, it seems, doesn't matter all the time, because Media Matters says it doesn't apply to Obama or Democrats. Just Republicans.

Rove is making Palin look weak by playing the sexism card everyday. She will soon be the female Jessie Jackson.
Posted by: pd | September 11, 2008 12:10 PM
Of course politicians have used it before. But once Palin used the lipstick line in her speech, she cornered the market on it, as Mark Brown said in today's Sun-Times. No fewer than 3 writers in today's S-T mentioned that fact; all 3 mentioned that Obama had a tin ear for including it (and that's the most favorable slanting of his behavior). The audience got what he was saying, the audience KNEW or certainly SURMISED it had to do with Palin.
Context is everything. And that's a fact all you "oh people have said it before" people are completely ignorining.
and having said all that, can we please go back to issues now? Obama is really the loser here, because for 36 or so hours, we've been talking about this, not any legitimate issues of the day.

I think the McCain campaign was just pissed off that Obama totally destroyed Palin's "lipstick on a pit bull" line. It was a great line and a powerful image to capture the Palin persona.
I do think that Obama used the line for that purpose, but he was careful to use it correctly to attack the policy of McCain.
But why the McCain campaign wasted their time and money to continue to destroy the line is beyond me.
Now every time we hear "lipstick" we will think of Palin, pigs and pit bulls. This will benefit Obama more because it is a joke line.
TPM media now has a McCain/Palin cartoon with a pig in lipstick. When Palin returned home, the McCain campaign had buttons with a pit bull with human lips.

"Drill, baby, drill" is an issue, Tom. Check how much it costs to fill your tank at the gas station next time if you don't believe it.
It's SUCH an issue that the democrats in congress just caved to the republican minority on it.
You can blame the McCain campaign for asking Obama for an apology that I, and lots of other voters, think Governor Palin deserves. There's quite frankly too much sexist talk among Obama supporters - terms like "caribou barbie" and "cheerleader" applied to a woman who is a sitting governor - whether the pig remark was aimed at her or not. I think it was aimed at her because he paused for effect after saying lipstick but I understand that's subjective.
My point is that the media are the ones keeping the story alive. If Silva and James weren't up to nearly 10 posts involving the lipstick remark none of us would be talking about it here.
The media covers the trivial because it sells and then they callously blame the campaigns for "going dirty." Ridiculous. The television and print media are the ones keeping this story alive.

So Jeff/Bill is cool with Saudi Arabia? And he expresses this sentiment on 09/11. That won't win you any McPoints, will it?

The reason why McCain and the other Republicans are making such a big deal about the "lipstick" comment is to distract the public from the fact that Sarah Palin is a serial liar ,which the press is proving day after day.Typical of right wingers, being the yellow bellies that they are, they are afraid of actually having to give factual answers to questions about issues that affect the American public.

Jeff, Caribou barbie and cheerleader are mild compared to names you used for Hillary and Obama. You can't have it both ways. By the way, McCain started this and the radio talk shows have been playing this up for two days.

Jeff,
I thought Obama paused because he's a stumbler and a bumbler when he's not reading prepared text on a teleprompter. You guys crack me up. When did you become a mind reader.

' Lipstick on a Pig ' is actually a Texas engineering term. It means:
This was one ugly job (the pig part). Here's the write-up (the lipstick part) detailing within the recommendations (pig or lipstick depending upon outcome). Good luck to ya.
As far as Django engineer is concerned, everyone is free to use it. No copyright, no trademark, no intellectual property, none of those kind of legal-ese issues.
Probably not my favorite America nuance, but how can you not love this country and the animals so indigenous within.

Obumble's attack poodle, Frank James, barks again.
Unfortunately, Frank James typifies the pro-Democrat, pro-Obama bias of the Trib's political reporters. Here's the facts from the Trib's own archives: since June 1, when both party's races were settled, the name Obama has appeared in a Trib headline in 248 articles versus 77 for McCain--a 3 to 1 edge. In 64 articles both names appeared in the headline.
And this is a newspaper that proclaims it covers both sides!
