McCain may win squeaker on skin color: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

A new poll tells us what we already knew, that some white Democrats won't vote for Sen. Barack Obama because of his skin color. It suggests the margin for Sen. John McCain could be larger than the 2.5 percent gap of four years ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks -- many calling them "lazy," ''violent" or responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 -- about 2.5 percentage points.

Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.

More than a third of all white Democrats and independents -- voters Obama can't win the White House without -- agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.

Sad but true....

I am an Obama supporter and yes I agree that Obama will lose because of his skin color. The reason is that no matter how hard most people deny it, this is a nation of bigots when it comes to black people. Whites, Hindus, Asians do not believe a black person is capable of running this nation. They consider blacks to be of ann inferior racial stock. They do not want to see the highest office of the land in the hands of a man whom they consider to be their racial inferior. They would rather see this nation in the hands of a mercurial, hair trigger 72 year old man who has partnered with the biggest serial liar to ever grace the national political scene. McCain should tell his supporters that if they are voting for him because of his skin color that he does not want their vote. But that wopuld take calss, and that has been in short supply in McCain's race to The White House. You know, they don't call it the White House for nothing.

Firstly I would humbly suggest to all voters to vote for the person you think is most qualified and NOT COLOR OF SKIN....Altho it has been evident for 8 years that we as a Nation are in trouble last weeks economic woes and the loss of more Soldiers brought it even closer to our eyes..Color or race has no place in this election. I resent the implication that racists tend to be Democrats..That is absurd and untrue...Obama/Biden have America at heart...McSame/Palin have their own agenda and both of their egos at heart.....This election will affect our Children and Grandchildren's lives strongly..We have no room in our lives for racism....

It took this long to discover the 800lb gorilla in the room?

There is further speculation in the media today on this study, that this is the reason Obama has tried to ignore race in the general election because it hurts him, even though he used it in the primaries in heavily black states with racist charges against the Clintons. Obama photographs are now carefully structured to exclude blacks, except for one or two scattered in the audience. Staged photos often show him surrounded by white women, apparently to counter Palin. It's clearly a problem among Democrat voters since, as the AP survey showed, Republicans will vote against any Democrat regardless of color.

Whites are supporting Obama.

Without whites Obama would not be a presidential candidate.

Just because a white supports McCain doesn't mean the white person is biased.

Different political leanings, not different skin color.

It is very apparent that blacks are prejudice due to more than 80% suppporting Obama rather than McCain.

For real, the 800 lbs gorilla has been stomping around for a while. Who knows how many racists will break for McCain.

This kind of poll is not very interesting.

At least this poll let's you get out your frustrations and stress.

That just kills me that our "wonderful" nation is just a bunch of bigots. When I read that yahoo poll, I cried...It's disturbing and it makes me sick!

What indepth thinking. I guess you have voted 100% for white huh? Only in your whitebread world racisim doesn't exsist.

I disagree that 80% of black people are voting for Obama over McCain because of skin color. Blacks tend to vote for democrats more than repulicans. This is the argument people try to make to make themselves feel better about voting for McCain over Obama because of race. There have been lots of black politicians who didn't get support from the black community.

1) Blacks go 95% for Black candidate.
2) Whites go 55% for White candidate.

Frank James conclusion? It's the Whites who are racist!!!!!

Frank James is obsessed by race. Frank James is not obsessed by the truth.

Were Barack to lose, it would be ONLY on account of racism.

Polls, schmolls.
The only poll that accounts is on election day or during the court challenges when the repugs try to steal it again.
And was this poll taken before McSame flubbed his answers so horribly on the economy?

This is a sad poll, but I have heard this from many democrats and this is in suburban Chicago. Many of these folks are the trade union members - Zook's folks.

I will take exception with Bruce's stmt - blackd vote for a democrat 90% of the time anyway so it is only the additional 5% that would be voting for because of race.

Not Squeakers- They are indepdented minded True Americans,

What warped thinking.

If a white votes for McCain instead of Obama they are racist.

Think not.

This is an Obama scam.

Maybe it's good this is out in the open now. Hopefully will prompt many in the next month to examine their own motivations and refocus on the issues rather than color. One can hope!

Unfortunately, I agree, in part, to the article. As a minority, I find it ambivalent when I hear members of the Obama campaign talk around the question given to them by the media, "Why are the polls showing a tight race?" I understand why they cannot said its because of his race. However, there are other factors that show the race as tight: A lot of the young people (people below 30) are not being polled due to them not having a land line phone. Secondly, as a person in my 50s, I have never been polled and all of my friends haven't either.
Who's being polled and what is the mechanism for the polling. What's kinds of questions do they asked, etc.?
My last opinion is if McCain wins his campaign would have to keep the election close and the RNC would steal it by caging and push-pull methods. But I believe Obama will win because of the under 30 electorate is strongly behind him and they are NOT racist. Hardly anyone in the "mainstream" media are commenting on this demographic.

"terry" makes the absurd claim that 95% Black racial bloc voting is excused because they usually vote 90% bloc racial anyway!!!

There's only one presidential candidate who's spent the last 20 years as the close friend of a racist. who contributes mega-bucks to that racist's church, who had the racist marry him, baptize his children, even suggest the title to his book. That candidate is Barack H. Obama.

I don't actually think Obama will lose because of the color of his skin.

That does not mean some people will be voting against him or not supporting him because he's black.

But Obama's real downfall may come in the fact that Sarah Palin is hot and Obama/Biden haven't figured out how to tell the American people that the issues are more important than Palin's appeal.

But no matter.

If Obama loses, he loses. This may or may not have long-term ill affects on the U.S. It's hard to say.

What is important to acknowlege is that the U.S. is made of people. And people make some bad choices based on stupid reasons, including race. But so what. Life goes on. Unless, of course, you have to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan or you're asked to fight Russia. Then you're just plain out of luck.

How many votes will McCain lose because of racism? It goes both ways.

"If a white votes for McCain instead of Obama they are racist."

That's about as stupid an argument as I've seen on this board. Which shows you've either missed the point entirely, or you are one of the racists trying to act as if you aren't.

No one says that all whites voting for McCain are racist.

However, as we all know, it is not politically correct, nor even socially acceptable to state the real reasons why they won't vote for him... Any one of us who is white and simply listens to conversations where the closet racists feel they are safe to talk knows that there is still a strong undercurrent of racism in this country...

So, please, if you are going to vote for McCain because he is white, just admit it. That would actually be more honest.

But stop trying to convince us that there is some other reason.

This survey's revelation of the deep hostility that so many Democrats hold toward blacks and now Obama's decision to exclude blacks from his photo ops during speeches make one question whether it's time for blacks to recognize the Democratic party for its racist past and now its racist present. It is obvious that many in the party that supported slavery and founded the Ku Klux Klan are not friends of black people and do not deserve their backing in elections.

The biggest mistake Obama did was make this race all about RACE. It started with his racist church of 20 years, then he went after Clintons of all people as being racist (helped by his church pastors and friends), he went after G. Ferraro as a racist, he went after McCain saying he was racist and Republicans were racists, then the comments that GIVING BLACKS GOOD SCHOOLS was REPERATION rather than PAYING BLACKS WITH MONEY for slavery tsk tsk tsk.

If I had looked past the church look what all I would found. My first instint was right on.

I won't vote for him because I find him to be someone who divides AMERICANS....a racist, and someone who USES RACISM CRIES TO WIN THIS ELECTION, ALONG WITH TRYING TO WIN MINORITIES LOANS THRU ACORN USING CRIES OF RACISM that destroyed our BANKING SYSTEM....he screwed himself with his politics and Minorities with bogus loans they couldn't afford.

RACIAL DIVIDE
Oneo the best coments ive seen on Swamp-
Lets hope the Chicago Tribune Reads it-

Unfortunately the legacy of slavery and modern 20th century racism, which has carried over into the 21st, may indeed decide this election.
Why? Another legacy; the Republican 'Southern Strategy'.
Enjoy another 8 years of Bush, America. You richly deserve it. Did I say Bush? Actually, it will be a lot worse. A Palin administration will complete the destruction of modern America.

Jamal-

Where's Paul Harvey when you need him?--And now, for the rest of the story: When Johnson and the Democrats pushed through Civil Rights legislation with the help of their Republican brethren in the North, those racist Dixiecrats ran over to the Republican Party and are responsible for all those reliable southern "Red States". The "racist present" belongs to the "Party of Lincoln", bro. How ironic.

Well, I for one would like to believe that race is not an issue. Fact is, I live in one of the reddest and one of the whitest states in the union and know it to be a fact. I've talked to many people whom I thought I knew, old friends, neighbors and casual acquaintances who have told me they can't bring themselves to vote for a black man. That surprised me, I thought we had progressed beyond that.

Those that say sarcastically, "Oh, so if I don't vote for Obama, I'm a racist" are missing the point. Just acknowledging that some people still have prejudices doesn't imply that people may have may not have other reasons for not voting for him, and are in no way influenced by race.

Sorry for mangling that last paragraph, but you get the point. There are people who will not vote for Obama because of his skin color, but that doesn't mean someone who doesn't vote for Obama is automatically a racist. And RACIAL DIVIDE--Put down the torch, take off the hood, have a cool beer and chill--you're scaring the children.

I am saddened by "white" people voting for skin color rather than who would be a better president. Obviously, Gore would have been a much better leader than the dumbass who is in there now! As a "white" person I am embarrassed by this delusional moron, whom poses as our leader. Other nations laugh at us because of this illiterate in the White House. One thing, he's smarter than John McCain! If you vote for this legacy, then, the bailout of the last week will amount to a hill of beans! God help us!

Nice try, Swamp, but no sale. The numbers now show that Obama has the same amount of white support as Kerry did 4 years ago. Racist? Catholics are also breaking for McCain in the same numbers that they broke for Bush 4 years ago. Racist? But polls consistently show that race is far less decisive than gender in how people discriminate at the polling place. Look, people, neither race nor gender has any place in this race. There are plenty of racists, and they should be condemned. Fact is, however, that Obama and his team have consistently used race to attack others and innoculate their candidate. This latest "survey" is just window dressing to (a) try to shame people into voting for the black guy even though he's less qualified and (b) have an excuse when the black guy doesn't win. Silly Obamabots: you backed Jimmy Carter - without his ethics. And you could have had a real Democrat in the White House this year. Want to see the real reason Obama is going to lose? Check out this youtube from my new heroine:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKgkBV-XBVs&e

Don't believe in the tank Frank James. A larger percentage of blacks aren't going to vote for Obama, either. The fact that there's such a group as Blacks Against Obama (and that newspapers like the Tribune won't report about them) speaks volumes. Frank will slap himself on the head and say "wha hoppen?" on November 5th rather than do his job and report on what's happening on the campaign trail today.

Could it be that even Democrats won't vote for a Socialist? Or should life long Democrats vote for him just because he won the party's nomination? Stop stoking the flames or racism, the quality of the candidate has more to do with this election than the color of his skin.

Bruce,

"the absurd claim that 95% Black racial bloc voting is excused because they usually vote 90% bloc racial anyway!!!"

Blacks do not vote "90% bloc racial", they vote "90% DEMOCRATIC PARTY". It doesn't matter which dit-wit liberal the dems trot out, the black community will support them. Race is not the issue - large gov't is.

So, many middle and lower income voters would rather pay higher income taxes with McCain in the WH while fearing the other candidate--a half white man/half black man--who is for lower taxes on those earning less than 200K. Sweet. I'll vote with my purse and other whites will vote with their lower brains.

What about his love for gun control? What about his love for carbon taxation/cap and trade? 8.00 gas anyone? No self defense anyone? Double your elec/gas/home heating oil anyone? Maybe that has nothing to do with his skin color. How did he win his elections?

Not one person -- except me now -- has pointed out that Racism is a mental illness, where people have paranoid delutions about others because of race.

RACIAL DIVIDE - that was a stupid, racist post. Period.

RACIAL DIVIDE--Put down the torch, take off the hood, have a cool beer and chill--you're scaring the children.

RESPONSE>
KKK were White Democrats. You don't know your own black history very well. They had an incredible show on the History Channel recently detailing the history of the clan and I can tell you that you need to look into a lot more than JUST the reality about the KKK....you'll be in for a bit of a surprise when you see all the Black Issues that were supported by Republicans that Democrats were against ha.

The Civil War wasn’t between whites and blacks, but between Republicans who wanted to end slavery, and Democrats who did not. And as ugly as the Democratic Party’s roots and legacy of slavery, the KKK, Jim Crow, and Disenfranchisement is, why does the party still exist today? answer below>

MISINFORMED PEOPLE ! ! ! !

Look up each item listed above,(on an honest site), stop calling people RACIST and EDUCATE YOURSELF BETTER ! ! ! !

TIME,
You're forgetting the 20th century, from TR forward.
Hint;The parties slowly traded places.

McGovern lost for the same reason. Everytime the Democrats have it in the bag, they go hard left. So hard that they lose.

This article shows how poor the state of affairs in this country are and the ignorance of racism! Let's see... do we really want to change this country for the better or shall we simply vote based on race and what sex the person is? The answer is obvious, yet my faith in the people of this country to do the right thing has hit an all time low. I am white and I'm voting for Obama because he represents change and hope... McCain represents the same old Bush crap who has selected a hockey mom as his running mate... just what America needs, the blind leading the blind.. NOT!

Bruce, 09/21/08, 4:50 PM:

Not so fast! The Blacks have been voting 100% White for Presidential Candidates since time immemorial! The Whites have been voting 100% White for Presidential Candidates since time immemorial!
For the very first time in U.S. history there's a Black Candidate for President and, marvel of marvels, Blacks vote mostly for Obama. What would you do, Bruce? Don't twist history with your percentages!

Maybe, just maybe, it's not about racism, but the battle for the soul of this country that the socialist Democrats want to turn into gutless Europe West, and that the clueless Republicans who are completely unable to shed the mantle of Ebenezer Scrooge. A pox on both their houses.

Thank you TR for posting History 101 to these blogging idiots that do not know history. The parties switched sides, folks, in the 1960's or so. Abe Lincoln would be a Deomocrat nowadays. KKK members are currently gun carrying republicans. Anyone with a primary education can see that.

An important note on the race issue though: While I am a white Obama supporter, I realize that there are higher percentages of poverty/ crime/ etc., with other races. I get this point that racists try to make. But, remove yourself from your shoes and put yourself into a 12 year old black kid's shoes for a moment. If Obama is president, his mother could now tell him "look Johnny, you could be president some day", which might be the first time many of these kids would've ever heard that saying said to them, as so many white kids have heard. Who knows what kind of inspiration that can provide to poverty stricken families and other races? Who knows how many more ethnic kids will study harder, stay off the streets, etc., because there would be proof that they really could be anything they wanted to be when they grow up. I guess I'm willing to place my bets on the underdog, as I have always done in my life, and see what happens. I KNOW the status quo does not work. Obama 08

C Mo--And speaking of Teddy Roosevelt, Republicans like to point out his conservation record as proof that they're pro-environment. It's as if the Reagan revolution never happened.

"Just because a white supports McCain doesn't mean the white person is biased." This is a comment I've seen many times in comments sections. It completely misses the point and disregards a crucial element in the American electorate. There is, without a shadow of a doubt, a significant proportion of voters who would under most conditions vote Democrat, but will not vote for a person of color. Whether they vote for the Republican candidate, one of the "minor" party candidates or abstain, they will help shift the voting majority toward the Republican candidate. This casts the aspersion of bigotry not on the traditionally conservative voter who votes for the Republican (though this voter may as well be or not be bigoted), but on the traditionally progressive voter who, against the interest of color votes against the Democrat. Most of those people know who they are, though they generally admit their bigotry only within intimate circles. Some don't even admit their bigotry to themselves; these are the most pathetic, but the result is the same: one candidate is chosen over another based not on ability to govern but on ability to match a pre-judged skin color chip. Until this aspect of American history is relinquished, the Declaration of Independence will remain America's most shameful example of hypocrisy.

Lets try this again, and again. This is the breakdown of voting on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which was Kennedy's baby and followed through on by Johnson:

By party
The original House version:[9]
Democratic Party: 152-96 (61%-39%)
Republican Party: 138-34 (80%-20%)
The Senate version:[9]
Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%-31%)
Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%)
The Senate version, voted on by the House:[9]
Democratic Party: 153-91 (63%-37%)
Republican Party: 136-35 (80%-20%)
[edit]By party and region
Note : "Southern", as used in this section, refers to members of Congress from the eleven states that made up the Confederate States of America in the American Civil War. "Northern" refers to members from the other 39 states, regardless of the geographic location of those states.
The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7-87 (7%-93%)
Southern Republicans: 0-10 (0%-100%)
Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%)
Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%)
The Senate version:
Southern Democrats: 1-20 (5%-95%) (only Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas voted in favor)
Southern Republicans: 0-1 (0%-100%) (this was Senator John Tower of Texas)
Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%-2%) (only Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia opposed the measure)
Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%-16%) (Senators Bourke Hickenlooper of Iowa, Barry Goldwater of Arizona, Edwin L. Mechem of New Mexico, Milward L. Simpson of Wyoming, and Norris H. Cotton of New Hampshire opposed the measure)
[edit]Women's rights

Northern Democrats and Northern Republicans voted overwhelmingly "Yeah".
Southern Democrats and Southern Republicans (the few that there were) voted overwhelmingly Nay.

It was a regional issue, pure and simple. The telling thing is that the Dixiecrats (like Strom Thurman) rolled over to the Republican Party and the South is now reliably Republican. I guess Racial Divide missed the last episode of the History Channel.

In the 26 major civil rights votes after 1933, a majority of Democrats opposed civil rights legislation in over 80 percent of the votes. By contrast, the Republican majority favored civil rights in over 96 percent of the votes.

Palin is one of the most notorious two faced liars in the history of politics. In an attempt to place in woman in arms length of the White House due to gender when it's evidence that she couldn't carry Hilary's "legal briefs". I am a black, life long democrat that would have voted for Hilary if she had won!
