The two candidates united briefly, and quietly, today for a remembrance.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

John McCain and Barack Obama today took a slow walk down a long ramp, descending side-by-side into the yawning pit that is Ground Zero, footprint of the felled Twin Towers.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and McCain's wife Cindy followed them into the pit, where the presidential nominees of the Republican and Democratic parties met with the families of 9/11 victims and some of the "first-responders'' who lost their comrades in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. A firefighter handed the Republican nominee his lapel pin.

The two candidates placed long-stemmed roses - Obama's pink, McCain's yellow - on the floral memorial at the center of the pit. And they paused there for silent prayer.

In their long walk back up the ramp, lined by the flags of nations that lost their sons and daughters on the day that 2,751 died here, McCain walked with wife Cindy, who stood between her husband and Obama, the New York mayor alongside them.

Michelle Obama, the Democratic nominee's wife, remained at home in Chicago, where her two daughters are going through the first week of school.

The two nominees departed, placing arms around one another's backs, with a few departing pats, before heading to a forum on civic service tonight that the two will attend, in back-to-back appearances, at Columbia University uptown. And that was it for a welcome truce in a rough campaign with less than 60 days left to the political Ground Zero of Election Day, Nov. 4.

Remember this moment of silence. It is the last.

Michelle Obama is too busy to come to New York to honor the fallen, Very nice,

Dear Swamper,

In a grammatical sense, I love your liberal use of commas. Brilliant. Now, is it not possible that a mother (Michelle) tends to her children today in any different way than a mother of any of the fallen would do, given the chance?

Swamper, that's moronic. She has young kids in school.

Swamper -- yes, it's called being a mom. Their children are still very young, and the first week of school is a huge deal. If the VP candidates had been there, but Palin's husband was not -- for whatever reason, like being home for the kids -- it wouldn't be such a big deal to you, would it?

I think Michelle did the right thing by being there for her kids as a mom. We all know she's thinking about the lost ones just we are (the one that couldn't attend for different reason)

Doin't forget Michelle Obama orginally Hated America but she "CHANGE "

Obama is a tosser!

How dare Obama toss a flower on to the sacred ground of the memorial to those who lost their lives in 9/11! No military person or true statesman would ever display such a total lack of respect!

I do not wish to entrust the nation’s security to a tosser!

Even old curmudgeons like me have to say:

That photo of Barack & McCain is one for the history books.

What America was supposed to be about, once upon a time.

George -- she never said she "hated" America. She said: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country.”

Don't forget that McCain said almost exactly the same thing: "I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company."

You can claim this is different, but look at it this way -- if you take McCain's experience in Vietnam away, if that never happened, would that mean he "really didn't love America" ? Valid question, and one that needs to be considered by those still mis-quoting Michelle Obama.

She never said that Georgie boy.

Interesting how Obama tosses his flower but McCain reverently places his.

Well whether you think she did it as a slight or not, you have to admith the Obamas have just about the worst judgement of any couple in politics. Or..... they really are just angry democrats that are grasping at straws. One or the other, but definitely one of the two.

The debate format for the volunteerism forum was much like the Warren debate. WHY ON EARTH DOESN'T THE NEWS MEDIA DO THE SAME THING. THIS WOULD CONTROL WHAT SOME FEEL IS BIAS ? ? ? ?

Americans were given a better chance to see the differences between the two candidates since they are asked very similar questions (altho, I would have liked them to ask Obama if we are better than anyone else ha). Plus, with them going in order and apart they can't use anyone elses answers to assist them.

I thought it was inappropriate for Cindy to attend Ground Zero. It gave the appearance that she was a buffer between McCain and Obama. Returning from Ground Zero McCain made sure she was between he and Obama. Tacky!

To Michele, You had a negative comment about Obama tossing a stem of a flower on the sacred ground in NY. I want Michele to do the same way Obama did, because I would like to see the stem of the flower to be placed way far of the hand reach by Michele. The only way to have the flower been placed to a further spot than what McCain did , is by tossing the stem. Either way whether people place the flower or toss it mean that both paid respect to the victims of 9/11. It is such an insensitive remark by Michele and others to have that negative comment about Obama. It is time to talk about our country and the economy than to pay trivial attention to how a flower should be placed in a big sacred place like the Memorial in NY.

It's obvious from the ad that Obama is midway through a toss of the rose and McCain is at the beginning of what would mimmick a javelin throw. The yellow flower must have proceeded like a missile well past the area Obama was aiming for (what appears to be a small white box). Incidentally it's obviously more than coincidence that Obama was given the pink (with gay overtones) flower. This is much like Paul McCartney being given the black rose which was called a coincidence by some, including the Paul McCartney look-alike who isn't half as talented as the old Paul McCartney.

Yes, the picture represents what America could be, but hasn't been, ever since the end of that first couple weeks of solidarity that faded along with the flag-decals afterwhich everyone became stupid.

To Swamper, yes Michele Obama has the right to stay home because she is a mother of two young children especially during the first week of school. Mrs. McCain does not have young children.
Your are an insensitive person.
It is better for you to pay more attention to issues that are important to us as Americans. We need a big change in the policy of the US. I think that the most effective president to be in the Oval Office is Senator Obama, because he is the man of change. He is the one who is not bias who says that we need to be even handed when it comes to our policy toward other countries. I have a big trust in him. Let's change the policy of Washington. We have created enemies all over the World without good judgment. Any country that does not agree with our government's policy, becomes our enemy. That is a bad policy. If most of women pay attention to their children like Mrs. Obama, we would be much better off. When a couple could afford to have the mother stay home and give her children enough attention and discipline, we would have been living in a much better society which is full of crimes, rape and drugs and many mothers do not pay attention to their children because they are too busy. I admire Mrs. Obama. The whole country would change to better if we all follow her footsteps. Many of our children are emotionally disturbed, unfortunately, because of the lack of having a mother figure in the house to give the children better attention. That way dealing with drugs would be minimum. We are in lack of family values. Kidnapping is very rare in some other countries compare to us, as well as divorce which creates big social problems.

HEY! I don't matter if Michelle wasn't there. Wanna know why?

Because if she had been there, they would have criticized the way she layed the flower and talk about how she didn't put it down at the proper angle. Then they'd go after Obama as well. LOL. sad but treu.

Probably best if Michelle was absent anyway. She is not his best PR tool.

The Obama campaign missed a great opportunity. Michelle Obama has been questioned on her patriotism. That question would have been erased if she would of shown up with the kids. The kids could have left school for one day it would have been ok. Instead he was alone and looked pretty akward. No matter what she should have been there.

The biggest thing OBama needs to do in regards to Michelle is to avoid giving any impression SHE WILL BE THE ONE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY. She stepped out to far on some issues in the beginning and it hurt him with her odd comments.

Then, he says she would be his closest advisor.

I think Michelle is purposely "lying low" these days - she is often controversial in what she says. Did others notice how Obama seemed uncomfortable in this setting and flung the rose into a pile? McCain and his wife placed the roses down with much respect, humility, and dignity. They understand the significance of the event. Obama does not seem to. Many of us notice simple gestures like this one.

To Seth S. Huggins:
Why would a reasonable person admit that Barack and Michelle Obama have poor judgment? Your comment is an incomplete thought. Bless McCain for his military service but lifetime dedication in Congress but his dirty campaign (esp. his VP pick) demonstrates his blatant determinism to win whatever the stakes, even to his own character. Obama is a decent and intelligent man. His rise to success and fame is truly inspirational. He's a man with a conscious which is a big change from some of the psychopathic personalities I've seen from the Republican platform this election. More than anything we need a President who can use his judgment to renovate peace and diplomacy. It is possible to form better relationships with our neighbors to the South and the East, all of it is within our reach. I don't understand how McCain's military expertise is supposed to get us out of Iraq. His background and hawkish mannerism will create more problems for the U.S. internationally. McCain's ambition reminds me of Nixon. Put simply McCain/Palin would be a big disappointment for this country.

Without looking too deep into this photo. The photographer must have been watching Obama more closely than McCain since you can clearly see a lot of action coming from Obama. And may I add, what a beautiful rose Obama has in his hand.

No excuses. Michelle Obama should have been with her husband at Ground Zero. The fact that she wasn't there -- will always overshadow the reasons she was not.

Earlier this year, Obama was too busy to attend the State of the Black Union event (Clinton was there, Louisiana had already voted in the primaries).

Then, he was too busy to attend the ceremonies for Dr. King in Memphis (McCain and Clinton, Sharpton & Jackson were there, but Tennessee had already voted in the primaries)

Now, Michelle Obama is too busy to attend the ceremonies in NYC.

The shoe fits...

If it was so important to be at home with kids this week, why was she was campaigning in Ohio on Sept. 10? She couldn't switch her schedule a little and get someone to take the kids to their private school? If they sent their kids to public school, maybe the babysitter could have put them on the bus. Everyone knows how great the public schools are around Hyde Park--Senator Obama is the great educational reformer......

Mrs. Obama couldn't take a HALF DAY? That wasn't the FIRST day of school for those children, after all--and that school tuition is 20K per child--I'm sure that someone could have looked after them, her mother perhaps, for a HALF DAY while she flew to NY and then back home--the same day. It's not like they couldn't afford the plane ticket--heck, they could have gotten away with charging the CAMPAIGN for a private jet to whisk her from Chicago to NY...for a HALF DAY.

Lame excuse. She should have been there. She made her husband look bad by not bothering to show up.

Actually, Michelle was in Ohio, campaigning at a Black Baptist church. The Toledo paper had a story about it. There's nothing wrong with that, but she wasn't home with her kids as this paper is reporting. Remember, facts are our friends. LOL.

Looks like MO was REALLY in Ohio campaigning for her Chosen One....So much for patriotism and respect for the fallen victims of 9/11.

They are all about #1, not this country. Anyway didn't school start last week? What a LAME EXCUSE!

Too busy to pay her respects as the possible future first lady? Too busy to perform a dance off on the Ellen Degeneres show? Oh, I'm sorry, she made time for the dance off, didn't she?

Michelle Obama, the Democratic nominee's wife, remained at home in Chicago, where her two daughters are going through the first week of school. At least their kids are in school. Sarah Palin doesn't go anywhere without her husband and kids in tow!

Just wondering...whos happy about defending obama in this thread now??? Hmmmm. Pretty awesome president you guys elected...Thanks.
