The Iraq war may have receded from front pages and evening newscasts in recent months, but research suggests it could still tip the scales of the presidential election in key swing states this fall - through voters' ballot-box reaction to the war's dearest costs: the lives of our soldiers.
So how should Americans view the war as they prepare to select a president? How should John McCain and Barack Obama talk about it on the campaign trail? And what should they do about it if elected?
We put this to you as part of our United States of Anxiety series. We invite you to read the story about Americans' casualty calculus, then weigh in with thought on the war, its costs and whether you see a path to "victory" in Iraq.
We welcome your thoughts.

It should be viewed as a total disaster by Bush and endorsed by McBush.

Let us hope that we can extract our troops from a situation they should NEVER have been in in the first place.
The War in Iraq was a war of choice based on lies. The Bush Administration neglected to listen to their own generals, and mishandled the occupation. The whole thing has been a money-grab for war profiteers , while our sons and daughters and brothers and sisters have bled and died.
George W. Bush is positively the worst president in all 200 plus years of our republic. Only John McCain could possibly outstrip him in this regard.

The war in Iraq is just a prelude to John McCain's Glorious Little War on Iran.
There is an Empire to be built, your sons and daughters lives are but a small price to pay for the Republican dream of the military conquest and domination of the mid-east.
Onward Christian Soldiers! the glorious religious crusade that Palin has shown us is God's will must continue!

There is no question, that the Iraq Blunder would be exacerbated with Senator McCain !! Our women and men in uniform would not have a friend, as they would, if Senator Obama were our President !! Senator Obama has stuck to his initial position, concerning the Iraq Debacle, remove our troops, in an orderly and disciplined manner. We do not another Nixon approach, as in Vietnam !! Senator Obama can gain expert advice from his running mate, Senator Joe Biden, concerning a U.N. deployment !! Senator McCain, may use the occupation of Iraq as an excuse to " Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran " !!! We do not need any more stupid Corporate wars !!
Thank you, to the good men and women, in our Armed Forces, who are serving over there and throughout the world !! We owe you a debt of gratitude, that we could never repay you !! Thank you and God watch over and protect you !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

The War in Iraq is past us. We're already in it, and our involvment looks to be winding down. Anyway
neither Obama nor McCain have promised to get us out soon, so it's a moot point.
.
What is relevant are (in no particular order) Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia and North Korea. I suppose if Obama were to bring his Chicago style of governance to the WH, he might try to bribe these nations into behaving. We can't know, since he seldom addresses foreign policy... too embarrassed to do so, i suppose.

Iraq has never been a "war".
It's always been an occupation of a foreign country with a false excuse to be there. So how can you claim VICTORY? Once we stop paying the suni & alkeida troops there will be no peace anyway. Get out NOW and bring the money back to the USA

That's exactly what's happened in Iraq for the past year or so.

When Bush dragged us into this war, he claimed that he would hunt down the terrorists and make America safer. Others whispered that at least we would get cheaper oil.
Look at the results. The war has waged on for years, killing American boys, Iraqi civilians... Bush even resorted to torture of prisoners of war. and what has it accomplished? The terrorists are as strong as ever, perhaps stronger. America's reputation has been almost destroyed overseas. Our rights have been eroded at home. Our economy is a disaster. And as for oil and the price of gas? They couldn't even get THAT right...
Going into Iraq was a huge mistake from the beginning. And we all know who favored going in and who did not.

Should we have had troops in Somolia? Bosnia? Gulf War One? Korea?
Was Bill Clinton's bombing of Iraq in Dec, 1998 over WMDs justified? Did he ever find the WMDs? What happened to those WMDs between Dec, 1998 and March, 2003? Were all the western European intellgence agencies wrong on the WMDs during 2002 & 2003?
Posted by: Terry | September 22, 2008 5:16 PM
Tell us Terry what did happen to the WMDs? Did Bush lie to us when he said none were found? Did the Iraq Survey Group lie when they said they were all destroyed before 1998? Tell us from your vast knowledge of the subject, what happened to them. I'm sure it's fascinating how everyone has worked to cover up the fact that Saddam really did have WMDs. Did the Illuminati take them? Or was it the aliens? We know you have all the secret knowledge from those broadcasts you pick up witth your dental work.

Liz,
If as you say the Iraq Survey Group stated they were all destroyed before 1998, then why did Bill Clinton bomb Iraq in Dec, 1998 over WMDs?
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1998/12/16/transcripts/clinton.html
Was he lying? Was it really just a wag the dog bombing of Baghdad for 4 days to ditract us from Monica?
You continue to make my point - Bill Clinton didn't know they were gone in 1998. Nobody between 1998 - 2003 stated they were gone - surely not Barack Obama.
According to UN Resolution 1441, it was Saddam's responsibility tp prove that they had been destroyed - he could not prove that. Also, according to the UN Resolution, if Saddam could not provide the proof, the UN and the security counsel had the right to act and that included an invasion.
Pay attection Lizzie and you might learn something.

Seems that too many of our Presidents have engaged the US in a foreign conflict that diverts public attention and resources away from domestic issues that need desperate attention..........
